>> this morning, a manhunt is under way for the shooter or shooters who ambushed two troopers at a pennsylvania state police barracks, killing one of them. we're following developments in the case as we expect to get an update from state police shortly. i-95 is back open after an early morning crash. several people are in the hospital right now. police closed off the stretch of the southbound lanes for some time this morning, but we're happy to report that traffic is once again moving. picture-perfect skies out there over philadelphia. just a few clouds, but that's it. blue skies, the sun has returned. temperatures not going to climb out of the 70s, that's where we're going to stay today and for most of the week. good morning, i'm rosemary connors. it's 10:00 on this sunday. let's get some more details from first alert meteorologist tedd florendo. >> it's sweatshirt weather for some locales across the tristate region. at least we're back to some sunshine and you won't need the

umbrellas for the day today. gorgeous shot as we look at boat house row this morning. winds remain calm and should remain that way throughout much of the area with exception of-to-the shore where it could get a little breezy. here are the numbers outside. we're ready for 60 at wilmington and middletown this morning. slowly starting to move things up. at least we will be warmer, but we're going to stay below average. all the way down to cape may and take a look at what we're expecting overnight. another cool night overnight, back into the upper 40s for the lehigh valley and maybe into the mid to upper 50s for philly and down to the shore. 67 at noon. sunny and cool. light winds. 72 for a high today. nice. sunny skies expected with also light winds and wait until you

see what we're expecting for the rest of your week next week. i'll have all the info when we come back. >> we'll check back with you in a few. all pennsylvania flags at state facilities are flying at half staff after the shooting of two state troopers. one trooper was killed in the ambush. the other was critically wounded. nbc 10's monique braxton has been monitoring developments in this story all morning long. she's standing by live in the digital operations center. monique, at this point, authorities have not named a specific suspect or even a person of interest. >> right now we are awaiting the latest update from pennsylvania state police, but i can tell you that police officers from several different agencies, including federal offices, are now part of a nonstop search for the gunmen or gunman who killed corporal brian dixon. it happened during an ambushing outside the police barracks. as we show you our video, let me recap for you what we've learned from state police. we've been told that dixon and another trooper were ambushed

friday night outside the barracks in a rural part of pike county. dixon died at the scene. trooper alex douglas underwent surgery and is now listed in critical but stable condition. we went along with police from three states as they stopped cars in an effort to make sure no stone was left unturned. investigators tell us they've issued a high alert to other offices involving police officers. they've also been interviewing several people but no clear person of interest. >> seems to be an attack on law enforcement and perhaps our form of government. i don't know. but i can't quiet anyone's fears. >> for someone to be out there and willing to shoot at an officer is pretty crazy. they haven't got him in custody yet. >> we should also tell you that all the officers in park county

are now searching many areas, including wooded areas. there was an aerial search yesterday. and as soon as we hear an update from state police, we'll pass along that information to you. live for now in the d.o.c., monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> pennsylvania governor tom corbett has called the attack on the troopers an attack on our state, country, and civilized society. >> one who is sworn to guard and protect us was shot in cold blood coming out of work at the end of his shift. another trooper was shot and wounded, in the hospital. and i hope the people of pennsylvania will keep those two troopers in their prayers and the family of those two troopers. >> the governor is asking anyone who may have any information on this deadly ambush to call police. for updates, you can count on us to bring it to you. just go to our website, nbc10.com.

new from overnight, the driver of an suv is under arrest after slamming into the back of a pennsylvania state police cruiser. the crash also involved a third vehicle. this happened in the eastbound lanes of i-76 at montgomery drive. traffic was blocked until crews could clear the scene earlier this morning. the trooper was taken to the hospital for a minor injury. authorities say the driver who struck the cruiser was under the influence. today in bucks county, a fallen police officer will be honored on what would have been his 37th birthday. a portion of state route 263 will be named in honor of plymouth township police officer brad fox. the officer was killed in the line of duty in 2012. a dedication ceremony will be held a little bit later this morning. overseas, matthew miller has been sentenced to six years of

hard labor by a north korean court. miller was detained in north korea in april for violating his tourist status when he entered the country. according to north korean officials, after he arrived, he tore up his visa and asked for asylum. britain's prime minister is calling the isis execution of a british humanitarian worker on video an ability of pure evil. you're looking at a still frame from the new video that appears to show the beheading of that worker. prime minister david cameron confirmed the death of david haines, who was abducted in syria last year. his death comes just weeks after isis executed american journalist james foley and steven sotloff. cameron promised to hunt down those responsible for haines's death. >> david haines was a british hero. the fact that an aide worker was taken, held, and brutally murdered at the hands of isil sums up what this organization

stands for. >> this morning, secretary of state john kerry is in paris for a global conference that's focusing on how to combat isis and the other islamic extremist groups. kerry arrived there from cairo last night. while he was in egypt, he said that egypt has a critical role in helping the world denounce the brutal methods used by islamic radicals. the isis threat will be up for discussion this morning on nbc's "meet the press." chuck todd will be talking with current and former white house officials. that comes your way in just about 20 minutes right here on nbc 10 at 10:30. the man was badly beaten thursday night while he and his gay partner were walking in center city. police are now looking for a group of men and women who assaulted the couple. a friend of a witness took this photo of police arriving. he'll undergo surgery this

