there to kill me. >> there are things people need to know and things that need to be said. >> what would you do for love? we will get to all of that. first, let's go back to where this story began. orange county, california. not too far from the coast, you will find the camden martinique apartments occupied mostly from students from nearby colleges. >> we had the polls. we had the hot tubs. it's where everyone wanted to be. >> she lived there with her husband and that's what they meant a twentysomething couple named dan wozniak and rachel buffett. violet's husband described them to her. >> wine drinkers as opposed to hard liquor. met them and the perfect. how could we go wrong? >> rachel and dan acted in community theater. that's how they met. on stage.

a few years later they connected. >> he had become my best friend and i was hanging out with them so often. >> so i said give me a chance? you thought what? >> i don't want to lose my best friend. >> were you in love? >> i realized, i am in love with this person. >> when he proposed, she said yes. they moved to camden martinique four months before their wedding date. wife -- life wasn't easy. >> throughout our relationship, money was somewhat of an issue. >> rachel picked up or kieran there. once, she said, as a princess at disneyland and dan work sometimes too but nothing steady. >> they seem to struggle financially alive. you kind of felt sorry for them because they seemed they were so excited to get married and

start their life together. >> and, at the apartments, they settled in. >> it got to the point where everybody was hanging out with each other like every night. >> part of that circle was 26- year-old sam. he fought in afghanistan and made it home to california. >> there were a couple things that sets him apart. he seemed more responsible. >> sam was intent on earning his college degree, and that's how we met julie kibuishi. julie helped sam with his schoolwork. >> she got after him if he was s not studying because his grade reflected her tutoring. she took it seriously. >> julie's mom. >> she told me about sam. is like a big teddy bear and always nice to everybody. we got together at his place a lot of times. >> julie who lived at home got to know everyone at the complex, and rachel connected ac

it's not my daughter. >> julie had been shot twice in the head. her pants were down and someone had written on her sweatshirt the word all yours. police found julie's phone in the apartment and saw those weird texts sam had sent her. they learned about his combat tour and how he some high had night terrors. when police searched his name in their database, they found something sam in friends already knew. >> he had done some jail time. >> in 2002 at 18, sam herr was charged in the murder of another teenager. he was acquitted for sam in dad knew in hindsight, it did not look good. that didn't buy you a lot of rhythm from law enforcement? >> no. i understood that. it was imperative to start looking immediately. >> he wanted to find is son to

prove he was innocent. the orange county prosecutor also wanted to find sam quickly for entirely different reasons. >> he has a dead woman in his apartment and he's missing. you factor in afghanistan and he was a trained killer. he's been accused of this before and this guy could be potentially dangerous. >> the detectives and the data hunted sam independently. but on parallel tracks. detective spoke with sam in neighbors. >> i saw sam that day and had a short conversation with sam. >> rachel and dan said he was with another man they did not know. a man in a black hat. it seemed a potential lead. meanwhile, steve them there were recent transactions on the bank account he and sam shared. the trio led to long beach where sam's atm card was used to order a pizza. cops staked out the delivery address. >> ready to hit it like someone

that's when the story took a turn. detectives discovered the sam in neighbor might somehow be wrapped up in the mystery. now, they were about to bring dan in for questioning or he would make a stunning admission and change the course of the entire investigation. once again, here is josh mankiewicz with final curtain. detectives on the hunt for their prime suspect sam herr traced his atm card to dan wozniak. they found him at his bachelor party. >> immediately, when he saw me. he turned pale. >> the detective hauled him to the stage and and charged him with accessory to julie's murder. dan seemed eager to come clean. he told police that sam confessed to him that while drunk and on drugs, sam asked julie for sex. >> he said no and he shot her

twice in the head. like, julie. julie is like a friend. >> then dan said sam threatened him and his wife to be. he agreed to help sam escape. according to dan, he offered him money and dan took it to help pay for his wedding. as to the anonymous man in the black cat? dan had a confession to make. >> he doesn't exist. >> detectives went to the camden apartments to tell rachel dan was in custody. >> what's going through my head is shock. it's probably a huge mistake. it will be dropped in time for the rehearsal dinner tomorrow night. >> detectives didn't fully believe the story so they brought rachel in to see him. she is on the side of the angels when you put her in that room thinking he'll get him to tell us everything. >> that was our goal.

>> dan told rachel the same story he told detectives. sam killed julie and then dan helped sam escape. >> there's nothing you can do at this point to make it better. >> absolutely. he can be truthful with us and truthful with you. >> then detective spoke with rachel alone. rachel told them she and dan received an eviction notice. dan had to borrow money to make the rent. she said dan had told her only recently that he borrowed the money from dangerous people. >> he told me people were going to break his legs. >> she said on the day dan was supposed to pay the light breakers $2200 or else, sam stopped by. >> he came down to the apartment because he was going to give dan a ride. >> she said dan and sam live together than dan came back alone, but, with money.

>> he had 400 somehow on friday. >> rachel said she could not believe that dan was mixed up and julie's murder. is that when you start to think to yourself, this guy i am about to marry is somebody i don't even know? >> i was still thinking i knew his heart. the crimes he was saying he did? at least that wind up with someone who would do anything to help somebody in need. >> did he tell you about this? did he tell you his involvement? >> hell no. >> detectives drove rachel back to the apartments. >> i go to my friends and knock on the door. at that point just start bawling. >> she is shaking violently and said dan has been arrested. she is a mess. >> rachel win her parents home

to tell them dan was in jail and the wedding was off. >> my mom, she has lost it. >> the day was to get more traumatic. at the police station, dan asked to speak with detectives again. this time, he said something that blew the case wide open. >> i went crazy and i did it. i killed julie and i killed sam. >> you didn't see that coming. >> no. >> dan wozniak confessed that he did not help sam herr but he killed him. dan said they drove to a theater where he performed and dan asked sam to help move something from the attic. >> he bent down and i grabbed a gun and shot him. >> so he fired again. >> he started bleeding. he wasn't moving. >> dan then drove to a
