soul it is well it is well with my soul it is well it is well with my soul >> what wonderful assurance to hear these words.
5:06 pm
it is well. it is well with my soul. and to hear those words sung by young people is immeasurably reassuring. [ applause ] many churches bemoan the fact that they are losing this generation. but when we see young people, and i wish there were some males up there, i look forward to the day when more men will get up and say it is well with my soul. [ applause ] family, relatives, friends, distinguished representatives
5:07 pm
and far, i consider it a distinct honor that my cousin, my first cousin, randolph holder, when we grew up in guyana, we didn't call him randolph. we called him neil. and i hope he doesn't get upset by my saying that it took me years to find out that neil was really randolph. it's an honor to be in this beautiful church building. ornate, immaculate, dedicated to the service and worship of christ, our risen lord.
5:08 pm
because this church has such a strong presence in this community. and that the leadership, reverend floyd flake, is a man of renown. i've been hearing about him for many years. but today for the first time my eyes have been blessed to behold you. [ applause ] please follow with me, listen as i read from the holy word. john chapter 11. it's the story of the death of lazarus. it's a long story so i'm only going to
5:09 pm
one, a man named lazarus who lived in bethany was ill. bethany was the town where mary and her sister martha lived. verse 3, the sisters sent jesus a message. lord, your dear friend is ill. verse 4, and continuing. when jesus heard it he said the final result of this illness will not be the death of lazarus. this has happened in order to bring glory to god and it will be the means by which the sun of god will be glorified. verse 17. when jesus arrived
5:10 pm
had been buried four days before. bethany was less than three kilometers from jerusalem and many judeans had come to see martha and mary to comfort them over their brother's death. when martha heard jesus was coming, she went out to meet him. but mary stayed in the house. martha said to jesus, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. but i know that even now god will give you whatever you ask him for. your brother will rise to life, jesus told her. i know, she replied,
5:11 pm
jesus said to her, i am the resurrection and the life. whoever believes in me will live and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. do you believe this? do you believe this? my message is entitled, this is not the end. this is not the end. but first of all, can you join me in a word of prayer for this message. i know you've heard a few prayers before. but one more won't do harm, right? our
5:12 pm
mary and martha in their time of sorrow. he brought them words of hope and comfort and something positive about their situation. we know that you are our god of comfort and even now we lean upon you for strength. as we prepare to hear your word, we invite you in to our midst so that the things i say and the thoughts we meditate on will be acceptable to you. you are our strength and our redeemer. amen. speakers before me have painted an excellent and picturesque montage of randolph anthony holder.
5:13 pm
referred briefly to his love of music. i would like to piggyback on those thoughts and extend them because i want to tell you how excellent a dj this man was. he was our go-to guy when we had a gionease party. and believe you me, it is not easy to play for a guyanese party. because guyanese like to have reggae, soca.
5:14 pm
like to jump up and down. and then at a certain time of the party we've got to have oldies. and the dj has to know what to play and when. the dj has got to know when to transition. randolph had that special gift. because he could sense the mood of the people and he knew the music to play. i believe this afternoon, if randolph could interact with us, he might sense our mood. and he might say look, i think i want to play a special song for you.
5:15 pm
that he might want to play today is call "return to paradise." do you know it? i'm going to give you a chance to remember it. that song was popular in the 80s. listen to the words and maybe as i get to the second verse you might remember it. it says it's paradise here, where the sun meets the sea. there's nothing to hear and so much to be. but soon i must go say goodbye to it all that homeland of mine is beginning to call. is it coming? listen to the second verse. goodbye doesn't
5:16 pm
fading dreams grow cold as ice and i've got a feeling we will meet again when we return to paradise. has it come? goodbye doesn't mean it has to be the end fading dreams grow cold as ice uh-huh. now i read the story of lazarus from the bible. and there are several thoughts that came to my mind while i was preparing this message. first of all is that lazarus' family thought that his death was the
5:17 pm
end. mary and martha and brother lazarus were good friends with jesus. the bible tells us that they lived in a town call bethany and bethany was an upscale area a few miles, about 2 miles outside of jerusalem. when lazarus took jesus. however, jesus read scripture discerningly. jesus didn't go right away. the word we might use is jesus dithered. he took his own time. and by the time jesus got there, lazarus had not only been dead,
5:18 pm
and you know if the body has gotten that far nothing can bring you back. right? the second point is that the community came out to mourn his passing. verse 17, and the reading says, many judeans had come to see mary and martha and comfort them. you see, in those days the society was communal. when randy goes back to guyana, entire villages will come out to see him. and to pay their last respects. unfortunately our society has become very insular. many people prefer to live
5:19 pm
of society and die alone. and consequently, few people are there to mourn their passing. the large number of people here including the men in blue is a testament of the kind of person randy was, the footprints that he left in the sand, it says to us all is not lost for our society. we can come together and mourn for each other again. the third thing we learned is that lazarus' passing had an
5:20 pm
when jesus saw mary weeping and the people who were there who were weeping too, the bible says his heart was touched. and he was deeply moved. and when i was a younger person growing up, i learned the shortest verse in the bible. what is it? jesus wept. verse 34. this lets us know that we too can show our emotions and weep when we feel pain. many years ago a friend of mine died. and his wife said to the children you all must behave honorably. don't show emotions.
