12:00 eastern and on monday, join me for a special youtube lifestream. you will be able to drop a question in the chat and we will answer life. that is tonight last word. the 11th hour starts now. tonight, speaker mike johnson heads down to mar-a- lago to meet with donald trump as the far right threatens his job. plus, he won hundred and $42 million gambling illegally, then he lost $183 million. the former interpreter is now in hot, hot water with the doj. the spotlight we will break on what the movement is and what it could mean for the election and why supporters are so deeply supported to donald trump. the 11th hour gets underway on this friday night. good evening, once again.
8:02 pm
we are now 207 days away from the election. we are just days away from the historic, first ever criminal trial of a former president of the united states of america. on monday morning, jury selection will begin in the manhattan district attorney's case against donald trump. today, the judge denied trump's efforts to delay the trial on the ground of too much pretrial listening. he is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to an allegedly hush money payment to stormy daniels. the presumptive republican nominee spoke about the case earlier today alongside house speaker, mike johnson, don at mar-a-lago. dave gutierrez has those details. >> reporter: tonight on the eve of his manhattan hush money trial, former president trump is defiant saying he is willing to testify in his own defense and he slams components and prosecution by a democratic va.
8:03 pm
you plan to testify? and what i would testify, absolutely. is a scam. that is not a trial. that is a scam. >> reporter: it comes as the former president is doing a political lifeline to mike johnson. when we are getting along with the speaker. >> reporter: the first public event since johnson was elected speaker last october. yet the republican majority faces a trump from marjorie taylor green trying to oust him. >> you're doing about as good as you are going to do. i'm sure that she understands that . i know she has a lot of respect for the speaker. >> meanwhile, vice president kamala harris was in the state of arizona today. she slammed the states near- total abortion been and his role in specifically turning roe v wade. let's get smarter with the hard of our lead out panel. with this women's squad, it is
8:04 pm
a fantastic one. special correspondent for vanity fair and msnbc contributor. susan glasser joins as a staff writer for the new yorker. former assistant district attorney in the manhattan district attorney's office, she is now and msnbc legal analyst. susan, you wrote a book on the inner workings of donald trump and the way this man's mind works. he now says he is going to testify in this case. do you think he is actually going to do it? >> what he said on the courthouse steps with no consequences is very, very different from on the stand where he could perjure himself. >> yeah, there are not a lot of lawyers that would want to sign up for that duty. you know? as we know, donald trump is a full employment act for lawyers. if you look at the records of the many, many investigations of donald trump, including when he was president, those who worked for him in the past were
8:05 pm
pretty united in saying that he did not want to put them on the stand. they did not want to put them under oath. they did everything, as you know, to avoid having him testify in the molar investigation. so, we will see if he follows through. it would not be the first time that he said he was going to do something that he did not end up doing. >> capron, you are our legal counsel tonight. this was your office. so i need to know, how do you feel about this? can you believe this case is coming to pass? what is it like for first colleagues? what are you expecting next week. >> anything can happen when you donald trump, assuming that some unforeseen event doesn't happen. jury selection will start on monday. this is an office that has many, big high profile clients. >> but the former president of the united states is the biggest. this is the biggest case in the
8:06 pm
offices history. clearly alvin bragg, he has only been in office two years but it will be the biggest case in history for this attorney. i agree, i don't believe that there is any chance that donald trump will testify. most defendants don't. he won't testify. if he were by some strange chance to testify, the judge would have to keep sending the jury out of the room because he won't be able to control himself. the judge will have to set him down. it is different in a fraud case. he did not testify in his own defense. he was called there. >> it was a full beard >> he was called by the ag office. by then the judge was trying to shut him down but just let them go because there was no jury. it's not going to happen. >> can we go to the point you had at the beginning, if the trial starts. is there anything he could do between now and monday? are there any more hail mary passes his lawyer can throw at the judge that could actually be cause for delay? like after today, you get what
8:07 pm
you get, you don't get upset. see you monday morning, brush her teeth. >> what she'd be judge that they ran to three different times this week. there are no legal options. even if you were to file a motion that doesn't event the judge from continuing picking the jury. there are no legal options that he could do to stop this case from going forward. >> i know we have gotten desensitized because donald trump has had legal troubles for years and years, even before he was president. but just put this in perspective for us. we are talking about a former president of the united states. the current republican front runner from a historical context perspective, the wow factor of it all. >> i think in the industrial complex there are so many trials . here is the truth. this guy is the republican
8:08 pm
