and we have ava marie with your weather. >> the storm is pulling away from the northeast. can you imagine how bad it was in the northeast with the snow and the wind? we really dodged a bull. thankfully the northeast is drying out as well. they are just going to be recovering as the system pulls away from the coast. next we are expecting more rain to come through tonight into tomorrow. as for today, a lot of areas dropping into the 20's with 21 degrees currently at the airport and 32 downtown and we'll get to the forecast for the rest of the afternoon and the seven-day in a few minutes. >> a bit of relief for those living in the northeast of the country, the historic blizzard that's pounded the region in

the last couple of days has gone. >> but massachusetts was the hardest hit and it covered six states. >> the winds and snows finally stopped. and across new england the focus is turned to what will be a difficult recovery. >> state police and the national guard have been out in force and working in tandem. >> but these are the most important teams right now. crews working through brutal conditions to try to restore power to many still without heat. >> we're working 16-hour shifts. in this weather, that's -- >> it's been tough to dig out dozens of cars both abandoned at the height of the storm. across the region many of the roads have re-opened but things are very messy. this means those who want to get around have to be a bit creative. >> going down the hill trying

to ski for the fist time in my life. >> skis, sleds, even a kayak helped some. but for longer trips, airports have re-opened but flight options are still very limited. >> of course for most here the journey is not as much about distance as it is about determination. getting back to the way things are before the storm. a trip here for many will not take days but weeks. >> a massachusetts boy is now among the half a dozen people who died as a result of the snow storm. the boy died of carbon monoxide poisoning. while the father's child shoveled out of the snowed in car the boy climbed inside the car.

>> while boston's logan airport remains closeded, across the region flights are expected to be back on close to normal schedule and the new york-boston train route will be closed until authorities can shovel the tracks clear. >> a few dozen utility crews are helping deal with the power outages in that region. >> fighting wet, heavy snow and hurricane-strength winds, more than 650,000 across new england were without power in the store's heat. crews with baltimore electric and gas headed there to help. >> we have about 40 of our employees there to help out with the outages that they experienced up in the new england area. >> massachusetts was the heartest hit.

officials there say 400,000 customers were without power and next was road island and about a quarter of house holds were in the dark there. in connecticut 38,000 are affected. >> we know they are working in snowy conditions and working around the clock. >> the spokesperson says battleground sbg part of several mutual assistants that works up and down the east coast. >> we will request crews from those states hit hart and when other states are hit hard by the weather we make sure we send some there as well. >> and bg&e says forecasters say another storm could be headed in that direction. >> we could then send more

>> good morning. things are finally quieting down behind that big storm system that impacted the northeast for the past couple of days. now, we didn't get snow but we had the winds. now winds are calm as we had some minor power outages due to the winds over the weekend. strong storms with 3 mile-per-hour winds still there. degrees in gaithersburg and low to mid 20's across the eastern shore. a few spots milder cambridge at

32. today we're starting off with quite a bit of sunshine, light winds and the temperatures this afternoon are going to be right where they should be this time of year. ranging from 40-43 through the afternoon. we're expecteding a few clouds later today as the storm system approaches the area but there will be plenty of sunshine later. as we go into tomorrow the storm is brewing across the plains and there could be severe weather in texas, arkansas and parnts of louisiana. for us mainly a rainmaker. the warm air already starting to push in. the blue shadings show all the chilly air in place across the mid-atlantic into the ohio valley and very cold in the northeast behind that powerful nor'easter. 16 in boston but notice how we're just a little bit warmer here in baltimore. we're expecting the storm system to come in with those

milder temperatures and a steady onset of the storm that could bring in a little sleet. there will be a bigger concern foritising as you get into pennsylvania. for maryland plainly a rain event and temperatures should warm up tomorrow. the forecast for tonight increasing clouds. rain arrives well after midnight and especially in the north and east part of the state there could be a brief ice mix. temperatures should stay above the freezing mark. going into tomorrow it will be a rain event, temperatures become mild into the afternoon as skies begin to clear out we will be into the low to mid 50's. for our seven-day forecast we're expecting temperatures to be a little chilly. we're expecting to clear out on tuesday, breezy 47 tuesday, 42 on wednesday and wednesday there is a chance for a wintry

