[captioning made possible by constellation energy group] >> snow is falling around the baltimore area as a nor'easter makes its way up the coast. although there hasn't been much accumulation, many people are furious with the troubles the storm is bringing with it. we have live team coverage tonight but we check in first with meteorologist john collins in the 11 insta-weather center.

>> we've been back and forth with this storm for quite some time. first we thought we would get a lot, then we thought we wouldn't get a lot and then we thought we would get a lot and this morning it changed again. here in baltimore we're not getting much but east of the bay, they're getting hammered with snow, especially down around the ocean city area. the heaviest snows falling currently are in new jersey and off shore, the darkest blue bands you see off in new jersey in this area right here. the storm center itself is out about here, just far enough away that we weren't heavily impacted here. here you see around the baltimore area. it's less of that blue shade in the radar and more of the white. and also in that, you can see a lot of breaks in the radar. here's the general storm as it circulates northward. so you can see that all of the heavy snows are now moving up

toward new england and they're going to get more than a foot of snow and we're adding to that formula this evening, wind. so blizzard conditions in many areas to the northeast. we'll detail what's going to happen with the rest of the storm through the overnight hours coming up in the insta-weather plus forecast. stick around. now we go to shannon out in the elements. >> it's been cold and windy out here in ann arundel county. the snow has been blowing sideways for an hour. i want to show you how much has accumulated in the parking lots and side streets. you can see the parking lots picking up snow but on the corner of robinson and richie highway, the plows have done a great job keeping the roads clear. drivers have been coming in and out to fuel and get gas, thinking about their safety and how cold it is. >> the snow was blowing around,

there's a little gust on the snow. you can catch it on the windows, a little dark. it looks like it will accumulate. it's just a mess. >> nothing unusual. we had eight foot of snow last year. >> if you are going to be out on the road, many of the main roads in the area have been plowed through. as we drove down 97, we saw a lot of plows on the shoulder ready to go. but some side streets in the area may not be plowed through. if you're out and about, drive slowly and carefully and leave plenty of room for the plows. that's the latest here in ann arundel county. >> sheldon, thank you. in some areas the weather is making it difficult for some to get around whether by road or by air. >> the state highway operations center in hanover open sunday to monitor the storm. the eastern shore was hit hard early on and crews had their hands full trying to keep roads open and passible there.

closer to baltimore, the roads weren't a problem and the s.h.a. is glad the storm hit when it did. >> tomorrow and tuesday and beyond, it's generally lighter traffic this week between christmas and new year's and that helps the state highway crews. less traffic on the roads means we can clean up quicker. >> last year with multiple blizzards, the s.h.a. went way over their budget. before this latest storm, buck says the state already spent $12 million but they're prepared to keep the roads open no matter what mother nature throws at us this year this is at the core mission of what we do, plow and salt and keep our roads open and passible. we'll gowhat we have to do and if it's as bad as last year, we'll figure out how to pay for it. >> those traveling by air faced major delays and cancellations. >> being delayed is better than it being till tomorrow.

>> others weren't so fortunate. this family just got off a cruise to find their flight home to michigan was canceled. >> we can confirm you on the 28th, so we can get out of baltimore on the 28th. >> it was the same story at airports across the country as some waited for loved ones stranded on their journeys. >> if he's canceled, he's going to be in bad shape. it's him, his fiancee and four kids so they'll be stuck at midway in chicago overnight. >> if you plan on flying, the best idea is to call ahead to make sure your flight is on time and if you plan on driving somewhere, stay tuned to channel 11 for the latest on road conditions. >> track the snow with interactive radar, sues -- use the future cast feature to see where the weather is headed. and tonight's football game on nbc has been postponed until

