eastern. right now, it's the sunday show with jonathan capehart. k is. congress returns to work this week with a full plate of pressing issues. including growing frustration of the israel-hamas war. funding for ukraine. the future of speaker mike johnson and where the democrats help johnson keep his job if marjorie taylor greene follows through on a motion to vacate. we are joined live in the studio to discuss. florida, florida, florida. the state supreme court cleared the way for a strict abortion ban that also put the issue on the ballot this november. how that could shake up the presidential race as donald trump says he will have something to say about abortion this week. congresswoman barbara lee, chair of the pro-choice caucus here to talk about what's at stake. and a little lol from snl. house republicans have introduced a bill to rename washington's dallas d.c.

airport after donald trump. airports are a lot like from. a chaotic nightmare that turned two against your own family. >> and jonathan capehart. this is the sunday show. >> after being away for two weeks, congress returns to washington on tuesday with a to do list filled with daunting challenges. at the top of the list, the israel-hamas war. today marks six months since the deadly october attack on israel when hamas killed 1200 people and took over 250 hostages. a lot has changed in the past six months. 11 days after the terrorist attack, president biden flew to israel to embrace netanyahu in a show of solidarity with the

israeli people. fast forward to thursday, and the president had a tense phone call with netanyahu from the white house over his execution of the war. which has decimated the gaza strip and killed more than 33,000 palestinians and displaced 1.9 million more. the reason for the phone call was the killing of seven aid workers with the world central kitchen, and the founder said this about how israel is waging war. >> this doesn't seem a war against terror. it doesn't seem anymore a war against defending israel. at this point, it's a war against humanity itself. you cannot be conducting war in such a way. you cannot be destroying every building every hospital every school, every university. you cannot be destroying the future for decades of more than 2 million palestinians. >> today, israel's military announced it will withdraw troops from southern gaza. cease-fire negotiations also resumed in cairo. american, qatari, and egyptian officials overseeing talks

between israel and hamas. pressure will build here at home as the united states prepares for potential retaliation from it i run over airstrikes in syria on april 1st. chuck schumer said today that the standoff raises the stakes for congress to pass foreign aid. >> tensions in the middle east are very high. that's why we are going to pass the national security supplemental. it's critical, and we are all urging speaker johnson to put it on the floor of the house. over in the republican- controlled house, everything from military funding for israel and ukraine to rebuilding the francis scott key bridge in baltimore will be on the docket for it as will the future of the speakership of mike johnson. he is still at risk of a motion to vacate from marjorie taylor

greene who former speaker mccarthy seems to think is a serious legislator. >> one thing i've always found about her is that she is a very serious legislator that deals with policy. >> i beg to differ. the fact that she filed the motion after johnson saved us from a government shutdown shows that ntg is always itching to punish any real attempt at governing, which means democrats could be faced with a tough decision. save johnson or let him sink. joining me now, democratic congressman rochon of california, member of the house armed services committee and gerry connolly of virginia, member of the house foreign affairs committee. both are members of the oversight committee. congressman, welcome to the sunday show. thank you both very much for being here. you said that you would save speaker johnson on two conditions. have those changed? >> no. if he brings a clean bill and

you grant funding, he would be doing the responsible thing. he should be funding the bridge in baltimore. those are common sense priorities and they would be willing to work across the aisle if he does that. >> congressman connolly. >> know. i don't believe rewarding speaker johnson for doing his job as a smart policy. there's lots of problems i think doing that. he is the most of the illogical right-wing speakers since the 1830s. everything he stands for is antithetical to democratic values. keeping him in office is being complicit when we do that. secondly, this is extortion. where do we stop? this time it's ukraine, what next? and third, there is liability. what kind of shelflife is mike johnson going to have in his own caucus when he is the speaker at the sufferance of democratic votes. that's not going to be a long shelf life. >> let me speak with you here. so if you don't save speaker johnson, who's going to be the next speaker? >> hopefully, hakeem jeffries.