nominee for president. he is running for president and he is having a criminal trial. by the way, it is a criminal trial for the money he paid an adult film star after his third wife delivered his fifth child. but, put the wife aside. it was hush money payment to hide from the american people because he was trying to influence the way he was voting. >> he is a republican nominee for president. he is like mr. evangelical. right? now he is going to go on trial for hush money payments, which are election interference. i think this is actually much worse then we all, in our cynical way, are seeing it. i think it has real implications. from what i guess you have not heard people from his supporters saying god chooses unexpected messengers. >> it is three weeks of them watching their unexpected messenger at his fixer to
8:09 pm
testify. i think it is a lot. they are not going to like this. >> today down at mar-a-lago, donald trump and the current house speaker were actually supposed to talk about election integrity. instead, they were basically. mongering about undocumented immigrants, voting and how all of this is going to impact election results. which is an absurd -- is it going to help them in terms of riling up his base? >> all, look. this is the trump campaign. ignore what you can't control and change the story into all of the terrible, scary, bad, awful things for people. especially people are collar -- of color are going to do to
8:10 pm
you. what is amazing is he has turned, not only the republican party, but essentially the housing representatives and speaker mike dobson is an example of that. it becomes a subsidiary of the donald trump campaign. i think that is what this visual reinforces today. remember, mike dodson is an accidental speaker. perhaps the weakest speaker of our lifetime, if not of modern times period. he would not be in the office of donald trump had not anointed him. he is there to try to save his job. so, trump is not only the republican nominee, to molly's points, but he is essentially acting as the de facto speaker of the united states are now in controlling what does and doesn't come up as a boat on the floor of representatives. what you think johnson going down there to kiss the ring was enough? the person inside congress who is targeting him, who has him
8:11 pm
on thin ice is his fellow republican, marjorie taylor greene. >> while she is going for him, she it doesn't actually have her own point of view. she reports to her dad , donald trump. >> this is the big question. right? is mike johnson the speaker of the house? is donald trump really be speaker of the house? is marjorie taylor greene the speaker of the house? what happened today was at the behest of donald trump, right? mike johnson went down there to make a law that is already a lot. right? people who are not citizens cannot vote in an american election. that is the law. that has been the law. they made a law that is not a real lot to somehow talk about election interference. it was really a fiasco today, but it definitely made speaker johnson look like he serves at the pleasure of former president donald trump. >> vp harris was back in arizona today hammering his
8:12 pm
abortion stance. there is no question that extreme abortion restrictions are unpopular. are democrats doing everything they can and should do to seize on that? >> look, their strategy this year is to emphasize putting referendum on the ballot in states that will bring out democratic voters. that is the hope. the problem for democrats is that there are not a ton of truly battleground states where they are going to have these referendum this year. arizona happens to be one of them. i think what happened this week in arizona with the supreme court of the state reinstating in 1864 law basically banning almost all abortions in the state, this is a remarkable turn in politics. remember, joe biden only won arizona by like 10,500 votes in 2020.
8:13 pm
i think there is a real sense that if this might have been slipping away a bit, now it is very much back in play for democrats. you have republican strategists openly talking about a political earthquake as a result of this that is going to sink their candidate. i think it is very significant. now, advocate say that they have gotten enough signatures to get that referendum on the ballot in arizona this fall. that is the case, i think it is significant. nevada is the other battleground state where you are likely to see an abortion vote this year. for democrats, that is an issue they would like to keep talking about. you know, donald trump did this. that is their new tagline. >> before we get to november, let's talk about where we are right now and what this actually means for people in arizona . this, i know you have been hearing it for 2 days, is actually a civil war era law. a lot of the language and it is very vague in the states attorney general said she will not prosecuted anyway.
8:14 pm
how difficult is this for lawyers and doctors to deal with? >> she said she want prosecuted, but there are also county attorneys in arizona who are elected. she said she has supervisory authority over them. well, good luck with that. they are elected. this law says if you perform an abortion you can be prosecuted for a felony. if you are convicted, the two sentences two years. they have a right to be concerned and say you know, i'm just not going to risk it. this is a horrible law for reproductive rights in arizona, but this is the result of the supreme court overturning roe v wade. this is the inevitable result that will happen. >> what is your take on this on? trump is the one who enabled all of this because he lined everything up for roe v wade to be overturned. he is kind of doing a tap dance this week. i am not sure how he can. >> it is interesting. we are going to kick it back to
8:15 pm
the states. he had to have known this arizona decision was coming down. it was so preposterous. we are going to take them out to be states. arizona, the republican legislature. >> the next day. it went okay. he will kick it back to 1850. >> we are going to kick it all the way back. >> you remember the president that did that? arizona wasn't a state. a 10-year-old girl could give consent. this is the law. the other lozenges are wild stuff if you read them. i think, look, they are still trying. the democrats in arizona state house are trying to overturn this. they are still trying. but ultimately, it will be enacted. republicans want this. it is like they are campaigning for democrats. >> some republicans wanted. >> thank you so, so much. thank you all. when we come back, this is the story everyone in your life is talking about and you might be saying what happened? i know i am.

