beautiful. yeah, it's all over social media if you haven't seen it. and guess what? it's going to happen again tonight. maybe even better. so good to have you here this morning. thank you. i'm frank mallicoat. let's talk to rosemary. more on the lights and our beautiful weather as well. >> yes. i'm so envious. you got to see it between 11 p.m. 2 a.m. the best time for the bay area. we are waking up with a little bit of cloud cover. we might have a little bit more cloud cover for tonight. so if you are planning on, you know, taking a peek or trying to see those lights, make sure that you go inland giving you a live look here over san francisco where we've got the clouds back as forecast along the coast and now inside the bay. my drive into oakland, i can see the clouds overhead 55 degrees right now in oakland, 53 for san francisco. still holding on to some heat inland. east bay 64 for you, brentwood, but but we are cooling things down as we get into the afternoon today. mid 60s expected along the coastline to about 90 degrees inland.

that's going to be for some of our warmer spots. we are going to drop temperatures by a few degrees as we get into mother's day sunday. a better look at the current conditions and what we can expect for the weekend coming up. >> all right, mary, thank you. happening today, the campus wide commencement for uc berkeley at cal memorial stadium. thousands of students are set to receive their diplomas this morning amid pro-palestinian protests on campus. ktvu almanor quintana joins us live from our newsroom with more. amanda >> yes, well good morning. this day is even more special because for many of these students graduating today, this is their first big graduation ceremony because the pandemic canceled a lot of the high school graduation ceremonies, we saw in 2020. so today they finally get to celebrate this big milestone and honor their accomplishments. this graduation is still happening today, although protests surrounding the israel-hamas war have shut down ceremonies at other college campuses across the country, such as at usc. but students we spoke to at berkeley, they say they're not worried about that

here. they say protesters on campus have been pretty peaceful, and they're actually trying to accommodate protesters and listen to them. >> if something happens at graduation, i don't believe it would be violent. i think it would be. i would it would happen in a manner that is perfectly appropriate. and if someone feels strongly enough to express that during their graduation, then it should be heard. >> in a statement, uc berkeley spokesperson dan mogulof said berkeley graduation ceremonies. have been venues for all sorts of protests for many years. this year, like every year in the past, our efforts will focus on ensuring the ceremony can be successfully held and on supporting the ability of graduating students, their friends and families to safely enjoy and take part in an incredibly meaningful day. there are still protesters on campus. there's an encampment at sproul plaza with students rallying for the uc system to divest from companies that profit from the war. but students say that they have remained peaceful, peaceful. yesterday morning at the law school graduation, there

was a digital billboard listing names of uc berkeley law students that the pro-israel group accuracy in media has accused of anti-semitism. now, some felt putting those names up was inappropriate at a celebration. there were also reportedly some chants during that law school graduation. but today, overall, students, they say they're not concerned about protesters. they're excited and they're grateful that they actually get to have a graduation ceremony. that ceremony will start at 1030 this morning. live in the newsroom. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, amanda, thank you. uc berkeley canceled a u.s. senate race debate due to safety concerns amid those current campus protests. the debate between representative adam schiff and his gop rival, steve garvey, was scheduled to take place at the school in the fall. university officials called off the debate after determining they will not be able to ensure the event will be safe and civil. this comes after weeks of unrest at the campus where a pro-palestine encampment has taken over sproul plaza. time

now is 705. >> ongoing protests at a private liberal arts college in l.a. county forced the school to postpone and relocate a graduation ceremony. pomona college moved the main commencement off campus as protesters camped near the graduation stage. school officials say. graduation ceremonies will not be open to the public and proper safety measures will be taken. pro-palestinian protesters are calling for total divestment from israel. they say they won't move until the demands are met and protests are happening on college campuses nationwide. at the university of pennsylvania, officers in riot gear arrested more than two dozen people. police charge students and teachers with trespassing after warning people to leave. and at the massachusetts institute of technology, mit, nearly a dozen students all arrested as a similar scene played out there. they had hundreds of riot gear officers, state troopers, all to come down for a student encampment that was peaceful

throughout its time here. this comes just a day after a tense standoff at the university of arizona. police had to use tear gas to clear a pro-palestine encampment before the school's commencement ceremony took place. >> firefighters are investigating a fire that burned through a church in west oakland. this happened around 730 last night at 27th and west streets. video here showing smoke billowing from the building. this fire started in a single family residence next door and then spread to the church. fire officials say the pastor was inside when the fire started, but he was able to make it out okay. no other injuries have been reported. >> crews did an outstanding job of keeping the fire to this building, and half of the church . it really could have gotten a whole city block going had they not reacted so quickly. >> other parts of the church building were severely damaged and the neighboring home partially collapsed. the cause is under investigation. >> well known business owner in oakland says he's considering closing his restaurant for