>> agree. >> republicans are down to a one-vote majority. it's very fragile but it's not our job to save her republican speaker. especially one as far right as mike johnson. he is wrong from a democratic point of view on every issue imaginable. gun rights, women's reproductive rights, lgbtq writes. he litigated, not only voted the wrong way and certifying president biden's election, but litigated it. what democrat wants to be associated with that kind of record? >> jerry is right on all the facts. he's extreme. he's ideological. as a horrible record on lgbtq us equality. a horrible record on abortion rights. he did actually litigate overthrowing 2020. the question is people in ukraine desperately need this aid. if he doesn't bring the bill to the floor, you are basically giving put in a victory. and we need the money for the

bridge. so i would not vote affirmatively for johnson, but could i vote to table something if it is part of a deal on a ukraine bill, i would entertain it. >> all right, guys, disabuse me of this nickel view. it is not even cynical. i have no faith that speaker johnson will be able to get a ukraine funding bill through and an israel funding bill through with the funding for the francis scott key bridge. am i wrong for thinking that? it's great to say hey, if you do this, you will get my vote but i don't even think he will get to that point. >> i think those are three separate issues. on the francis scott key bridge, we're talking $600 million. we peddle most of trillion dollars into the pentagon in defense, and it's shameful that we can get $600 million allocated right away. for ukraine, the aid has to be a clean vote. israel is more complicated. i was on a letter to speaker pelosi and 40 democrats sang

the more offensive weapons to israel while they are still killing civilians in an indiscriminate way. i think that is going to be a complicated vote. >> i think we will get to a vote on both ukraine aid and on rebuilding the key bridge in baltimore. there are over 300 votes in the house of representatives, bipartisan, to vote for ukraine aid. speaker johnson knows that. it's going to be an increasing pressure on him from a moderate common sense republican, to support aid to ukraine. key leaders of the republican congress, chairman of the committee, armed services committee, chairman of the foreign affairs committee, all outspoken advocates of ukraine. he cannot continue to bottle that up. let the well of the house be exercised. bring a bill to the floor and we either pass it or we don't. >> the congressman talked about the letter that you signed with former speaker pelosi putting conditions on israel.

chris van hollen today urged the united states to withhold arms to israel until the humanitarian crisis in gaza is addressed. let's hear what he had to say. >> until those conditions are met. and no, we should not be sending more offensive weapons to israel. not to stop them permanently, but to effectively use our leverage. that is what we are asking the president of the united states to do. >> congressman, what do you make of what senator van hollen said and did you send that letter that congressman khanna and former speaker policy signed? >> i was not aware of the letter, so it wasn't something that i signed. i favor the position that chris van hollen to start to chelated which is we have to use our leverage on the netanyahu government to open up massive humanitarian aid in gaza. we should not be providing more offensive weaponry that could be used in gaza until and

unless the conditions the president sat down with nothing i you are met. if not been yet met. >> congressman mike turner accused his colleagues of spreading russian propaganda in the house. let's listen. >> we see directly coming from russia attempts to mask communications that are anti- ukraine and pro-russia messages. some of which we even hear being uttered on the house floor. there are members of congress today who still incorrectly said that this conflict between russia and ukraine is over nato, which of course, it is not. >> that's a republican chair of the intelligence committee saying something that i had gotten used to them ignoring. >> you don't have to be on the intelligence committee to know republicans have been echoing talking points for putin. i mean, it's mind-boggling. the party of reagan basically wants to appease. and, give them a chunk of

ukraine. let him do what he wants. what is that sending to him? take a chunk of taiwan. it's appalling. >> i'm on the oversight committee. i watched jim jordan on judiciary and coma on oversight who are collaborating on an impeachment effort against president biden. who is the primary witness? their primary witness is a russian named alexander smirnoff. he is in jail today because he lied to the fbi about the whole verissimo scandal that turned out to be a lie. he was not there, he did not hear it, there were no bribes. that's their primary witness. he admitted that his sources are russian agents. so it's not only that russian bots are infiltrating republican propaganda. they are actually prime witnesses for what is now a thoroughly discredited impeachment. >> what he did was get dirt on joe biden. >> which was false.

