academic, i wouldn't encourage them to do so. a story of perseverance despite the odds. good evening everyone. >> i'm mike mibach and i'm julie julie haener. that new cal grad is an immigrant from southeast asia who spent 20 years in prison, but now he's an advocate for others like him. >> new at six ktvu crystal bailey shares more about the program that helped him turn his life around someday. >> danny dorsey. >> as danny tongs walks across the stage at uc berkeley, he's graduating with a bachelor's degree in sociology. >> to me, i felt like, wow, this is one of our dream come true. born in a refugee camp in thailand when his family was escaping a war in southeast asia , tong's family emigrated to a low income neighborhood in stockton when he was just a little boy. a lot of kids end up in gangs like myself. so what had happened was when i was 17, my older brother was murdered by a rival gang, which led me to a

deep depression. >> eventually, tong retaliated, ending someone's life and sending him on a journey through the prison system. >> till this day that i'm still living with the guilt and shame and i think that part of my education and my academic is a transformation of that to ensure that, you know, that other kids don't make the same mistake like i did. >> while serving his time, he began going to church. >> there were some a preacher that came to my cell and just share about love and forgiveness . >> that's when his whole trajectory shifted. he got his ged, then his associate's degree, and was granted parole. he worked as an advocate for the asian prisoner support committee, a nonprofit organization helping members of the aapi community reenter society. but his immigration status was at stake. facing deportation because of his felony in 2020, governor gavin newsom granted him a pardon after hearing about his advocacy work and that freed him to pursue higher education at cal berkeley through a program

called underground scholars. >> and one thing that i noticed about danny is that he's using his life experience to inform his research and the work that he wants to pursue. >> the program began as a club by a formerly incarcerated student in 2013, danny murillo, who wanted to help others like himself. now it's expanded to every uc and community colleges as a prison to university pipeline. >> every year now we get $4 million from the state budget that gets divided by the nine undergraduate uc campuses to serve formerly incarcerated students and system impacted students in the university. >> at berkeley alone, underground scholars has 40 graduates this semester. yeah, relations. >> yeah. thank you so much. yeah, we did it. >> tong is one of them. and on his big day, he offers these words for dreamers like him. >> here i am, you know, i mean, it's not too late. if i could do it, anybody could do it. >> tong's plans to apply for grad schools in the fall so he can continue working with marginalized communities and supporting formerly incarcerated

individuals in berkeley. crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news a highly emotional day for the family of slain law school student rachel buckner. >> today, her boyfriend was found guilty of murdering her and dismembering her body. ktvu henry lee tells us family and friends say police failed to take action before the murder, despite repeated calls for help, and today means that i can breathe a little bit easier. >> but i know it's not over. >> as jamila buckner is filled with a mix of emotion. on monday in alameda county, jury convicted joseph roberts of second degree murder for killing her daughter rachel elizabeth and monty buckner. authorities say roberts killed his 27 year old girlfriend in their pleasanton apartment. her remains washed up on the alameda shoreline near the bay farm island bridge on july 20th. she was wrapped in tape and her head, hands and feet were missing. >> what today's verdict means for me is that i don't have to

look over my shoulder for right now. i've lived in trauma, in terror. >> authorities say roberts never reported buckner missing and instead began talking with three other women. buckner was two months shy from earning her degree from golden gate university law school. >> there was sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt based on the dna evidence and other circumstantial evidence, da pamela price, who has made it a priority not to let cases languish, noted that this murder trial moved very quickly through the criminal justice system. we appreciate that the case was speedily disposed of relative to the way the normal course of cases in our system, and we believe that justice has been served. >> family and friends say pleasanton police missed warning signs about roberts during earlier visits. >> they should have arrested him on the spot, regardless of what she said. we watched body cam footage of them chatting it up

as he was beating her down 17 times. >> the police came out and did barely anything. this is an injustice that should never have happened. >> roberts will be sentenced on june 14th to 15 years to life in prison in oakland. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> new at six, thousands of dollars worth of merchandise was stolen from a boutique in san francisco. surveillance video does show the thieves inside, but canon boutique on fillmore, you can see the hooded suspect grabbing items and then taking off. it happened yesterday morning around 440. the owner telling us they stole about $36,000 worth of merchandise. >> police in danville are continuing to ask for the public's help in finding an elderly woman who went missing last week. 81 year old alma palma suffers from dementia. she was last seen may 8th in the area of verde mesa drive. police say she was wearing a floral blouse and was carrying a bag of clothing. anyone with information is asked to call danville police.