several reasons, including two early morning break ins. nelson german, the owner and the chef at almanor kitchen and bar in uptown oakland, says someone broke into his business around 440 and 630 in the morning. he says the thief stole a large amount of top shelf liquor and kitchen equipment. german thinks this is the same person who stole from his restaurant back in november. >> people know me. i'm always a positive person who always smiling and staying upbeat, encouraging others, this is the first time i feel down. first time like i just can't really smile. >> in addition to these early morning burglaries. german says he's considering closing the kitchen and bar due to rising costs. he says if the restaurant doesn't have a successful weekend, it will be difficult to remain open. >> this morning, still no answers for parents and teachers at new horizons private school in berkeley. the school abruptly

closing friday after more than 20 years in operation. ktvu alice swartz spoke with staff members who say they are still waiting to get paid for several months of work. >> we were all shocked, you know, both of my kids were crying. all the parents, everybody was crying and really upset about this. >> parent sheena verma has two students here at new horizons. she said it was an email sent wednesday night from the principal. that's how she learned that the school is bankrupt. and friday would be its last day. >> we were shocked. about two months ago, we abruptly found out that some teachers were not being paid, we found out that like the lease had not been paid, the principal, victor dawson, hasn't been on site since march 27th and none of the bills have been paid, including payroll. >> but he's collected tuition for next year about 20 parents prepaid about $14,000 each. angela eggleston has been involved with new horizons since the 90s. >> it has been a very long semester as vice principal. >> she's tried to keep spirits

up, but it's been very challenging. >> when information was brought to light about building lease not being current, about the staff not being paid, we did lose some students. yeah, we probably lost about 20, 22 students. so we were probably right now we were down to like 78. >> rafi has taught math and science to middle schoolers here for the last year. >> so february, march, april, may. so it'll be a total of almost eight eight checks. >> he hasn't been paid in four months, but like some other teachers, he keeps showing up. >> we're supposed to get paid today, but basically all our checks. but i checked my account and nothing's there. >> miss angie says the students are struggling. >> our students are resilient. but that doesn't mean they aren't hurting, i hear from parents that they're having anxiety. their, they're crying at night. they don't understand because it's just so different

than what they had experienced. their full time here. we're a small community. >> we tried to reach victor dawson, the principal and owner of new horizons, by phone to no luck. however, there is a wage claim filed on behalf of the teachers and staff who are yet to be paid. as for some families, they're looking around to see where their students are going to go next fall in newark. alice wurtz, ktvu, fox two news. >> governor newsom's revised budget is confronting california's deficit head on how the proposed cuts could impact the state's workforce and vital programs. >> it's really important for people to realize that this is not a laser light show, but something quite subtle. get away from city lights and you'd have to have a good view of the of the horizon toward the north. >> what a show! a rare solar storm spectacle sweeping across the nation and right here in the bay area. all the science behind the bay area's chance to see the northern lights and the impact it could have coming your way.

some sobering numbers in response to california's growing budget deficit, ktvu jana katsuyama tells us the governor's proposed cuts will affect the state's workforce, along with more than 250 programs. >> as governor gavin newsom announced his revised budget friday, saying the state is facing back to back deficits in the next two years. >> we are facing a $27.6 billion challenge next year to my point about a multi year strategy, we project a $28 million shortfall. >> newsom's proposal for next

year is a $288 billion budget. much lower than his previous $310 billion budget proposal. it includes cuts in services to about 260 state programs, along with a dip into the state's rainy day funds and an 8% reduction in the state's workforce by eliminating the unfilled job posts, plus or -10,000 vacant positions. >> those positions are being determined in real time at every agency and department. we want a leaner government, leaner government, streamlined government, the governor says. >> the state's progressive tax system is vulnerable to swings in the stock market, so tax revenue came in below projected levels. >> there are areas where core services are being impacted, but the vast majority are being protected. existing services provided to existing people, newsom says his proposal includes one time cuts to programs such as cal works employment services, behavioral health for youth and water

storage improvements meant to help address drought. >> he also listed ongoing cuts, including a reduction in state and local prison housing, which he says would save the state $80 million a year. >> we are proposing to shut down at 13 prisons an additional 46 housing units that would reduce the census of beds by just shy of 4600, the nonprofit california budget and policy center has one big concern there are no significant increases in revenue either in the short term or to address multiyear budget challenges. >> and we think as long as he leaves those revenue proposals off the table, he's impeding his own ability to reach solutions to provide a california for all. >> newsom also proposed delays in program expansions to food assistance and child care aid, as well as tax credits for low income young children and foster youth. lawmakers have until june 15th to pass a budget in the

newsroom. jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news meantime, governor newsom is vowing to continue to fully protect funding for california's schools despite the state's budget deficit. >> the governor says his proposed cuts will not affect the plan that he's already set in motion to provide more money for students from kindergarten through high school, but it's still not clear how the governor's updated budget plan will affect state funded colleges. all right, scientists say a rare and severe solar storm is getting stronger and expected to hit its peak later today. and there is a good chance that skywatchers here in the bay area could get their best look at these so-called northern lights in more than 20 years, scientists also warning though this is the same solar storm that could disrupt power and communication systems across the country, they can take out satellites. >> they can disrupt communications, and in extreme events can even disrupt power grids on earth's surface. >> scientists say the solar storm could also affect migratory birds and bees, who rely on the earth's magnetic

