good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> and i'm tracy davidson. it's 67 degrees outside right now at 5:00 a.m. let's begin with meteorologist brittney shipp, find out what's ahead in the first alert weather center. >> good morning. not a bad start to your wednesday morning as you head out the door. mostly cloudy skies throughout most of the region. temperatures mainly in the 60s. there's a live look at the city's skyline right now. 64 degrees in reading. temperatures this morning, if you're waking up with us in philadelphia, 68. atlantic city, a little bit cooler, as usual, 61 degrees. and as we push into the rest of today, we'll stay below average. our average for this time of the year, 81 degrees. 79 for your daytime high on this wednesday, but take a look at what happens on thursday. temperatures warm up ten degrees. we'll be close to 90 degrees by tomorrow. not to worry, it's not going to stick around long. i'll have all the details on that, plus, we're tracking the return of storms. we'll let you know exactly when, coming up in my first alert seven-day forecast. for now, jillian has a check on

traffic. good morning. >> good morning. i'm following construction, especially on 95. you can see it, southbound side near 291 at the philadelphia international airport. still active construction, but still not causing any slowdowns. if it stays out there around 5:15, 5:30, we could see a delay, but right now, no delays to report anywhere on 95. still have construction on 476, the blue route northbound at broomall. one lane of traffic is getting by there. and checking drive times this morning, as you can see, the blue route northbound from 95 to 76 will take you about 19 minutes, 14 minutes on 95 southbound from woodhaven to the vine. and if you're traveling 76 this morning westbound from the vine to the blue route, it's a 14-minute trip. vai? and happening today, president obama will address the nation on the isis threat and how he plans to deal with it. the president met in the oval office yesterday with house speaker john boehner, house minority leader nancy pelosi, senate majority leader harry reid and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. the white house said president obama will go forward without a

formal sign-off from lawmakers on a broader military plan against isis. >> the president does not envision a scenario where he would send american combat troops to be on the ground in syria. the president also does not envision a scenario where the united states is acting alone to support these elements of the moderate syrian opposition. >> and you can watch the president's address live tonight right here at 9:00 on nbc 10, and we'll also live stream it on nbc10.com. happening today in the casino crisis, trump entertainment resorts will have its first hearing in bankruptcy court. the company and its casinos filed bankruptcy protection yesterday. it also announced the trump taj mahal would shut down in november. trump plaza is already scheduled to close next week. now, trump taj mahal could be the fifth atlantic city casino to shut down this year. this map shows the impact that the crisis is having on the city. atlantic city started the year with a dozen casinos. the atlantic club shut its doors in january. showboat and revel closed labor

day weekend. trump plaza and trump taj mahal are next. and you can count on nbc 10 for condition coverage of the casino crisis on nbc10.com. you will find in-depth reports on the impact on atlantic city's economy. happening today, the defense presents its case in the trial of a woman accused of kidnapping and raping a 5-year-old philadelphia girl. the defense attorney has not confirmed whether christina regusters will take the stand in her own defense today. nbc 10's katy zachry's live outside the criminal justice center with what regusters's family is saying. katy? >> reporter: and we spoke to christina regusters's mother and sister, who have been in court watching this trial unfold for the last 11 days. the prosecution laid out its case. christina regusters's family tells us she's not the monster that people think she is. the 21-year-old former child care worker is accused of kidnapping a young girl from her cobbs creek school in january of 2013. police say regusters walked the victim to her home several

blocks away, where she kept her for nearly 24 hours, raping her. the 5-year-old's injuries were so bad, she had to have severe surgeries after. regusters's dna was found on the victim's t-shirt, but the little girl's dna was never found in regusters's home. the prosecution believes she disposed of an area rug after the crime. regusters's mother spoke to us, as long as we did not show her face, because she's receiving death threats. >> it's very painful. it's painful to hear, it's painful to watch. i mean, it's just horrible. and to think that my daughter's being accused of it, yes, it's even more so. >> my sister loves children. like, that's her life. that's her dream in life, to help children, and she would never hurt a child. she's too nurturing. and honestly, she would hurt herself before she would hurt a child. so, i know she's innocent. >> reporter: and you just heard from christina regusters's sister, tasha. the trial is in the middle of