>> state department officials are now commenting on a recent report that found israel likely violated international humanitarian law in its use of us provided weapons during the war in gaza. u.s. officials say it is reasonable to assess that the weapons have been used in ways inconsistent with israel's obligations, but that war time conditions prevented the us from making that determination for certain specific airstrikes. >> there is a moral and strategic imperative to take every possible step to minimize civilian casualties, steps that we know that the idf has, the tools and the capability to undertake. >> meanwhile, israeli forces continue to move deeper into the southern gaza city of rafah. aid workers saying they are struggling to distribute dwindling food and other supplies to displaced palestinians there on the peninsula, members of the islamic community are denouncing an attack on its members, who are hanging a banner on an overpass. >> ktvu south bay reporter jesse

gary has video of the attack and reaction. what do you think? >> while the region celebrated cinco de mayo just days ago, this profanity laced tirade taking place at the same time became the latest instance of disunity. >> i was incredibly surprised the target was a man we'll call g as he wants to conceal his identity, he says. >> he and another pro-palestine advocate were hanging two banners on this pedestrian overpass above highway 101 near pierce road and alpine avenue. the unidentified man walks up and demands they remove the banners, or else i immediately feared for my life in a way, because he was saying it like so loud and he was like kind of shouting it like. >> i just felt like, okay, what if he attacks us if we don't take this down? >> the pair agreed to remove their signs and leave, but they say the suspect became more agitated and aggressive. he allegedly threw their personal items over the fence and onto the roadways shoulder below. demonstrators say they've hung banners on overpasses around the peninsula before and were on

this particular overpass just a month ago without incident. >> it is frightening to see so many incidents of violence that endanger members of my community and other human rights advocates , continuing care san francisco executive director zahara ballou says there have been six similar incidents around the bay over the past six months, including a knife wielding man shredding a pro-palestine banner above the 880 freeway last december. we are facing a 30 year high in anti-muslim and anti-palestinian hate. >> jews have also been targeted. this nine foot menorah was desecrated at oakland's lake merritt also in december. >> we found pieces all over. it seems like it was chopped up, burnt. >> redwood city chp says they're investigating this. as the country and culture continue struggling with violent reactions to peaceful expressions of free speech. >> this issue is important enough to me and i think to us as americans that like, we need

♪ bmo ♪ two dozen new fair inspectors after a surge in fare evaders. ktvu christian captain has more now on the new plan. >> muni carries more than 440,000 weekday riders through the streets of san francisco, while the majority of passengers pay their way, muni estimates that as many as 1 in 5 riders doesn't pay. passengers say that doesn't surprise them. >> yeah. you know, in san francisco, everybody's trying to get their way out there on the bus. you go any other city, you

got to pay. >> sfmta says before the pandemic, about 12% of passengers didn't pay. now the agency says about 20% of riders skip out on paying. the sfmta says it is in the process of bringing two dozen new fare inspectors online who will hit the road july 1st, riding transit and making sure everyone has proof of payment. >> what we've seen in the data is a very, very strong correlation between the presence of fare inspectors and people paying their correct fare. >> the sfmta says fares account for about a quarter of its income. >> we can't sustain muni service without people paying their fair fare, it is about a quarter of our operators salary. if we're not able to bring fare compliance up a bit, we will have no choice but to reduce muni service to keep the new fare inspectors safe. >> they work in groups of three and can use radios to call for help if they see a potentially dangerous person or activity. >> the fare inspectors are a