field to navigate. meantime some astronomers say those hoping to view the northern lights in the bay area should head to a remote area after the sun goes down. tonight >> it's really important for people to realize that this is not a laser light show, but something quite subtle, just curtains of reddish light that might be visible in a very dark sky. so to see it well, you'd have to get away from city lights and you'd have to have a good view of the of the horizon toward the north. >> the professor also says a smartphone camera might be able to capture tonight's light show far better than the naked eye and the best time to see this aurora borealis is 1 to 4 in the morning. he's actually right because i took a picture with my cell phone last night, and that's how i got the pink glow on the image. >> but really, from the naked eye, could you see it? >> i could see it. it was faint. it was better with my cell phone. >> yeah. a lot of people back east. i'm. my social media is getting flooded with. it was just incredible in new hampshire, in massachusetts and whatnot. but to get it here is

of us will enjoy the clear skies as we get into the evening hours along the coast and the clouds and the fog returning to the bay . also pushing through the delta, which is an indication that our onshore breeze will be joining us for the afternoon as well. if you are thinking about getting out to watch those northern lights tonight into tomorrow morning, maybe away from the coast and the bay is going to be your best opportunity, as we do expect some cloud cover out there. here's a look at the afternoon for mother's day. partly cloudy skies at the coast and mostly sunny for the rest. temperatures this morning 55 degrees in san francisco, already mid 60s in brentwood, so you never really cooled off after a very warm afternoon yesterday and going back into the upper 80s to low 90s for today, touching 90 degrees for concord as well as antioch in the north bay, upper 80s for napa and around the bay, 71 in san francisco to 81 in hayward. we've got some nice warm weather out there. yesterday i was at jacqueline square. it was amazing. here's a

look at your extended forecast where we do have temperatures dropping off a little bit more for your mother's day, upper 80s for our inland cities to low 60s at the coast, and then monday into tuesday, temperatures are actually going to well, be at their coolest on monday. we begin to rebound on tuesday very comfortable weather, low 60s at the coast, low 70s around the bay and warm for our inland cities. back to you i guess. >> i haven't seen it 90 in a while. we will take it. well, a new study is revealing how long it would take low and moderate income students here in california to recoup the money they spent on a college education at a cal matters analysis of the data found that the average time needed for a student earn enough extra money to cover those costs is about two years. if they attended a public institution and a little over three years at nonprofit private colleges in california takes almost 13 years for students to recoup the cost of an education at for profit colleges. here in our state. and

rejecting at&t s request to withdraw as the state's carrier of last resort, at&t is required to offer landline service to a large part of california, but it says dwindling demand plus increased costs means that just doesn't make financial sense anymore. state officials denied at&t request to stop providing landlines because the company failed to demonstrate they were replacement providers willing to step in to provide that same service. >> nurses at san francisco's public hospitals will be voting next week about whether they should go on strike. the nurses say staffing levels are

extremely low and patient care is at risk. union reps have been in negotiations with the department of public health since february, and they say the city has rejected all of their staffing proposals. the vote will take place from tuesday through friday. public health officials say they've hired 166 new nurses since december, bowing under a new investigation. >> now, this time over the statement it made about its own safety practices. the securities and exchange commission is investigating whether the plane maker violated sec rules by misleading investors following that mid-air door plug mishap on that alaska airlines flight. all this comes as a former quality manager for a major supplier of boeing 737 max planes claims he was pressured to downplay problems. he found during inspections, and mercedes-benz is pulling away from going all electric for the near future due to lack of sales. >> the company says it's going to make both gas and electric cars well into the 2030s,

they feel it's going to be peaceful today. overall they're not concerned and they are just excited. they're excited to have this ceremony today and get to celebrate with all of their friends and family. live in berkeley. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> thank you. amanda. a bay area mother from mexico, is facing deportation. immigrants rights groups rallied outside of senator laphonza butler's office in san francisco. they want the senator to step in and help keep this mother here in the united states. organizers say she was arrested for returning to the u.s. after being deported. they say she came back because she has three children here in the united states and feared for her own safety in mexico. >> but because she had a previous deportation order, ice, basically issues a reinstatement order and so a reinstatement order has severe consequences because it prevents people like flores who have experienced harm from applying for relief, like asylum.

