the beat goes on for oakland's first fridays following a three month hiatus. >> first friday is community. it's the people it's supporting local businesses. >> this is highlighting the geese at lake merritt, the canadian geese. we also wanted to highlight springtime so we get some cherry blossoms. >> justin ford is among 60 vendors here. most are oaklanders. he started selling his clothing line at first fridays in 2015, for now has a brick and mortar store in oakland. >> this is an incubator. so coming out here, meeting other oaklanders, sharing a space also with other artists, it's just a spirit of positivity and we're looking to continue to keep it going. >> first fridays focus on art, food and entertainment. a mobile wall inviting people to paint is a popular attraction. the car show is another favorite, but the event's executive director, sherry godina, says there are changes, including no main stage with live performers. >> we're still struggling

financially. we're planning a big fundraiser in june. it's a golf tournament, godina says. >> the monthly event is funded by donations, grants and sponsors. the money pays for expenses including security and street closures. >> we're still thriving. >> we still need your business. it's just a wonderful event. >> supporters describe first fridays as being the best of oakland because of its authenticity and embrace of diversity. >> we're just so glad that they're here today. and so what we can do to support and keep these community things going, we're here for that. >> the executive director tells me it appears there are enough funds to hold first fridays through the end of the year. now, organizers say they want to expand the event, which currently spans six blocks to a total of nine blocks, going towards downtown oakland. >> christina gregg, amber lee live tonight in oakland. amber thank you. also happening tonight chinatown's monthly night market. crowds fill the streets to enjoy numerous

vendors. state senator scott wiener posted on social media saying, quote, the chinatown night market is off the hook. san francisco chinatown will hold night markets the second sunday of each month through november. also in san francisco, the northern california cherry blossom festival begins tomorrow. it's held in japantown. the event will feature a grand parade, floats, and performances, food and booths as well. organizers say the festival is a way to celebrate the blooming of the cherry blossoms and japanese and japanese american culture. the event is the second largest cherry blossom festival in the nation, behind the one held in washington, d.c. >> new. at 11, the chp arrested a couple of carjacking suspects after they led officers on a chase through the bay area this morning, the chp spotted a car wanted in connection to an oakland carjacking in solano county. chp officers waited for its helicopter to arrive before trying to pull over the car. instead of stopping. officers say the suspects sped away. eventually chp tells ktvu officers were able to stop the

driver in the tara hills neighborhood using the spike strips you see here, the suspects then surrendered to officers down in santa cruz county. >> a section of highway nine is back open after being forced to close due due to a crash involving a suspected dui driver. this afternoon, the chp was called to a crash along highway nine in front of san lorenzo valley high school in felton. the chp says a child riding in another car was hurt but is expected to recover. highway nine was shut down in both directions for about an hour and a half. the driver accused of causing the crash was arrested for felony dui. caltrain resumed full service this afternoon after a person was found dead on the tracks this morning. the incident happened around 920 near the california avenue caltrain station. a conductor reported seeing an object on the tracks and was unable to stop. they say the object turned out to be a deceased person. caltrain says it's checking its video records as it investigates what happened . >> rising concerns tonight in the middle east, as reports

suggest iran could attack israel at any moment. the united states has reportedly moved warships that would defend israel, israel's military also making preparations. the wall street journal, citing sources that say a direct attack on israeli soil could happen as early as today. it comes days after iran blamed israel for an airstrike that killed top iranian military leaders in syria. a potential attack on israel raises international fears that war in gaza could expand into a much larger conflict. >> we are stocking tents and supplies and working with all these countries in doing their own contingency planning, defense experts say it's possible iran could launch a smaller scale attack, with iran's supreme leader reportedly wanting to avoid a full fledged war here at home. >> tense moments at a cease fire protest caught on camera, a man seen assaulting and spitting on demonstrators in south san francisco, ktvu zac sos, spoke

to one of the demonstrators caught up in the attack, who says this is not the first time the man has clashed with the group. >> yeah, like you pull your mouse down, you cell phone video capturing a man spitting on and assaulting demonstrators during a gaza cease-fire rally in south san francisco wednesday. >> he personally elbowed me in the face. >> the woman, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, is part of the group changed south san francisco, which holds rallies every wednesday, this one coinciding with celebrations marking the end of ramadan. >> i should have been with my family, but i'm just so disturbed about the genocide that's unfolding. it's been unfolding for the past six months that i took time out of my day. >> the rally starting out peaceful. >> and then this man starts approaching us from across the street and he's like, you guys are racist, you're anti-semitic. >> like the man in the video identified as kent kenan by a family member. bomb, bomb palestine. this not the group's