huge part of our safety program. they're very presence on the vehicle helps to make sure that everything stays chill. >> the sfmta says seeing people not pay can make other riders think they don't have to pay either. but the agency says a lot of those riding who don't appear to be paying have in fact paid for their rides. if they have the muni app, for example, they don't need to tag in like clipper card users. and remember, there are a lot of those who ride for free, like the kids, the elderly, and the disabled. in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> oakland firefighters rescued and injured hiker over the weekend. firefighters responded yesterday to joaquin miller park in the oakland hills. these photos were shared out there on social media. they say the hiker was suffering from a leg injury. just about a mile from the trailhead. firefighters managed to find the hiker and then brought them to a waiting waiting medics. no details yet on the severity of the injury. >> an east bay family is in mourning tonight after a five year old boy drowned near bethel island over the weekend. a diver

found the boy in the water inside a cove saturday afternoon. it's believed he had been in the water for about 15 minutes. rescuers performed cpr and rushed the child to the hospital, where he died. authorities say the boy made his way to the water through a backyard next to the shoreline. >> i haven't really noticed whether there could be better security measures, to tell you the truth, i think it's, you know, most of the most of the most of it is really up to the homeowners to sort of make sure their particular areas are secure. >> the boy was reportedly visiting his grandparents on the island at the time. >> california drivers will soon be seen even higher prices there at the gas pump, as ktvu is, tom vacar reports. a new increase to the gas tax is scheduled to take effect in july. >> it's a tale of two gas stations two blocks apart. the cash price at the 76 station in orinda is 5.39 a gallon, but at the mash gas and food, it's 489

a half buck cheaper for the folks we met that makes mash where they spend their cash. >> it's at least $0.50 cheaper here. >> over the years we've covered this station. it has always had a good audience, and simply because they try to pass the savings on to consumers, not themselves, there are several, low income senior buildings, and it really helps us out in even though we live in orinda, we're low income seniors. >> i'm selective where i get my gas from, for one thing. like, i come to this gas station going back and forth through fiddletown and san francisco. >> one man says it's all about too much government. one example, a coming carbon tax that might add as much as $0.50 a gallon, possibly next year, to fight climate change. >> people that are running the state right now, and the regulations associated with the gas prices, and i just i don't like it. >> the nationwide average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3, and $0.62. $0.08 more than a

year ago, california seniors average price 529 $0.49. more than a year ago, the average bay area price is 545 $0.59. more than a year ago, using the current bay area price, a round trip drive to south lake tahoe from oakland is 364 miles. an average californians car now gets 31 miles a gallon, the best in the nation, but that round trip tahoe adventure is going to cost you $64 in regular gas. and that's at least seven bucks more than a year ago. and 800 mile round trip to disneyland will cost $140 for regular gas. that's at least $15 more than a year ago, but is that enough to seriously affect summer travel? >> i think a lot of us will travel no matter what. we just start to weigh the price of flying versus driving. i mean, if it's close enough, people are going to fly. i think i know i would. >> the triple a projects 43.8

million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the memorial day holiday period. now that's a 4% increase over last year and very close to matching 2005 record of 44 million memorial day travelers. tom vacar ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, checking on the weather. we had a nice day today. these are the temperatures that will show up on your screen in just a minute from today that were logged as high temperatures. we saw numbers in the 70s and low 80s, which was a little bit cooler than what we had yesterday, which was some low 80s, even mid 80s. tomorrow. go back to that. we're going to warm up a degree or two. so it's going to be slight fluctuations. this week throughout the week, a live picture shot or lights camera shot pardon me. and this is out by antioch in pittsburgh. and you can see the clouds off in the sierra nevada. the clouds that are up there. and you can see the traffic on the highway and the green grass starting to turn a little brown as we move

into the summer months. there's the fog right now, and you can see it already shooting. this is not the model. this is a live fog satellite imagery. and you can see the fog shooting all the way over to berkeley right now, and then up into the point reyes area as well, up towards inverness. bunch of fog. it's a deeper marine layer and that's what will that's what we'll get to push inland and the push inland comes on the heels of the stronger winds right to spring winds and the winds blow and the ocean upwells and gets colder and the fog comes back in. and so you get a bit of a feedback loop. and that is summer. and that is what's happening right now. what's not summer right now. but we're kind of in that we're in that slot, if you will. so not in mind we're going to be looking at winds next few days in the mid 20s along the coast and at the airports like sfo and oakland. and then we're going to be looking at temperatures that will be a little warmer and then a little cooler. so it's going to be a very nice week ahead. air quality will start to tick a little bit of a hit as the high pressure sort of stagnates. the