>> the group wants senator butler to urge federal authorities to withdraw the reinstatement order. they say the woman should be allowed to plead her case to stay here in the united states. in court. >> a dozen officers have now joined the ranks of the oakland police department. they graduated from the police academy friday, receiving honors and awards after finishing six months of training. these new officers are a diverse group that speaks several languages and with the incoming graduates, the department now has a total of 716 sworn officers. >> that is a reality. i could go out there in my very first day on patrol and my life would be taken, but that's the choice i'm making, and it's actually a choice that makes me want to do it more, because i'm willing to put my life on the line to help anyone i can. and if that means that they can go back home to their families. >> the city's incoming chief, floyd mitchell, was at the ceremony, by the way. he will officially be taking over the ranks today. >> the un general assembly has voted by a wide margin to keep

palestine's new rights and privileges, and it's calling on the un security council to consider palestine's request to become a formal member of the united nations un general assembly president. speaking shortly after yesterday's vote, dennis francis says all options need to be considered in an effort to end that fighting in gaza. >> if anything, the horrendous events of the last seven months have only hastened the urgency of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peaceful solution to the situation in the middle east. >> just last month, the united states vetoed a widely backed security council resolution that would have paved the way for full un membership for palestine, and the us deputy ambassador made it perfectly clear the biden administration opposes that new resolution. >> happening today in san francisco, a vigil will be held

to honor the lives of journalists killed in the war between israel and hamas. today's vigil is in honor of a palestinian american journalist who was killed two years ago today by the idf while she was on assignment in the west bank. the committee to protect journalists says 97 journalists and media workers have been killed since the war began on october 7th. more deaths are currently under investigation. today's event begins at 4 p.m. at the ferry building. >> starting today, writers in the east bay should expect some delays. construction happening in south alameda county, between union city and south fremont. free busses will be for provided rather to riders during that stretch. the green line is closed all weekend, by the way. bart says riders should expect delays between 20 to 40 minutes in those work zones. and in santa clara county, workers are nearing completion of a massive tunnel which will help protect communities downstream of the anderson reservoir in the event of heavy rain. >> yeah, it's all part of an

overall project to completely replace the 1950s era dam, which the federal government says is at risk of collapse in an earthquake. ktvu mark sayer takes a look at the project that it is hard to forget. >> these scenes from 2017, when firefighters and boats were rescuing residents who lived along coyote creek in san jose's rock creek community. the heavy rains that year overwhelmed anderson reservoir above morgan hill, sending water uncontrolled over the dam spillway. in 2020, the federal government ordered the entire reservoir drained due to seismic safety concerns. all of which brings us to this massive tunnel now being built under the reservoir. >> so this new tunnel will help us keep the reservoir empty as we approach the larger anderson dam seismic retrofit project, which will include a rebuilding of the dam embankment itself. >> when complete, this tunnel will be 750ft long, and it will have the capacity to drain anderson lake reservoir, which is just above us 15 times faster than what is possible with the current dam.

>> in the end, when we're completed with the project, we'll be used as an emergency outlet only. so it's a it's a much larger amount of water that we'll be able to release that we would only have to do in an emergency, such as an earthquake or another, you know, flood event or something like that. a large storm, this new tunnel, which could fit two lanes of vehicle traffic, will serve two purposes. >> first, it will allow the complete drainage of anderson reservoir, which currently still holds about 3% of its total capacity. that will allow the current dam. originally built in the 1950s, to be torn down once the new dam is built, the tunnel will provide far more capacity to quickly remove water from the reservoir, and if this project had been in place in 2017, we would not have seen the flooding we did there. the cost of the overall project, including the new dam, is about $2.3 billion. >> anderson dam will create thousands and thousands of jobs. these jobs are also pathways for apprenticeship programs for women, for veterans and for youth. >> anderson reservoir is by far the largest in santa clara

reports from san francisco with reaction from target shoppers. >> mega retailer target has said it will not be putting out pride related merchandise and marketing in some locations this year, after the company faced a backlash and boycott over pride displays and merchandise last year. the retailer didn't specify where it would be scaling back on pride, but in a statement said it would be, quote, offering a collection of products including adult apparel and home and food and beverage items, curated based on consumer feedback. the collection will be available on target.com and in select stores based on historical sales performance. gulnar tambat, professor of marketing at the lam family college of business at san francisco state university, says the company is trying to appeal to both sides. >> they are rather choosing a middle position, right? they're trying to play it safe. you know, they are still going to sell certain things in certain stores, but not in some other stores, she says. >> ultimately, the company is going to have to pick a side.

today, thousands of people will head to cal memorial stadium to celebrate all undergraduate and graduate students. ktvu amanda quintana is live at uc berkeley campus this morning on why this commencement is even more special for the class of 2024. good morning amanda. >> good morning christina. so when you think back four years ago, the students were graduating high school. a lot of them had their canceled graduation for high school. so this is really a big deal. one graduate i just spoke to said her high school graduation was one of those drive by ones, so she's excited to actually have a ceremony today. so it's going to start at 1030 here. they finally get to celebrate their accomplishments. they get to do all of this in front of their family and friends. so it's really an exciting day. this graduation of course, still happening, although some across the country are not because of protests surrounding the israel-hamas war, they have shut down ceremonies at some college campuses, such as usc. but students we spoke to here at berkeley are not worried about that. they say protesters on

