needed before they consider leaving. this united will never be defeated. at the center of campus, student organizers held a rally at the university of san francisco at 3 p.m, the deadline that the school's president gave the antiwar protesters to leave the site. students and supporters spoke out against the war in gaza. >> theology is action, not silence. if the world is committing injustice and you do not speak out against that injustice, you are responsible. >> the students have had the tent encampment for two weeks, calling for the private university to take action, to divest from companies tied to the war in israel and take other actions to support palestinian students on campus and palestinians in gaza, where the un has declared a humanitarian crisis, students say it is personal to some of the protesters. >> we've had folks whose friends

lost 30 over 30 people from their family entire, like bloodlines lost. so all of this really, like amplifies the need for us to be a voice for the people who don't have a voice. >> in a letter to protesters, usf president paul fitzgerald explained steps they plan to take after negotiations monday between the staff and students. those include calling again for a ceasefire in gaza, giving a student a seat on the new socially responsible investment task force and considering a request for a second seat. researching curriculum changes and the addition of palestinian studies. students say they plan to remain on site, however, until they have assurances of more action. >> we know that we're here till graduation, we're here until you know, we get another meeting and we get clear defined answers on everything. >> the university sent ktvu a statement saying in part, the university is continuing to prioritize communication, dialog and de-escalation with the

protesters. we remain committed to continuing dialog and have not cut off conversation. there are no plans to clear the encampment or involve law enforcement as long as the encampment is peaceful and nonviolent. and back here live at the usf campus, the university says anyone who remains camped here past today's deadline could be disciplined if they violate the student conduct code, and that includes a suspension or possible expulsion if they commit any kind of damage to property or harm anyone. so far, mike and julie, there has been no meeting set again to negotiate with the staff, and i heard that one student in your story there mentioned graduation. >> i mean, when is graduation? could it be delayed, possibly even canceled? >> at this point it appears the graduation ceremonies are going to proceed as usual. and that starts this coming thursday, may 16th, and goes through the

weekend. so they say that they are going to be here, but certainly we'll have to see what steps the university decides to take. jana katsuyama live tonight at the university of san francisco. >> gianna. thank you. >> all right. happening now. sky fox is overhead. the uc berkeley campus at this hour, where protesters there have begun dismantling their encampment. a uc spokesperson telling ktvu, quote, if the process is completed, the university will discuss the talks we've been having with the protesters in recent weeks. the encampment first emerged in the school's sproul plaza weeks ago, and unlike so many other encampments across the country, this situation here has largely remained peaceful, with uc berkeley officials taking a hands off approach to the encampment. the national campus protest movement is winding down as schools begin to wrap up their semesters, and it was demonstrators taking on developers in silicon valley today as protesters try to shut down google's biggest conference of the year. >> ktvu is jesse gary reports. the tech giant's billion dollar contract with israel continues to be a lightning rod for

operation to a clear strategic end game. >> president biden has said a ceasefire could be possible as soon as this week, though the israelis and hamas have yet to reach a deal. within the past few minutes, we have just learned the us will be sending a new package more than $1 billion in arms and ammunition to israel. that information just coming into our newsroom, we will bring you more details as we get them. >> after weeks of listening to racist and anti-semitic remarks, the palo alto city council has now voted to ban public comment via zoom. >> unfortunately, first amendment requires us to give these vile commenters a space to express their views, and so we're unable to cut them off before their time is through. no matter how badly those comments by palo alto mayor greer stone came during last night's meeting after several people called in using racial slurs targeting the jewish muslim and black communities. >> at the vice mayor suggestion, council members later voted to

ban public's ability to make a general comment via zoom. although the decision was not unanimous. >> the want to show up here in person and do it, you know that's their right, but i think these technological advancements have had some unintended consequences. >> i do have concerns that, we're just keeping excluding a group of people from our community that are not going to be able to comment, this way people will still be allowed to comment via zoom on specific agenda items, but not for general comment. >> new at five tonight, governor newsom stopped in the bay area today to announce an update to the recently passed prop position one. >> the bond measure is a major part of newsom's reformed approach to mental health and homelessness crisis. and now he's moving up the timeline here. ktvu political reporter greg leigh with us in studio. you were with the governor in san mateo county today. he doesn't want to go slow on this.

