now. >> who would've thought. it and i also think this is the first time we really can say, you know, with clarity, that a criminal indictment will be coming down the pipe for a former president of the united states. this is one of the days. mark it on your calendar. the tides of history seem to be turning. >> and if it happens, it might not be the only one. >> indeed not. >> thank you, alex. >> have a good night. >> thank you. well, the breaking news of the night, is that the manhattan district attorney could soon become the first prosecutor in american history to charge a former president with a crime. the new york -- was the first to break the news reporting. the prosecutors offered mr. trump the chance to testify next week before the grand jury that has been hearing evidence in the potential case, the people said. such offers almost always indicate an indictment is close. it would be unusual for the district attorney, alvin el al

bragg, to notify a potential defendant without ultimately seeking charges against him. in new york, potential defendants have the right to answer questions in the grand jury before they are indicted. but they rarely testify. the washington post is quoting a trump advisor tonight, saying everyone will advise him not to go in. of course. no one has to advise donald trump not to go in and testify under oath. this is something that he lives in fear of. the manhattan investigation is focused on the $130,000 that was paid to actress stephanie clifford, also known as stormy dawn years. during donald trump's first presidential campaign. that was a hush money payment to prevent stormy daniels from telling a story about the one evening she spent with donald trump in his hotel room or four months after his current wife gave birth to his last child.

the payment worked. temporarily, at least. it kept the story quiet trump d president. the payment to stormy daniels was arranged by donald trump' operative, michael cohen, who was convicted on federal charges in that case. michael cohen was sentenced to three years in federal prison after admitting under oath as prosecutors told the quote, quote, he acted in coordination with and at the direction of individual one. all of michael cohen's crimes in the stormy daniels case were committed in coordination with and at the direction of donald trump, who was individual one in those federal court filings. it remains a mystery why the same federal prosecutors did not go after donald trump for the same crimes after he left office. but it appears the man hatton district attorney is now doing that. michael cohen told the washington post tonight that he has met with the district attorney 19 times, and tomorrow

he will meet with the manhattan district attorney for the 20th time. michael cohen told the washington post that he has not yet been called to testify to the grand jury. so the manhattan district attorney is closing in on donald trump. district attorney fani willis in atlanta, georgia, is closing in on donald trump and his said charges are imminent. we already know that the georgia grand jury recommended that several people be indicted in a criminal investigation that involves donald trump. and special prosecutor jack smith is investigating donald trump for two separate sets of possible federal crimes. one involving donald trump's position of government documents after he left office, and the other involving donald trump's actions leading up to it on january 6th. so there are four separate criminal prosecutions that are closing in on donald trump. and you have to ask yourself,

what are the odds? what are the odds of donald trump escaping charges in all four of those criminal investigations? if donald trump is going to be criminally charged in any one of those investigations, it is going to be this year. 2023 is going to be the year in history when the first former president of the united states is charged with a crime. it will be the first time that that happens. or it's going to be the year when donald trump finally gets all of his criminal legal problems behind him. and of donald trump is charged with a crime, it might actually help house republicans, because it would take attention away from the way they are humiliating themselves in their own hearings just about every day now. the republican house of representatives did not present their budget for the federal government today because they don't have one. instead, they held clownish

hearings in which the republican members of the committees and their witnesses were humiliated repeatedly by the truth. but trump fanatic jim jordan, who has never met a subject he wasn't eager to lie about, held a hearing to find out what was going on at twitter before elon musk bought it. >> there's something going on between congressional republicans and elon musk. mister chairman, americans can see through this. musk is helping you out politically, and you're going out of your way to promote and protect him and to praise him for his work. this isn't just a matter of data was given to these so-called journalists before us now. there are many legitimate questions about where musk got the financing to buy twitter. we know for a fact that foreign countries like qatar, saudi arabia, and possibly even russia and china, our investors presently in twitter.

