4:01 am
reasons. i'm leaning on the cooler side. so 60s and 70s. speaking on the cooler side, here he is, mister sal castaneda, free trade coffee, steve with glacier water, a handpicked organic, shade grown and only sustainable coffee. >> exactly. that's exactly it. all right, let's go to highway four, there was a crash. highway four, right. let me put the indicator just to show you. right at the connector ramp to 242. there's a little bit of a backup there. as they clean up the remnants of a big rig crash. it's almost gone. they're still clearing up some debris, but there's only a little bit of a backup there right now. if you're going to the bay bridge toll plaza, it is light. so right now we have a good start for you to grab that cup of coffee and go 401. let's go back to the desk. >> okay, sal, we'll demonstrators in berkeley have taken over a building owned by uc berkeley that's not far from the campus. >> yeah, uc berkeley officials say they believe these are not the same people who set up camp

4:03 am
sproul plaza after coming to a resolution with the university. in a statement, the university said today is the 55th anniversary of people's park. an action was first announced on platforms controlled by people's park activists. they are vandalizing an unsafe, boarded up, fire damaged building next to people's park. we have confirmed that the coalition with whom we reached an understanding yesterday did not initiate today's action. uc berkeley police say they estimate 10 to 20 people are inside the building, which no longer is in use because of a fire that left it badly burned in 2022. the protest has been largely peaceful, something students like william are thankful for as he was busy moving across the street from the protest. >> i didn't even like, know because we got like a warn me, like, you know, our campus, kind of like news, like alerts, whatever. and they're like, oh, police activity on like, this street. i'm like, oh, like what's going on? and i see, and it's just, it doesn't look like too much is going on. >> everyone we spoke to hopes the protest remains this way.
4:04 am
it's unclear for how long these folks will be out here in this encampment. we can't tell you that there have been police and chp here on the scene. just monitoring the situation in berkeley. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. bailey thank you. time is 403. will the protesters who had been at sproul plaza on the cal campus, packed up and went to uc merced, where the uc regents are meeting? they want the regents to divest from companies that give support to israel during the war in gaza, an investment officer for uc said the uc system could lose $32 billion of its $175 billion in assets if it agreed to the demands of the students to divest. uc officials have already said they don't plan to divest today, classes at uc irvine will be held online following a showdown on campus between the police and pro-palestinian protesters.
4:05 am
>> three protesters took over the physical sciences building and blocked the entrance. that's when university police called for assistance and hundreds of law enforcement officers in riot gear rushed to the campus. many demonstrators were detained when they would not leave, and the university declared their protest an unlawful assembly. >> no more business as usual. when 15,000 children were bombed in the past three months. no more business as usual. we all love each other. we all care about each other, our people, our humanitarian standing up for human rights here. >> we don't know yet if any of the protesters were formally arrested or just detained. the encampment that had been on campus for a few weeks was also cleared. now you can stay up to date on the continuing campus protests across the bay area and nationwide. just go to ktvu.com for the latest updates. the presidential debate schedule is now set. it began with a social media post from president biden challenging donald trump to two
4:06 am
debates. trump quickly accepted there will be two debates 1st june 27th, hosted by cnn, the other september 10th on abc. >> biden seemed to be driving this car all day and i think that you will see republicans questioning they don't like cnn. they really don't like abc. they'll be questioning why president trump agreed so quickly to do it this way. >> both campaigns have bypassed the commission on presidential debates, which had already set dates and venues for three debates in the fall. >> can i take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation, without any mental reservation? >> after a few days on the job, it looks like oakland's new police chief is settling in. the city released this video of police chief floyd mitchell being sworn in. his first day on the job was monday. a public swearing in ceremony is expected in the near future. >> people across the bay area are getting on their bikes this morning to join the national celebration, promoting bikes as
4:07 am