mix. >> lawmakers in annapolis are allowing natural gas companies to seek a surcharge of up to $2 for the cost of replacing aging infrastructure. the decision came down and now the surcharge would have to be approved by the public service pun the sur tax couldn't be put in place until after the replacements took place. critics say they shouldn't be charging for a job that should already be being done under the current budge it. >> 11 news reporter david collins has the latest from the st >> big brother or critical investigate i have tool. cameras are in place on 1/3 of the m. the president a. bus

sunday morning. thank you for joining us. >> ava is here with a look outside and i am so grateful we don't have that snow and the wind is gone. >> but an awful situation. i know a lot of people have been bummed that we have had so many snowless winters here, but when you think of how much it can cripple the city and a lot of people lose power. so be thankful we dodged this bullet. >> probably wishing we had a little bit of snow but be thankful we didn't get that much. looking across the northeast, the stormfulling away from new england and in its place we're tracking a chance for rain moving back in the area. rain much easier to deal with than snow. >> 21 degrees at the airport. 32 downtown and 25 in catonsville. mostly sunny to start then our high temperatures getting in the low to mid 40's later today. then we track that chance for rain tonight.

some areas with possible ice. >> we are now getting a bird's eye view of the trouble the blizzard is causing in massachusetts. serious concerns after high tide washed away up to 20 feet of sand today. new yorkers are digging out of 15isms of snow that had people shoveling out their cars and the mayor michael bloomberg says the streets are in good shape. not every road in new york is clear. a major highway the expressaway will be closed as officials work to clear snow that left hundreds of cars stuck and some drives in their car for hours. ability 30 miles of the long island expressaway will be closed until about 5:00 p.m. this evening. >> to mardi gras celebrations. four people were shot on

bourbon street just before :30 saturday night? on the iconic street in the french quarter. when gunshots erupted a woman describes many kicking and pushing as they ran to safety. a second man is listed in critical condition from his injuries and police are tracking dune suspect. had this happened last saturday night bourbon street would have been packed with ravens fans. >> and president obama will touch on the issue at his state of the union address tuesday. and yesterday the first lady was among those to gather to say goodbye to a teenager who was killed a week after her participation in the inauguration by random gun violence. ♪ >> in chicago a day of mourning

massive storm. one man said after shoveling the snow it feels like lifting cement. >> it took four guys with shovels around a lot of grit to get just one car unstuck this morning. connecticut woke up to white-out conditions with several communities buried under three feet of snow. the deepest, 40 inches in ham done. >> it's been really hectic. we have been shoveling up in the front of the mall and it's taking a lot of work. >> overnight the blizzard was intense dumping several inches of snow reach hour. >> we had a snow mobile but didn't know thousand drive it. >> i have filed a declaration with the president. >> blanket bid nearly two feet of snow, the errant was closed. >> vehicles were banned to keep open a route for utility workers. but officials say abandoned

vehicles blocking roadways has been one of the biggest challenges. the snow piled up so fast even this huge plow got stuck and needed a tow. during a 24-hour period during the storm state police received some 1,600 calls for help. >> clearly it's a lot of snow that's out here. i don't think it's that much worse than new england has had to deal with before. >> everywhere they were trying to deal with this historic blast. >> nbc news, hartford. >> now your insta-weather plus forecast with meteorologist ava marie. >> and it's going to be a while before the entire new england area recovers from that heavy snow. a lot of people still without power at this point. what we're seeing right now, the snow has ended. the storm continues to pull away from the new england area and the winds are calming down as well. already we're seeing the winds

down to a calm state. there's a next storm system we're tracking. as one area of the country quiets down another becomes active. parts of the south ahead of this storm system and a blizzard from nebraska into minnesota. so those areas will be suffering from that heavy snow today. as for us this is going to be mainly a rain event as it moves through. but you see the pink shading? that represents a little bit of ice so at the onset of this storm there could be ice as well. first let's talk temperatures now. a little on the chilly side. we have 20's and 30's out there. 21 at the arnte in frederick and upper and mid 20's as we head across the eastern shore so, it is a cold start to the day. we expect the temperatures to warm up as we go into the afternoon. back to normal with the highs up to 43. the mountains should be anywhere from the mid 30's to near 40 degrees.