atmosphere and the vertical motion of the air mixing out the pollutants and such. so we'll start to notice more typical summer or late spring air quality. in terms of the pollens. the pollens are a thing. the tree pollens still and the grasses and weeds are right there. so you'll be noticing them. i'll see you back here with the full forecast coming up. >> i think. i feel them. thanks, bill. sneezing over here much of minnesota remains under an air quality alert today due to wildfire smoke that's drifted across the us border from canada . more than 100 wildfires are burning in canada, mostly in the provinces of british columbia and alberta. drone footage showed the minneapolis skyline obscured by all the haze from the wildfires. air quality officials in minnesota issued an alert yesterday saying the air quality index was at a level considered unhealthy for everyone. still ahead tonight, see how oakland's new police chief, floyd mitchell, started his first week on the job, and michael cohen takes the witness stand in donald trump's hush money trial. details on today's testimony from the prosecution's star witness

first day as an oakland police chief. >> monday is the first look at floyd mitchell as oakland's police chief. for weeks, he's been meeting with opd leaders to learn about the department and its programs. he spoke to the next class of police recruits waiting for their day in academy. >> i've been in this profession probably longer than most of you have been alive. >> chief mitchell replaces former chief lauren armstrong, fired last year after the mayor's office flagged issues of handling cases of misconduct. an independent investigation cleared armstrong of any wrongdoing, but mayor tao said his attitude during the investigation made her less confident he could handle the job. chief mitchell takes over the agency at a time where public safety is oakland's number one priority. >> i've spent the last few days attending some lineups to meet my officers. i'm going to spend the rest of this week attending different meetings to get brought up to speed on several different things going on within

the oakland police department and within this community. >> robberies continue to be on the rise. >> my boyfriend's car just got broken into last week. >> however, this could be a turning point for the city. the mayor's office reporting homicides, assaults, and burglaries are down in oakland and over the weekend, 12 new police officers were welcomed into the department. after graduating from the academy, a total now of 716 officers more than 70 on medical leave. the department is now considered fully staffed. one man says hiring a chief at a town might be a challenge. >> you're going on paperwork, you're going on what somebody then told you or passing on to you. but if you were down here in the roots with the other, with the people, you would know the peoples. and so you know how everybody respond. >> the police department is still working on finalizing a date for the chief's public swearing in. >> thank you for having me as your police chief, and i look forward to seeing you in person. >> reporting in oakland. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> and today we did speak to

oakland city council member noel gallo, who says the new police chief has his work cut out for him. i have never seen oaklin at this level when it comes to public safety, and for me, the most important position in any city, any government is the police chief position because public safety, it is number one. >> it is a number one priority of any city, any county, any state, in any country. >> councilman gallo says he would have preferred the mayor have hired somebody local, but says he plans to work with the new chief and also hopes he can gain the trust and confidence of the community. >> the giants are looking to defend the bay as the team hosts the dodgers at oracle park tonight, but some ticket providers are saying the dodgers already have a slight edge coming into this series. vivid seats fan forecast projects over the next three games, 51% of the seats at oracle park will be filled with dodgers fans. this

joseph roberts of second degree murder for killing his girlfriend, rachel elizabeth amani buckner, the 27 year old law student was killed in their pleasanton apartment last year. roberts is expected to be sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. >> some members of the bay area's islamic community are outraged after a pro-palestinian activist was confronted by a man and subjected to a tirade. it happened last week while they put out banners on an overpass above highway 101, in menlo park. the highway patrol says it is investigating the attack. >> gas prices in california are expected to get even higher, with the summer driving season about to get underway later in the summer. an additional two

