3:02 pm
that's 1.25 billion people. there are secret weapons and the ones that are heading the call for change. it is now up to us to meet the needs and aspirations. i want to show you the excitement that india has for global citizen festival to come to mumbai. let's have a look, shall we? ♪ this morning we're pleased to announce we launched the global citizens india platform. this is a journey to end extreme poverty on our planet by 2030 and we want india to be a leader

in putting its voice behind that change. >> i make a pledge. >> nothing would make me happier to be a part of a movement that supports gender equality. >> 50% of the strength of a nation should be women. they need their dignity, their presence and their honor in our society. >> as artists my duty is is not only to perform but also to speak on behalf of global issues. >> so it's all about india, its rural and cities of india. different languages, everyone. and music is a language which everybody understands. >> and we're back. ladies and gentlemen, come on now, chris martin!

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. and it is my great, great pleasure to introduce a woman who has just flown from an endia city, she's ensuring proper sanitation. i want to give her an extra hug because i feel like i miss home. like i said, chris martin! he's the lead singer of cold play. i don't need to introduce him. welcome to new york both of you. i can't wait to see what you have planned for my city. >> thank you, priyanka. we are so proud of you, we are so proud. india is proud of you, we are proud of you. namaste, new york. thank you so much, new york.

on behalf of the prime minister we are thrilled to invite global citizens and all of you to india to join us in our tireless efforts to fight for gender equality, sanitation, water and quality education for all. india will lead the global effort to sustain the sustainable goals. over 800 million young, aspirational indians are determined to lead the fight against extreme poverty. m mumbai, just like the heart of new york is the heart of city and soul, it is the home of b l bollywood and cricket. we are thrilled to welcome all of you and we are especially excited to welcome mr. chris

3:09 pm
your phone feels like luxury when a clean toilet seems a given. but did you know that 40,000 times the people in this park tonight do not have access to clean toilets and that an even larger number doesn't have access to clean drinking water. that's why it is an important question. it is important that more people have access to mobile phones than to clean toilets and drinking water. i think that is ridiculous. >> and the water and sanitation crisis is big so what's being done to fix it? >> enormous. we in the netherlands decided to do something about it. last year in washington we made a double promise. in 2030 50 million will have access to clean toilets and 30 million will have clean drinking water. today, no, we double on that commitment and i'm proud to announce another $300 million. we hope that others will follow
3:10 pm
suit so that in 2030 across the globe clean water and sanitation will no longer be a luxury. all of you today, all citizens, everyone to reach that goal because if you have this phone or a clean bathroom, it's better to have both and i'm sure make sure that you don't have this phone falling in your clean toilet. >> doubling your commitment to $100 million. thank you for your commitment to what we're doing here. >> thank you very much. wonderful to be here. >> stick around for a while. stay for rihanna. >> thank you very much. >> great to see you. >> nice. $100 million commitment for toilets. ah [ expletive ].