they will have depreas 13ing clouds throughout the day as the storm system approaches the area. most of this is going to show up as rain shown by the green shadings. some of the green showing up in pennsylvania, it's possible some of that pink could make its way to northern maryland and western maryland. this means this could start off as a freezing rain event early tonight into tomorrow morning making the roads slick. then it turns into a rain event. then the rain should start to push out by tomorrow afternoon. and by tomorrow if we get a little bit of sunshine we will see the temperatures warm up. so there's a forecast for tonight. increasing clouds. rain arrives late tonight, especially towards dawn tomorrow and some areas may see a brief icy mix help in western maryland and southern pennsylvania as well. that means there could be icy spots on the road early in the morning. most of you will probably sleep

right through it. then slow downs in the morning rush. this should clear out by the afternoon and temperatures could bump up into the low 50's. that would be a nice mild day before we cool down. by tuesday's we're back to the conditions and still in the lows 40's and 50's. >> well, it was a sweet way to spend an evening surrounded by chocolate last night. 1,000 people enjoyed a chocolate affair. guests were treated to a chocolate-inspired dinner by chef gomez and an array of decadent desserts. the event raises money for health care for the home less. while chocolate and health care may seem like an odd pairing, they say they do go hand in hand zpwhfment chocolate has always had medicinal purposes for thousands of years and

tonight it is in that it supports health care for the homeless. >> it aims to get homeless off the streets and help provide them with addiction treatment and social services. >> and a day of celebration at the breakfast shop that hosted ava elk lynn day. she underwent a surgery to remove a tumor then suffered a series of strokes left only with the ability to bhink at the tame. at the time. after months of fundraising her father says he was humbled to receive more than $5,300 in donations. >> ava is going to have different types of therapy from aqua to speech therapy to aquatic therapy. >> we're told ava is

>> we're looking at unblocking social media sites so if teachers find a youtube video we can unblock it and they can use it in a lesson. >> creating a sort of high-tech path for learning. educators in schools with social media have already predicted this is only the beginning. >> i've seen so many opportunities tom connect through social media sites in this country and across the world and it just opens so many doors to my students. >> but the social policy won't go on the books without language to protect students. it draws the line on how students and educators communicate but would be exceptions where administrators and parents have give theron written permission. >> and they say this is only the fist reading on that social media policy. if it's approved it would go on

boston. >> the winds and snow finally stopped. and across new england the focus has turned to what will be a difficult recovery. >> the state police and the national guard have been out in force and working in tandem. >> but these are the most important teams right now. crews working through brutal conditions to try and restore power to hundred offense thousands, many still without any heat. >> we're working hard, 16-hour shifts. this weather, that's it. >> it's been tough to dig out dozens of cars, most abandoned at the height of the storm. across the region many of the roads have reopened but are very messy and transportation for the most part are still offline meaning those who want to get around have to be very creative. >> trying to ski in boston for the first time in my life. >> skis, sleds, even a kayak helped some. but for longer trips, airports

have re-opened but flight options are still very limited. >> of course for most here, the journey is not as much about dependence as it is about determination. their destination of getting back to the way things were before the storm. >> jay gray. wbal-tv 11 news. >> a massachusetts boy is among half a dozen people who died as a result of the storm. boston fire officials say the boy died of carbon monoxide poisoning. while the boy's father shoveled out the snowed up car, the boy climbed in the car to get warm and the exhaust pipe was covered filling the car with carbon monoxide and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. >> amtrak stays new york-boston train route will remain closed as crews work to clear the track of snow and fallen trees.

trains are running south of new york and between new york and albany. >> here in maryland the storm spared us but a couple local -- >> fighting wet, heavy snow, hurricane-strength winds. more than 650,000 people across new england were without power at the storm's peak. friday when most people in the region were hunkering down, crews with baltimore gas and electric headed into the storm. >> we sent 30-40 of our employees up to the new england effort to so they could help with the power outages there. >> massachusetts was the hardest hit. officials there say 400,000 customers were without power and the next was a quarter of all households were in the dark. baltimore bg&e crews are working in connecticut where hundred offense thousands of

customers are working round the clock. >> they wanted to help get those customers back into service as quickly and safely ads possible. >> bg&e are part of several sthants work up and down the east coast. >> we will request crews from other states that haven't been hit hard like maryland and we can make sure we can send some of our crews as well as long as it's not jeopardizing our own system. >> forecasters are saying another storm could be headed in our direction. >> once we see what that storm is we could possibly send more crews upon request. >> according to bg&e about 4,000 customers lost power because of the storm. nearly all have had their power restored. sarah sampson, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the chairman of the maryland republican party is resigning