there is a new force in american politics that has become more visible and way more vocal. it is linked to christianity. the focus is much broader, with a goal of tearing down the wall between church and state it is called christian nationalism. it is now a very big part of many republican campaigns. here to talk about this, some fantastic efforts. graduate chair at the university of pennsylvania. she is also an msnbc columnist. she wrote the book "white evangelical racism". >> peter is here, the contributing writer for the atlantic . catherine store joins us. investigative reporter and author who is covered fully just -- religious liberty for over a decade. her latest work is the power worshipers inside the dangerous
8:32 pm
rise of religious nationalism. this is such an important conversation. people don't realize what is happening. the conservative christians and the religious right have always been a political force or at least for the last several decades. but, this is different. what is christian nationalism? >> it is the belief that america is a christian nation and was made to be a christian nation for that church and state separation that jefferson talked about in the dan barry letter is not applicable. they want church and state to be together. the other part of this is they look at what the founders and framers said and said oh no, this is a christian nation. like general flynn said it when he got upset with that. he generally said america is in the bible. i don't know where america is in the bible, but please enlighten me. >> he said this. america had a special place in biblical history. in biblical prophecy.
8:33 pm
so, for lots of people, the way that they think about christian nationalism is that this is a god ordained country that is been blessed in a certain way and that christianity should be the law of the land we should all be following christian rules. christ should be at the center of everything and christian nationalism means the foundations of the government are about christianity and not about freedom of religion. >> peter, you are a conservative christian. how would you describe this movement? >> malicious and dangerous. i think your description was accurate. it was ominous. i think it is a threat to american democracy, but i think it is -- it is a desecration of the christian faith. i think at the core identity for a lot of these people were christian nationalists, it is a whole series of other things, political partisan, cultural,
8:34 pm
psychological identities. a grafted christian faith or their version of the christian faith to support and validate these pre-existing views. it is important to say that not all christians or even evangelicals are christian nationalists. it is a loose term. but in terms of how professor butler described it, that movement exists. it is growing. the movement doesn't have to be extremely large to be dangerous . >> a lot of people may think this is just about abortion or prayer in schools. it is a lot more than that. how did it become so powerful? >> the movement is this powerful and strong movement because it has invested for over 50 years in a number of organizations which not only promote the message in ideology, but also build political power.
8:35 pm
these organizations are often interconnected. they are policy groups, think tanks, legal advocacy groups. others that focus on legislation or data or networking. they often draw clergy into networks and give the messaging tools to turn out their congregants to vote for far right candidates. the thing to keep in mind is the movement is antidemocratic at all levels. it rejects our founding principles in the principle of equality and pluralism that wraps up the best of the american promise. >> what is it that people see in american culture today that they are so vehemently opposed to? >> the christian nationalists? >> yes. it is a really good question. i think there is pretext that is going on. for some of them there is a fear of awoke ideology that is going to destroy the country with the beliefs and values
8:36 pm
that they care about. objective conditions of the country are relatively good, certainly as good or better under joe biden or donald trump. there are areas of justification as much is there is as cause for people on the right christian nationalist movement. they are so twinned in this ideology of aggression and militancy. it is unforgiving in this nature. there is britishness and brutality to it. i think it is tied to feelings of dishonor and disrespect and also, a fear of losing power, including a lot of white evangelicals living power in america because it is more diverse. it is a concoction of different

emotions. whatever they are, they are together and aggravated. it is an unbelievable movement. >> what i hear is this fear or anger about losing white power. >> yes. >> there are all sorts of christians in the united states of america. who was attracted to this form of christianity? >> i want to start out with a line for my book where i talk about the promise of whiteness. the promise of whiteness is about having authority and power and specifically white male power. one of the reasons why i think people are attracted to this whether they be white christians or not white christians. it is because it is a sense that they can have a proximity to power. that is the first thing. the second is nostalgia. let's hope that we can go back to the times like the 1950s or something. or americanism as it was called in the 1950s or back when it is 2008 election.
8:38 pm
it was going to be america first. there have been all of these kinds of bits. right? i think one of the things we really have to consider is that these are people who don't want immigrants. they don't want any difference. they want a homogenized america. it means being white and christian. >> if we did not have these big education and career opportunities, we would be home raising those children. >> exactly. >> it would be exactly like it was with the rnc rebuttal . we would be in our kitchens. we would be it nice wives, we would not speak up when we were spoken to you unless it was our husband speaking to us. so these are the kind of things that people are attracted to and want. when you start to talk about the appeals to the republican party, specifically the ones president trump is making. he is making an appeal that i

extremists. a sort of craven ness in their own quest for power. so, the crisis we are facing today is really a crisis of american democracy. i believe specifically, a crisis of republican party. of course, there are many good people who identify as republican. but, unfortunately, they have not rained in the extremes of their party and the idea that the leader is going to come her on and come around and rein in those extremes now. it is kind of wishful thinking. trump is the leader of the republican party in the entire republican party has came to the christian nationalism movement. >> what is the end goal? >> i think it is power, but a different kind of power. the ends justify the means. they want power to advance
