i'm excited to see what it's like because i've never seen an eclipse before and it's going to be exciting to see that experience. >> it ties us to the universe the way we almost never get to experience. it's dark in the middle of the daytime. the moon swallows the sun. it is just awesome. people experience a total eclipse just find it unbelievably emotionally powerful. >> tomorrow we will all be looking to the sky to catch a glimpse of something we will not see for another 20 years. millions of people have already hit the road and the skies to find the perfect place to watch tomorrow's total eclipse of the sun. axial's is reporting that short- term airbnb rentals are booked solid in and around the path of totality. wherever you are, please make sure you wear the proper eclipse viewing glasses, like

9:55 pm
tomorrow's eclipse without using any special glasses? >> sure. there are a number of what i call indirect ways to observe an eclipse in these ways are with you standing with your back to the sun. for example, if you go to the kitchen a dig around in the kitchen, you will find any strainer we call a colander, each one of those little holes is what is called a 10 hole calendar so if you hold the calendar so that it gets the colander and you look at the little dots of light underneath the colander on a shaded area, you will see images of the eclipse or if you have a piece of pegboard masonite, you know, that brown stuff you see in stores with hooks that hold things? that stuff does the same thing. you can also make a pinhole projector just using a piece of aluminum foil cut out onto a card with a hole poked in it and that whole will act as a pinhole camera, too. these are all great because you are standing with your back to

the sun and looking at a projected image. >> all right, this is more than just a scientific phenomenon. this is become a real cultural moment. why are people so fascinated by an eclipse? >> well, eclipses are rare. they are unique and could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the other pieces, everyone loves to participate in some sort of activity of the universe. we, as humans on this planet, are connected to the night sky even though we are not all astronomers, but the way i see it, nobody doesn't like to look at the moon. everybody loves to look at the moon, and we love to look at the night sky, so here is an astronomical event that people can directly participate in that connects them to the mechanics of the universe in a very personal way, so everybody wants to be part of that. >> derek pitts, chief astronomer and planetarium director at the franklin institute in philadelphia. thank you very much for coming to the sunday show.