campus have been pretty peaceful, and they're actually trying to accommodate protest and listen to them. i know the media might be talking about these protests happening, and it's disrupting life, but that's one part of it. >> and like, they have a right to do that and they absolutely should. as long as things don't get out of hand like they do at some places, it's fine. and we haven't seen that happen here. so i think overall it's been a pretty peaceful situation. >> in a statement, uc berkeley spokesperson dan mogulof said berkeley graduation ceremonies have been venues for all sorts of protests for many years. this year, like every year in the past, our efforts will focus on ensuring the ceremony can be successfully held and on supporting the ability of graduating students, their friends and families to safely enjoy and take part in an incredibly meaningful day. there are still protesters here on campus. there's an encampment of pro-palestinian protesters at sproul plaza. demand the uc system divest from companies that are profiting from the war, but students say that they have

remained peaceful. yesterday at the law school graduation, there was a digital billboard outside listing names of uc berkeley law students that the pro-israel group accuracy in media has accused of anti-semitism. some felt putting those names up was inappropriate at that celebration. there were also reportedly some chants at that law school graduation. there is, of course, because this is such a big event. there is a large police presence here in berkeley. some roads are closed off. as we were driving here, we saw a lot of police, so that's something to be aware of as well. but of course today overall people are excited. they're excited to celebrate. they're excited that they actually get to have a graduation ceremony live in berkeley. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> amanda, thank you. uc berkeley canceled a us senate race today due to safety concerns amid current campus protests. the debate between representative adam schiff and his gop rival, steve garvey, was scheduled to take place at the school this fall. university

month pilot program aimed at increasing the number of asian americans working in mental health. five professionals already graduated from the program this week, we spoke with leaders at the clinic about why this grant is important, so it's great that people are coming in now. >> what we want to work on is really building up that workforce. but with our community, you know, given the language barriers, given the cultural nuances, it's really important that our mental health professionals really are aligned with the communities they serve. and that's why we were so excited about this program. >> the state's department of health care access and information reports asian americans make up 15% of california's population, but only 8.4% of licensed behavioral health care workers are asian american and pacific islander. >> heritage month coverage continues with a story out of san francisco. there is a one of a kind gift shop and bookstore in the city's chinatown neighborhood that celebrates the asian american experience.

other generation before them. a transunion report shows the average young american has a credit card balance of nearly $3,000, a 26% jump from a decade ago. >> they're really dealing with the issue of the rent to income ratio. it's out of control. rent is too expensive for them. and so the thing that they've got to realize is they can't depend on credit cards. right they're being marketed to they're seeing on social media. this is the life that you should have. >> younger people with larger debt falling behind quicker on credit card payments, with some relying on their family members for help if they can't make ends meet. >> we want americans if they have debt. we want you to focus all of your extra income on that debt so you can clear it out as quickly as possible. and then when that debt is cleared, you'll also have freed up income so that you're going to actually be able to invest far more than what you were investing before. >> the report found 84% of credit active consumers between 22 and 24 years old held one or more credit cards in 2023,

and in extreme events can even disrupt power grids on earth's surface. >> scientists say this solar storm could also affect migratory birds and bees, who rely on the earth's magnetic field to navigate. meantime astronomers say those who are hoping to view the northern lights in the bay area should head to a remote part of the area or a part of our bay area. after the sun goes down tonight. >> that's really important for people to realize that this is not a laser light show, but something quite subtle. just curtains of reddish light that might be visible in a very dark sky. so to see it, well, you'd have to get away from city lights and you'd have to have a good view of the of the horizon toward the north. >> the professor also says a smartphone camera may be able to capture tonight's light, sharp light show far better than the naked eye. the best time to see the northern lights is from 1 to 4 in the morning. i think you're only going to see it like a pink. >> i mean, you used to have to fly to iceland or northern

little bit of patchy drizzle out there. the fog is fairly thick along the coastline, swallowing up the golden gate bridge a little bit earlier this morning, and we'll continue with that to for the next few hours before it lifts. the rest of us will enjoy mostly sunny skies for today. now we're into mother's day, a 7 a.m. and we've got the clouds along the coast patchy drizzle as well as fog and it's inside the bay. our north bay as well as our east bay. if you have an early morning breakfast brunch, hike, those types of things a planned for mom, be prepared. you may come across some of that for the morning and then into the afternoon. we will have partly cloudy skies along the coast and mostly sunny for the rest of us. temperatures across the bay area right now 50 degrees at half moon bay to nearing 70 degrees in brentwood. so a big span going on across our region. 61 right now in hayward and in the north bay, 54 degrees santa rosa. let's head to the east bay where we do have a few of those warmer temps. one area in brentwood reporting 71 degrees right now, 63 walnut

here's a look over at san francisco. the low clouds with us along the coastline. inside the bay, some of our bayside communities joined by the clouds . i had some coming into oakland this morning. a view here of the patchy fog in addition to the low clouds. seeing a little bit along the sonoma valley floor and areas near santa rosa. we've got three miles reported there at the airport, but along the coastline, especially thick half moon bay, right now reporting zero visibility. so you will find patchy, dense fog along the coast this morning, 54 degrees at san francisco at this hour, a low 70s in brentwood and as we get into the afternoon, we do expect again temperatures to range from mid 60s near our coast to 90 degrees inland. slightly cooler for mother's day . a better look at this forecast for the weekend, as well as the extended forecast coming up. >> all right rosemary thank you. new this morning federal prosecutors are reportedly asking a judge to sentence david depape to 40 years in prison. last november, depape was found guilty of breaking into the san francisco home of former house

