skills. his stage was often pier 39, in san francisco. >> i see a man that loved his craft. jordan was very happy and bringing smiles to other people's lives and their faces. >> but that joy with which jordan lived his life suddenly ended on november 25th, 2022. he was found dead in the driveway of the apartment building in the diamond heights neighborhood, where he lived with his longtime girlfriend, sarah buchanan. she had stabbed him once near the chest. buchanan was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last month, and sentenced to three years, but she's expected to be released next month with credit for time served. >> they're shocked too, so i'm still working through that. >> buchanan will be free less than two years after killing jordan, her attorney released a statement which said in part, the verdict was both fair and just because it was based on the applicable law and relevant evidence presented at the trial.

>> i want to expose and share that the legal process is not fair and just simpler, says there was no black juror in the trial and she says there were crucial evidence and witnesses ruled inadmissible. >> the district attorney's office said in part, we take each case seriously and put on the best case we can based on the facts, evidence and the law to meet our burden of proof. in this case, we sought a conviction for murder, and the jury returned a conviction of involuntary manslaughter. >> there is a great issue with men that suffer with domestic violence, but it's something that's not visible. or it's not, focused on. >> sempler says her brother suffered from emotional and physical abuse in his ten year relationship with buchanan, according to court documents. jordan came home drunk, woke buchanan up and called her derogatory names. she said she lunged at him with a knife to scare him, an account that sampler says doesn't tell the

whole story. >> there is this, this this emotion, this feeling of wanting to persist, to just persist, to fight. >> sempler tells me she's frustrated and will fight for justice. denied to her brother, jordan buchanan is expected to be released june 14th. at her next court hearing, sempler says the family will take action, including filing a civil lawsuit against buchanan. julie. mike. >> all right. amber lee reporting live in the newsroom tonight. amber. thank you. new at 11. today marks fentanyl awareness day and the california department of health care services shared a video on how to administer naloxone, also known as narcan. the department says the video serves as a way for people to learn how to administer narcan. health officials say the life saving drug can reverse an overdose. governor gavin newsom echoed the importance, importance of acknowledging the dangers of fentanyl in a tweet. he said the state is working to address the devastation caused by the opioid crisis. >> also new at 11. the

california department of cannabis control executed a search warrant at a hemp shop i marin county. the business is located on fourth and lincoln in downtown san rafael.ta authorities say the business hemp brothers, was suspected of selling illegainhable psychoactive hemp products. and tonight, officials say all of the cannabis products were seized during this bust. the bay area organization marin residents for public health cannabis policy says it has flagged this business and others multiple times for selling illegal products to young adults . they say many hemp shops these days extract cbd, making the product and thc levels much more potent and potentially deadly. >> so let's say one gummy bear is ten milligrams. you can only have 1010 gummy bears in that bag. some of the products that they are selling in this store, and others have 10,000mg of thc, 100 versus 10,000. >> city officials have said san

rafael prohibits cannabis retail businesses in storefronts. no word of any charges will be filed moving forward. >> the state is touting the success of project roomkey that converts hotels and motels into housing. the department of social services says. a new report found the program helped more than 62,000 people during the pandemic. officials say it has also led to the development of more than 15,000 permanent units. the report also finds the program was able to get more residents into permanent housing through longer stays and supportive services. only 15% of participants returned to the streets. >> fast food workers went back on strike at an oakland mcdonald's today to hold up. >> food. >> the california fast food workers union posted this video to acceptor. they went on strike this afternoon. workers initially went on strike last week because of an alleged rat infestation at the location. they're on jackson street, the union said. the workers were told not to take photos or any

video of the rats. the alameda county health department responded by shutting down the location, but union workers say they were called to work to clean up the rat feces, prompting the strike. today, the union issued a statement saying in part despite the shutdown, workers, including those who went on strike last week, were called on to clean and sanitize the store without proper equipment or training on how to handle the rat infestation. we have reached out to mcdonald's for comment but have not heard back. >> san francisco public school students and parents spoke out about possible school closures as the district discussed its latest financial audit. auditor kristy white outlined her findings at a special meeting this evening. she said the district meets the minimum financial economic reserve, barely, but that increased pension costs remain a significant factor, along with concerns about loss of enrollment. that decline in enrollment and a large deficit have the district considering potential school closures and consolidations. >> if you actually move forward with 33 kids in one class

