we begin this morning with pat-down pressure. the transportation security administration is speaking out amid growing concerns over the new screening procedures in airports. comments from the head of the tsa point to a possible easing of new policies, but will that mean changes for fed-up passengers any time soon? nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington with the latest. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn good morning. expect an aggressive, invasive and perhaps embarrassing pat-down if you refuse to go through the full body scanners, but now the tsa says that procedure may not be permanent. >> she touched the prosthesis. >> reporter: marlene mccarthy says she was humiliated at airport security. a cancer patient, she refused more radiation from the full body scanner and got this instead. >> having the tsa agent then

come and cup the breast prose these sis and move it around like to confirm it's really there, that was just too humiliating. >> reporter: tsa's chief says he understands public outrage over the aggressive new hands forward search, but he's trying to detect terrorists who hide bombs in their underwear. >> we're not changing the policies. >> reporter: hours later he said those policies may change as conditions warrant. uncomfortable, secretary of state hillary clinton thinks so. >> would you submit to one of these pat-downs? >> not if i could avoid it. no. i mean who would? >> reporter: some passengers are urging an opt-out holiday protest of airport security on wednesday, but many passengers say it's a necessary invasion of privacy. >> if we go to cavity search with a rubber gloves i'll have a problem there. other than that, let her go. >> reporter: congress wants to take a closer look at the procedure and whether tsa is the agency that should be doing it.

here on capitol hill upcoming congressional hearings will take a look at whether private security selected and paid for by the government might do a better job. lynn? >> tracie potts in washington, thanks. the u.s. special enjoy for north korea says the country's claim to have secretly built a new nuclear facility is disappointing and provocative but not a surprise. stephen bossworth's comments follow a new york times kwoes report that pyongyang sequentially built a large facility to enrich uranium which an american nuclear scientist who visited the site called, quote, stunning. while bossworth downplayed the facility, top american officials warn the development could speed up the north's ability to make and deliver viable weapons. meanwhile today, south korea's defense minister told lawmakers seoul will discuss the possibility of having the u.s. bring tactical nuclear weapons back into the country. a top iranian official now says a deal for the release of two american hikers held in iran

for over a year is possible. a new trial date, february 6th, has been set for shane bauer and josh fatall who were accused of being spies after crossing into iran from iraq. sarah shourd was freed in september but the two others remain in custody. now iran's top human rights official tells anbc's ann curry that shourd was not capable of espionage, and the others may not be spies either. here's your first look at other news around america today. in florida an air force missile lifted off yesterday after being delayed several times by technical glitches. the delta 4 heavy rocket carried a new spy satellite as one owe ficial touts the largest sat tight in the world. the purpose remains unknown but an air force general says its mission is vital to national defense. in minnesota this week,

freezing rain caused hazardous conditions for drivers. the state patrol reported nearly 400 accidents in only 24 hours. at least two people were killed with at least 60 more accidents invochl vofl -- involving injuries. things have calmed considerably, but forecasters predict more bad weather, unfortunately, just in time for the thanksgiving holiday. and in illinois, chicagoans welcomed the holiday season at the 19th annual magnificent mile lights festival. a parade of floats and marching bands traveled down the festively adorned michigan avenue. an estimated 1 million people joined the festivities, billed as the largest holiday event in the country. now for a look at your national weather we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. chicago had this like random heat wave, at least for chicago's standards. >> it's not going to last long. it's a very active weather pattern is the best way i can say it. >> we'll take it. >> a lot of pressure, because this is the travel week and we

have shopping on friday and everything else and the problem is in the west. if you're a skier you love what happened this weekend. i mean they saw some of the heaviest snow totals for this early in the season ever. i'm not talking the pacific northwest, the cascades. snow resorts in california picked up three to four feet of snow and the mountainous areas are getting it today and tomorrow. that storm unfortunately has to head across the country this week. it's going to be a slow mover, so that means the east coast, you get at least two days in a row here of pretty nice weather and then by thursday and friday that nasty weather will slide to the eastern seaboard. unfortunately as of now, rain is in the forecast for say the macy's day parade there as we go into the upcoming holiday forecast. so, as far as the wet weather goes and the snowy conditions the worst of it by far right now is out in the west and it's also in montana. cold blast has come down from the north. we're talking really chilly air too. rain this morning from detroit to southern michigan and right now through fort wayne, toledo, cleveland will eventually get some rain this morning,

indianapolis too. chicago, we think you're going to get a little bit of a break and then possible thunderstorms this afternoon. south dakota has had some snow. so be careful traveling in the northern plains. that's heading up to fargo. rapid city had snow on and off all night long. as far as the temperatures, your eyes open up when you see the temperature in billings is zero right now. this chunk of art tick cold air will be settling in over the plains this week. minneapolis once again, you may not get to the freezing mark over the next couple days. today in minneapolis, temperature plummets. going to see a little bit of snow and ice this morning, maybe a coating to an inch. chicago, look at you. you're warm but then your temperatures will plunge later after those thunderstorms head on through. for everyone on the eastern seaboard, it's nice for now, but it looks like by the time the end of the week arrives that's when our stormy weather will head our way. just a little bit of everything out there, lynn. wednesday, the busy travel day, looks like the great lakes and northern plains is the travel trouble spots. >> it's a good excuse when you put on all that weight after the thanksgiving meal you stay