a way to commute. previously called bike to work day, the annual event is now referred to bike to wherever day. the change reflects the fact that many people's work and commute habits have shifted since the pandemic. several cities around the bay area have events planned this morning to celebrate and encourage people to ride their bikes. >> our time is now 406. will the oakland ballers baseball team hope to include a bit of the city's sports history at their new baseball field in west oakland? the ballers formally asked the coliseum joint powers authority for the right to buy about 5000 bleacher seats that were last used when the raiders played at the coliseum. those seats have been sitting unused in the parking lot of the stadium since the raiders moved to las vegas. now, if that purchase is approved, the ballers would install them before next year's season. well the giants have a much needed day off today after playing 16 straight days, they'll host the colorado rockies starting tomorrow. >> after enjoying their first
4:08 am
win of the season against the dodgers, 4 to 1. mike yastrzemski hit a two run homer in the third inning. logan webb threw six shutout innings, but the play of the night came from outfielder luis matos, who stretched over the center wall. now watch this here. there it is, rob. the dodgers of a home run. quite a play. let's see that again. just catch that over the wall. well the a's need a win today against the houston astros to avoid a four game sweep. the a's were shut out three zeros. the offense struck out nine times. could only muster two hits. the a's have dropped four straight games. well, hopefully it'll be nice weather this weekend for baseball. >> what's your definition of nice weather? i mean, sunny, yeah, my definition is not too hot, not too cold right? maybe 78 i can tell you that. okay. all right. we have big fog bank drizzle out there. kind of
4:09 am
interesting here. i'll just show you this. it's watch the thunderstorm activity coming off the mountain. see? look at that. so if you're up in the mountains, maybe a little activity, but boy, this is a big fog bank in place. pretty decent breeze as well. mount diablo west at 30, san francisco, one observation west at 15 west southwest in the oakland berkeley hills. but the key this time of year is travis 28, gusting to 37. in the words of sal castaneda, they're done. and by that i mean there's some huge differences on the forecast highs. if travis has augusta 37, there's no way they're warming up that much unless something collapses. and i don't think it will in the fog. banks that big. so look for drizzle 50s on the temps. we are starting off on the mild even 60 vacaville brentwood 61 a lot of 50s here due to the low cloud deck. even to the north. i don't think that konocti is right, but we'll fix that. 50 is on the temps and you know, with the low cloud deck and boy, it's tough to burn off here for some 30s in the mountains. 50 arcadia to 61 in san diego. lots of gray in fact,
4:10 am
it'll be here for a while. maybe some drizzle here. there's a little bit out there this morning. coast and bay. so santa cruz mountains, some of the higher elevations, a couple 100 certainly looks likely. a lot of gray over the bay. low overcast, drizzle, fog, then sun. nice to mild 60s 70s on the thames. >> thank you steve. overdose deaths are down nationwide. coming up. the work being done locally to save lives. but the reason some say this is just one step in the right direction and a message of hope. >> after a near death experience, we'll let you hear from a hit and run victim who's honoring the lives of people who have d d on

4:15 am
of 2022, she was riding her bicycle home after work as a bartender when a driver hit her from behind and sped off. she suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for more than a month. thomas tells me she's still coping with chronic pain and fatigue more than two years after the crash, but she's grateful for a second chance at life. >> the will to live in me is really strong and i'm never going to give up. >> a message of hope for those mourning the loss of loved ones on this night. >> that's charles. >> charles vincent is among the dozens of bicyclists killed who are being honored. his longtime partner shows me the bicycle that charles gave him grief not only for charles, but for all. >> all the other 40 plus people that will be observing tonight. >> the bicyclists made stops at locations where there have been deadly crashes. organizers say a reminder that the city has made some safety improvements in response to bicyclist killed. a call for proactive instead of
4:16 am