>> we are in between storm systems that the point 26789 powerful one that ripped through the new england area over the past couple of days bringing all that heavy snow is pushing out into eastern canada and moving out to israeli sea. now the next storm system this one coming in with mild temperatures meaning it could be mostly a rain event but right now quiet across the atlantic and across maryland as well. temperatures are on the chilly side as we see that happening right now. 19 at gaithersburg, 21 at the airport and 31 downtown and teens as you head out across western maryland. starting off with sunny skies and clouds build in later today. winds becoming south 5-10 miles per hour. next storm system will come in mostly as a rain event from texas and unfortunately along the cold front, severe thunderstorms are possible in the south as well.

from nebraska to minnesota, much quieter conditions as the storm moves our way. over the future cast, clouds build in through the afternoon and then it looks like the storm system should hold off until around midnight. around 3:00 a.m. is when the rain could start to break out. after that the temperatures could be near the freezing mark. that's shown by shadings of pink. the model is having a hard time show thfplgt anywhere across northern maryland and western maryland as well, there could be a brief period of freezing rain late tonight into tomorrow morning and they been it becomes a rain event throughout the rest of the day and then by noon we should be clearing things out. as for tonight we drop back into the 30's for overnight lois. we will have increasing clouds

and rain arrives that period of freezing rain and make things slick for just a short period of time, especially before sunrise. then we quickly change over the rain. with a little bit of sun breaking out tomorrow, i think the temperatures bump all the way up into the low 50's. should be a nice break after this chilly pattern. then we're back into a chilly pattern. breezy on tuesday as well as thursday and another storm system comes this way and it could bring a mix of rain and snow. >> it was a sweet way to spend an evening surrounded by chocolate. last night close to 1,000 people enjoyed a chocolate-inspired edwinner by chef carlos gomez. the event raises money for health care for the homeless. while chocolate and health care may seem like an odd combination, organizers say they go hand in hand. >> chocolate has always had

days. because three to four feet of snow fell in some areas. so that storm finally moving away from the northeast. and we could have quiet weather before the next storm system moves away. so it should be a rain event rather than a snow event here in the mid-atlantic. right now downtown 31 degrees. a airport 21 and pasadena 23. starting off with sunshine today then clouds by the afternoon and in the low to mid 40's. we will be checking out that next batch of rain. >> thanks ava. we're now getting the bird's eye view of the trouble the blizzard is causing in long island. and new yorkers are digging out this morning. the city got 15 inches of snow which had people out shovaling their cars out. the mayor said the streets were

in pretty good shape but not every road was spared. workers clear snow that left hundreds of cars stranded. about 30 miles of the long island expressaway will be closeded in both directions until about 5:00 p.m. tonight. >> to new orleans now where mardi gras celebrations turned violent on bourbon street. this morning one person is in critical condition. witnesses say a fight started outside a strip club and gunshots erupted. one woman describes people as being kicked and pushed as they ran to safety. the bullets grazed three people. two women and one man. a second man is in critical condition from his injuries and police say they are using surveillance and cell phone video to hem them track down a suspect.

>> good morning. let's check up on ocean city real quick. this is our live view from the grand hotel and spa. little chilly out there right now, but what a beautiful sunrise you can see coming in from across the shore line starting in the 20's from along the coast. we have 20 degrees from the airport. the winds are calm and humidity at 77%. the barometer at 34 inches. that's in between the next storm system coming our way. that's the one that brought all the snow new england. now here comes the next one. we're seeing thunderstorms -- a lot of rain overlooking the -- and check this out. from nebraska all the way up into mven. those are going to be the areas

we are struggling to see in the heavy snow. there's a chance there could be a little bit of ice associated with it as well. first, let's talk temperatures. see what's happening across the state. a little chilly seeing temperatures across the state. starting off in the 20's right now, so we can switch over to our temperature map. we have 18 degrees in gaithersburg. the forecast for today starting off with sunshine. clouds in the afternoon and our temperatures this afternoon should be in the low to mid 40's. that actually puts us back to where we should be this time of year. a new storm comes our way this one with a cold front coming across the east. that's what we will have to watch out for. the clouds increase later this afternoon through tonight and then we start to see the rain move in early, around 3:00 a.m.