5:21 pm
their best obey the instructions of their mother. but guess what? three days after the elder son had an emotional breakdown. i'm here to tell you that it's okay to weep but in our weeping, we do not mourn as those who have no hope. we mourn but not as those that have no hope. when the people saw jesus weeping they could not help commenting how much he loved lazarus. jesus loved lazarus and jesus loves us too. when i was a sunday school teaching, i would teach them to
5:22 pm
know, for the bible tells me so. we have a god who loved us so much that he chose to become a human. he took on human form. and he came to live among us and be like us. jesus shares in our joys and in our sorrows. jesus shares in every aspect of our lives. at the beginning of his ministry, he went to cana at the wedding feast. and when they ran out of wine, what he did? he turned water in to wine. jesus healed people when they were sick. jesus could have stayed in the security of heaven. but he chose to be among us and eventually to
5:23 pm
hands of those who did not like him. rour -- our randolph could have chosen a different job. he could have chose one that kept him behind a desk, safe and secure. instead he and the many other men in blue who operate a beat and willingly accept assignment to work in the streets among dangerous people in the hope that they could or would be able to make the community at better place for all people. i come back to a point about lazarus' death. lazarus' death was not the end. jesus promised martha that her brother will rise to life and jesus did just that.
5:24 pm
we have a god that we can rely on. when he say something, he's going to do it. but i wanted to note that jesus restored lazarus' life for a specific purpose. here's what he said in verse 4. the final result of this illness will not be the death of lazarus. this has happened in order to bring glory to god. and it will be the means by which the son of god will receive glory. lazarus did die again. because death is a natural part of life. however,
5:25 pm
there will come a time when mortal man will put on a mortality. the story of lazarus tells us that there is a hope of the resurrection. jesus said i am the resurrection and the life. whoever believes in me will live even though he dies. and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. this was no idle talk. this was no idle chatter. we have gotten accustom to our leaders saying things that they don't mean. we listen to politicians with half an ear or none at all.
5:26 pm
jesus backed up what he said. the risen jesus is a cornerstone of christianity, but people challenge the truth and the validity of that christian belief. one thing we can be sure of, and it is this. the early disciples were convinced of the truth of the resurrection. the night when jesus was betrayed, when he was being interrogated, his best friend peter was so terrified that he stood far off. and when the woman recognized him, because of his accent, and she said aren't you one of those galileans?
5:27 pm
he said hell no. three times. no. i don't know him. but after the resurrection, peter and the other disciples became so bold that they went out and proclaimed that news. if they weren't convinced it had happened, they would not have been willing to give their lives. and we have got to accept the weakness of those who were there. i am the resurrection and the life and we have the hope of the resurrection and the life. i wish to argue that jesus was not talking about the death of the physical body. we're made of body and spirit.
5:28 pm
restore the spiritual connection between us and the creator. so when he says you shall not die, he does not mean that your physical body will not die. but your spiritual body will be reconnected with the father. because this is what sin is. sin is a separation, a breaking of the relation between god and his creator. between god and you and me. so when jesus christ said you shall never die, it's your spirit that will never die. the real you will live on and on. it is such reassurance that death is not the end of us who believe in the with this hope of resurrection we can face tomorrow.
5:29 pm
the hymn says, because he lives, i can face tomorrow. because he lives, all fears are gone. because i know he holds the future. my life is worth the living. why? just because he lives. because of the resurrection you and i can dispute the second line of the second verse of the song that played to lead in to my message. the second line says fading dreams grew cold as ice. the hope of the resurrection enables
