mitigation, and last year, more than 105,000 acres of fuel and grasses were treated. and cal fire says fuel reduction projects are essential to slowing down and reducing the intensity of wildfires. meantime, firefighters are worried this fire season could be dangerous across california. ktvu bailey o'carroll spoke with members of cal fire to hear what they expect for the summer and fall, and what you can do to be ready. you want to make sure that everybody is ready for what's coming because wildfire is coming, whether it comes next month or next year. wildfire is coming and now is the time to prepare. cal fire is marking the start of wildfire preparedness week by urging the public to get ready now for fire season. they say it's not a question of if, but when. one could spark. it can just take a matter of moments before a wildfire can approach your house, and you sometimes don't even get a minute of warning. cecille. juliet, a cal fire information officer, said it's important to have a good amount of defensible space surrounding your home and

andre, hello to you and happy monday everybody. plenty of sunshine across the bay area. we do have a weak disturbance to the north that will bring in a few clouds today. and a kick up our breeze just a little bit this afternoon. a live look here over parts of san francisco, alcatraz and the bay temperatures. wow. quite chilly by may standards. earlier today. sonoma 37 degrees for you. petaluma down to 36 and upper 30s in danville this morning. but temperatures now rebounding. we have 58 degrees in san francisco. so for the inner east bay hello brentwood. you're sitting at 65. these temperatures are warmer in most areas compared to yesterday up by four sfo novato, petaluma and concord. we're going to continue this trend getting into the business week and through the weekend looks nice and dry as well. more on the extended forecast coming up in a little bit. but outside our doors for today, we do have novato reporting a wind gust about 20mph or so. a light breeze through oakland concord gusting to 17. do expect the winds to

continue to follow that major development in the middle east right now. hamas accepting an egyptian and qatari led ceasefire proposal. israel says it's going over the details, which have not been publicly released yet, and it comes as the israeli army was ordering millions of palestinians to leave the city of rafah. fox's rebecca castor has more. palestinians are once again packing up and fleeing after warnings from israel to evacuate parts of rafah as fear. god knows whether we will stay alive or die or what will happen to us. israel's military is ordering civilians to move to a humanitarian zone north of rafah , as their invasion of hamas's last major stronghold appears imminent. israel claims this operation is critical to take out the terror group. but global allies, including the us, have expressed grave concerns. there's more than a million palestinian civilians living in, well, seeking refuge in, in, in

rafah. and we want to make sure that they are there. their lives are protected. this move by israel comes after hamas carried out a deadly rocket attack from the rafah area sunday that killed four israeli soldiers. cease fire and hostage negotiations between the two sides have also stalled, and prime minister benjamin netanyahu is rejecting international pressure to end the war. i say to the leaders of the world, no amount of pressure, no decision by any international forum will stop israel from defending itself. the war in the middle east has caused an outburst of campus activism at universities across the country, and today columbia university, a hotbed of protest activity, canceled its main commencement ceremony due to security concerns. in washington, rebecca castor, fox news. new this morning, the judge in former president donald trump's criminal trial has fined him another $1,000 for violating his gag order and threatened

jail time if he violates the gag order again, because the judge says the fines aren't working. last week, former trump adviser hope hicks took the stand, testifying about how mr. trump's presidential campaign was rocked by the leak of a video in which mr. trump made remarks about making sexual advances toward women without their permission. mr. trump is accused of falsifying business records to cover up payments made to women in exchange for their silence about affairs. they said they had with him over the weekend, several republicans reportedly being considered to be former president trump's vice presidential running mate, gathered at his home in florida. there were seven possible candidates at the fundraising event. here's the good news and i saw it this weekend. the amount of talent that we have in the republican party is extraordinary. there's a lot of names that are in the mix. i'm honored to have my names as one of them in the mix right now. former president trump said he'll make a decision on a running mate sometime before the republican convention, which is set to begin july 15th in milwaukee, rouz. it wasn't an attack because they were tourists. it was with the intent