speaker nancy pelosi and attacking her husband paul, with a hammer. court records obtained by the san francisco chronicle show. federal prosecutors believe he deserves several decades behind bars for that violent attack in october of 2022. they say depape has shown no remorse for the crime, and even appears to be proud of what he accomplished. >> the san francisco zoo is conducting an internal investigation after accusations of animal welfare, and some safety concerns. executive officials at the zoo met with lawyers earlier in the week. the sit down was scheduled after a vote of no confidence from nearly all the zoo union members, according to the chronicle. employees are being encouraged to contact investigators to discuss allegations of mismanagement at the zoo, still unclear exactly who is being investigated and when it officially begins. >> a private charter school in the east bay has abruptly closed its doors due to financial troubles. the new horizons school opened its campus on cherry street in newark. more than 20 years ago. but on

wednesday night, parents received an email from the principal informing them the middle school had filed for bankruptcy. they also learned that yesterday was the final day of classes for their kids. >> we were all shocked, you know, both of my kids were crying. all the parents, everybody was crying and really upset about this. about two months ago, we abruptly found out that some teachers were not being paid, we found out that like the lease had not been paid, some teachers say they have not received a paycheck since february, and several school staff members say the principal has not been in office since march 27th. >> time now 833. today is a special day for the class of 2024 students at uc berkeley. thousands of people will be at cal memorial stadium. celebrate with the graduating students. this is their first big graduation ceremony for many of the undergrad students who did not get to walk across the stage in high school because of the pandemic. back in 2020. this

graduation is still happening despite israel-hamas war protests, shutting down ceremony , as at other college campuses across the country, including usc, there is still an encampment of pro-palestinian protesters at sproul plaza, but students say they have remained peaceful there. un general assembly has voted by a wide margin to give palestine new rights and privileges, and it's calling on the un security council to consider palestine's request to become a formal member of the un. un general assembly president spoke shortly after yesterday's vote. dennis francis says all options need to be considered in an effort to end the fighting in gaza. >> if anything, the horrendous events of the last seven months have only hastened the urgency of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peaceful solution to the situation in the middle east.

red hyundai was returned back to her home. police told her that her car was the only one returned that night. her car was then broken into yesterday, but not stolen. many hyundais dating back to 2011 under recall because of how easy they are to steal all affected vehicles, can be taken to the dealership for a free repair. >> the recent advances in automotive technology could lead to some dramatic changes for the traditional traffic light. researchers at north carolina state university are looking into how to tap into this new technology to make america's traffic signals more efficient. the goal here is to improve traffic control and reduce congestion, especially in the nation's big cities. there could even be a fourth traffic light, a white one, to help direct self-drive cars through busy intersections. >> starting today, bart riders in the east bay should expect some delays. construction happening in south alameda county that's between union city and south fremont. free busses will be provided to riders

during the stretch. the green line, by the way, closed all weekend, so bart says riders should expect delays between a good 20 to 40 minutes in that work zone. >> and we're learning more about new plans to expand ferry service as far east as contra costa county. the sf bay ferry approved a plan for the next 25 years. it outlines a plan to bring service to foster city, hercules and antioch by the year 2050. more immediate plans include adding terminals in berkeley, mission bay, treasure island and redwood city. another meeting is scheduled in june. >> in santa clara county, workers are nearing completion of a massive tunnel which will help protect communities downstream of the anderson reservoir in the event of heavy rains. >> it's all part of an overall project to completely replace the 1950s era dam, which the federal government says is at risk of collapse in an earthquake. ktvu mark sayer takes a look at the project. >> it is hard to forget these scenes from 2017, when firefighters and boats were rescuing residents who lived along coyote creek in san jose's

rock creek community. the heavy rains that year overwhelmed anderson reservoir above morgan hill, sending water uncontrolled over the dam spillway. in 2020, the federal government ordered the entire reservoir drained due to seismic safety concerns. all of which brings us to this massive tunnel now being built under the reservoir. >> so this new tunnel will help us keep the reservoir empty as we approach the larger anderson dam seismic retrofit project, which will include a rebuilding of the dam embankment itself. when complete, this tunnel will be 750ft long, and it will have the capacity to drain anderson lake reservoir, which is just above us, 15 times faster than what is possible with the current dam. in the end, when we're completed with the project , we'll be used as an emergency outlet only. so it's a it's a much larger amount of water that we'll be able to release that we would only have to do in an emergency, such as an earthquake or another, you know, flood event or something like that. a large storm, this new tunnel, which could fit two lanes of