do these countries now have access to private twitter user data? what agreements has elon musk reached with them? >> jim jordan called -- as a witness. elon musk called on matt thai eby to analyze a very small selection of electronic communication within twitter and to then twitter his analysis of that narrowly selected batch of communication that was selected for matt taibe by elon musk. he did not have access and will never have access to most of electronic communication at twitter. there are millions of emails and text messages that matt i.e. has never seen and will never see. >> elon musk's balloon fed you his cherry-picked information which you must have six factored from its slanted viewpoint or at the very least

generates another right-wing conspiracy theory. you violated your own standard. and you appeared to have benefited from it. before the release of emails, of emails in the office of last, year you had 661,000 twitter followers. after the twitter files, your followers doubled, and now it's three times what it was last august. i imagine your substack readership, which is a subscription, increase ignorantly because of the work that you did for elon musk. i'm not asking you to put $1 figure on, it but it's obvious that you profited from the twitter files. you hit the jackpot on that vegas slot machine to which you referred. that's true, isn't it? >> i've also reinvested -- >> no, no, no. is it true that you have profited since you are the recipient of the twitter files? you have made money? yes or no? >> it's probably a watch, honestly. >> now, you have made money that you do not have before, correct? >> i have also spent money that i did not have before. i just hired a whole group of people to -- >> the obvious answer,

that we are talking about subpoena compliance under a chairman of the full committee who was absolutely out of subpoena compliance in the last congress. so we're gonna call witnesses in here today and claim that they did not comply with subpoenas or requests. and that request is so rich because it's coming from on himself did not comply with the january six request so. matt 31 the letter was sent to that representative jordan asking that he honor his subpoena. he was asked over and over again. your witness to a. crime the greatest crime ever committed with the most criminals ever indicted in america where you help your country, where you comply with your subpoena. no compliance. crickets. absolute defiance of the subpoena. and because that's, and is chairman was referred and still pending data house ethics committee. and why? well, it's because he took an

oath. and we'll have a congressional oath put up there. but the congressional oath mandates that members of congress defend the constitution without any mental reservation or, is it says on the slide, purpose of evasion. not responding to a congressional subpoena is a direct purpose of evasion. so this is our chairman, calling everyone here today, people in the department of justice, the department of education, who are doing the important work to claim they are out of compliance, when he himself is currently out of compliance. >> and in the house oversight committee hearing, kirsten in ocasio-cortez reported that republicans were having a hearing about a word that they could not define. i think you can guess what that word is. >> we have about, what is it, seven, eight hearings just in this committee and subcommittee

this week. which is a very high number. i have no qualms with this committee working hard. i have no qualms with this committee. doing everything it can. but i think we have our conversation about priorities here. we are having a hearing right now, and it's about what? that the federal government is to oak? that's seriously what we're hearing? and there's no definition of what woke is? but on paper, what is being criticized in this hearing is that the so-called woke policies are remote work for federal workers, especially those who work in rural areas. and those who have disabilities. paying interns so that critical opportunities don't just go to

[laughter] >> when we saw what they tried to do with this twitter testimony today, it just could not have been more ludicrous. there are literally millions upon millions of electronic human occasions never examined by anybody in that room and never will be, and a couple of witnesses in the room were pretending that they actually know something about how twitter used to work, because elon musk handed them some emails from the period before elon musk bought twitter. that's what they were accepting as useful evidence.

sure. as you heard from the witnesses, when we asked them, how many emails did they have access to? they said, about 100,000. as you said, lawrence, there are millions of emails. that have gone on on twitter. hundreds of millions. the twitter files contained 338 emails. that is what the american people are supposed to take and make an assessment about what is the mind frame, what is twitter about? it's outrageous. it's absolutely outrageous. >> congressman gomez, over the oversight committee, where you are, i have a feeling you're going to be, the republicans on that committee, are going to be trying to define that word that they just learned, for a very long time. >> they are. the reason why, for them, it's not really about the different definition. it's about creating a political tool they can use to gain votes in the 2024 elections. that's what it's about.