tuesday due to the snow. football night in america will still air from 7:00 to 8:30, followed by "minute to win it" until 10:00 and an episode of "law and order s.v.u." for the first time in franchise history, the ravens are headed to the playoffs for a third year in a row. pete gilbert joins us live with a look at the win. >> the ravens clinched a berth with a game to spare, a first under john harbaugh. still something to play for next week as they hope to beat the steelers in seven days. how about the ravens, how they took care of cleveland today. smack talk from ray lewis during the week. the first quarter, a little handoff to payton hillis who tosses it to mohamed massaquoi

who lets it fly for brian robiskie. the replay showed the ball hit the turf. john harbaugh challenges. you can see it bounce there. the refs don't see that. it's a touchdown. third quarter, joe flacco with time to flow, lets it fly to the corner of the end zone for derrick mason. a touchdown, 20-10, ravens with the lead. fourth quarter, colt mccoy picked for the third time in the afternoon. ed reed, his 6th of the season, 52nd of his career. what does he do at the 32-yard line? to nobody, fortunately for reed and company, recovered by ladarius webb. the ravens are now 11-4 on the season and end the season at home next week against the bengals. later in sports, how the other a.f.c. wild card game was

>> tonight, the east coast is bracing for blizzard-like conditions from philadelphia to new england. new york city appears to be in the bull's eye and is bracing for a foot and a half of snow. the south is already digging out and this storm is wreaking havoc on holiday travelers. brian moore with the story from washington. >> a day or two earlier, this east coast storm might have been welcomed as a really white christmas. but this late december blast is what it is, a mess threatening to up-end holiday travel plans for millions.

>> it's the setup for a perfect storm, a double whammy for the nation's roadways with nine out of 10 families traveling back home in their car and a storm hitting the east coast. >> airlines canceled flights by the hundreds and rail service was disrupted, too. as a warm-up, the storm dumped several inches of snow on much of the south, from georgia on up through the carolinas, no one was getting anywhere fast. plow teams were hard at work and so were power crews. that the mall in virginia, bargain hunters took the snow in stride. >> the girls got gift cards and we had to come shop. >> in philadelphia, the game between the eagles and the minnesota vikings was put on ice, so to speak. philadelphia's mayor says rescheduling was the right call. >> an intense snowstorm with blizzard-like conditions. somewhere in the midst of this, common sense comes into play. >> new york's rockefeller center was pretty as a picture but not

for long. >> we may see up to 16 inches of snow as well as gale-force winds that could reach up to 55 miles an hour. >> from mother nature, a wintery end to 2010. here in the nation's capital, we're expecting a couple of inches of snow but one resident who won't have to worry about it, president obama, chilling on vacation in hawaii. in washington, bryan moore, wbal t.v. 11 news. >> stay with us. >> we are on the western edge, the good side of the storm because we're not getting that much snow unless you're on the east side of the bay. heavy snow on the eastern shore, it's 25 degrees at b.w.

>> your 11 insta-weather plus forecast with meteorologist john collins. >> look at our h.d. doppler radar. here we are in baltimore. the bluest bands you see here in new jersey, up on long island and parts of pennsylvania, around philadelphia, that's the heaviest snow falling right now and it's becoming wind-driven as the storm is spinning off shore and throwing snow back along the coast. the storm is just about right at our latitude at this stage of the game. we're still getting snow bands but they're lighter, the shading is whiter on the radar. that's light snow here but it becomes heavier on the delmarva peninsula, darker blue bands and especially along the beach areas so there is heavy snow in our viewing area but the heaviest is in parts of new jersey. the numbers so far today, wind gusts in the 20s. b.w.i. marshall the high was 21. we're in the 20s now so the

temperatures have dropped off. officially at the airport, only a trace of snow has been measured. .01 of an inch in liquid. morning lows were 26 and 28. the final numbers aren't in yet on today so far. snow cover so far estimated, trace amounts to maybe an inch around baltimore, the aberdeen proving grounds. eastern shore has been hit with amounts closer to six to 10 inches. we have a couple of reports of 10 inches or so. the distribution of snow, the heaviest falling on the lower eastern shore and parts of delaware. 27, edgewood, parkton, 27. only 14 at oakland right now and the winds, getting gusty. winds up to 22 miles an hour.

