fighters fight a brush fire on yerba buena island next to the bay bridge, both by land and by sea. the location, terrain and winds all made it challenging for crews to get the upper hand. >> the hydrants are on the north side of the bridge. the fire was on the south side, and there's only one way to get our hoses across and unfortunately we had to inconvenience everyone to stop this fire where we did. >> at one point, the eastbound portion of the bridge was completely shut down for more than an hour, backing up traffic for miles. good evening. on this saturday, i'm cristina rendon. firefighters were called to yerba buena island after drivers on the bay bridge reported smoke at about 230 this afternoon. the brush fire broke out on the island just south of the bridge. crews working using fireboats in their work against the flames,

and the fire department says crews on the ground had to break through a fence to access fire hydrants on the north side of the bridge and run a hose across interstate 80. that's why all eastbound lanes were shut down. firefighters also say the wind and steep terrain made the fire fight a challenge. >> our biggest delay was accessing the fire. this is in a very steep area, the anchorage of the bay bridge. if you've ever driven by or you've ever been on a boat, or even been at the embarcadero and looked over at yerba buena island, it is very steep and treacherous and difficult to get to. our firefighters then had to cut through a fence, direct access off of the 80 freeway. there's always cars zipping by, so there's always a safety element, but we take that into account to be able to stop these fires when we can. crews put out the fire before it damaged any nearby structures. >> it was contained at about 5:00, and the eastbound direction of the bridge then reopened, and crews did remain on scene, though to make sure the fire was fully extinguished. a man is in custody tonight accused of firing off his gun at a park in san leandro.olice

say they responded to a shooting at siempre verdes park tonight. officers say the suspect dropped higun and ran off when they arrived. police chased him down before taking him into custody. officers found the gun and several shell casings in the park. they say nobody was hurt. six people, though, hurt after a crash involving three cars on highway four in antioch. this video here from caltrans shows quite the backup this afternoon, not far from where the crash happened, near summersville road in the westbound lanes of highway four. the chp says six ambulances were called to the scene to treat patients. all of the injuries are described as minor. also at antioch, police victim from this week and are looking for any lds. lice were called to a report of a man on the side of the road, in ed of a medical attention on country hills drive and lone tree way on wednesday mng the man was pronounced dead at the scene. he has since been identified as 48 year old raheem e.nvestigators have not publicly identified a suspect, but anyone with information is

asked to contact antioch police. work is underway on two major highway resurfacing projects this weekend. caltrans shared these pictures of work being done on southbound interstate 680 between san ramon and pleasanton. three lanes are shut down until 4 a.m. monday morning . that leaves two lanes that have remained open, but caltrans is encouraging drivers to take other routes around the construction zone. more work is scheduled to continue the first weekend of june in the north bay. eastbound lanes of highway 37 between sonoma and solano counties is closed. this weekend. caltrans shared this video of the resurfacing underway this afternoon. this detour involves cars turning off on highway 121 at sears point, up highway 12, and down highway 29 into vallejo. this is the final full weekend closure of highway 37. the road is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on monday. well, it is a long time san francisco tradition that splits the city in half bay to breakers is happening tomorrow morning,

and it is a race unlike any other final preparations are underway tonight. ktvu joey jorda joining us now with the finish line with a preview of all the fun. joey >> it should be a lot of fun here. christina. come tomorrow. but even if you're not taking part in the race, you may encounter some road closures. they're already in effect here tonight in ocean beach ahead of the big race, which is expected to draw in thousands of people. bay to breakers is back. runners will pound the pavement on sunday from the embarcadero to ocean beach, splitting san francisco in half. build is a 12 k fun run. organizers say it's more about the journey than the finish line. >> definitely a bucket list item for folks around the world. >> as a legend goes, the race started back in 1912 as a way to bring the community back together after the great earthquake of 1906 devastated the city. >> as san francisco evolves, there's always things that make bay to breakers relevant. >> christian komnenic is in his second year as an organizer,

watching attendance numbers climb. they're expecting 20,000 participants this time around, about 3000 more than last year. as post pandemic numbers continue to climb. >> i think there's a lot of runners out there, but there's also a lot of people that like to enjoy a party, a festival athletes are dashing in from all 50 states and 20 different countries, with many picking up a race bib displaying their runner number on saturday as they make their way through the city, neighbors will line the route there to cheer them on. >> take your time, enjoy the sights. it's, you know, one of the most beautiful routes that i think exists for races in san francisco. >> and what would this uniquely san francisco tradition be without those silly costumes beyond the runners and the people like to party. >> some people like to dress up. so there's a little something for everyone at this event. >> come sunday morning, they'll run, jog, or dance to the finish line. all right, so the race starts near the embarcadero, goes through golden gate park and ends up here at ocean beach.