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. here are some of the top stories making news this morning. i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines. according to a new study, st. louis is the nation's most dangerous city. camden, new jersey, which topped last year's list came in second. detroit, flint, michigan, and oakland, california, round out the top five. the annual rankings are based on population figures and crime data gathered by the fbi. chinese state media reports that 29 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine were lifted to safety today.

a rare piece of good news for a country which is notorious for having the deadliest mines in the world. after spending more than 24 hours underground, state tv captured live pictures of the miners being brought out of the shaft to a line of ambulances. but that chinese rescue stands in stark contrast to the situation in new zealand. where 29 men remain missing after an explosion at a coal mine there on friday. this morning rescuers are testing a high-tech robot they hope will provide some key information in their search. and a new poll finds that more than half of english people want prince william and his new fiancee kate middleton to be their next king and queen, passing over his father, prince charles and his wife camilla. i'm sure that went over with them. well here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow will kick off after adding 22 points on friday. the nasdaq rose three. taking a look at overseas

trading this morning n tokyo the nikkei climbed 22 points but in hong kong the hang seng fell 81. a deal to bring ireland's ailing financial system back to life should give wall street something to be thankful for this week. european officials are working with the international monetary fund to finalize details of a bailout package. the debt ridden nation formerly applied for aid over the weekend. news of the deal pushed futures higher on the street. despite the holiday shortened week there's no shortage of data ahead. tomorrow the government comes out with an updated reading on gross domestic product for last quarter. on wednesday looking for a lift in the struggling real estate sector, sales of both new and used homes should be higher for october. black friday officially kicks off the holiday shopping season the day after thanksgiving. retailers will be in focus on wednesday, as well, with

personal income and consumer sentiment figures from last month expected to rise. tomorrow is the last day residents and businesses can file a claim for emergency financial relief from bp caused by april's gulf oil disaster. the hedge fund industry is the reported target of a massive insider trading investigation by the s.e.c. according to "the wall street journal," civil and criminal charges could be filed in a number of cases by the end of the year. keep an eye on hewlett-packard today. hp weighs in with third quarter earnings after the bell. with you -- we knew this was coming, right? a colorado man says his underwear invention could solve your privacy problems at the airport. strategically placed fig leaves made of a special mix of metals are designed to keep you covered during a full body scan. but there's a catch, it's still unclear whether the privacy panels will land you in line for a full body pat-down. bring a little style to this controversy. if you think it's beginning to feel a lot like christmas a

michael vick bobbled the snap but managed to get the ball to lashawn mccoy and he did the rest. 50 yards untouched to the house. the eagles won it 27-17. let's go to new england. tom braid year over the middle to wes welker. brady threw a pair of touchdowns. pats up by as many as 18. colts with a chance, down three. but peyton manning was picked off by james sanders. patriot won 31-28. last week was a power outage, this week a fan ran across the field at the meadowlands stadium. sprinting from the end zone to the end zone before being taken out by security. the jets rex ryan had a laugh and had reason to smile. for the third straight week, new york won on their final possession of the game. mark sanchez to santonio holmes. jets beat the texans 30-27. pittsburgh, where richard seymour was ejected for punching ben roethlisberger. then, the steelers slapped it on the raiders. roethlisberger threw three touchdowns, this one for 52 yards. steelers won big 35-3. speaking of being slapped around, the vikings took one on

the chin, aaron rodgers with four touchdowns, three of them to greg jennings. vikings are now 3-7. packers won it 31-3. redskins and titans went into overtime. from 48 yards out and he got it. washington won 19-16. vince young injured his thumb and then had a meltdown in the locker room. his future with the titans is up in the air. jimmie johnson has done it again, he overcame a 15-point lead by denny hamlin to win nascar's chase for the cup. hamlin's chances disappeared when he spun out on lap 23. johnson finished behind carl edwards and that was good enough for a cup. it's his unprecedented fifth straight title. that's your "first look" at sports i'm fred roggin. >> another quick look at the weather here's nbc's bill karins. >> good morning. for everyone on the eastern seaboard, you're waking up, it's a warm morning. temperatures are warmer than yesterday afternoon in areas. we're in the 50s all the way up here into new york city. a little bit of fog and drizzle

out there this morning. be careful, a little extra time driving especially around the d.c. area and baltimore. new york city had a little drizzle overnight. the roads may be a little damp. it's going to be a dry day, showers extreme northern new england and rain through the ohio valley that should clip erie and buffalo and syracuse. the forecast today, a mild day for this time of year, upper 50s, near 60s this time throughout the region. overall, it should be relatively dry, the exception up there in buffalo. into tuesday, not a lot changes. still very mild. look at mid 60s in some cases here. where rain will be in mostly new york and pittsburgh. by the time wednesday arrives we clear it out and gets chillier. once again, the travel tunnel spot lynn all week long will be chicago to minneapolis with cold and rainy conditions. >> all right, bill, thanks so much. i know you're going to be sitting on the edge of your seat for this one.

part 1" set a franchise record taking in $125 million over the weekend. that's the sixth best opening of all time. with over $61 million friday, the movie had the fifth biggest opening day ever. and, at $12.4 million, it had the best-ever opening weekend in imax theaters. you get the point, it did really well. the film also added $2505 million from 54 other countries, bringing its worldwide total from just one weekend to over $330 million. and the only other opener, russell crow's, the next three days. it was swamped along with the rest. it finished fifth. managing just under $7 million. and finally elsewhere, the american music awards last night belonged to that guy, justin bieber, the 16-year-old heartthrob went four for four, winning every award he was nominated for, including favorite artist, beating out the likes of eminem, usher, katy