there could be freezing rain because there's cold air near the surface. so if you live in northern and western maryland you should watch out for minor slick spots. then we change over to a rain event for the rest of the morning's commute. the forecast for tonight, increasing clouds, the rain arrives very late tonight and temperatures drop back into the 30's and there could be a brief period of freezing rain in the northern and western part of the state. then high temperatures jump up into the low to mid 50's by tomorrow afternoon. then a wintry mix possible wednesday. >> so what's next after a big storm like the nor'easter? cleaning up. and it will be taxing on the city budget. >> new york city officials estimate for every one inch of

snow it will cost $1 million to remove it. >> with the weather outside frightfull. some people have to be out in it. whether working the plows or traveling snow-packed roads. >> the conditions are horrible. we have had worse but it's only going to get worse from here. >> then there are those who reval in whatever mother nature dishes out. >> it's been two years. i love it. >> love it or loathe it, there's no business like snow business. for cities and towns trying to budget for snow removal and cleanup, all this snow adds up. >> the problem they run into is when they get a big storm and all of a sudden they spend the whole budget on that storm and there's nothing left for the rest of the winter. >> new york city estimates it costs $1 million per inch of

>> welcome to 11 news sunday morning i'm lisa robinson. >> and i'm jennifer franciotti. we'll get to our top stories but first we check in with meteorologist i have a off. >> at least we're -- with ava marie. >> at least we're not shoveling snow. power outages. a lot of people are going to be stuck at their house for a couple days. so we really did dodge a bullet. we're in between storm systems at the moment. we're starting off the day with clear skies. eventually toward the afternoon the clouds build in with that next batch of rain. at the airport, 19 degrees. across the bay, 26 in rock haul. the forecast for today, starting off with sunshine. the clouds return towards the afternoon and highs today 40-45 right where we should be for this time of year. by tonight we will be tracking rain in the area. some areas get a bit of ice. >> digging out and restoring

power are the priorities after the big nor'easter but it has left a big mess across the state. massachusetts was hit the hardest. >> six states dealing with all that. digging out. trying to restore power. jay gray has more from boston. >> the wind and snow finally stopped and across new england the focus has turned to what will be a difficult recovery. >> the state police and national guard have been out in force and working in tandem. >> but these are the most important teams right now. crews working through brutal conditions to try and restore power to hundreds of thousands, many still without heat. >> working 16-hour shifts. in this weather, that's stuff. -- that's tough. >> it's been tough to dig out dozens of cars, most abandoned at the height of the storm. across the region many of the roads have reopened but are

messy meaning anyone who wants to get around have to be a bit creative. >> going down the hill. trying to ski for the first time. >> skis, sleds even a kayak helped some. be for longer trips, airports have re-opened but flight options are still very limited. of course for most here, the journey is not as much about distance as it is about determination. the destination, getting back to the way things were before the storm. jay gray, wbal-tv 11 news. >> an 11-year-old massachusetts boy is among half a dozen people who died as a result of this snow storm. officials say he died of carbon monoxide poisoning. while his father was shoveling out the car the boy climbed inside the car and the car

filled with carbon dioxide fumes and the boy was pronounced dead. >> boston's logan airport remains closed. amtrak says the new york-boston train route will remain closed as the tracks are cleared of snow and trees. >> and because the storm did spare maryland now a few dozen local utility crews are up north dealing with power outages in the region. sarah sampson has that part of the story. >> fighting wet, heavy snow and hurricane-strength winds. more than 650,000 people across new england were without power at the storm's peak. friday when most people in the region were hunkering down, crews with baltimore gas and electric were headed to new england. >> we sent crews to help out with the outages that they