its third week. yesterday a third juror was dismissed. no reason was given. we do understand from defense attorney fred harrison jr. that this morning he will call two to three witnesses to the defense. reporting from philadelphia, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. also happening in court today, the trial begins for a former philadelphia police officer accused of having her teenage son and daughter fight other kids. the charges against tameka gross include child endangerment and corruption. she's also charged with assault stemming from a fight she allegedly took part in. that happened at lincoln high school in mayfair. she was allegedly captured on video punching a 14-year-old girl her daughter was fighting. gross was fired from the police force with police commissioner charles ramsay saying she's paying the price for what he called thuggish behavior. from our delaware bureau, state police are searching for two kids accused of beating up a young boy in a wheelchair. 12-year-old quan mackey is in the wheelchair because of cerebral palsy, and police tell us on monday the two attackers,

just about quan's age, shoved his wheelchair into a sewer grate in newark and then roughed him up and stole his keys. quan and his father say the same kids stole the family's cats and bullied quan for months. >> we've got to stop them before years from now they do something even worse. >> one of the suspects may be identified by a small birth mark that's on his hand. police have canvassed this neighborhood, notifying residents of the incident. and the easton area school district has finalized its proposal for new safety measures. included will be new digital cameras to replace the older vhs cameras that are on school buses. the district also wants to build new security vestibules at all schools that would send visitors into a reception area before they could get into the school. the new plans will go to the school board in two weeks. meantime, some delaware county teachers working without a contract have taken their case to the parents. they picketed outside ridley middle school during a back-to-school night last night, informing parents about an

ongoing dispute that they're having. their contract expired june 30th. the ridley teachers say their main concern actually isn't money. they want guaranteed preparation time during the school day. >> what is most important to teachers is what most impacts our daily service to the students. >> if you could get that prep time, would that settle this? >> i think that would be one major step forward, yes, but they won't even talk about it. >> the ridley school superintendent released a statement saying the school board believes that commenting on negotiations through the media is counterproductive. good morning. a live look at citizens bank park. we have a phillies game today. we'll see nice conditions, temperatures staying below average for us. so, a nice wednesday on tap. one warm day in your workweek. that's going to be tomorrow. temperatures getting close to 90 degrees. then we are tracking storms for tomorrow, and it's probably going to affect your evening

commute. for philadelphia right now, 68 degrees, just a few clouds. wind speeds out of the east-northeast at 7 miles per hour. and throughout the rest of our region, we're at 64 degrees in reading. high 60s in philadelphia and then low 60s for atlantic city. a closer look at the rest of our area, especially closer to delaware, we're at 67 degrees. lancaster at 64 this morning. 65 in mt. holly. and we're at 65 degrees in trenton. one thing to point out, we have a coastal flood advisory with a high rip current risk along the shore here and our delaware beach communities for the rest of today. association just be careful if you plan on heading into the water. we're going to see nice and comfortable temperatures at 75 degrees for atlantic city pushing into the afternoon, but be careful heading into the water. right now in millville we're at 64 degrees, 63 in woodbine and dry conditions, but we are seeing mostly cloudy skies as we head into the rest of today. as we show you what's happening on thursday, this is closer to 4:00 p.m. so, today we don't have much to worry about. this is tomorrow. we have a chance of moderate

rain reading stretching up to the poconos and then thunderstorms expected to roll through philadelphia, trenton, wilmington. that's going to be closer to 5:00, 6:00, affecting your evening commute. and we'll continue to see all the rainfall transitioning closer to the shore and also parts of delaware as we head into your 10:00 hour. but by friday, things clear up nicely. a cold front associated with that is going to drop our temperatures right back down. so, similar conditions friday as what we're seeing today. 79 degrees in allentown, 79 the high today in quakertown. same thing in northeast philadelphia right along the shore. we are going to stay in the mid-70s. 75 the high in atlantic city. and around the philadelphia area, 79 degrees for chester, 79 in philadelphia, and again, big-time warm-ups as we head into tomorrow. >> i just saw 5:10. i don't think it's a problem this hour, but there is some construction out there with maybe some lane closures. >> and jillian mele is covering it all. jillian? >> oh, a lot of that construction actually clears around 5:00, so we are seeing a lot of it start to clear out

right now. no construction to report on the boulevard. this is a live look near broad street. you can see both directions completely clear. the boulevard is looking good right now. 76 is clear. and your drive times on 76, about 14 minutes both ways between the blue route and the vine. this is a long-term project. this is out there all day every day. 422 eastbound, armand hammer boulevard, on and off-ramps closed until late november. detours are posted there. no construction on 22 for drivers in the lehigh valley. this is route 22 at airport road. you can see traffic moving along just fine. keep in mind, we do have the normal construction out there on the northeast extension, but right now it's not active, which is a little bit of good news. tracy? tomorrow is the 13th anniversary of the september 11th attacks, and today lawmakers are announcing a special tribute to honor those who lost their lives. and a shark attack off the coast of australia. this morning we hear from a man who jumped into the water after witnessing the attack.