between fourth and eighth grade, that there will be more parents that leave the district to either go to private charters or private schools. because 33 kids is too many kids. >> the district's budget will be the topic of future meetings. a list of possible closures is expected in the fall. the auditor did find that the problems with the district's payroll system from last year have been substantially corrected. >> tonight, demonstrators across the nation urging israel to stop its offensive in rafah. the israeli military says it has seized control of gaza's vital rafah border crossing, now from seattle to austin to atlanta, protesters taking part in so-called hands off rafah rallies. today here in the bay area, demonstrators joined the protesters at uc berkeley. sproul plaza, where people have been camping out for days now. ktvu tori gaines spoke with the protesters on campus, whose demands have now ramped up. gasia all eyes on you, all eyes

on you. >> we will never leave you here at uc berkeley, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members filled sproul plaza with chants for revolution in response to israel's attacks on rafah. >> it's been nearly two weeks since the pro-palestine encampment sprouted up at cal, and the number of tents has grown. a lot of people from different faiths, from different ethnic backgrounds, from different political beliefs, all here because we believe that the genocide going on in gaza right now is something that we have the power to impact and power to stop some faculty members on campus stood and chanted side by side with their students in calling for divestment. >> so many of us are sort of forced to be complicit with you know, illegal, immoral war that is being waged on innocent populations in our name with our funds. >> demonstrators in support of palestine have been particularly vocal on uc berkeley's campus.

while some students feel empowered by the demonstrations, others see them in a different light. >> i've never felt more ostracized or isolated ever in my life, nor have i ever felt such an overwhelming feeling of anxiety and distress. simply just existing. just simply being in my existence as a jewish american. >> though some students are struggling with the new reality on campus, one faculty member tells us he has full faith in his students. >> this is the best public school in the world. why wouldn't we trust these students to understand how to negotiate with their administration? what are justin necessary demands? do we trust our youth or not? and i think that i do. >> as you can see, the encampment is still here going strong. students and other demonstrators here at the encampment tell us that they are willing to stay here as long as it takes to see their divestment goals met. we reached out to uc berkeley for comment on today's rally, but the university had no statement to offer in berkeley.

tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> and right now, let's give you a live look at gaza's vital border crossing in rafah. it is wednesday morning. there, israeli forces took control of the gaza side of the border crossing with egypt. today, the israeli military insists that this is a limited operation, although there is no word how long it's going to take. the closed border means that un humanitarian teams in gaza could soon run out of fuel. the biden administration says it does oppose a large scale military operation there in rafah, and warns it would risk the safety of more than a million palestinians taking refuge there. >> a pet store hit by thieves in tonight's west coast rap, the owners say it's not the first time, it's happened. plus oakland. let's go. >> soccer fans fired up in the south bay for a matchup between the oakland roots and the san jose quakes. could it be a rivalry in the making and going green? >> the environmental certificatn given to more than

out a knife and stabbed one of the guards in the thigh. that's when another guard shot the suspect. the incident is the latest in a string of violent incidents on la's public transit system. >> it shouldn't be this way. it's what i've said and what i'm sure most angelenos feel you should be able to ride public transportation and feel confident about it. definitely feel safe. >> hey, police say the suspect died at the scene. the guard was taken to the nearby a nearby hospital and is expected to recover in washington state, three people were caught stealing three puppies from a pet store. >> investigators say the thieves walked right into puppy land in puyallup, pretending to be interested in the dogs, and that's when they grabbed as many dogs as they could before running out of the business. police say they got away with two yorkies and a poodle, all valued at $10,000. it is the second time the store has been hit in just the last two months. >> miss usa says she is giving up her crown to focus on her mental health. noelia voight, who represented utah, made that

>> with bay area bragging rights on the line. san jose earthquakes fans say they were looking forward to playing the roots. >> i was with san jose from going long back before the roots even started, but, and i'm also on this side of the bay, so it's an easier commute for me. >> the lamar hunt u.s. open cup gives semi-pro teams like the oakland roots a chance to play major league soccer teams like the san jose earthquakes. this is the first time the teams played one another in a competitive match. this earth quakes fan says he loves dressing up for games, and the idea of playing a crosstown rival. the rivalry is always good for two teams because the both teams will grow, especially oakland being right next to us and oakland staying at the bay because everyone else are gone. oakland roots fans also made their presence known at the

go is nearly 150. businesses have earned certifications from the city for their environmental leadership. the mayor and the city's environmental department made that announcement today, saying 147 certifications were awarded. this year between july 2022 and march 2024. this is one of the largest number of businesses to join the program since it began more than 20 years ago. last year, the city's certified green businesses saved more than 1 million gallons of water and reduced greenhouse emissions by almost 264,000