experienced in the new england area. >> massachusetts was the hardest hit. officials there say 400,000 customers were without power. next was road island where about 180,000 people or a quarter of all households were in the dark. bg&e crews are working in connecticut where 100,000 customers are still out of power. >> the spokesperson says bg&e is part of several assistants that help work up and down the east coast. >> we will request crews from other states that haven't been hit as hard as maryland and that way when they are in need we can help as long as it doesn't jeopardize our own system. >> they will see if more crews need to head north. forecasts say another storm

could be headed in our direction. >> we could send more crews if requested. >> the -- according to bg&e about 4,000 customers lost power because of the winds and this morning nearly all have their power restored already. sarah sampson, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the chairman of the republican party is moving on from his post. he served two years as chairman. his resignation takes effect march 1. first vice chairman diana will serve as party chair until the spring g.o.p. convention when a new chairman will be elected. meanwhile a former first lady of maryland, the wife of bob ehrlich is expected to take part in a forum for candidates seeking to replace john leopold. she will join delegates john shoe and others on a forum on thursday, february 14.

applications for the county executive seat must be submitted to the-count critical by noon the following day. you may remember after being found guilty of misconduct in office, there was a resignation. >> the economy will take front and center stage this tuesday as president obama delivers the first state of the union address of his second term and officials say his second term will focus on job creation and economic growth. these are two issues that could be addressed, gun control and immigration. also ending the war in afghanistan by the end of 204. >> 7:05. in our "medical alert" simple steps to make your heart healthier. >> plus, behind the curtain of

>> the time now is 7:09. there's a beautiful look at sunrise right now over the inner harbor. the sun officially rose over baltimore at 67:04. makes it worth it to get up early on a sunday morning. 21 at the airport. the winds are calm and thank goodness the winds are calming down today. it's going to make the temperatures feel a whole lot better. on the backside of that nor'easter. now today temperatures are starting off on the chilly side with 24 degrees and 20 in hancock. at least we will be warming up as we go into the afternoon. sunshine at the start of the day then clouds starting to build back in.

the high today 40-45. right where we should be for this time of year. the winds calm and the sun should set at 5:38. then we're tracking the next storm system. already the rain starting to overspread the ohio valley. a lot of snow back in the plains all the way up into minnesota and we have severe weather to worry about this time in the south. along the cold front pushing into eastern texas and as the cold front moves through. as for us this will just be a rain event maybe a little bit of ice. the clouds return as we go into the afternoon and evening hours and continue to thicken as we go overnight. after midnight and especially after 3:00 a.m. a chance for rain developing across the area and it's a very early onset of the storm that could bring a little bit of ice.

some of that could show up in western maryland and the northern part of maryland as well. something to keep in mind. a brief bout of freezing rain in those areas. everyone else just seeing the rain. as we go into tomorrow morning rain could cause delays and then we clear up. forecast for tonight. increasing clouds. rain arrives late especially after midnight and northern parts of the state, western parts as well could see a quick burst of rain. really shouldn't have much time to accumulate. tomorrow cloudy skies and clearing skies into the afternoon. temperatures warm up into low to mid 50's especially with the breezy southwest wind. as we take you through the seven-day, it will be breezy and colder on wednesday with a chance for a wintry mix. >> thanks ava. well, the music industry gathers to honor its top talents. >> notable names.

>> a lot of people will go to the doctor and get prescribed medicine for blood spresh and not take it. >> you can't have a successful treatment if you don't take the pills. >> or they will take it every over day. >> exercise. we can't talk about exercise enough but it's very important to get moving unfortunately only 20% of adults exercise regularly, this is the key part of heart health. it doesn't have to be a gym membership. it could be as simple as taking your pet yorky for a walk around the block. >> there's controversy about what time you actually need. 10-30 minutes? >> i tell my patients to try to get 30 minutes of exercise where you get your heart rate up at least three to five times per week. >> heaty diet. we can talk about it. we talk about it so much but we don't do it. >> less than 1% of adults consistently eat a heart healthy diet which consists of

lean meats, fish, chicken. you warrant a diet high in vegetables and low-carb high drag race. >> mediterranean diet. >> that's been consistently healthy. >> and a strategy that's right for you. >> when the weather is cold you take the right preventative medicines and put a coat on. heart disease is the same thing. you live in the northeast the prevention you need is different from florida. medicine it's the same way. if you're at greater risk the medicines you need to take are different. it could be as simple as an aspirin or in others stronger medication. >> what about the screening process? >> the heart health foundation takes a leading role in this. it can be controversial. the fact of the matter is many people don't know they are at risk. you can't tell just by looking at someone.

we use ultrasound to identify disease. once you identify a disease you know the treatment you need to prevent a heart attack or stroke. >> a lot of good advice. thank you for coming in and sharing it. >> it's important. >> if you want to impress your sweetie this valentine's day we have a few creative ideas. first here's a look at some of the events around town.