he tried to get dirt. >> likes the raccoon with the cotton candy in the bowl of water. it drops and it disappears and the raccoon is like, what? congressman, before i let you go, i have to ask you about the bill you filed in congress. in response to this effort to rename dallas, and architecturally beautiful airport, to rename it for donald trump. you introduced a bill to rename a prison in florida after tromp. >> the federal penitentiary regular mar-a-lago. i thought for a guy who's now got 88 criminal indictments, criminal, +2 major civil penalty trials that have already been resolved, costing him about half $1 billion, i think it's only fitting that if republicans really want to honor donald trump, the most appropriate way to do that is to name a federal prison. he might be visiting soon.

abortion. on monday, florida's supreme court upheld the state's 15 week abortion ban and give the green light to governor ron desantis' six-week band which will go into effect on may 1st. at six weeks, many women don't even know they are pregnant. thus making the florida law one of the strictest bands in the country. but the justices also ruled that a question about whether to explicitly enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution can go on the ballot in november. this could spell real trouble for republicans and donald trump. abortion rights have one in every state where they've appeared on the ballot since the u.s. supreme court overturned roe v wade in 2022, boosting voter turnout. this all appears to have the twice impeached four times indicted on 88 accounts former president floundering for a response. after the florida courts decision, trump announced that his campaign will, quote, be making a statement next week on

think about what he did and what he said. he appointed supreme court justices. acknowledged the fact that he was responsible for getting rid of a person's right to make their own health care decisions as it relates to their healthcare. as it relates to abortion. that's what he did. don't believe anything else that he says about this. he is going to move forward. i'm confident and uphold his position which he has shown us, which is to end roe versus wade. >> president biden lost florida by three percentage points in 2020. with abortion on the ballot, do you think he has a chance of flipping this november do you think? >> people have really galvanized around these ballot initiatives, because they realize throughout the country, especially in red states, that

this is about our democracy. this is about our freedom. this is about these right-wing judges and these terrible restrictive abortion bands restricting a person's decisions and ability to exercise bodily autonomy. so i'm confident that people normally in florida but throughout the country are going to rally around what's taking place in florida and make sure that we have a turnout like we've seen in other states that's going to enshrine the right to an abortion into the constitution, and to limit government interference. that's what this is about. it's about our democracy and it's about our freedom to be able to make our own health care decisions. >> congresswoman lee, you have been so open about your own abortion story. can you believe all these years later that women still have to fight for reproductive rights? >> it is hard and this is really devastating in many respects. the clock is being turned back.

because i did have an abortion when i was 15, way before roe. i had to go to mexico to get it and i was terrified just like now. it was illegal there, in texas, and california. it was a back alley. i was terrified because i thought one, that i could die and two, that i could be put in jail just like now. so we have got to fight to make sure that we at the federal level codify the right to an abortion into our federal law. that's the women's health protection act, which we have fought for and passed a couple of times. we cannot allow the clock to be turned back. i believe in florida and in these other states, once these submissions get to the ballot, people will vote to make sure that the government does not interfere with their own health care decisions in terms of the right to have an abortion. >> one of your mentors was the late congresswoman shirley chisholm. the first black woman elected

to congress in first ever to run for president. how does she inspire you then and what do you want young people who may be frustrated with our political system today to know now? >> well, thanks. you know that i knew shirley chisholm very well. she encouraged me. in fact, she made me register to vote. fast forward to today, so many young people with the democratic party, the republican party, who represent the views of what i have and the aspirations that as a young single black woman on public assistance and food stamps, couldn't afford childcare, had to take my children to class. you know, i didn't believe that politics would make life better for me. even though i was very aware. i was in the community working with the black panther party.