it all kicks off at 8 a.m, and police are telling us that these road closures in some areas will be continuing until 5 p.m. on sunday. christina >> always decide to see what people come up with in those costumes. joey horta live in the city tonight. joey. thank you. well, here is a map from organizers of the full route of the race. you can see the race starts at main street. it goes down. howard. all the way to ninth, and then it goes into hayes valley, crosses over on hayes street, on over to fell, and then right into golden gate park all the way, finishing near mlk and the great highway at ocean beach. the sfmta says some of those streets are going to be closed until 5:00 tomorrow morning. extra trains will run on the n judah line, and other bus routes will be split into two or rerouted around the course. be sure to stay with ktvu for full coverage of the race tomorrow. we'll have live coverage on mornings on two on ktvu and streaming on our fox local app will also have a live stream of the race all day long

was greeted by georgia senator raphael warnock. he told supporters not to take the polls too seriously. instead, he says he looks at what the results of the primaries have suggested about support for trump from republicans. >> when i look at his actual election results and the election results are in the primaries, look at the primaries. well, mr. trump has he doesn't have an opponent, but he lost 120,000 votes in pennsylvania, didn't vote for him. they voted for a woman who's no longer in the race. >> tomorrow, mr. biden is set to deliver the commencement address at morehouse college, a historically black college and the alma mater of civil rights leader doctor martin luther king junior. after the graduation, the president is scheduled to leave for a campaign event in detroit. michigan is considered a key battleground state in the presidential election. former president trump took his presidential campaign to dallas today, where he gave the keynote address before the annual meeting of the national rifle association. the presumptive republican presidential nominee

to 30 years in prison yesterday after being convicted of assault and attempted kidnaping soon after yesterday's sentencing, prosecutors asked the judge to reopen the hearing to allow depape to speak. in a court filing today, the judge said she made an error in not giving the defendant a chance to talk before being sentenced at a hearing. to give him that chance has been scheduled for may 28th, though it's unclear whether depape will speak. he also faces a criminal trial in san francisco. superior court, which is due to begin next week. and if he's convicted, there, his state sentence will run concurrently with his federal sentence. piedmont police announced today that a recent vehicle that turned into has turned into an arson case. a car fire here. officers were responding to a car fire report around 1:15 a.m. friday morning, when they found this car charred on crocker avenue. police say they reviewed footage from the

scene and confirmed arson was the cause of the fire. authorities did not release where the video came from or a suspect description. this remains an active investigation. cleanup efforts are underway in houston and the surrounding neighborhoods following deadly torrential rains and hurricane force winds this week. crews also working to restore power to hundreds of thousands of people left in the dark. fox's katy byrne has the story. >> we need help. i'm going to be the machine. people over here has got medical issues. we need help or we need water and food. >> anxiety and frustration are growing in houston. that's where hundreds of thousands of people remain without power after deadly thunderstorms and hurricane force winds swept through the region thursday. >> i would like some answers as far as how long it's going to be, if maybe we need to make plans to actually leave the area for a while. >> energy officials warn it could take at least a week to get back up and running. crews are still out assessing damage and it could take some time to

replace equipment, including massive transmission lines knocked down during those 100 mile per hour wind gusts. >> if a school doesn't have power, it probably will remain close. >> this could mean another day of government offices closed and canceled classes for some on monday, while crews work on restoration. much of the city is also cleaning up workers boarding up windows and sweeping up glass downtown in the houston suburb of cypress, where a tornado touched down. neighbors helped each other. >> it's unbelievable how much glass was in there. it's all over the place, but they've cleaned up much of it. >> all the work happening amid a smog warning and rising temperatures, forecasters are predicting highs of around 90 by the start of the week, with heat indexes reaching triple digits by midweek. several cooling centers are now open for people to find relief in houston. katie byrne, fox weather. >> more than 100 pg and e and electrical workers competed in livermore today in the west coast lineman's rodeo. the event featured workers from throughout the state, and they competed in