reactive measures, someone is killed in the community. >> it really hurts all of us, even though we may not even know the person. it really because we always feel it could be one of us that can be killed, thomas says. >> even though the driver in her case still hasn't been caught, she says she has forgiven him and now lives a life of gratitude and advocacy. >> if you see somebody who needs help, ask them if they if you can help them. it's love is always the answer. >> thomas is calling on the city to install more surveillance cameras and protected bike lanes, but she's also urging bicyclists to take personal risks responsibility by wearing helmets and observing traffic rules. in san francisco, amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, amber, thank you. time is 416. the oakland unified school district says its school busses are becoming greener. the school district showed off its new fleet of electric busses. it's working with the transport company zoom to become the first
4:17 am
major all electric vehicle bus fleet in the country. there are 74 electric busses, as well as the charging equipment, and zoom says the fleets batteries will send energy back to the grid when it's not being used, reducing carbon emissions by 25,000 tons by electrifying and having this vision of all students being able to ride on these electric busses, we're not worrying about students being sick. >> we're not worrying about emissions. it just is the right thing to do. >> now, the entire new fleet of electric busses is expected to be available at the beginning of the next school year. zoom is also working with the san francisco unified school district on their electric bus fleet. >> capital expressway is about to get smaller to make room for a new light rail extension project. vta says one lane in each direction will be removed between quimby road to capital avenue. it's all part of the extension of the light rail from the alum rock transit center to
4:18 am
the eastridge transit center. the goal is to make it easier for people to connect to bart in milpitas. a formal groundbreaking ceremony will be held in june. >> our time is 417. the renovation work at the harvey milk terminal at san francisco international airport is just about complete, and ktvu was given a sneak peek and by next month, the final phase of the $2.5 billion project is scheduled to be finished. it features new baggage, self-check kiosks that are designed to be faster than the traditional bag check ins. the terminal is also designed to move passengers and their luggage through security. >> 30% faster, rather than having to take multiple tubs to put all of your belongings into it, you're going to use one large tray that has everything your carry on, your shoes, your belt. it all goes into a single tray, and once you're through security, all of the terminals will be interconnected to allow people to actually wander around
4:19 am
during long layovers, early check ins or delays. >> the refurbished and expanded parts of terminal one are due to open on june 11th. >> water officials in santa clara county want to ban people from camping along rivers and creeks. a proposal from valley water would establish protection zones along the nearly 300 miles of waterways under its control. the move would ban encampments and dumping trash penalties could include $500 fines and up to 30 days in jail for violators who return and reestablish encampments. city leaders say these encampments send garbage and contaminants into the water, but some worry the plan leaves homeless people with limited options. >> a lot of places to go where i pretty much, i like to look for a place that is our partners at valley water to push policies and approaches that clear the waterways and protect our watershed. >> there is a real risk of their
4:20 am
efforts sending hundreds of homeless individuals out into the neighborhoods without a plan . >> the proposal will go before valley waters environmental creek cleanup committee tomorrow . >> all right. our times for 19. steve paulson is back, and you actually saw some light drizzle a little bit. little clark. >> that is correct, not a lot, but enough where you could see it. and temperatures, as you know, i mean, we really haven't had much in the way of warm weather a couple of days. but the outlook here, at least the 23rd through the 27th shows cooler than average temperatures, so i'll buy into that. it looks like a series of systems are coming in for today. another big fog bank in place. a little bit of drizzle out there. sunny, breezy to downright windy, you can see the low cloud deck, a few high clouds zipping overhead, but the low cloud deck is firmly in place. west south west wind at pittsburgh to 31mph. it's an onshore breeze or wind, and when travis is 28,
4:21 am
gusting to 37, that is extra. hold on the hairspray day. so, there are some big differences in some of the forecast highs as much as ten degrees. i'm not buying the warmer. i'm staying with this big fog bank, now the air aloft is kind of warm for some. i mean, the oakland hills, 49 degrees. that's right above the claremont southwest 17. that'll get your attention. mount veeder, 55, boulder creek 48. so, i mean, again, temperatures below about 3000ft. you can see the activity coming off the mountains. first watch again over by bishop fresno. so there is a little bit of an offshore breeze. and the higher elevations. but at the surface it is all onshore 50 for most here upper 50s to right at 60. but i mean there's some mild air mass in place. water temps have come up. they're about the mid 50s now compared to the low 50s a couple a week ago. 51 kensington, 53 panola, 53. lafayette 53. orinda 54 clayton and north dublin. so everyone's pretty close 30s up at truckee and south lake tahoe, also at mammoth at 39 degrees, too much
