hollywood, and much more, "first look" starts right now. good morning, everybody thanks for being with us. i'm shannon mulaire. it was billed as a slugfest. the first debate is in the books. nbc's steve handelsman was there for the fireworks. >> reporter: five democrats debated but the focus was on front-runner hillary clinton and on bernie sanders, who's run first in early primary states and calls himself a socialist. >> we're going to win because first we're going to explain what democratic socialism is. i believe in a society where all people do well. not just the handful of billionaires. >> reporter: hillary clinton. does she have that view? consistently. >> do you change your political identity based on who you're talking to? >> no. i think that, like most people that i know, i have a range of views, but they are rooted in my values and my experience. >> reporter: issue number two was guns. >> is bernie sanders tough enough on guns? >> no. not at all.

from a republican candidates during the debate mike huckabee tweeted i trust bernie sanders with my tax dollars like a trust a north korean chef with my labrador. huckabee isn't a top five republican candidate, according to a new fox news poll. donald trump still leads, but ben carson is just a point behind. but here's what carson doesn't have. an "snl" hosting gig. nbc announcing trump will host "saturday night live" on november 7th. he last hosted in april of 2004. developing this morning, former nba player and reality tv star lamar odom was found unconscious in a nevada brothel on tuesday. the owner of the love ranch brothel told nbc news odom checked in on saturday and was last seen by ranch personnel at 6:00 a.m. tuesday morning. when the staff checked on him around 3:30 p.m. local time he was unconscious. they called 911, and were instructed to turn him over on his left side when liquid was coming from his mouth. according to hoff, odom had been

taking herbal viagra and partying. though he stressed no illegal drugs were found in odom's room. he was treated at nearby desert view hospital before being transported to sunrise hospital in las vegas. odom's ex-wife khloe kardashian was reportedly rushing to be with him last night. a source tells e-news kardashian had cut off contact over the summer but still worried about odom. we'll bring you the latest as the story develops. it is a lawsuit that's been closely watched by gun control and gun rights advocates. a milwaukee jury has found a local gun shop is, in fact, liable for the shooting of two police officers. nbc's dan schenamen has the details. >> the negligence suit was filed by two police officers shot and seriously wounded by a young man they stopped riding a bike on a milwaukee sidewalk. the gunman used a weapon purchased at badger guns. according to the suit, the weapon was sold to a straw buyer, or a customer buying a gun for someone who couldn't legally do so. >> i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: the jury sided with the officers.

>> was such sale by badger guns to jacob collins negligence? the jury answered this question, yes. >> reporter: jurors ordered the gun store to pay the officers nearly $6 million. surveillance video from the shop shows jacob collins purchasing the gun for someone too young to do so. lawyers for the officers said conflicting information on the purchase documents should have been a warning sign for the sales staff. the defense argued there was no way for the owner to know it was a straw purchase. >> the act of straw purchasing is fundamentally deception. >> reporter: the defense did not comment after the verdict was read. and the attorney for the officers expects appeals to go on for years. dan schenamen, nbc news. planned parenthood announced it will no longer accept reimbursement for costs of providing fetal tissue for medical research. this comes after recent attempts by congressional republicans to pull the organization's federal funding over edited recordings made by an anti-abortion group, purporting to show alleged misconduct. planned parenthood denies any

wrongdoing and challenges the edits. the center for medical progress, which made the videos, called the announcement an admission of guilt. but planned parenthood president cecile richards said in a letter the goal of these extremists has nothing to do with fetal tissue donation but is instead to wan abortion today. we're taking their smokescreen away. and now to something that has never, ever happened in the history of chicago's wrigley field. >> he got him! a strikeout! the cubs win! the chicago cubs rl heading to the national league championship series! >> for the first time since wrigley opened in 1914 the cubs have clinched their first series at home. chicago fans were beyond euphoric as the cursed cubbies beat the team with the best record in baseball to take the division series 3-1. fans there poured into the streets celebrating what might be the next step in the team's

welcome back to "first look." i like these days. what's really difficult to find somewhere with horrible weather in our country. one of the quiet ohs, most beautiful fall days. only exception down here in the

keys. some showers and thunderstorms. it's really not going to be all that bad. much of the nation is beautiful. not even that cold this morning. and this afternoon we go up to 69 in new york. 74 in st. louis. where it's actually hot in areas from texas still to the west coast. i mean this has been an unusually warm october. and that trend is going to continue. even into thursday. a repeat of today. if you like beautiful, fall weather, these are the days for you. >> not a lot to complain about. bill, thank you. a tragic scene in south florida. at least one woman was killed when a small plane crashed into a trailer park yesterday. one trailer was completely engulfed in flames while another was also damaged. the sun sentinel reports three bodies were pulled from the wreckage although that has not been confirmed by nbc news. the faa is now investigating. in connecticut, a jury ruled against the aunt who sued her own nephew for $127,000 over a hug gone wrong. jennifer connell claimed her 8-year-old nephew was negligent when he knocked her down and wroek her wrist while giving her a hug at his birthday party four