no! could have gotten me one. i did. grab a spicy smoked sausage breakfast sandwich. it's the smoked sausage you crave, now spicy. from the nbc 10 south jersey bureau, two suspects are behind bars, accused in a violent purse-snatching at a popular shopping center in burlington county last month. 36-year-old joshua mcfarland and 32-year-old misty riddle are being held on $250,000 bail. nbc 10 first told you about this story last month. police say the pair grabbed a purse from a 75-year-old woman outside the promenade shopping center in easton township. the victim broke her hip and her arm. police say they caught the suspects after learning that they were arrested for a similar crime in hamilton township.

and police in chester county are looking for gunmen who targeted homeowners in a pair of daytime robberies in the same neighborhood. police say the gunmen hit homes on canterbury road and in one case threatened to shoot a 67-year-old man and got away with a rifle and ammunition. it is 5:14. happening today on the eve of the 13th anniversary of 9/11, congress will unveil new honors for those who died in the 2001 terror attacks. later this morning, members of the house and senate will unveil three congressional gold medals. the medals, like the ones you see here being presented, are the highest civilian honor lawmakers can bestow. they will serve as a remembrance of those who were killed at the world trade center, the pentagon and shanksville, pennsylvania. tomorrow's annual 9/11 ceremony in new york will be held at the memorial plaza in lower manhattan. the ceremony's private. the plaza and september 11th museum will be closed most of the day but will open to the

public for the first time on the anniversary starting at 6:00 tomorrow night. more charges are expected to be filed against a man suspected of killing his five children in south carolina and then dumping the bodies on a dirt road in alabama. police picked up timothy ray jones on unrelated charges. he's in jail in mississippi where police say he fled after the killings. investigators say jones led them to where he dumped the bodies in alabama. the mother reported the children missing last week. the bodies were found yesterday. the children were between the ages of 1 and 8. and in northern california, wildlife crews are setting more traps to try to catch a mountain lion that attacked a 6-year-old boy. that attack happened on monday while the boy and his parents were hiking. the parents fought off the animal. the boy was treated for bite wounds and scratches. in australia, a man is now explaining what happened when he tried to rescue another guy being attacked by a shark. it happened yesterday at a popular beach. mark hickey was on the beach when he spotted the man in

trouble. hickey said he swam 60 feet out to try to get the victim, but it was too late for him to do anything. >> i dragged him on to the sand, and we then tried to give him cpr and mouth-to-mouth for about 20 minutes. he had been attacked in the leg and had obviously bled to death in the water. >> the beach was closed. authorities are trying to determine the size and species of the shark. broadway paid tribute to joan rivers last night shortly before curtain time. theaters dimmed their lights in her honor and people on the streets, well, they applauded. the legendary comedienne appeared on broadway in the 1970s and the '80s and '90s and was nominated for a tony award. the broadway league initially decided rivers did not meet the criteria for dimming the lights, but changed its mind after several theater owners decided to do it on their own. >> good choice. just about 5:17. if you're getting ready to hit the roads, let's check to see if you need to know anything before you head out. >> and if you need to, jillian

mele will help you out. good morning, vai and tracy. good morning to you. talking about area bridges, no accidents, no delays to report on any of them. this is the ben franklin bridge, the view from philadelphia. you can see traffic is moving along in both directions. so, no issues to report there. when it comes to 95, as we hit that 6:00 mark, that's typically when we start to see some delays building. this is southbound right at girard avenue as drivers head into center city. still looking clear right now, drive times about 13-14 minutes between the vine and woodhaven, so it's a good drive time right now. no accidents to report on any of the majors in pennsylvania, new jersey or delaware. and speaking of delaware, 295 new yo northbound, the ramp to route 13 southbound is closed due to construction in the area. watch for detours posted there. good morning. we're going to see a mild start to your wednesday as we head into the rest of the afternoon. temperatures will stay below average, which is nice. although heading into tomorrow, big changes.