4:22 am
low clouds and fog. a little bit of activity pops up over the mountains there. so if you're going up there, just keep an eye on things there. but drizzle looks to be front and center for the next couple of days. maybe not this much, but i do buy into some of this drizzle the next couple of days. so a lot of gray over the bay. low overcast, drizzle, fog than sun. my forecast highs are significantly lower than what you might hear on the radio or somewhere else but 60s and 70s on those temps. >> all right steve, thank you. time is now 421. we take a walk down memory lane with congresswoman barbara lee. the connection she had to the first black woman elected to congress. and the new netflix movie that highlights it all a man tracked a stolen truck across the bay area using bluetooth tracking device. >> but why? he's frustrated with police after h calle them or

busy, don't care. it wasn't until the news got involved were also there, kicked into high gear. >> about an hour later, he received a call from redwood city saying oakland police had towed his car. there's no word about any arrests, but the victim says he's worried those thieves may come back and try to steal his truck again. >> a new report says car dealerships are seeing a jump in sales, but it's not new cars. people are looking for, according to car shopping guide edmunds sales hit record highs due to more inventory and falling prices for used vehicles. the research shows many customers are more likely to afford a used car and sales for new vehicles won't pick up until dealers offer better incentives. this summer, uber is launching a shuttle bus service to and from airports, concerts and sporting events. users will be able to reserve up to five seats from a central location for less than a regular uber ride. the new service will initially be available in miami, chicago, pittsburgh and charlotte. there are plans to expand to more cities in the future. a local university

>> good morning. thank you for joining us here on mornings on two i'm pam cook and good morning i'm dave clark thursday morning may 16th it's friday eve. yes it is. >> and steve the forecast kind of calm pretty much it is mr. clarke. >> that is correct. i the only thing i'd add maybe a little drizzle for some may or may if you're inland, it won't matter. but if coast and bay you're like, hey, hey what's going on here? so it's 50 on the temps, we are looking for a mild start. almost everyone is in the 50s here, but there's another huge fog bank in place here, so i'm leaning on the cooler temps. not the warmer temps 60s and 70s. all right. sounds here for 30. anything we should know about are all good. it's all clear. >> which is nice, steve. and just kind of sitting around waiting for the rush to get here. if you can see it here, you can see traffic is moving along very nicely and we did clear that crash on 242 at for you may see a little bit of slowdown. i may just a little bit but the rest of the commute looks good. so we're just going

to leave it alone as i like to do when things are doing very well. it's 430. let's go back to the headlines. >> all right. thank you. sal. less than a day after one group of pro-palestinian protesters packed up their encampment on uc berkeley's campus, a new group has taken over a university building and plans to stay. dozens of protesters entered the anahad alumni center hall yesterday, breaking boarded up windows and spraying graffiti. the building had been vacant since 2022. right now, it is unclear how many protesters are inside the building. university police are calling this an active crime scene, but some students who live nearby say they are not alarmed by the demonstration. >> i'm really glad that people are expressing like their opinion and are able to like, you know, voice their beliefs and everything, especially like in peaceful manners, like it's not like they're disturbing or like disrupting or like hurting anyone. >> now, we asked the university about it. would not say if police have plans to come in and shut down the encampment or get
4:32 am
people out of the inside of that building. >> our time is now. 431 the president of sonoma state university has been placed on administrative leave after he sent an unapproved campus wide message saying the school had reached an agreement with pro-palestine protesters. in the letter, university president mike lee wrote that sonoma state will take part in an academic boycott with israeli universities, including reassessing study abroad programs in israel. the letter also says the school will review its investments. now, the chancellor of the california state university system says the message was sent without the appropriate approvals. she added i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and community members to see and read. >> student protesters at san francisco state university say they are taking down their encampment after reaching an