vehicle traffic, will serve two purposes. >> first, it will allow the complete drainage of anderson reservoir, which currently still holds about 3% of its total capacity. that will allow the current dam, originally built in the 1950s, to be torn down once the new dam is built, the tunnel will provide far more capacity to quickly remove water from the reservoir, and if this project had been in place in 2017, we would not have seen the flooding we did there. the cost of the overall project, including the new dam, is about $2.3 billion. >> anderson dam will create thousands and thousands of jobs. these jobs are also pathways for apprenticeship programs for women, for veterans and for youth. >> anderson reservoir is by far the largest in santa clara county. the entire project is scheduled for completion in 2032. report in morgan hill i'm mark sayer, ktvu, fox two news. >> up next it's you. catch the rare northern lights last night. still to come a look at some of

after years of inactive progress. business would be built on the corner of first street and the silverado trail near oxbow area. their plans to build a ritz-carlton in napa were approved back in oh eight, but the project stalled due to economic factors. >> parents will soon be able to buy products inside of kohl's for babies r us, the giant retailer has formed a partnership with the parent company of babies r us to sell baby gear at more than 200 kohl's stores across the country. the brentwood store is one of those locations. baby furniture will also be available. the first baby shops inside kohl's stores are scheduled to open this fall. all right, target facing some heat again this year over the retailer's pride month policies. >> yeah they are. the company has decided to remove displays altogether in some of their stores after some were destroyed last year. ktvu christien kafton reports out of san francisco with reaction from target shoppers. mega retailer target

special for the class of 2024. good morning amanda, good morning. >> it is very exciting for these graduates. so they are gathering right now in the rugby field ahead of heading into the stadium. so there are a few things that they could do. they could get food, drinks. they're lining up here to take their photos. it is very exciting because a lot of these graduates did not get a high school graduation. you know, they had kind of a car parade or just it was canceled altogether. so this is really exciting for them. they get to celebrate this big milestone and honor these big accomplishments. so this graduation, of course, still happening. although protests surrounding the israel-hamas war have shut down ceremonies at other college campuses across the country, such as usc. but students we spoke to here at berkeley, they say they're not worried about that here. they say protesters on campus have been pretty peaceful. they're actually trying to accommodate those protesters. listen to them and support them. >> it's people's amendment right

are demanding the uc system divest from companies that are profiting from the war, but students say they have remained peaceful. yesterday morning at the law school graduation, there was a digital billboard listing names of uc berkeley law students that the pro-israel group accuracy in media accused of anti-semitism. some felt putting those names up was inappropriate. at a celebration. there were also reportedly chants during that law school graduation. now there is, of course, a large police presence here in berkeley surrounding the stadium because of this, there are also first responders, staff . as these graduates came in, were making sure that nobody had any signs, anything that they could hold up. so they were making them unzip their or unzip their gown so that they could see if there was anything that they could hold up. but overall, students here they are feeling excited. some say they're not sure if any protest is going to happen. we're going to have to

wait and see. but they say if it does happen, they do support that right to protest, live in berkeley amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> amanda, thank you. uc berkeley canceled a u.s. senate race debate due to safety concerns amid current campus protests. the debate between representative adam schiff and his gop rival, steve garvey, was scheduled to take place at the school in the fall. university officials called the debate off after determining they won't be able to ensure the event will be safe and civil. this comes after weeks of unrest at the campus, where a pro-palestine encampment has taken over sproul plaza. >> ongoing protests at a private liberal arts college in l.a. county forced the school to postpone and relocate its graduation ceremony. pomona college moved the main commencement off campus as protesters camped near the graduation stage. school officials say graduation ceremonies will not be open to the public, and proper safety measures, of course, will be taken. pro-palestinian protesters are calling for the total divestment from israel.

they say they will not move until their demands are met. protests are happening on college campuses nationwide at penn. at the university of pennsylvania, officers at riot gear arrested more than two dozen people there. police charge students and teachers with trespassing after warning people to leave. and at mit, outside of boston, nearly a dozen students were arrested at a similar scene was played out. >> they had hundreds of riot gear officers, state troopers, all to come down for a student encampment that was peaceful throughout its time here. >> all this comes just a day after a tense standoff at the university of arizona. police used tear gas there to clear out a pro-palestine encampment before the school had their graduation ceremony. >> firefighters are investigating a fire that burned through a church in west oakland. it happened around 730 last night at 27th and west streets. video here shows heavy smoke billowing from the building. the fire started at a

talk about how you can help. plus a special fundraiser that's coming up. we'll get to that in a moment. but good to have you here. >> thank you. frank. thanks for having me. >> we were chatting off camera. you think bay area people are, you know, usually working and doing pretty well. but there are a lot of families in all of our counties, including contra costa and solano, that need help, that surprise me. >> there are we're serving around nearly half a million people, 400,000 people per month on average. and we're giving out around 3 million meals per month. so you can imagine these are big numbers, right? but they are working mothers. they are your elderly neighbor down the street. they may be a coworker. so their faces behind these numbers for sure. >> right. and i would think too, that this isn't a weekly or a monthly thing. some folks are coming in each day. is that right? >> yes. people are coming into the to get help from the food bank, then going to our agency partners, of which we have over 267 days a week, and i would