comm for the showroom nearest you or to have their mobile showroom come to you. the families of three surfers reported missing in mexico are getting some measure of closure after their parents traveled to baja california to help authorities identify their remains. now, investigators are working to determine how and why they were killed in an area not normally plagued by violence. fox's jonathan hunt has more. over the weekend, relatives identified the remains of three men found dead in mexico. prosecutors in baja california believe the men, who were on a surfing trip were killed by thieves who tried to steal their truck. police found tents and a burned white pickup truck believed to belong to the men in the area where they disappeared. it wasn't an attack because they were tourists. it was with the intent to steal a vehicle. investigators say the suspects got rid of the bodies by dumping them in a well. a few miles from where the robbery occurred. the body of a fourth man was also

found, believed to have been a rancher killed weeks ago. the three surfers have been identified as american jack carter road and jake and callum robinson, two brothers from australia. shocked. very shocked . i mean, these were three of the best, nicest men that i have ever met. we want to know the truth and what actually happened. the men were camping along a stretch of coastline south of the city of ensenada before they went missing. the area is especially popular among surfers. a group of them performed a paddle out ceremony sunday to pay tribute to the three men, many dismayed at the violence, hitting a place they hold dear angry, fed up and sad at the same time that you can't have these beautiful places anymore because you don't feel safe. baja california has long been popular with tourists and is less violent than many other mexican states. even though the state department has advised americans to reconsider traveling to baja because of the potential for crime. in los

angeles, jonathan hunt, fox news. there is a proposal to change how stores in california regulate self-checkout lanes, which could lead some stores to abandon them entirely. sb 1446 would require stores to have one employee monitoring at most, two self-checkout stations, but also limit purchases to ten or fewer items. the proposed bill is intended to boost employment and cut down on theft. a worker at a grocery store in pinole says she's seen firsthand how people are taking advantage of self checkout lanes. i have seen customers who are not scanning all of their items in their carts, getting half of the items or just scanning a few, and they walk out with the rest. i have also observed customers who just walk through the self-checkout area when there's no workers, and they walk out with their items. some big buck chains, big box chains, including target, have started limiting the number of items allowed in self checkout. in hopes of reducing shoplifting. oakland mayor shengtao has joined other city leaders from across the country to ask for more federal

resources to combat homelessness. mayor tao made that request during a meeting of big city mayors in washington, dc last week. she wants the federal government to boost the number of housing vouchers available to low income residents in oakland. under this plan, recipients generally spend 30% of their income on rent and the vouchers cover the rest. recent studies have shown oakland's homeless population doubled between the years of 2015 and 2022. plans to build housing for farm workers in half moon bay are now on hold. their poor living conditions were exposed following a mass shooting last year that left eight farmworkers dead in the wake of the attack, state and local leaders called for new housing to be built for the area's agricultural workers. now, a proposal to build a five story, 40 unit apartment complex for senior farm workers in downtown half moon bay is being met by pushback from the city's planning commission. over the course of two hearings in recent weeks, commissioners have postponed the vote on the project, citing concerns over the building's design, height and impact on parking well, new figures show. tourism spending

in california has hit a post pandemic record, but that could be due to rising prices, a report released over the weekend says. visitors spent $150 billion in california last year. that is up from the previous record of $144 billion in 2019. but the report says adjusted for inflation, travel spending in 2023 was actually down 14% from the peak in 2019. even so, governor newsom, touting the new figures from an iconic california landmark magnificence of the san francisco bay. what a perfect place to announce our record breaking tourism numbers. the report had positive news about jobs. it said 98% of the travel industry jobs that existed in california before the pandemic have now returned, and says that also counts as a sign the tourism industry has recovered since 2020. one of alameda county's smallest cities is also among the state's fastest growing. a new state report found that emeryville's population climbed above 13,000 at the beginning of the year,

representing a 5% increase over the city's population from january of last year. it's the second largest growth rate of any california city, with at least 10,000 people. the city of lathrop, ten miles south of stockton, was number one. driverless vehicles are heading to the peninsula now. waymo is expanding its robo taxi service in the next few weeks. the pilot program will only be available to waymo employees. at first, they'll be able to order trips from san francisco to san mateo and burlingame, but they'll have to stay off the freeway. the expansion comes as state and local officials wrangle over control of autonomous vehicles. us lawmakers are currently pushing for a bill to give local governments the power to regulate robo taxis. that bill is set for a hearing today. today is the opening day of small business week in san francisco. there will be special events, workshops, ceremonies and networking opportunities for small business owners across the city. organizers say the goal is to celebrate san francisco's entrepreneurs and acknowledge the vital role small businesses play in the city's economy.