annapolis, 24 in dover, 21, georgetown. the closer you get to the coast, the wind is stronger. the insta-weather radar and surface map shows that storm off shore, again, feeding the heaviest snows from new jersey up into southern new york state, around new york city and parts of connecticut and this will continue to move north but then move out to sea overnight tonight. boston may not be quite as badly hit as parts of new york and down around long island or so. to the west, it's very quest. there is a storm out there. it won't affect us immediately. we still have advisories out on the west shore of the bay and around the baltimore metro area into the evening hours. warnings out for cecil county, much of the eastern shore. the red is blizzard warnings, the snow and wind combination so that's the lower eastern shore,

ocean city, southern delaware and new jersey, as well. the forecast tonight, snow ending and gusting to 25 or 35 and maybe stronger than that. winds in the low 20s, averaging out in temperatures, rather. and the snowfall forecasts ultimately for us, one inch around our area and a little more as you go to the east but not all that much. scattered clouds tomorrow, continued windy, gusts into the 30s, 30 to 34 expected for the high. insta-weather future cast shows the snow pulling away. out cape cod and moving into the sea rather than up towards canada. weather disturbance west of the mountains on tuesday. looks like we stay dry with that one. so the seven-day forecast, 32 tomorrow, 38 on tuesday, the trend is 40, 45, 48. so next week looks dry, temperatures warm up. new year's day right now looks cloudy but dry and we may have showers next sunday.

possession, colt mccoy trying to pick on ladarius webb but webb does the picking. interception at the 4-yard line. browns' next possession, mr. hillis who went for 144 last time, 109 fewer today. cleveland decides to get tricky. hillis the toss to mohamed massaquoi, who lets it fly for robiskie. great catch by robiskie but the replay shows the ball hit the ground first right there. somehow the refs disagree with that. 7-0, cleveland. second quarter, mccoy complete to massaquoi and strips massaquoi. jameel mcclain, coverage sets up, joe flacco, time to throw and a laser to t.j.

houshmandzedeh. ravens take the 10-7 lead. second-half kickoff, john harbaugh watching as the browns try an off-sides kick. the ravens get the ball at the 38. three plays later, a little play-action and joe flacco has plenty of time and that is a fairly typical result when that happens. dropped it in the basket for derrick mason, 25th t.d. pass of the season for flacco. ravens' defense bottled them up. you could say they orp fire, ed reed, in particular, locked in on colt mccoy, his second interception of the game with four minutes to play and as reed wants to do, out of the end zone and laterals to the end zone to nobody but ladarius webb saves his bacon with a recovery. ravens win 20-10, clinch the playoff berth, can still win the a.f.c. north with some help.

good times for baltimore. although ravens' rookie sergio kindle arrested earlier this morning on d.u.i. charges in howard county, ticketed on speeding, driving under the influence and failure to obey traffic control. he suffered a fall downstairs that left him with a skull fracture and today's news does not help his case for a contract next season. in chicago, winter, conditions a shootout. jets and bears from soldier feel. mark sanchez, questionable but did pretty well. jay cutler, though, has time to throw it. swing it deep for johnny knox, 40-yard touchdown. sanchez bringing back the jets, down seven, buys time rolling out and finds santonio holmes wide open, ties it at 31-31.

fourth quarter, cutler. when he's on, the stats pile up. again, knox, great catch. 38-31, chicago, in the lead. under a minute to play. jets down four, sanchez, arm looks great but the decision was regrettable, intercepted by chris harris. jets still need help to make the playoffs, help provided by rex grossman and the redskins. in jacksonville, trying to hurt the jags' chances, too. late in the fourth, david garrard, the q.b. draw. ties the game at 17-17. garrard under pressure. th was curious, the decision making, flips the ball towards lewis, kevin barnes gets the pass setting up graham gano, 31 yards out and it is good. on the road, the redskins thump jacksonville 20-17, sending the