4:33 am
agreement with the school's president. they say the school has agreed to make its investment portfolio more transparent and divest from any company that manufactures weapons. immediately after announcing the news, protesters started packing up their tents. student organizers say this agreement does not address all of their demands, but they call it a strong first step. the only demand that we haven't currently met is declared declaring it a genocide, calling it what it is, which is still very important and something that we're going to continue to work on through the summer and into the fall. the organizers also say they are working on bringing all csu students together to make a system wide change. >> our time is now. 433. the artists who created an iconic sculpture at san jose state talked to student demonstrator who set up encampments at the foot of his protest piece. >> you know, this statue is has always been meant to be of service to you so that you could use use it for your advocacy
4:34 am
like it's great. >> now, rigo, 23, created the famous statue showing track and field stars tommie smith and john carlos raising their fists in the air in the black power salute at the 1968 olympic games. the two athletes once attended san jose state. the artist told us that sculpture includes an empty spot representing student activism. >> this monument at the center of san jose state university celebrates the very thing that's happening right now. tommie smith and john carlos were students here. they paid a very personal high price for the bravery of their action in mexico city. >> now, the visit by the artist followed a statement by san jose state saying tommie smith and john carlos disapproved of the statue being used as part of the student encampment. however, the statement added that smith and carlos support the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

>> now you can stay up to date on the ongoing campus protests across the bay area and nationwide. just head to ktvu.com for the latest updates. >> well, new data is out this morning revealing the number of overdose deaths in the united states has gone down slightly since last year. yeah, from 2022 to 2023, the cdc estimates overdose deaths declined about 3. >> ktvu, lamonica peters has details on some of the tools being used to fight the drug crisis here in the bay area. >> doctor cheryl ho is medical director for santa clara county's behavioral health department and says although national numbers declined some, the crisis isn't over. we are hopeful. >> we are hopeful that these trends are coming down, as they have been crushing with the past years of the overdose statistic. >> santa clara county's data board shows overdose deaths increased from 195 deaths in 2022 to 220 8 in 2023. but ho

doctor, are starting to use it. >> drug abuse statistics show that in the u.s. opioids like fentanyl are a factor in seven of ten drug overdose deaths. we are keeping people alive through narcan, which is fantastic, but we need to look at how can we actually prevent overdoses, not just prevent death. if you or someone you know needs help or you want more information about narcan or fentanyl testing strips, just go to ktvu .com and click the link for this story. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. thank you lamonica. may is melanoma and skin cancer awareness month. and health care professionals are reminding people to protect themselves as warmer weather gets us outside and exposed to the sun for longer periods of time, dermatologists warn the increased sun exposure could raise your chances of developing skin cancer. and doctors point out, while people with lighter complexions have a higher risk, skin cancer can impact every african americans, asians and hispanics do have a risk of

melanoma. >> the risk is much lower because they don't experience sunburns. but the issue becomes late diagnosis and late treatment. >> dermatologists recommend water resistant sunscreen, reapplying often, and this is really important. 10 to 15 minutes before your you head outside. >> i concur pamela. yes, i would agree with that. all right. take a look at the sierra snowpack as you might imagine, it is decreasing rapidly here from march 7th, when there was 100, 102 to now 20in. so that's at echo peak, 7800ft. but you know what? it was another good year. took a while to get going, but it ended up in february, march and april were good. temperatures look to be cooler than average. i'm not really sold on the entire west coast being cooler, but that's the way it does look, at least through the 2728 the rest of may is favoring a lot of low clouds and fog, and near normal temps to
4:39 am