and as the film shows, she really insisted that i had something to contribute. just like now. these people, i tell you, john, they are right. they understand the world in which we live. the have a sense of morality. they engage, but they have not figured out how partisan politics have helped shake the world and make their life better. including the legislation. that's what they provided for me. she gave me a glimpse of what it would mean to be a black woman who could represent the views and the aspirations of not only black women and people of color, but everyone because of our history, history for struggle and because we care about making the world better. not only for ourselves but for everyone. that's the lesson she taught me and that's the lesson i know these young people will embrace if we do our job to connect our

show. since you are the newbie here, just give me your reaction to former speaker, now private citizen kevin mccarthy lauding all of this preys on marjorie taylor greene as a serious legislator. >> it is rich coming from him,. i don't agree, but -- >> it is bananas, because she still -- even though she has not made it a -- what is the term of our -- privileged motion. even though it is not a privileged motion, she is one step away from doing it. you think she will do that? >> i think his actions when he sent the papers for impeachment to the senate, i think that speaker johnson actually thinks she might do it. i think he is taking this course of action to prevent her from doing it. >> interesting. what do you think of this high praise of marjorie taylor greene? >> i think it speaks more to

what we should think about kevin mccarthy event marjorie taylor greene. kevin's judgment has never been exactly startling politically in the last and i don't know, decades. he is a guy who now wants to be part of the maga comeback in washington. he wants to be in trump's good graces. he know that she is still a person in his good graces. i think this speaks more about kevin's weird desperation than it does about you know -- then an analysis of who marjorie taylor greene is. he understands in the trump power universe, she ranks up here and mike johnson ranks down there. >> i'm going to save you from having to even talk about ntg, and have you respond to donald trump and something he said on tuesday in wisconsin. watch this. >> should we prepare for a change in position? >> not a change in position. it's going to be something that's very important.

you have to go with your heart. you have to go with your spirit. it's going to be something that i don't think people will be overly surprised, but we also have to remember we have to win elections. it's very important. we have to win elections. otherwise you collect where you were. >> renee, donald trump there is talk about this pending announcement, whatever it is, about abortion. in that statement, it's the typical donald trump. yes, no, maybe, but maybe yes no. >> it's talking loud and saying nothing is james brown one said. he goes on and on and on about this and that. donald trump doesn't want to talk about abortion except when he wants to talk about abortion. that's when he wants to turn around and sam the person who took down roe v. wade. nobody else could do that. he knows that this isn't a winning issue for republicans and it is certainly not a winning issue for him. the fact he is going to make a statement, i just don't think it's going to even out everything. he's going to be all over the

map with this just like he was in that statement. he did not even say the word abortion drama for crying out loud. i think that this will do nothing in his attempt on one of the most crucial issues this november. >> before we get a break, megan, how do you think that the biden campaign is going to take advantage of whatever donald trump says about abortion? >> i think the campaign is going to continue to capitalize on abortion being a top issue for democrats in the midterms and really conservative states, that this will be impactful on a lot of people, women and men. moderates care about this issue deeply and i think they will capitalize on whatever he says crazy one way or the other. >> and rick, let me get your thoughts on this before we go to break. >> i think that this is an issue that is absolutely the biggest externality of the campaign. the problem for donald trump is that nothing he does will satisfy his own people. nothing he does will make him

news emma that this is what he was going to do. let's take a look at the -- just this. a campaign video from the biden reelection campaign. slamming trump for promising tax cuts to billionaires. >> when he thinks the cameras turned on, he tells his rich friends, quote, we are going to get you tax cuts. that makes bananas hell quite frankly. >> the hypocrisy is just outrageous. this is what he says to his billionaire friends. not quite what he is saying and has rallies. >> we have a plan. asking his good buddies to begin to pay their fair share. >> this is a buddy film i never thought i would see. bernie sanders and president biden together there. you could talk about cutting billionaires -- cheating the system out of money by not paying their fair share of taxes. but does it resonate?

>> i think it does. there was a column today in the washington post backordered a pulsing 57% of republicans actually do think corporate greed is the cause of inflation and raising taxes on billionaires is important as well as 87% of democrats. i think it is an issue that crosses party lines here and i think it resonates well with the middle class. >> renee, i am struck by the fact that donald trump there on the gilligan's island of ultra wealth there in palm beach, raising all of this money, so they say, $50 million, telling the people hey, i'm going to keep your taxes low. this man could get the gold medal in golf, but that's kind of -- pardon the pun, rich. >> it's the shape shifting. he will adjust himself to whatever room he's in. when he's at the rally with the people with the pickup trucks with let's go brandon on the back, he's telling them what they want to hear.