he wants to go a little bit quicker. yeah. >> mike. julie, the governor is saying the state needs to move with urgency on this issue this summer and ahead of schedule, the state will make more than $3 billion available to help build behavioral health treatment beds and sites. the announcement comes days after newsom announced cuts or delays to affordable housing and homelessness programs to deal with the state's budget deficit, governor gavin newsom worked with state and county leaders at cordillera mental health center in redwood city. the san mateo county facility set to open a new expansion in a few months. the backdrop for the governor to announce the state's expediting funding from proposition one, which aims to tackle the state's homelessness crisis. >> $3.3 billion on the notice of funding availability will go out. we will quickly approve those plans because we have a new task force and strike team around this breaking down all of the boxes. >> voters narrowly approved the measure in march. in part, it authorizes the state to use $6.4 billion in bonds to build housing and treatment beds for people experiencing serious mental health illnesses and

addiction. applications for the funding were set to open in the fall, but will now open in july for cities, counties and organizations to build or improve centers like this, prop one encourages counties to be ambitious about behavioral health care services and to address the root causes of the many challenges our communities face. cordillera has not received any prop one funding yet, but newsom used it as an example of what the state wants to see. to underscore the point, a woman whose son receives care here spoke about its efficacy. >> i wish every county had available for mentally ill clients what this county has available. >> not everyone agrees disability rights california opposed prop ones passage and said in a statement. drc opposes governor newsom's behavioral health system reforms, which expand forced treatment using proposition one. money to build locked facilities will harm people with mental illness and substance use disorders. prop

one also reworks attacks for mental health services requiring counties to spend much of the money on housing and programs for homeless people. newsom called out 19 counties who he says are out of compliance with housing mandates and are reluctant to use tools like care court. >> it's time to do your job. it's time to get things done. you ask for these reforms. we've provided them. now it's time to deliver, and we know that any kind of transformation and we're talking today about transforming our mental health system, any kind of transformation. >> it takes collaboration and compassion. >> now, the governor maintained today, despite those budget cuts, counties have all the resources they need. he also announced a new website to track the changes to the state's mental health system, and that san mateo county will be an early adopter of the care court model, joining seven other statewide, including san francisco, san mateo county, saying they are all in on this program. all right. >> what about the timeline specifically on the money? you know, once a county or organization applies, how long until they would receive that? >> and the governor saying that's part of moving fast,

right. if people apply in july, he wants them to be approved, if they're found worthy within the next three months. and that money could go out by the end of the year. >> all right, greg, thank you. yeah well, a dramatic scene in san francisco's richmond district. police say two suspects in a robbery have been detained after crashing their car. this is video of the aftermath. police say it began when two men robbed a woman in the area of 26th and balboa street at about 1030. this morning. officers abandoned their pursuit after a brief chase. witnesses tell us the suectsere driving a black sedan when they crashed into the blue mini cooper, and then crashed into the building at the corner of eighth and cabrillo street. responding officers detained two people in the area for questioning, and the driver of the blue car was treated at the scene. ktvu crystal bailey is following this story and will have more police from police and witnesses coming up for us tonight on ktvu. two news at 6:00 burglarized again ahead at 530 tonight. the oakland mother and daughter devastated after suffering another break in. >> also, fremont police

where the 40 niners will be playing week one. the team announcing today that they will host the new york jets for the season opener on september 9th. a little monday night football quarterback aaron rodgers, the former cal bear, will return for the jets after he ruptured his achilles tendon early in the first game last year with the team. this will be the first time the niners are actually opening their regular season schedule at home in three years, and we had a pretty great day, a pretty typical spring day or early summer, if you will. >> we had a lot of fog at the coast. there's a lot of fog inland overnight because the marine layer did that move where it got really deep up over 2000ft deep. that also helped it burn off a little earlier in the inland areas, because it didn't have a lot of support down low, fractured pretty quick and cleared up pretty quick. but tomorrow does the same thing. this long range model will sort of give you an idea of what's up. can you see? let's see. i think you can see this. so here's the high right in here. and then there's the center of the high right there. and so what's happening is you're going to see that high continue to

