♪ >> happening right now at 11:00 o'clock, lightning strikes, thousands of them, light up the night sky throughout our area, as strong storms sweep through. one of those bolts is to blame for this. a fire that quickly burned a house at the ground in montgomery township. >> the sites and sounds tonight into broomall delaware county ominous clouds and big booms of

thunder. on top of all of that, breaking news. the search has just been suspended for a man who disappeared after a sailboat capsized on the delaware river. crews have been searching the water throughout the night. we'll have a report from the scene in just a few moments but first, more on this severe weather. jessica. >> serious storms still making that are way through the area right now. i'm here in the weather center with meteorologist kate bilo to take a look at those storms and what comes next. >> we had a lot of storms out there all evening and almost another round has developed. take look at storm scan3. atmosphere across our region very very unsettled very unstable tropical moisture in place and storms love to form in this kind of an environment that's why even though we had round of strong storms earlier tonight yet another round is developing now over philadelphia and right back into portions of northern delaware, back toward d.c. and these storms will continue to move through even during the overnight hours. even without the sun it's still hot and steamy enough for these storms to really start to breed. you can see lot of lightning

with this next cell this just moved over the city of philadelphia. now it has pushed further to the east. it's over portions of burlington county at the moment. you can see this is an area that got hit hard by storms earlier tonight getting hit again now. frequent lightning and very heavy rain around cinnaminson willingboro 325 strikes just in

the homeowner and their dog got out safely. in the meantime the fire marshal is here on scene. to make a final determination as to what exactly caused this fire. reporting in montgomery township, todd quinones cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> now to another lightning strike this one in schuylkill township chester county. flames shot from the roof of this home as firefighters extended ladder that is reach the top. the home took heavy damage about $100,000 worth we're told. firefighter was also treated for heat exhaustion, but no one else was injured. >> the other concern tonight in berks county is flash flooding. this is video from wyomissing. cars were stuck in the water on state hill road in spring street tonight. crews had to bring in a flatbed to help out. them they used a front end loader to push that standing water off the roadway. on a night like this, we need your help to tell the story. you can send us your weather pictures and videos on twitter. just use the hash tag cbs-3

"eyewitness news" reporter elizabeth hur has the lat test from the scene in holmesburg. >> reporter: just about half hour ago, the search was called off and as far as what went wrong, police tell us that at this point this is what they know. the 66 year old was out on the water with four others watching a race when the storms hit. and the boat capsized search crews from philadelphia, new jersey state police and the coast guard waste no time using boats a chopper and underwater tracking devices to try and locate a 66 year old man who police say has not been seen since 8:00 tonight.

we're told he was one of five people on board a 24-foot sailboat when the storm moved in police say they dropped their sales and used a motor to head back to the delaware river yacht club to no avail. >> it filled with water and according to the individual that is were on the boat it sung um immediately. four of the five were able to swim to safety. >> four made it to the banks of the river police say behind the philadelphia fire academy. they called 911 and told authorities the last time they saw the 66 year old he was using a cooler to stay afloat. >> the only thing we found is that cooler that the 66 year old male was last seen using as a flotation device. >> reporter: at this time police say they do not suspect foul play or that alcohol played a factor. we are told the search will resume first thing in the morning. reporting from northeast philadelphia, i'm elizabeth hur cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> new at 11:00 a volunteer

youth hockey coach cued of sexually abusing a 16 year old girl. police say 42 year old michael dougherty of levittown bucks county abused that girl at the lincoln motel. he used his cell phone to record it. court documents reveal the two met online using an app called whisper. dock consider tee has been dismissed from the grundy senators youth hockey team. he had no mon of contact with minors through that job. >> a three year old boy run over and rush to the hospital on pine forest road in pine forge berks county. his father had to pull son out from underneath that car that hit him. the little boy suffered massive head trauma. the driver did stop to help but because of the heat, and the emotion at the scene, both the driver and the boy's father collapsed. they were also taken at the hospital. >> we're learning new details tonight about that big food truck blast that was caught on tape in feltonville. the explosion is raising questions about the safety of these very poplar street side eateries. natasha brown has the story of a