>> you can do it in the shape you need. >> decorating wine bottles? >> this is really pretty. if you want to have an at-home row mantic dinner, you can wrap this scrap booking paper and flowers. it's just really pretty. you can add a gift that matches. >> sure. and you can take old bags and decorate them. >> and a lot of women love this. i thought this is a really sturdy, pretty bag. so what i did -- all you have to do is take this on here. >> i'm really bad with doing things here. >> put it on there. they give you red tissue. >> very clever. >> this paper is like your best friend. >> this i made. this is really, really fun. this is a love potion bottle. >> is that like an old purr fume bottle? >> no. it's actually like a -- [laughter] >> it's like an old video doo

>> and welcome back to 11 news sunday morning. thanks so much for joining us. >> ava is here with another look outside. i hope it will be warmer today. >> the big difference today we won't have as much wind. you know how bitter it has been because of the strong winds. a new storm system is approaching the area. you can see the rain spreading over arkansas, missouri and moving into kentucky and indiana. right now starting off with mostly clear skies. b.w.i. at 23 degrees. we should be at least warming up into the low to mid 40's later this afternoon and later today is when the clouds will be returning. we're getting a southerly wind today bringing in milder air.

a new storm system comes in tonight. maybe a little ice for some. all those details on the insta-weather plus forecast. >> to new orleans where mardi gras celebrations turned violent after a shooting on bourbon street. four people shot and one listed this morning in critical condition on the iconic street in the french quarter witnesses say a fight started outside a strip club. when gunshots erupted people pushed and ran to safety. a second man is in critical condition from his injuries. police are using cell phone and videos to track down the suspect. >> a poignant reminder today that gun violence is taking on the nation. president obama will touch on the issue in his state of the union address on tuesday. yesterday the first lady was among those who gathered in

chicago to say goodbye to a 15-year-old just weeks after performing at president obama's inauguration ceremony. ♪ >> in chicago a day of mourning for 15-year-old hadiya pendleton. >> your angel has become the face of the tragic reality of this epidemic of gun violence. >> first lady michele obama was there to help comfort a community in shock and mother in grief. >> no mother or father should ever have to experience this. >> pendleton, a majorette. >> i'm hadiya pendleton. >> performed in events surrounding the president's inauguration and was shot to death just a few days later. while there were remembrances today. >> on that day the last thing i saw was her smiling when they put her in the ambulance and from heaven above i know she's smiling down on all of us.

>> there were also demands for action. >> we can put a man on the moon but we can't come together to figure this situation out. >> it comes on the eve of the president's state of the union address in which he addresses limits on high capacity magazines and universal background checks but he acknowledged the political reality. >> there are regional differences here, and we should respect those. >> analysts say it will be hard to get that through congress. >> there are many democrats in swing states where gun rights are quite important and are seen as part of a culture. >> but on chicago's south side today young voices called on adults to do something. >> we have to stop the violence. it sounds different coming from adults than it does from another teen, and i say to you, we have to stop it now. >> and that was kristin welker reporting.

>> the time is 7:36. there's a live look right now at the inner harbor. the sun continues to rise. it officially came up at 7:04 this morning. the winds are out of the west at 3 miles per hour. the barometer has risen so the high pressure is building in. the humidity at 81%. so things are improving. at least the winds are much calmer than what we've seen in the last couple of days. the temperatures in the 20's up to our north. 18 in fred ricks rick.