years ago. the 54-year-old told the judge that, quote, i was at a party recently and it was difficult to hold my hors d'oeuvres plate. it took the jury only 20 minutes to unanimously decide that connell's now 12-year-old nephew whose mother died last year owes her nothing. the gender pay gap is in the spotlight this morning after a scathing essay by one of the biggest stars in hollywood. in it, jennifer lawrence opens up about her reaction when she learned her male co-stars were being paid a lot more than she was. we got more new from nbc's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: jennifer lawrence may be the highest paid woman in hollywood, but that's not the point. the point, she writes, in a letter posted online, is that the men are making more. when the sony hack happened and i found out how much less i was being paid than the lucky people with a certain male body part, i didn't get mad at sony, got mad at myself. an internal sony e-mail made

it's the only one cats ask for by name. all right. time now for your wednesday edition of "scrambled politics." the republican national committee was downright vicious following last night's debate. they issued a statement which said in part, judging from tonight, it's clear why the democrat national committee limited the number of debates. their bench of candidates for the most powerful office in the world is laughable, at best. clinton needed to shine and she came up short. whatever the case, bernie sanders' campaign says they earned $1.3 million in the four hours after the debate began. at one point, there was onstage friction between sanders and martin o'malley on gun control. >> we were able to pass this and still respect the hunting traditions of people who live in our rural areas. and we did it by leading with principle. not by pandering to the nra. and backing down to the nra. >> -- voting record, i don't

think i am pandering but you have not been in the united states congress. >> well, maybe that's a healthy thing. >> -- check it out. >> martin o'malley talked to msnbc's chris matthews about that exchange after the debate was over. >> we are the only nation on the planet that buries as many of our people from gun violence as we do every year. and this -- this sickness has to be addressed. and there's comprehensive, commonsense things we can do. and i was hoping that on the stand tonight, maybe we did. i think we can forge a new consensus to get it done. >> as for hillary clinton, twitter exploded at her misuse of the word literally. >> when we met in copenhagen in 2009, and literally president obama and i were hunting for the chinese. going throughout this huge convention center, because we knew we had to get them to agree to something. >> as the daily show points out, literally hunting for the chinese is kind of an odd way to phrase it.

and it's become a tradition, the pros and cons of watching the debate, brought to you by tonight show host jimmy fallen. >> pro hillary clinton had to answer tough questions like did you lie about your e-mail service. con, jim webb had to answer tough questions like, who are you? and can we see some i.d.? pro, hearing bernie sanders supporters chant, feel the burn. con, hearing lincoln chafee supporters chant hear the chafe. martin o'malley wants to see more debates added to the schedule. con, leave it to the irs guy to order another round. >> and that is your morning dish of "scrambled politics." all right, let's bring in jonathan allen chief political correspondent for vox which has a partnership with nbc universal. who was the big winner last night? >> well, we're the winner because we get to talk about it. but i thought hillary clinton was really the big winner last night. bernie sanders is closer to democrats on policy, but a lot of them are worried that he

can't win the general election. i think what democrats saw last night from hillary clinton was somebody who is a lot more confident, and competent, and capable on stage in this debate than she has looked in a lot of her one-on-one interviews. >> if anybody was concerned about clinton, particularly when it comes to credibility, are they at east now after last night? >> absolutely. i think that -- i think when you looked at that stage of five democrats there, there was one who really looked like they were having command performance. bernie sanders is a little uncomfortable in territory outside his standard stump speech. a little uncomfortable in some of those exchanges on guns and other places. clinton was smooth and steady, even if there were places that she doesn't necessarily agree with the democratic party's base. >> it was a huge moment though for sanders when he said, and i quote, the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails. did he make a mistake, though, by not getting her on those e-mails? that was a big topic leading up to this. >> i can tell you that in my conversations with the general impression from that was, was that bernie sanders, number one,

was going to get a lot of credit from democrats for being a good guy in that moment, and at the same time, that he did miss an opportunity, and that perhaps that was an indication that he doesn't want to rough up hillary clinton too much if he thinks she may eventually be the democratic nominee. >> all right. well you say clinton but the rnc says bernie won. do you think they're trying to reflect here or they truly believe that sanders was the best one last night? >> i don't think you can necessarily take a party committee's rating of a debate. or take the other side particularly seriously in terms of whether or not that's the person who won. i think the republican national committee would like bernie sanders to have won. they would like bernie sanders to take out hillary clinton in a primary contest, as well. >> he did get a lot of interest on the web last night. google searches on him, and we have a cool graphic. they peaked during his intro and were higher throughout than the other candidates. he's there in the red, hillary clinton in the blue and the others much lower. what does this graph tell you? >> the internet loves bernie sanders.

"today" pastors fail to meet with kentucky governor about clerk kim davis. the pastors want the governor to call a special legislative session so lawmakers can enact accommodations for county clerks like kim davis who refuse to provide marriage licenses for same-sex couples. and in the san francisco examiner, golden gate bridge district taking bids for suicide net project. the iconic bridge is getting a $76 million safety net of steel wires that would act as a suicide barrier. 1600 people have jumped to their deaths since the bridge opened in 1937. 38 of them in 2014 alone. officials hope the net will be in place by 2019. the proposed martin luther king jr. monument on top of georgia's stone mountain is already facing backlash. a local confederate groups have found a surprising ally. naacp and the sclc announced their opposition to the plan believing king's image should not be associated with the confederacy. the group's leaders have a scheduled meeting with the governor later today.