going to teach them. but when he is with their billionaire pals, he tells them what they want to hear and it's much more likely that they're going to get when he's talking about because he gave them a billionaire tax cut before. that's what they want to hear. he needs to keep them happy because they are keeping his campaign afloat, giving the amount of money he is spending for legal fees. it's important for him to keep the money with -- the people of the deepest pockets happy. >> renee brings up a very good point. donald trump says one thing to the rallies with the pickup trucks and says another to the well-heeled high dollar campaign events like he did last night in palm beach. >> in the history of trumps great scams, but 2017 tax cut benefited about 190 people and

high-value institutions in the country. hedge funds, private equity people, et cetera. about 190 people got the majority of the benefit. there was a component to it that was a middle-class tax cut that expired two years later. and she's going to do the same thing again because he understands where his bread is buttered. he understands that the billionaire class in this country of republican donors care about tax cuts more than they care about life itself. they are not by the way wanting these tax cuts because they are some great free marketeers were they believe low taxes benefit the overall economy. it's straight up wanting to not pay taxes. that's one of the things that as an ex-republican it took a long time to realize. that whole free markets and has nothing to do with the disconnection of taxes and benefits to middle-class voters. it's a lie. >> on top of that, trump needs these well-heeled pals because he has a lot of legal bills. he will need money from somewhere. i'm going to switch gears. have you all listened to senator chris van hollen on

face the nation today? on president biden's ultimatum to prime minister netanyahu, and the very tense phone call on thursday? watch. >> the president and the white house have yet to lay out what consequences they have and want to impose and we have had a situation where for once, the president has made requests to the netanyahu government. they've ignored those requests and we have sent more 2000 pound bombs. we can pervert back to that. >> megan, do you think the president is going to be -- i've seen -- there is a lot of daylight now between the president and the prime minister . but he has not gone so far as to say okay, we're done. i'm putting on conditions. do you think the president will get there? >> i think he is signaling his getting a lot closer to that. the president says all he means and means all he says. that's the strongest statement we've seen thus far.

great franklin institute in philadelphia. director, thanks very much for coming to the show. walk us through exactly what will happen tomorrow afternoon. >> what's going to happen tomorrow afternoon is that the moon is going to slide directly between the earth and the sun. because of this interest in proportional relationship between size and distance, the men will cover the disk of the sun. the shadow of them and will fall on the earth and millions of people along the path of totality will cheer and sing and have great feelings about what they are seeing. >> explain why we should heed the warnings to not look directly at the sun. is it really that dangerous to do so? >> that's a really great question. any small piece of the sun is just as bright as the entire son. we already know not to look directly at the sun because the bright light of the sun will damage our eyesight.

tomorrow is a special case. if you are watching the eclipse during totality, the moon completely covers the disk of the sun. at that point it is safe to observe without the glasses. but you forget as you are watching this marvelous phenomena that the moon is still moving and a little piece of the sun peaks out in the bright light blasts your retina and that's not good. so you have to be careful about how you watch this. >> i have the glasses here. that's one way to watch the eclipse. what are other ways that we could see tomorrow's a clips without using the special glasses? >> there are a number of what i call indirect ways to observe and a clips. these ways are with you standing with your back to the sun. for example if you go into your kitchen and dig around, you will find the spaghetti strainer that we call a colander. each one of the holes in the colander is called a pinhole camera. if you hold the colander so it gets the sunlight and you look at the little dots of the light underneath on a shaded area, you will see images of the

eclipse. or if you have a piece of what is called pegboard masonite. you know the brown stuff that you see in stores with hooks that hold things? that stuff does the same thing because it is a pinhole camera. you can also make a pinhole projector using a piece of aluminum foil got onto a card with a little hole poked in it which will act as a pinhole camera, too. these are all great because you're standing with your back to the sun looking at it as a projected image. >> this is more than just a scientific phenomena. it's also become a cultural moment. why are people so fascinated by anna clips? >> well, eclipses are rare, they are unique and could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the other piece is that everyone loves to participate in some sort of activity of the universe. we as humans on this planet are connected to the night sky even though we are not all