whatever they can fit into woke, as a gender affirming care, is a remote work? whatever it is, they're going to try to fit it into that box. then they use their hate and their division to target disenfranchised communities, like the transgender community. that was another attack that you didn't play, that was an attack that was a constant mode in the oversight committee. attacking the transgender community, one of the most marginalized, one of the most discriminated groups in the country. high rates of suicide, unemployment, homelessness. yet, they want to focus on that, and not how did they make life better for the american people. >> stacey plaskett, do you know what's coming in the agenda for this committee? >> unfortunately, we don't. i have said a number of letters to the chairman, to jim jordan, staff has reached out to say, are there areas that we could investigate together?

are there areas we can find some agreement on that maybe we do need to fit within the confines of the federal government overreach into american lives? we have given them a list of ones, let's talk about bill barr. how he tried to weaponize the department of justice during the last presidential election. let's talk about the irs, and its propensity to audit working class, african american families. they don't want to have that discussion. then, on top of it, as you saw from the hearing, they don't want to give us information and evidence that they have. we're still waiting to see the hundreds of whistleblowers that they said i have. the three that we have found or not, in fact, whistleblowers. do not have any credible evidence. so, we are always in the waiting game to see what is the latest idea, what rabbit hole have they gone down into that i think we're going to go and crawl in with them. and try to come back as dirty as they are and still tell the

truth to the american people. there's so much work to do, as you said, lawrence, and jimmy and i are trying to get that done for our constituents, and for everyone in taxpayers dollars are absolutely being wasted with this foolishness that they have us doing. >> congressman gomez, what should your committee, the house oversight committee, be doing? what should that committee be working on? >> there is a variety of issues that we should be working on, we should be working on the train derailment, having oversight, what happened in east palestine. how can we take steps so that that doesn't happen again. at the same time, there are bigger issues that the american people are facing. i'm a new dead, one of the issues i care about is affordable childcare. the expanded child tax credit -- they don't want to discuss. that what they wanted to discuss, the red meat for their base. it is a waste of taxpayer dollars, we want to make sure that we've start focusing on that. when you have no ideas, and no

and she made clear that she had knowingly, at the very, least knowingly misrepresented facts to the american people. >> what else is happening to other lawyers who engaged in this kind of conduct for trump? >> we have seen rudy giuliani is close to losing his law license in new york, and d.c. is about to suspend him as well, most likely disbar him. we have seen other lawyers have state supreme courts or the state bar move against them. john eastman in california. and this is defy project, which without which i lead, has filed 76 marketplace across the country against other lawyers. this is a slow process. we filed our complaint against jenna ellis over a year ago, just about a year ago. and so it's a slow process, but we are expecting other lawyers who participated in the effort also to face public disbarment. >> michael teter, thank you very much for joining us tonight. coming up, what do billionaires

very long time, their priority is protecting the very rich. it was then and it still is. >> as you go forward, when do you expect, is there any indication on the budget committee when the republicans will present the budget to that committee? >> you know, at first they said it would be, we should be prepared for markup in march. then they were saying april. and now i'm hearing may. but look, i wouldn't hold my breath. it took this crew 15 rounds and four days just to vote for their own guy for speaker. so how exactly they're going to get 218 votes for anything substantive on a budget, i think that remains to be seen. >> meanwhile the clock is ticking on the need to increase the debt ceiling, probably, in the june, july area. what do you expect can possibly happen there, when there are so

many republicans now in the house of representatives who clearly don't understand what the debt ceiling is? >> it's quite disturbing. i think we had this conversation before. how many of my republican colleagues a right confused default, which we've never experienced as a country, with a government shutdown. they are two very different things, as you know. but too many of my republican colleague colleagues do not. we will find out shortly after april 15th if we are looking at a deadline of june or july or closer to september. but whenever it is, it is very clear, the only way this ends is kevin mccarthy has to put the bill on the floor to allow a clean increase in the debt ceiling. period. we have done it more than 60 times since 1960. we did it three times with donald trump was president. and we're gonna do it again this time. >> if he does that, the democrats, combined with a handful, is all it would take, of reasonable republicans on this issue, it could pass that and get it done.