we'll warm up almost ten degrees, close to 90 degrees for us tomorrow. and we're also tracking a stormy end to your evening commute on your thursday. in philadelphia right now, 68 degrees, partly cloudy skies. our humidity's at 68%. wind speeds out of the east-northeast at 7 miles per hour. so, it is comfortable when you head out and it will be a relatively comfortable day. and throughout the rest of our area, 59 degrees for the poconos, 65 in trenton, 61 in atlantic city, low 60s in dover. dry conditions. our first alert radar showing not a whole lot happening here. we are seeing a cloudy start. but the next thing we're going to track is this area of low pressure moving through the midwest. you can see heavy rain pushing into parts of st. louis, chicago, also minneapolis. the brunt of this system will stay to the north of us, but we are going to see a cold front associated with this, and we are noticing that storms will trigger closer to your evening and afternoon hours on thursday. our temperatures will drop back down after we warm close to 90 degrees. so, we'll be short-lived with the warming trend. but if we take a closer look at

the storms and timing of the storms by 5:00 p.m., we're seeing isolated thunderstorms mainly in reading, into allentown, parts of the poconos. that will move into the i-95 corridor. that's closer to 6:00, so that is going to affect your evening commute. we'll continue to see these storms tracking to the south, moving right along the shore by 9:00, 10:00 at night. then they'll push right offshore and we'll start to see clearing as we head into your friday. your bus stop forecast for today, as you take the kids to the bus stop. a crisp start, 65 to 69 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. seven-day forecast shows the big-time warm-up between today and tomorrow, ten degrees warmer. storms as we head into your afternoon and evening. but with the cold front, it's going to drop our temperatures right back down to the high 70s for friday. >> thank you. apple shows off its newest technology, including a brand new smartwatch. and this morning, a look at how long you'll have to wait to get your hands on one. and from apple to oranges. coming up later, we'll tell you about this messy little accident.

salem county. the building will nearly double the space of the current center in new castle, delaware. the holy redeemer health systems says its cancer system will partner with the kimmel cancer network at jefferson hospital. and detroit is making a move to try to get out of the nation's biggest municipal bankruptcy. court documents show the city and one of its key creditors have agreed to settle $400 million claim. records show the city will pay the creditor 26 cents on the dollar. the plan could help detroit reduce its debts and emerge from federal bankruptcy protection. and tech junkies are finally getting a first look at the new apple watch. the company unveiled some of its newest products yesterday. the watch is significant for apple because a lot of people questioned whether it could still be innovative following the death of co-founder steve jobs. apple also unveiled two new larger iphones. the phones go on sale a week from friday, but the watch won't be available until some time early next year. >> but after that big announcement, other companies want to cash in on the

chance of storms later this week. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> and i'm vai sikahema. it's late summer, but it sure feels like fall. let's start with meteorologist brittney shipp and her first alert forecast. good morning. >> good morning. it's going to feel like summer once again as we head into tomorrow, temperatures pushing close to 90 degrees. but today it's a nice and mild start, temperatures mainly in the 60s. there's a live look at the city's skyline. we are going to see a cloudy start on your wednesday, but again, mild conditions as you head out the door. right now our temperatures in the poconos at 58 degrees. 65 in allentown. mid-60s in trenton. 61 degrees in atlantic city. we also have a coastal flood advisory to tell you about, so be careful if you plan on going into the water for today as we head into the rest of the afternoon. 63 right now in dover and our range today between 77 and 80 degrees. mostly cloudy skies expected before we track a warming trend heading into tomorrow. also the return of storms. i'll let you know what to expect and help you plan your thursday

coming up in my full forecast. first, let's check in with jillian for a look at traffic. good morning. >> good morning. we are accident-free. it's a really good start on the highways. this is a live look at center city philadelphia, the vine strees xr street expressway, westbound making their way to 76. 76 is quiet. 95 is also free of any accidents. for drivers in chester county, this is a live look at route 100 at commerce drive. you can see that is quiet. 202 is also clear. so is the route 30 bypass. heading out on 422 eastbound, from route 29 down to route 23, you can see speeds averaging in the mid-50s the entire length of the way. once you get to that interchange where 422 meets with the pennsylvania turnpike and 76, then speeds slow down to 50 miles per hour, but we are not reporting any delays at all. vai? jillian, there is more fallout from the ray rice case. the president of the new jersey senate is calling for an investigation into how rice's punishment was handled following an attack on his future wife that was all caught