morning for a fractured jaw and shattered cheekbone. his partner was treated at the hospital and has been released. new this morning, another malaysia airline plane has run into trouble. this weekend, a flight to india returned to kuala lumpur after a defect was discovered in the plane's auto pilot system. the captain turned back as a precaution. the airline says the defect did not affect the safety of the aircraft or the passengers. malaysia airlines flight mh-17, which was shot down in july, investigators are still trying to determine exactly what happened with that flight. according to investigators, they recovered 25 pieces of metal from the crash site that could lead them to the missile that brought down the airliner. western countries believe that pro-russian rebels shot down the jet with a russian-made surface-to-air missile. today, people from eastern europe who live in the philadelphia region will come together for a demonstration against russian aggression in ukraine. the rally will happen at 2:00 this afternoon on independence

electricity went out in the area after flames burned down a power line. according to firefighters, they've got about 10% of this blaze contained, but it's been difficult. a fire near sacramento broke out yesterday afternoon, it destroyed at least two houses and several cars in a rural neighborhood. families told to evacuate their

homes are now returning to the area. a 19-year-old albright college student is dead and two other students injured in an off campus house fire. sophomore matt rain of south river, new jersey, was visiting the house near the reading campus. fire officials say four students jumped from the second floor to escape the flames, which started in the basement. according to crews, there were working smoke detectors inside of the house. there's no word on the conditions of the other students. the search continues this morning for a hit-and-run driver who killed a father of three in north philadelphia. according to police, the driver of this speeding rental car hit the victim who was crossing the street early saturday morning. the impact threw the man's body into an oncoming vehicle. the driver of that car did stop to help. the honda was later found abandoned. let's head down south now. i-95 is back open this morning after this deadly pile-up shut it down for hours yesterday. according to police, three

tractor-trailers and five cars were involved in the chain reaction crash. one truck driver died in this accident. two other people suffered minor injuries. the cause of the crash is now under investigation. now to some news overseas. pakistan's army is getting a little bit creative in their efforts to stop serious flood waters. they're using explosives. soldiers blasted a levy to redirect the flow of water that's threatening to cause even more damage in that country. recent rains and floods have killed nearly 300 people in pakistan and injured hundreds more. flood waters have washed away many villages, affecting more than two million people in the country. there's also a flood emergency in croatia in an area where four rivers converge. the flooding has already september the rivers over their banks. about 100 soldiers and 120 firefighters are in place to help protect the population there. severe flooding in southwest china has sparked the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. china's central television reports that more than 28,000

residents are being evacuated from the area. a major river there is expected to rise to nearly 61 feet. coast guard officials in the philippines were busy last night when they rescued more than 100 passengers from a sinking ferry. the domestic ferry sank after encountering strong winds in waves that were whipped up by a storm just north of the ferry's path. crews have recovered two bodies and they fear that there may be more dead because it's uncertain exactly how many people were onboard that ferry. this weekend, the world health organization is urging more international health workers to come to west africa to help contain the ebola virus. hundreds of medical experts and international relief workers are trying to contain the outbreak in the region. the w.h.o. estimates that there are nearly 5,000 cases throughout the west african region and local medical teams are overwhelmed as the number of cases continues to rise. officials in saudi arabia, meantime, have introduced a new ebola screening program as the

58 currently for violin. 60 for dover. as we look farther to the west, that's where it really gets a little on the chilly side. twin cities at 52 this morning. 56 for des moines. that's the cold sector. while we're also a little cool this morning, it's warmer to the south. looks like temperatures for the day today are going to stay cool, but at least comfortable. we're also watching the atlantic. it's been a fairly quiet hurricane season, but this is tropical storm edoard right now. it is getting a little steam, but the good news is many miles are pointing it and shifting it back out to sea. this cold front is going to help it push out to sea and stay away from land. that's the good news. we're also watching a huge hurricane, this one is just off the coast of mexico here right now. this is odile. hurricane odile. big category four hurricane. the reason i'm showing you this

is because the southwest is battered from the previous hurricane. this is going to send a huge moisture surge back up through much of the desert southwest again this week. and that's going to create more flash flooding, more heavy rain for areas like phoenix, tucson, vegas, and southern california. so that is something that they are going to be watching. and i am going to be watching the rest of the first alert weather team this week. 64 degrees for our 11:00 a.m. temperature and our high for the day today. 72 degrees by 4:00 p.m. that's not too bad. the humidity is going to remain drastically low for the day. 64 degrees by 8:00 p.m. it will be cool, it will be clear. plenty of sunshine. just a few clouds for the day today. original planner, 63. poconos, lehigh valley, 70. the shore at 69 degrees, looking at sunny and nice conditions for the day today. your seven-day forecast, looks like we'll stay in the 70s throughout much of this week. nice weather for tomorrow. some showers on tuesday morning specifically. back to sunshine. the second half of the week.

tonight at boardwalk hall. it follows some fun on the boardwalk last night. a little bit of rain didn't stop the show us your shoes parade. the contestants took a ride in these fancy convertibles to show off their fancy footwear, decorated to represent their home state. for most people, camping has to do with hiking trails or roasting marshmallows, but some kids are taking it to the extreme, with zip lining, dirt biking and stunt training. jacob raskin shows us more about this trend that's inspiring kids to get active in the great outdoors. >> reporter: when the kids arrive, it all seems traditional enough. breakfast, bunk beds, beautiful scenery. but after roll call -- they quickly realize this isn't their father's camping. in southern california, paint