survivor who says he's lucky to be alive. >> all this is burned up. my ear. >> reporter: angel, wears the scars physically and mentally after being enveloped in a massive fire ball. >> i was standing right in this staircase, and that's the explosion and with the explosion the fire got to me. and my back and my ear. >> reporter: he was one of 13 victims injured when a food truck exploded tuesday evening at third and wyoming. sending a sweeping ball of fire across the entire street. >> it was a big boom. and i don't wish that on nobody. it was terrible. terrible hearing everybody scream. i was screaming myself because the pain. >> reporter: police say the 100-pound propane tank that caused the ground shaking fiery blast was one of two on the truck. police say the tank not in use had a leak igniting the grill and side the truck. the owner of the truck 42 year old olga, her 17 year old daughter jaelin and two other relatives working in the truck

were among the injured. septa officers nearby rushed to help the wounded. >> i never seen like it in my life. the truck was still on fire. there was people using fire extinguishers on several fires. >> reporter: investigators say the truck was properly licensed, but "eyewitness news" found that outside of periodic health inspections dealing with food safety, there is no department inspecting for in that food related issues. while the investigation continues, victims continue to relive a moment forever etched in their memory. >> it could have been worse. i thank god i'm here. >> reporter: five people including the truck owner and her daughter remain in critical condition here at temple university's burn center. meantime this is now become a joint investigation involving several entities including the atf, philadelphia police and the fire marshal's office. at temple university hospital, natasha brown cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> take look at these torched

tour buses flames damaged two buses belonging to the band styx and foreign are in. chopper three over second and callowhill in philadelphia this afternoon. we're told the flames started in the back of the bus then quickly spread to a neighboring bus. police say no one was injured. the show will go on. the bands will still play tomorrow night at the susquehanna bank center in camden. >> just two days before the fourth of july, vandals in doylestown are desecrating american flags. the flags attached to parking meters but recently about a dozen were torn down. there are no surveillance cameras in that part of oakland avenue so authorities are now asking residents to keep an eye out. >> we are continuing to track tropical storm arthur. this is what he looks like from the international space station. what will it mean for our holiday weekend? kate. >> we'll have direct and inn direct impacts from tropical storm arthur. it will be hurricane by the time it passes by the jersey shore. i'll tell you the impacts on the shore, on the city and we'll talk about the storms that are still rumbling through at this hour coming up in weather.

33% of voters feel that way. according to the latest quinnipiac university poll. just 8% consider president obama the best. former president george w. bush follows with 28% and richard nick son in third with 13%. the flyers captain claude jr. row spent last night in the hospital -- in jail, rather. according to reports. according to the ottawa sun giroux was arrested in that city for repeatedly grabbing the rear end of a police officer. the paper reports that this happened outside of a bar, and they say it's believed alcohol may have played a factor in that. giroux lives in ottawa in the off season. he is not expected to face criminal charges. >> the general manager of the flyers ron hextall released this statement today. it said simply we're aware of reports surrounding claude giroux, until we have more information we will with hold making 93 further comment. >> american airlines and u.s.

airways combined to become the largest airline in the world. but as the two combine forces passengers could be paying more than they should be. cbs-3 consume mr. reporter jim donovan is on your side to show you why and how to avoid it. >> reporter: the marriage of american and us airways was announced on valentine's day 2013. but a year and a half after that announcement, and six months after the government gave final approval for the merger, the planes have yet to be repainted, the terminal signs have yet to be changed, and the american and u.s. airways reservation systems are still operating separately. so when it comes to the airfare you pay -- >> huge differences sometimes. >> reporter: george is the founder of airfare watch dog.c dog.com. >> not just 10 or $20 much the could be 100, 200 or $300. >> reporter: for the same round trip ticket from philadelphia to dallas same flights booked at the exact same time the american airline website quoted 599. u.s. 664 a $65 difference and

