this is wbal-tv 11 news at 6:00. it is cool and cloudy downtown. the rain has held off, but we could still see some severe thunderstorms. that is the big story tonight. good evening. i am deborah weiner. we begin in the weather center with meteorologist john collins.

>> it took all day for things to warm up. things are getting going late in the day. let's look at the satellite picture. this is taken baltimore and northeast maryland down to lessen the chance of rain because of the cloud cover. the temperatures make all the difference in the world as far as generating the stars. the atmosphere over baltimore has been stable. the sun has broken through. thunderstorms and finally broken out. here is a look at the doppler radar. one area of storms is over delaware bay in moving towards new jersey. that is not an area of concern for us. another area of storms is moving out of virginia into western maryland near frederick county. that want thunderstorm cell gave indications there might be a

tornado in the cloud. a tornado warning is in effect for parts of western frederick county and parts of washington county for the next 20 minutes or so. let me show you where the warnings and watches are in effect. there's a watch for thunderstorms over the entire area. the tornado watch is in red. we will talk more about the forecast for this evening in the week ahead coming up. the same system responsible for our bad weather caused havoc down south after tornadoes yesterday. this is all that is left of the church in choctaw, mississippi. huge trees were uprooted. many fell on homes and other buildings. one man describes how he and his girlfriend barely escaped. >> the bricks and debris were flying. i was watching it all. i was trying to hold her down.

i told them i could not feel my legs. everything was on top of me. >> according to the national weather service, the super cell produced at least two tornadoes. the contract the storms anywhere using our interactive radar -- you can track the storm to any were using our interactive radar in real time on wbaltv.com we have lee breaking news from baltimore county. officials say a woman with a baby in her arms was hit by a car in rosedale this afternoon. she was rushed to shock trauma. we've confirmed she died a short time ago. it happened around 4:00 this afternoon at the intersection of philadelphia road near the beltway. police said the baby was not hurt. baltimore county is investigating. you can expect some traffic trouble to market the department of transportation is doing some

work that will shut down three lanes of traffic kim dacey is live at the station -- intersection tonight. >> you can see the problem. there are a lot of signs. the plan was disclosed as two plains. the department of transportation says they have to change three lanes of the street to get the work done. they are doing utility work. then they will do resurfacing and repaving. the department of public works is using this time to work on several lines and repair storm drains along lombard. both agencies are warning drivers to stay away from the area for the next two weeks if possible. if you do have to travel, expect a lot of traffic and justin and delays. >> be patient. watch for the signs. drive cautiously. be mindful of the right turn.

brett michaels remains in critical condition with a brain hemorrhage. he reportedly checked into a los angeles hospital with a severe headache. doctors discovered bleeding of the base of his brain stem. he is currently a contestant on "celebrity apprentice." here is your insta-weather forecast with meteorologist john collins. >> let's check out the radar. the rain is still west of baltimore.

the atmosphere is cool and stable now. the storms are being generated in much warmer temperatures. the late day sun is generating these stores. some are strong. this has shown indications of trying to develop a tornado. nothing has been reported on the ground with this. thunderstorm warnings reached to around frederic. this particular cell is moving eastward. the tornado warning is back in northern virginia. it is slowly moving to the east. our atmosphere it is stable. more storms are being generated to the west. let's take a wider view of the storms. the storms are headed towards the baltimore metropolitan area. they're coming into frederick county now. there were a bunch of storms that moved out over southern new jersey. it only made it to 60 degrees at the airport.