pounds. >> checking in on the weather again. we've got some nice weather to talk about. this whole week is going to be super nice. we've got temperatures that increased a little today. they're going to increase more tomorrow. these are the highs from today. and then highs tomorrow will eclipse these by a good 5 to 8 degrees. so a warmer day tomorrow. and then as we get into thursday and friday we could see temperatures into the low 90s. and our very warmest inland locations. so we'll see how that works out. but in the meantime we've got a good summer weather pattern coming our way. there is no fog at the coast because the winds are so they've been blowing so briskly the last few days, but there's a lot of north in the wind, and so that kind of chews up the fog and pushes it down the coast. and that's kind of where we are now. fog will probably return by the time we get to the weekend, but in the meantime, it's steady as she goes. and that's going to allow coastal temperatures to get into the 60s, for sure. so it's going to be just a nice week ahead. the swells are small if you do go out to the beaches because there's no fog. just be

aware that the rip currents are still nasty. even the swell is not that big. there's the wind advisory that goes into effect as we go into the evening hours tonight through tomorrow morning, and we might even see it get hoisted up again for thursday morning. we'll see. but that's the general area of the strongest winds, 40 to 50 miles an hour out of the north. so see how it's coming down out of the valley? the plan is dry. conditions here and in the mountains. breezy conditions. the next 24 to 36 hours in temperatures that are about as warm as we've seen for a little while, not so much. tomorrow but as we get into thursday and friday, we're going to see mid 80s, upper 80s, even low 90s possible. so it's a good weather pattern. i think the plan for allergy sufferers would be to get the keep the allergist or whatever you use, keep it closed because this whole week is going to be driven by warmer, higher temperatures or higher temperatures and then the wind and that the tree pollens and now grasses and weeds are starting to come on as well. so there's a five day forecast. you can see minor cooling on sunday for mother's day. but overall a

really, really, really, really nice weather pattern. i'll see you back here tomorrow night. >> all right. sounds good bill. thank you. new at 11 antioch police shared these photos today of a package thief caught on camera. authorities say a man on a bike stole a package from a house on eighth street, right near the intersection with west 20th street. the victim says the package was a birthday gift sent to her from an out of state relative on the day of her birthday. police say the suspect is actually often seen on the same bike in the same area. if you have any information about the case or thief, you're asked to contact antioch police a bicyclist died in san jose today after a driver ran a red light at a busy intersection. >> that crash happened at the east capitol expressway intersection with center road at about 730 this morning. investigators say the driver of a pickup truck, who is now in custody, was heading westbound on capital expressway and ran a red light at a high rate of speed. the truck crashed into a cyclist and then the driver of a white pickup truck. both the cyclist and the driver of that

white truck had a green light. the man on the bike died from his injuries at the scene. traffic in all directions was shut down for hours. >> i think everybody just needs to be aware. i think road safety is everyone's responsibility, so it includes being defensive on your own, right? i'm not sure that there's a whole lot that the bicyclist could have done here. if you're following the rules of the road. somebody wasn't. and unfortunately, that's what occurred. >> this was san jose's 17th fatal collision of the year. police say this intersection is among the leading crossroads for crashes in the city. and we just received a statement from san jose mayor matt mehan about the crash. he said in part, these deaths are far too often the consequence of distracted and reckless driving, and i applaud the work of our police department and district attorney who will arrest and prosecute those who put residents at risk on our roadways. >> a major retail bust in the east bay. thousands of dollars of stolen merchandise recovered. details on the arrest made. up next. >> but first, here's a look at

and their families they care for. the 15th annual notes and words event takes place saturday night at the fox theater in oakland. ktvu cristina rendon is emceeing that event and has more. >> it's one of the most exciting charity events for ucsf benioff children's hospitals, notes and words a night of performances by musicians and writers. aaron hickey is vice chancellor of development and alumni relations at ucsf. >> our team actually puts on the event, works with our friends, supporters, our incredible volunteers that dedicate their time, resources and ingenuity to making this all happen. >> hickey says all of the money raised goes directly to support the more than 250 children receiving care at benioff children's hospitals, ranging in age from newborns to teenagers. aside from the clinical care, they focus on a child and family's emotional and social well-being. the public's donations help cover the cost of things not covered by insurance, family support services is additional equipment that families might need.