cent per gallon tax is set to go into effect that happens in july. the average gas price in the bay area right now is more than $5 a gallon. >> you are watching ktvu fox two news at 630. today was a significant day in the criminal hush money trial of former president donald trump. the state's star witness, former trump attorney michael cohen, took the stand testifying against his one time boss. ktvu is jana katsuyama has more on today's proceedings. >> michael cohen, the former attorney for donald trump, now a star witness against him, took the stand in new york monday. >> cohen testified that donald trump was involved in the plan to suppress stories of alleged sexual affairs in order to avoid harm to his 2016 presidential candidacy. cohen testified, quote, what i was doing was at the direction of and benefit of mr. trump and later said, quote, everything required. mr. trump's sign off. cohen said that in the months before the 2016 presidential election, trump directed him to handle secret hush money payments to former

playmate karen mcdougal and star stormy daniels, who both alleged they had sexual affairs with trump. cohen testified about a secret recording where he said trump asked about paying david pecker, the national enquirer publisher, in cash, to buy and suppress mcdougal's story. >> so i'm i'm all over that, and i spoke to alan about it. when it comes time for the financing, which will be what financing we'll have to pay you. so no, no, no, no no no no, i got. >> cohen said trump knew about the plans to conceal the payments by using fabricated bank accounts and reimbursements . prosecutors presented documents including a first republic bank account, which cohen testified was used for the $130,000 payout to stormy daniels. trump denies the affairs and any knowledge of the payout cover ups, saying before court that he only knew of legal expenses. for cohen. >> it's marked down in the book, quote, legal expense is perfectly marked down. >> the defense raised few

objections during the testimony and is expected to cast doubt on cohen's credibility later this week. cohen served prison time for lying to congress and for federal charges involving the hush money cover ups. but his testimony monday follows a careful setup by prosecutors, according to uc law professor david levine. in this case, you've got extraordinary written documentation, you've got all of those ledger entries, you've got the checks signed by mr. trump, you've got evidence from other disinterested witnesses that the checks were written in new york and were fedex down to washington and then sent back. >> michael cohen is scheduled to be back on the witness stand again on tuesday for a second day of testimony from the newsroom jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news and a new poll shows donald trump still leading president biden in key battleground states, despite the former president spending more time in court than out there on the campaign trail. >> the new york times siena college poll has trump edging out biden in arizona, georgia,

michigan, nevada and pennsylvania among the swing states, president biden is ahead only in wisconsin. analysts say trump has been gaining support in key groups that historically vote for democrats. young black and latino voters. >> he's winning in five of the six swing states, including way outside the margin of error in three of them. i mean, that puts him in shooting distance of 270 electoral votes. if he wins those states later this week, president biden scheduled to participate in several events that honor black americans, including delivering the commencement address at morehouse, the historically black liberal arts college in the city of atlanta. >> vice president kamala harris got the attention of a crowd today while speaking to the asian pacific american institute for congressional studies. during a conversation with the host, harris used an expletive to emphasize her point on pushing barriers and being a leader. >> we have to know. know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open. sometimes they won't, and then

you need to kick that door down. >> today's event coincides with asian american and pacific islander heritage month. harris is the first south asian and black american woman to be elected vice president. >> television host judge judy filed a defamation lawsuit today against the parent company of the national enquirer and in touch weekly. the judge says she is suing over a story that she says falsely claims she was trying to help the menendez brothers get a retrial. the menendez brothers were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, in beverly hills, the judge has said. has had issues with the national enquirer in the past. in 2017, the newspaper retracted and apologized for stories that falsely claim she suffered from alzheimer's disease. >> nearly two months after a cargo ship smashed into baltimore's francis scott key bridge, crews have begun demolishing what's left of the debris. fox news jared halperin

tells us the coast guard now estimates the port's permanent channel could reopen later this month. >> crews in baltimore using controlled explosions to break a part of a massive portion of the collapsed francis scott key bridge on monday. >> the 500 foot long span sits on top of a cargo ship that crashed into a support column in march, killing six construction workers. the vessel's 21 member crew remains on board during demolition. >> they are necessary to keep the ship safe and operational if something were to happen. they are the in the best place to actually fight a fire on board the ship. >> the port of baltimore has been closed to most maritime traffic since the accident. coast guard officials say after demolition, they plan to refloat and remove the cargo ship in about two days, with the goal of fully reopening the port's permanent channel by the end of the month. >> there were some who, when we were here weeks ago, looked at the complexity of this operation