several events such as pole climbing and a hurt man rescue. this happened at the pga training facility. some people studying to become linemen themselves were able to come by and watch professionals compete. >> we have also apprentices coming to this event where the apprentices as they are, you know, in a school today to learn to learn the craft, to learn the skills. so some of the easy ones, like climbing a pole, but climbing a pole also could be a very critical task from a safety. so how they can demonstrate use using their fault protection linemen from nevada also came out to support and compete in the rodeo. >> new at ten. crowds showed up for the chicken and beer festival in jack london square in oakland. plenty of vendors prepared chicken in all styles, from korean barbecue to southern craft beers from all over the bay area. also serving pints on tap. proceeds from the festival are donated to youth who are training in the food and beverage industry. >> my goodness, that was right outside our door. christina. where were we? good afternoon. good evening. i should say we

are looking at another beautiful one coming our way for tomorrow. slightly warmer into the second part of the day, but this is going to kick off a warming trend that will continue into the work week. let's talk about tomorrow though, because most have the day off. it's a dark one out there. the clouds are moving back across the bay. here's a look at storm tracker two along the coast inside the bay and tomorrow morning, likely to wake with partly cloudy skies. not likely to have as much fog, though as today. and with the sunny skies to start in many areas, we will begin to see a quicker rebound with our temperatures. fairfield we've got an onshore breeze gusting to 39mph. most areas are enjoying a light breeze, but through the delta and the carquinez strait it is a windy one for those communities and for folks driving those paths there. the temperatures are very similar to where we were yesterday. most areas are within a few degrees. we have 53 right now in san francisco, 54 in walnut creek,

voting in favor. the employees were known as cast members portray mickey mouse, cinderella, and other characters in the park. the cast members say they can frequently get injured while on the job, and they're not compensated enough. most of the rest of disneyland employees are already unionized. walt disney company has not yet issued a public statement. auto workers at a mercedes-benz plant in alabama have voted against joining the united auto workers union, and this is a major blow to organizing efforts in the south. fox's madison, scarpino, brings more details on the no vote and how the uaw is responding. >> 56% of workers at two mercedes factories near tuscaloosa voted no to unionizing friday. it's the first big loss for the uaw after recent wins. just last month, volkswagen workers in chattanooga, tennessee, overwhelmingly voted to join the uaw. the union also secured pay raises and better pensions for workers at general motors. ford and stellantis. last year, after weeks of strikes. but no doubt

this was a setback for the union . >> i've lost elections in my life. most of us have lost elections in our lives. we learn from it and we move forward, and that's what we intend to do. we put everything we had in this fight. we left nothing on the table. so there's no regrets in this fight. the uaw accuses mercedes of breaking the law by intimidating workers into voting no. >> mercedes denies that and says it looks forward to continuing to work directly with workers. historically, unions have been unpopular in the south. alabama governor kay ivey reacted to friday's vote, saying alabama is not sweet home to the uaw. she also said automotive manufacturing is one of alabama's crown jewel industries and number one in the country, and we are committed to keeping it that way. the results of the vote still need to be certified. both sides could object within five days. in atlanta. madison, scarpino fox news. >> this week in new york, former

president trump's once loyal fixer and former lawyer took the stand against his old boss and outside the courthouse, a series of top republican politicians lined up to defend the former president. alex michaelson, host of the issue, is spoke with former president, former biden press secretary jen psaki ahead of this weekend's episode. >> they are going out there and basically attacking the judge, the jury, the judge's daughter, the prosecutor. trump can't do that. michael cohen he can't do that. it would violate the gag order. so they're doing his dirty work for him. so in that sense, it's helpful to him, them, their audience for their communication is trump, which tells you how much he owns the republican party. >> also on this week's program is this map, which shows the recent real clear politics average of polls. according to a series of recent polls in swing states, donald trump would win the presidential contest against joe biden if it was held today. >> but for democrats out there who think like there's these, you know, donald trump is

killed at least two people and left more than two dozen injured. the regional ukrainian governor said that more than 9900 people have been evacuated from the area over fears of a ground attack from russian troops. russian president vladimir putin said the military operation is attempting to create a buffer zone, but denied that russia has plans to capture the city. a key member of israel's war cabinet says he'll resign on june 8th unless a new war plan is implemented that includes the return of hostages and demilitarized the gaza strip, among other demands. meantime, the israeli army released new video today of the latest arrival of humanitarian aid to people living along the gaza strip. it shows trucks rolling across a newly built floating pier built by the u.s. into the besieged region for the first time. israeli restrictions on border crossings and heavy hindered the delivery of earlier food and other supplies to gaza.