stay pretty much put as we go through the next few days. and it stays. it starts to back up a little bit. and this is as we get into friday and saturday and what happens is let's see if i can show this area here kind of drops down. it's not going to show up. there's this trough area right. kind of see that cloud coming in that area drops down. so what did i just point out. we've got a nice pattern that's going to continue for a few days. and then as we get into the weekend, friday, saturday and sunday it continues or it doesn't continue, it actually starts to cool down. there's that marine layer. the high pressure is pressing down on it, but the marine layer is getting pretty deep. i mean, that's that's a pretty deep marine layer right there. so it's going to deepen up tonight and do the same thing it did yesterday or this morning, which is make it inland. the marine layer will get up to around 2000ft. when that happens it goes pretty far inland. you start off cloudy, you end up sunny. the coast rarely or not rarely, but barely clears if at all, in temperatures there remain in the 50s. so tomorrow. today very similar temperatures generally in the 80s in the warmest spot, low 80s and then around the bay in the 70s. see

with a bus. it happened late this afternoon. the driver of the truck was arrested on dui charges, and as fox news jonathan sarai tells us now, the bus was carrying farm workers heading to their jobs. >> a tragic scene tuesday morning, at least eight people are dead and 40 others hospitalized after a bus crash in central florida. the vehicles had a collision of a sideswipe type manner. >> the crash happening on state route 40 in marion county, about 45 miles south of gainesville, authorities said. >> a retired white painted school bus and a pickup truck collided, sending the bus off the road, breaking through a fence and then hitting a tree. it overturned, landing sideways in an empty field. more than 30 ambulances responded to the scene. the florida highway patrol says the bus was carrying more than 50 migrant farm workers who were heading to their jobs. >> we're the fifth largest county in this state. we are very big agricultural county, so

this time of year we always have migrant workers that are in our county that are on busses just like this. >> the sheriff adding he believes all the farm workers have proper documentation. >> they're hard working individuals and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them being here. florida highway patrol is investigating. i'm confident we will have answers for the family to be able to get them closure of why we have this crash today. >> authorities say a full investigation of the crash will take up to six months to complete in atlanta. john ansari ktvu, fox two news and tonight, the half moon bay planning commission will hold its third meeting regarding an affordable housing project for senior farm workers. >> the san mateo county board of supervisors has already approved funding for the project after last year's mass shooting exposed the poor living conditions of farm workers. however, the planning commission has delayed the development twice, citing concerns with the design. this caught the attention of governor newsom, who threatened legal action if

tonight after their clothing store in oakland's rockridge neighborhood was broken into this morning. their other store, also in oakland, was burglarized on easter sunday. our crime reporter, henry lee, is here now after speaking with them. henry. >> yeah, julie, they tell me, despite all this, they're not backing down. they're hopeful and resilient, but at the same time, they're fed up and feel like they can't catch a break. >> it's sad. i feel like we are in a lawless city. >> it's happened yet again. shattered glass window repairs and heartache. this is our second break in. >> in a matter of less than two months. >> brenda taylor and her mother are frustrated and upset. their store, taylor j. on college

avenue in oakland's rockridge district, was broken into at about 630 tuesday morning. this after their other store at 24th and broadway in oakland, was burglarized before dawn on easter sunday when this thief made off with $20,000 in merchandise. >> it's a lot. we're we're tired. you know, we love it here. and, you know, thankfully, the community supports us tremendously. but it's like how much support, how much more support do we ask for? >> on tuesday, this guy smashed the front door window with a crowbar. as the alarm sounded. he helped himself to clothing, including some menswear. he made two trips to a car parked out front. mother and daughter pride themselves on selling handmade designs to women of all lifestyles, sizes and body shapes. they worked hard to open two stores in oakland where they've had to cope with crime. this grim message on a parking meter right outside their rockridge shop warning people

about car break ins. this one two punch of burglaries at their shops almost too much to bear. >> please stop. we're a small business. it's a mother and daughters. my mom and i. the fact that we're just trying to be here and to thrive. >> but we all just seem to be trying to survive. >> her mother, taylor j, says the two men in the break-ins are different, and it's unclear if the same crew is responsible, but she feels they're being targeted. >> it's completely violation, for one. i mean, it's already really hard doing business in oakland because of all the theft, the break ins and the crime. people are just already really nervous and, just not comfortable coming outside, period. >> it's hard to sustain a comfortable lifestyle if someone is just coming in, taking, taking, taking from us. >> the oakland police department's investigating both incidents. anyone with information about either break-in is asked to give them a call live in the studio. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, you can just feel for them. henry. thank you. >> union workers say the city of oakland has failed to collect millions of dollars in tax revenue at a time when the city