and said this is going to take months. we've been able to get it done in a matter of weeks. >> in the weeks after the bridge collapsed, the federal government approved $60 million in emergency funding. but there are still questions about who should pay for rebuilding efforts. last month, a group of lawmakers unveiled legislation to make sure maryland taxpayers are not on the hook for some of the construction costs, those responsible and those insurance claims will help to make sure the federal taxpayer gets the relief from those responsible. the house committee on transportation and infrastructure holds a hearing wednesday about the response to the collapse in washington. jared halperin, ktvu, fox two news us airlines are suing to block the biden administration from requiring greater transparency over fees that they charge their passengers. >> american delta united, along with three other carriers, accused the transportation department of going beyond its authority by attempting to

regulate private business operations. the lawsuit also argues a new role would confuse consumers by giving them too much information during the ticket buying process, the white house says it will defend the rule as part of an ongoing crackdown on junk fees. >> triple a is predicting close to 44 million people will be traveling for the memorial day weekend. that is a 4% increase since last year, and closely matches 2005 record travel. it is estimated 38 million will travel by car, while airports are expected to see 3.5 million travelers that weekend. experts say drivers leaving thursday or friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters and travelers returning sunday or monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak. >> police recruiting on the rise in some departments across the country coming up, the agency is finding more success growing the ranks and why. >> san jose's mayor, matt mahan, says his city has been able to bounce back in the post-pandemic recovery, and a quick reminder that you can get ktvu on demand

behind the product. you want to invest to make it better. >> and we've been seeing these investments firsthand. k-9 unit here is going to show us an apprehension to a dangerous perpetrator disobeying commands. and as you see, he has a fake gun in his hand as well. ej, the dog just graduated two years ago, clearly hard at work. now this police department has actually seen some nypd officers come over from new york city, which is just about an hour away . the commissioner tells us that they're willing to give up rank and start over because of the respect and support the police receive here. so sworn officer numbers, they are up across the country on average, but it's small and medium departments like the ones here in nassau county that are doing the best big departments like new york, still struggling. they're about 5% below where they were pre-pandemic in nassau county. i'm madison alworth, this is moose fox business. >> a new report says downtown san jose is one of three cities leading the country when it comes to post-pandemic downtown recovery. it comes in just after

will stop at west oakland, macarthur, pleasant hill, el cerrito del norte, bay fair, and dublin stations. the special trains will get race participants to the embarcadero just before 7:00 in the morning. bart parking is free and the 12 k race starts at 8:00 sunday morning. >> all right, beautiful day today. it's going to be nice again tomorrow. temperatures will come up a little bit. they came down a little today. but this whole week is going to be up down up down. subtle changes 2 or 3 degrees up 2 or 3 degrees down. fog remains at the coast. they'll be night and morning fog and we'll see temperatures. it was cooler today by a couple of degrees, but we'll see temperatures generally a little warmer than these. so low upper 70s to low 80s to mid 80s as we go through the week. and you'll see that represented in the five day forecast and a live picture outside, you can kind of see a little bit of haze in the atmosphere, the fog. you don't pick up here because we're looking more towards the east there you pick up on the fog and you can see it sitting right off the coast and pushing inland. this is right now. it's not the model, it's actually the, live or the live satellite imagery. i

can show you the model then talking about that expansion of the marine layer and then it's intrusion. this is tomorrow morning. so that marine layer picks up, pushes inland, gets pretty far inland. tomorrow morning, does the same thing it did this afternoon. and then wednesday morning a little bit of an intrusion. not as quite as much. so a little warmer on wednesday right. because you don't have much fog to work with. and then thursday you saw that big push of fog. so more fog. so perhaps a couple of degrees cooler. and it's that fluctuation, those fluctuations, the deeper marine layer further inland, shallower marine layer and not as far inland representing a cool down or a warm up. and that's how the week and it's subtle like 2 or 3 degrees. we're not expecting anything real hot, anything real cool. the breezes are doing exactly what they're supposed to do for this time of year. the right now, temperatures show the microclimates lining up the greens representing 60s and low 70s, and then all the way up away from the influence of the coastal marine area. you got mild to warm temperatures into the 80s. cooler right now in