-- in frederick. a chilly start is to the day. should get much better as we go into the afternoon. for one, we will have less wind. we're also going to have a great deal of sunshine later in the day. then high temperatures ranging from 40-45. the winds calm. we're in between storm systems. there's a next batch of rain that will be moving our way. a little bit of icing happening in parts of wisconsin. also north carolina. so it's the northern edge of this storm where temperatures could be cold enough for a little bit of ice and then mainly a rain event. strong thunderstorms are possible from texas to mississippi ahead of this cold front. also a blizzard starting to build in the plains from nebraska to minnesota. so just as one area of the country quiets down, of course it starts to get rocking in

other areas. what i would worry about is tonight at the onset when there could be rain. clouds build in through the later half of today and tonight then especially after 3:00 a.m. around the baltimore metro area the onset of maryland. -- the onset of rain in maryland. that rain could be enough to cause problems in the morning commute between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. then if rain continues to push east past that time and we should see clearing as we go into tomorrow afternoon. the forecast for tonight. increasing clouds. rain arrives late after midnight and the northern and western part of the state could see freezing rain. it will hoopen so quickly. we're not expecting much accumulation then it all turns to rain by the rest of tomorrow morning. if we get a little bit of sunshine we will warm into the low to mid 50's.

if it's interest reduction you must use the schedule e. >> all right. let's talk about some tips and things you can do. february you say plan and organize. >> yes. it's that time of the year where most people think they should be gathering their information, looking at last year's tax return. a lot of c.p.a.'s and tax venders have what we call organizers and we provide you with a snapshot of your tax return. >> as they say it's not too late to contribute to your i.r.a. >> no. you have until your filing due date so you can make that contribution up until april 15. if you're a small business owner you can make that to another account. >> and you say review the filing status for any life-changing events. >> sure. you got married in 2012 and if you were separated or divorced

in 2012 so married filing separately or jointly or head of household if you have dependn't children. >> and same-sex married couples will look at things differently this year, too. >> yes. >> still advantageous to file as married or separate? >> most married couples will take advantage of the married filing jointly status but there are instances where married filing separately is advantageous. if one makes a larger income. but typically and generally married filing jointly is more advantageous. >> let's talk about this code in the box. >> there's something new, code dd is represents the employer's cost of health insurance.

year and much to our surprise and a bit of a mystery because diamond is super affectionate and bright and i had her for a sleepover last night so we could get her on time. all she wants to do is snugal. she's quiet. >> she will need someone with strength. she is a strong dog. other than that, she sat when you told her and the lonely heart's club is dogs that have been with you for a long time. >> during the month of february we have our lonely heart's club which is all our dogs, cats and rabbits who have been with us for over a year and so their adoption is waived. they come with a micro chip and all their vaccinations and their -- they have been spayed or neutered. >> that takes care of it all.

>> hopefully it's a good fit for their family. >> and we're careful about that. we want to make sure it's a good match. >> so who do you think would be a good match? >> i think anybody who has a little bit of strength with them. an active family would be terrific. an active person who likes to jog would be family fabulous. but she is really a snuggler. she is going to make somebody a fabulous pet. >> you guys have something fun for february as well. you guys are holding weddings for the pets? >> yes. we have our lonely hearts club and pet wedding where we will be marrying two cats and two dogs. we have the whole thing. and the public is invited. 2:30 p.m. thursday, valentine's day of course. >> again, they areawaying the

oyster. >> people have different ways to hope it. i prefer to open it by hand. >> i stand this way from the man holding the sharp knife. >> it's tricky. >> you have to put a little bit of elbow grease in it. then i want to loosen it up from the bottom so it's easy to consume. >> like getting the bottom part of a cake out. just got to work it. >> so i open a few more and did some of the prep before. we have some cucumbers that have been salted so it gives an ocean flavor to it. >> and very small pieces. >> we try to be level. i create a few cucumber for ice. >> i said that looks like ice but it's chopped up cucumber and then you actually froze it? >> yes. >> and i will build this one up quick. i take the oyster out and

previously sliced some rock fish. and just -- >> quarter-sized. >> quick marinate it with a little lemon juice. >> that's lemon olive oil. we picked up the oysters. put a little bit of the rock fish. the rock fish has been, like i mentioned before with a little bit of lemon juice. >> you are layering it almost like an oyster taco. >> you like tacos. >> someone's baiting me in the corner because she knows how i feel about raw fish. >> you're going to try this. i heard you had a lot of oysters while you were in new orleans. so this is -- >> that was of the fried variety. my moral support. >> the whole idea is building flavors with them.