that's not an isolated case many for round trip from philadelphia to la u.s. airways fair was 538. american's fair was 708. a $170 difference for the exact same flight. on last minute round trip from philadelphia to vegas we found a u.s. airways fair of seven frick much the same exact trip on american's site was $1,045. $299 more. >> it should be the same price. >> i am surprised. why is that? >> it's always difficult to merge two computer systems and they want to do it carefully. >> american expects to have the reservation sites fully merged by the end of 2015. so for now, the two sites are coach sharing. they have access to a limited number of seats on each other's flights and they price them independently. but there's no way to predict which sight will give you the cheaper fair. >> exactly the same flight, exactly the time times.

comes and goes. arthur staying out to sea. not going to be a direct hit on us but producing enough problems related to arthur that our weather will be pretty nasty at least for the next 36 to 48 hours or so. let's take look outside. i do want to show i was time lapse video from the leadership academy in philadelphia. notice how nice it was this afternoon. i'll put the time lapse into play. blue skies then all of a sudden the dark clouds role inform the city disappears under heavy rain as those strong storms rolled through in the evening and another storm moving through the area at the moment. the air has cooled down little before the thanks to the rain. it's 74 degrees right now. quick look at corm scan three. the storms firing up the secondary line has developed run more in burlington county down through portions of northern delaware as well. take quick look at these. still a lot of lightning. lightning has really been the big story tonight over 10,000 lightning strikes reported across the area cloud to ground strikes you can see heavy rain and lightning up across burlington county at the mommy. we'll zoom in on this area brand new flash flood warning has been

issued for this area as well as another round of heavy rain is impacting the same areas that got hit earlier. another storm popped up in atlantic county. 23 strikes in the past five minutes or so but you can see egg harbor township about to get hit with rain and lightning an few more cells. salem county back into portions of new castle county, delaware. this photo from eyewitness cam viewer susan sent this in by twitter. before the skies opened up over philadelphia amazing. you may have seen the yellow and orange hugh to the sky out there tonight. that's because of the sunset angle. the setting sun refracting through those storm clouds. really length these sky an erie hugh in some spots tonight. 77 degrees at the airport right now. 79 in millville and in wilmington. still 84 degrees in dover. they're that new flash flood warning we told you about around burlington, lumberton and back toward moorestown as well. right into the overnight hours. another flash flood watch goes into effect tomorrow morning it will continue through friday morning. an indication that any storm we see tomorrow will be locally heavy. again, showers and strong

thunderstorm mainly tomorrow afternoon and evening. one to 3-inches in any storm with locally higher amounts le leading to poor drainage flooding watching those streams and creeks much the air is tropical like ringing out a sponge lot of moisture to work with. and a lot of heavy rain these storms are slow movers as well. slow movers do in part to this guy. tropical storm arthur still a tropical storm as of the latest update. the pressure is dropping down to 988 millibars. winds steady sin the 5:00 p.m. update sustained winds at 70 miles an hour. here's the track should become hurricane overnight tonight by tomorrow morning. you can see it will make a close path perhaps landfall in the barrier islands of the outerbanks. by late thursday into early friday, and then pass offshore for us as we head into friday afternoon and friday evening. the heaviest rain will actually come from a slow moving front that can't push through because of arthur. one to 2-inches with that tomorrow. then some heavier rain in pocks arthur moves up the coast. so again impacts from arthur, that flash flood watch partially due to that the storm gusty wind

♪ >> talk about snail mail. a maine woman finally receives a letter that was mailed 83 years ago and a inform inform mcmichael received that letter it was pe inform inform ed in 1931 and sent to her grandmother from her aunt. both women have since died. the lost letter turned up in nearby town and the post office was finally able to track down a surviving family member. in fact, the post master took note of that letter because of the 2-cent stamp. ironically the letter did contain an apology for not writing sooner. we'll be right back. ♪