faces a $360 million budget deficit. this morning, city workers held a symbolic $34 million check during a press conference right outside city hall. the union members say collection of the tax money could prevent potential service cuts, including the closure of fire stations and slower 911 response times. now they're calling for accountability from the city's finance director. there is a problem in the way that the city is managing funds and resources is it's being mismanaged, it's being handled improperly, and it's being underreported. >> where is the oversight? >> where is the accountability? >> the unions delivered a letter to mayor shengtao calling for action. we have reached out to the city of oakland for comment, but have not heard back now. the mayor has previously said the city can't close the deficit without major cuts to services. >> the san francisco da's office announced charges against a man suspected in an organized retail theft ring. 20 year old cuauhtemoc ramirez is facing

dozens of counts of organized retail theft, grand theft and burglary. prosecute hours say, between december of last year and april of 2024, ramirez and accomplices stole more than $100,000 worth of merchandise from stores such as walgreens, safeway, smart and final and lenscrafters. he has pleaded not guilty. his next court appearance is set for june 10th. >> san jose police are looking for a transient accused of sexually assaulting a girl while she was walking home from school. investigators have released these surveillance photos of the suspect. he has been identified as 50 year old julian salvador martinez. police say the victim was walking home april 9th on south 11th street when the suspect, who was riding a bicycle, grabbed her. he pulled her underneath the 280 overpass and then began to assault her. the victim fought him off and he rode away on his bike. martinez is known to frequent san jose homeless encampments. anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact san jose police. >> a bay area man has been detained in france, three years after a facebook message led to

a warrant for his arrest. french authorities say 31 year old ian cleary, of saratoga, has been in custody since a police stop last month and will be extradited to the us. he is accused of raping shannon keeler after following her home from a party at gettysburg college in pennsylvania back in 2013. keeler says in 2020, she received a facebook message from cleary admitting to the rape. a judge signed the arrest warrant in 2021. >> so will tesla were vandalized at the company's plant in fremont. police say they received a call around 230 yesterday morning. the responding officers located about a dozen teslas with their tires slashed. no arrests have been made. tesla's fremont plant is now the subject of a new lawsuit. the nonprofit group environmental democracy project claims the plant has violated the clean air act by exposing its neighbors to potentially toxic chemicals hundreds of times over the past three years, the bay area air quality

passengers to evacuate. it happened last monday at seatac airport in washington state. the airbus jet had just arrived from cancun when a fire sparked near the nose of the plane, delta says in a statement. the flight crew saw smoke in the nose area after plugging into ground electrical power. passengers were in the process of deplaning and delta says out of an abundance of caution, those who were still on board were evacuated using slides. a united airlines flight from singapore to san francisco international was forced to turn around. less than an hour into its trip. united flight 28 was scheduled to arrive in san francisco at 9:00 tonight, a spokesperson tells ktvu. shortly after takeoff, the plane experienced engine trouble. the pilots landed the plane safely back at the singapore airport. the 197 passengers on board were given free hotel rooms and meal

area weather pattern. this is the fog footprint for tomorrow morning. look at that. so that's a deep marine layer. this morning it was up over 2200ft. and i think tomorrow morning it will be the same. and that allows it to clear the topography necessary to get well inland. and then it burns back and you get temperatures like these. you get the heat in the valley, you get the microclimates, which is what we're also used to around here and appreciate and know and understand the ridge of high pressure. there are some thundershowers showing up from a disturbance down here south down towards bear valley and south down towards mono lake. in those areas, not mono lake. pardon me, down towards mammoth and you can kind of see some of those thunderstorms coming off the west slope. and as they come out over the valley, they sort of dying down a little bit. so we'll keep an eye on those. but right now they're pretty far to the south. temperatures today are warmer than they were yesterday by a few degrees, by more than a few degrees. and as you see the forecast highs for tomorrow, you can see we are back into the pretty much upper 70s low 80s just like we were today. and then the five day forecast. so no rain in the forecast for us. the fog is