imagine with the way the economy is right now, that it's not getting better, you're getting more people. is that right? exactly. i mean, what you were just saying around layoffs and, you know, people are still recovering from the pandemic and people no longer have pandemic era benefits. and they're still facing high food costs, high fuel costs, high cost of living. so we're seeing a lot of need in the community, and we're trying our best to meet that need. >> well, let's talk about how do you keep up with demand? >> we work really hard to get these programs up and running. we work with over 260 of our partners to serve food to the community. we focus on providing healthy food. so over 65% of the food that we provide, our fresh protein produce and dairy, we work with our partners in the community to get food out as quickly as we can. and when there is a need, we're here to help meet that need. and, you know, we're very fortunate in the bay area to have a very generous community as well to help us. >> and quite a volunteer group as well. right. how many

volunteers do you have? >> yes, we have over 8000 helping us. yeah. per year. wow. that's a lot. and i think combined they they help serve over 100,000 hours. so they're really incredible. and we couldn't do our work without them. >> no way. 8000 people that that is extraordinary. and if people want to help i would imagine your doors are open. right. >> absolutely. if people want to sign up to volunteer, if they want to give their time, food banks, xorg is a place to do it, we have volunteer shifts in our warehouses and we have volunteer shifts out in the community. >> and what is a typical if you do a couple of hours, is it a day and what what types of things would they be doing? >> thanks for asking that, frank. so if you go in the warehouse, you go in for a couple hours. you can bring your family if you'd like, and you come and help sort and, bag produce, box produce. if you're out there working, volunteering with one of our agencies or at one of our sites, you can help provide and give food directly to the community. so there are plenty of plenty of opportunities out there for people who want to help.

ambassador made it clear the biden administration opposes that new resolution. >> happening today in san francisco, a vigil will be held to honor the lives of journalists killed in the war between israel and hamas. today's vigil is in honor of a palestinian american journalist who was killed two years ago today by the idf while she was on assignment in west bank, the committee to protect journalists says 97 journalists and media workers have been killed since the war began on october 7th. more deaths are currently under investigation. today's event begins at 4 p.m. at the ferry building. new this morning, federal prosecutors are reportedly asking a judge to sentence david depape to 40 years in prison. last november, depape was found guilty of breaking into the san francisco home of former house speaker nancy pelosi and attacking her husband paul, with a hammer. court records obtained by the san francisco chronicle show. federal prosecutors believe he deserves several decades behind bars for that violent attack in october of 2022. they say depape has shown no remorse for the

crime, and even appears to be a proud of what he accomplished. >> police are investigating a series of car thefts in concord, all involving hyundais. a woman whose car was stolen telling us her car was one of five that were stolen on tuesday night near the concord bart station. but here's a strange twist her red hyundai was returned back to her home. police told her that her car was the only one that got returned that night. her car was then broken into yesterday, but not stolen. many hyundais dating back to 2011 are under recall because of how easy they are to steal. all affected vehicles can be taken back to the dealership for a free repair. >> the recent advances in automotive technology could lead to some dramatic changes for the traditional traffic light. researchers at north carolina state university are looking into how to tap into the new technology to make america's traffic signals more efficient. the goal is to improve traffic control and reduce congestion, especially in the nation's big cities. there could even be a

fourth traffic light, a white one, to help direct self-driving cars through busy intersections. >> starting today, bart riders in the east bay should expect delays. construction is happening in south alameda county. that's between union city and south fremont. free busses will be provided to riders during the stretch. the green line closed all weekend, so take note. bart says riders should expect delays between a good 20 to 40 minutes in that work zone. >> we are learning more about new plans to expand ferry service as far as east contra costa county. the sf bay ferry approved a plan for the next 25 years. it outlines a plan to bring service to foster city, hercules and antioch by the year 2050. more immediate plans, including adding terminals in berkeley, mission bay, treasure island and redwood city are in the works. another meeting is scheduled in june. >> middle school students in new york getting a new kind of education as a former trader is teaching them all about financial literacy. this class

education approved a $1.3 billion grant to expand resources for students. funding allows community schools to provide health, mental health and social services and put a strong focus on family and student engagement. >> a private charter school in the east bay has abruptly closed its doors due to financial troubles. the new horizon school opened its campus on cherry street in newark more than 20 years ago, but on wednesday night, parents received an email from the principal informing them that the middle school had filed for bankruptcy. they also learned that friday would be the final day of classes for their kids. >> we were all shocked, you know, both of my kids were crying. all the parents, everybody was crying and really upset about this, about two months ago, we abruptly found out that some teachers were not being paid, we found out that like, the lease had not been paid. >> some teachers say they have not received a paycheck since february, and several school staff members say the principal has not been in his office since

were found dead at a home in san lorenzo. that shooting happened sometime last week on dermody avenue. alameda county officials say they found two bodies during a welfare check. family members of both victims reached out to authorities, and they both filed missing persons reports when neither of them could be reached after a number of days. identity of the suspect has not been released. >> a rescue in the north bay caught on camera on thursday night. the chp was called to an injured hiker on the cascade falls trail in marin county. officers flew their age 30 helicopter to the scene using