this shipment is the first of a major humanitarian aid operation that could eventually scale up to 150 truckloads a day. people gathered today to mourn those killed in recent israeli air strikes, as the victims bodies were brought to a hospital in the gaza strip. the israeli airstrike in the in the city refugee or the excuse me, in the nuseirat refugee camp killed at least five people who were later identified as police officers. those officers were part of a civilian force separate from hamas's military force. more than 2000 students graduated from sonoma state university. today and the ceremony follows a controversy on campus this week involving pro-palestinian protesters and the abrupt retirement of the university president. ktvu amanda quintana has more from rohnert park. >> i'm excited, i'm nervous. i think it's a lot of emotions at once, but i'm like, this was a long journey, so i'm very happy that i'm here today. >> students are feeling all the emotions as they say goodbye to their time at sonoma state.

graduation day is finally here with the final week of school full of, well, a lot of drama for sure. on tuesday, the university president, mike lee, made a school wide announcement saying he had come to an agreement with pro-palestinian student protesters. those agreements included disclosing university investments to a pro-palestinian student advisory council and promising an academic boycott of educational programs connected to israel. he also called for a ceasefire in gaza and condemned all acts of genocide, racism and anti-semitism. but a day later, he said he'd made a mistake by doing that without the proper approvals, lee was placed on leave by the csu chancellor for, quote, insubordination, and the next day she announced his retirement. graduate s have differing opinions after seeing it all play out. >> there are some things that i think the president could have done better, that the organizers of the encampment probably could

have done better in their demands. they're not critically thinking about, you know, what is actually a helpful demand when we're talking about discourse and stuff, because that seems like where mike lee got caught up. >> i absolutely support and stand with president mike lee, with what happened recently with him being asked to leave, i think that the basis of activism comes from using a position of power, even at risk of your position. >> some even contemplated not coming to graduation. erica halyard saying, it's been hard to be happy about her accomplishments. >> it's been tough to, you know, go through, especially going with graduation and having all this going on, even coming was a decision to actually attend. so it was it was a hard decision. >> while some chose to keep their focus on getting that diploma, the best way to get through it was just to mostly focus on my work and kind of shut that out. as for the ceremonies in acting president, doctor nathan evans is stepping in a university spokesperson

filmmaker francis ford coppola's first new movie in more than a decade has caught the attention of audiences. coppola was surrounded by family members for support following the death of his wife of 60 years last month, meg gallopoulos is his fourth movie to appear at the festival. he won the top prize in 1974 and 1979. ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages. the 85 year old oscar winner says he began conceiving the movie back in the early 1980s. it's described as a futuristic take on the roman empire and reportedly cost $120 million to make. some of the funding came from coppola's sonoma wine empire, and there's plenty of excitement building for the bay area's forthcoming wnba team, the valkyries. through the growing fan base, a special block party and another cloudy and cool night today across the bay, meteorologist rosemary oroczo will have your complete bay area forecast.

shoulder and whole hog. also, this weekend is smoke slam. the world's ultimate barbecue competition. this is the first year of that festival, which is wrapping up tonight. and in texas, hundreds of people, all with the same first name, got together this weekend to try to break a world record 706 men and women, all named kyle, came together in the city of kyle, texas, just south of austin. but they fell short of breaking the current guinness world record, set in 2017, when more than 2300 people named ivan gathered in bosnia. the group of kyle's also met last year but fell short then two the kyle's who gathered today said they hoped to do better next time. >> we're all saying we're going to contact at least two kyle's and bring them with us. >> got to beat a lot of cool kyle's out here and do a lot of like shopping with local vendors . >> those participating in the gathering were required to show proof of identification, have the same name, spelling and have kyle as their first name nicknames, by the way, not

accepted. well, the summer travel season kicks off next weekend with the memorial day holiday. it's shaping up to be one of the busiest travel periods on record. the tsa says it's expecting more than 26,000 flights every day through labor day, a nearly 6% increase from 2023. >> most americans will be driving, as we mentioned, and that means they're going to be going to the pump and filling up. we don't expect a tremendously large hike in gas prices between now and memorial day, but you might see a bump of a few cents per gallon. the interesting thing is we have not seen gas prices affect people's want to travel. those planned road trips or vacations. americans for the past few years have been doing that. regardless of the cost of gasoline. we expect that to continue this year. >> aa expects nearly 6 million californians will be traveling for memorial day weekend. well, the giants have been on fire as of late. a big reason is because of lui mato that