mayor breed is hosting the first small business week conference at pier 70 today. this fall, california voters could decide to require high school students take a class on managing their finances. the california personal finance act is close to being certified by the secretary of state. if approved, financial literacy education would be added to the list of high school graduation required acts, starting with the class of 2030. some topics would include paying for college, retirement and learning how the stock market works. google hosted a special event this weekend designed to attract more students to a love for eventually careers, hopefully in technology. dozens of children and their parents filled a room with a yellow dancing bumblebee. this event at the company's mountain view headquarters meant to help them learn the fundamentals of science, technology, engineering and math. i like science because it's like learning new things and you get to see like explosions. she uses technology every day, whether it's youtube, spotify, like they know everything. organizers of the

event say the goal was to help get more bay area students of color into the fields of science, technology and math studies have long shown african americans, latinos and native americans are underrepresented in tech, education and the workforce. hopefully motivate and encourage them to want to go to college and major in something stem related and hopefully work in the tech industry. organizers say the event was a success among other things, children as young as eight years old learned how to code and program using legos. cinco de mayo festivities were in full swing across the bay area this weekend. it's one of the most celebrated mexican holidays, highlighting the country's culture and heritage events across the bay area brought out families, lowriders, foodies and more folks in east in downtown san jose had two parades of their own hundreds of tricked out cars cruise the streets, a nod to the city's roots and influence. growing up in the east side of san jose, the lowrider community just made it a tradition to cruise around, and we grew up on that, and we just aspired to, you know, show up our rides and, bring

chilly start for most this morning. but temperatures are now rebounding and most of us are warmer right now compared to where we were yesterday. at this time we've got rain and some high elevation snow falling over the pacific northwest for today, and we are just here on the southern edge, picking up on some of those clouds out there. now. it will help to increase our winds into the afternoon. we get past this system and a warming trend begins. so i'll show you here tuesday into wednesday. notice the ridge that is building over the pacific that is going to strengthen our direction in the coming days. meanwhile, a pattern shift by about thursday with the system dropping in on the backside of california. you can see right here that's going to help to create that northeast flow. and that's what really helps to drive our temperatures up. more on those numbers in the extended forecast outside. right now we have 59 degrees in san francisco, low 60s in napa in our east bay, 66 for you, brentwood. let's go to the north bay. check in on a few more numbers. 68 right now, windsor, as well as rohnert park and for the inner east bay, 65 degrees for you, alamo into the

afternoon, low to mid to upper 60s across the bay area with a few areas touching 70. concord, fairfield and antioch. you're included there. the extended forecast, temperatures coming up a little bit tomorrow and then a more notable jump coming our way wednesday, thursday, upper 60s to about 70 degrees for the coast. upper 70s to about 80 degrees around the bay and low 80s expected for our inland communities. wednesday, thursday , perhaps a few upper 80s by friday and then into the weekend, temperatures come down just slightly, but still a very warm one out there, with temperatures ranging from upper 60s at the coast to low 80s inland. back to you. thank you rosemary. people who left california to work remotely in a state with a lower cost of living may still have to pay california taxes. during the pandemic, many people left for states with no income tax, such as texas, florida and washington. many of those workers are now discovering some or all of their income could still be taxable. in california, the franchise tax board could rule in favor of taxing the

money they make while working in other states. happening today, a budget advisory committee for the ross valley school district meets to discuss the details of a new contract agreement last week, the school district in marin county approved a deal with its teachers union. after several weeks of negotiations, trustees voted in favor of the one year agreement, which provides an increase in both salaries and health benefits for district teachers. a state mediator helped reach this agreement. in the contract talks, several school employees in novato will take early retirement to help avoid layoffs, according to the marine ij, 43 employees with the novato unified school district accepted an incentive to retire early. the district says this agreement will allow it to keep some of the staff members who would have been laid off due to the ending of covid era funding, california's education department is warning san francisco unified to figure out its budget. the state agency downgraded its financial status from qualified to negative, over concerns the district won't be able to pay its bills during the next two fiscal years. this