first run in with kenan the week prior. >> he also showed up, but he wasn't physically aggressive. >> but that changed this past wednesday. >> i kind of tell him, like, don't touch me because he kept touching me with his cane. he's making contact with me and he's also threatening me. you need to get out of my city as if i didn't live here my whole life. it just felt very racist to me. and then things start escalating. don't do that. >> don't do that, man. >> after spitting on one of the demonstrators, he was pushing a few of us. >> so he was physically touching like almost all of us who were present there. >> police later arresting the 57 year old south san francisco resident. in a statement posted to social media, congressman kevin mullin condemning the violence and, quote, hate speech i feel like the root cause is our congressional elected official not calling for a cease fire. >> if he did it, then people wouldn't feel so emboldened to do things like this. >> and keenan pleading not guilty to three counts of criminal threats with an enhancement as a hate crime, as well as two counts of battery. we did speak to keenan's family

earlier who is just in complete shock about all of this. they wanted to add that this is not reflective of the values of the family in south san francisco, zac sos, ktvu, fox two news. >> next week marks 20 years since bay area native pat tillman was killed while fighting in the war in afghanistan. tillman grew up in the bay area. he played football for asu and was drafted by the arizona cardinals, but chose to give up his nfl career to enlist in the army after september 11th. the army ranger was killed by friendly fire in 2004. tillman's death was initially covered up by the military. his family learned the truth of his death weeks later. a 4.2 mile memorial run will take place tomorrow morning in san jose, and 36 other cities across the country. in his honor, money raised goes to the pat tillman foundation scholars program, which benefits active duty service members, veterans, and their spouses. >> oj simpson was one of the most polarizing athletes in u.s.

tropicana casino in las vegas. the story begins. tonight's west coast rap. >> jaclyn schultz takes us inside the shuttered resort for a look at some of the work already underway. >> this was a hotel room at the tropicana. there's another room in the earlier stages, though. guests are gone from the bungalow tower 150 to 200 laborers are inside and outside preparing the tropicana for demolition. six months from now, work has to start now. the president of laborers local 872, lou desalvio, explains when it comes to the point of getting the tower ready, it almost has to look, if not identical to how it is when it's being constructed. >> it's going to be bare bones, concrete, and then the blasting company, of course, will go in there. >> the laborers were also the team behind the start of the raiders stadium construction, and from the demolition of the riviera in 2016 to other long gone properties in and around the strip. they are well versed in how this process goes after

crews expose the walls inside the frame of the bungalow, there's a crucial next step tackling the layer of asbestos underneath, north star contracting tells fox five. crews soak asbestos to prevent its spread, then remove it in about six months. >> it's very tedious work when you go into an area, it has to be contained. hepa filters need to be set up. it's very hot work. everybody is all dressed in kavik suits. they have to, you know, clean themselves up before they leave the containment area. and that's what labor's local 72 focuses on. we've been training for asbestos forever. >> from the bungalow, laborers will tackle the tower and repeat the process for stripping it down and treating asbestos until it all becomes a shell of its former self. >> we'll go in there and then we'll start removing the carpet. the glass, the you know, all the fixtures, everything. it basically is going to be stripped down to a bare bones building, just about see through it when the implosion happens. there's not debris flying after demolition. >> construction of the a stadium is set to begin next spring on the other side of the property. bally's has plans for another property at the site of the

tropicana. desalvio says all this ongoing work and construction is exciting for jobs. >> every time a job is created, it gives us the ability to provide a career path for somebody second to none. for us to be able to grow. >> jacqueline schultz, fox five news, local, las vegas the tropicana is being torn down to make room for a new major league baseball stadium that the a's are expected to call home. >> the ballpark could be ready by 2028. now, before the a's move to vegas, they'll be in sacramento. ktvu alice suarez was at the coliseum tonight for the team's first game since announcing they would be moving to sacramento next season. we'll have that story later in our newscast. >> the demand for o.j. simpson memorabilia is on the rise after he died this week after a battle with cancer at the age of 76. now, anything signed by the san francisco native is growing in value. one store in las vegas says it sold more than 100. o.j. simpson items within hours of the announcement, and the traffic crashed. their website dealers say they are scrambling to keep up amid the renewed interest. >> it's just very typical with

closing across california, including two bay area locations. >> court documents released this month show the company plans to close storefronts in union city's union square marketplace and in san jose, near storey and white roads. the union city store says it will close at the end of may. the san jose location says it will cease operations may 19th. this is part of a larger plan to close 53 locations nationwide. rite aid filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy last year, tied to decreasing sales and lawsuits related to opioids. after serving its neighborhood for nearly four decades. a popular burger restaurant in point richmond has closed its doors for good. the great american hamburger and pie company, announcing on its website that after 38 years, yesterday was their last day of business. the owners blamed the closure on a recent ada compliance lawsuit, as well as a loss of revenue from the pandemic and inflation. >> pg and e, facing a massive lawsuit by a northern california company, the compensation the timber business wants for damage

1.13, santa rosa .03 and a lot more rain in our forecast first thing tomorrow morning. so here is your weekend forecast. the rainfall making a comeback by around sunrise and then off and on showers into the afternoon hours by sunday. we still have to hold on to the possibility of some showers, so it's a cool system, cold enough that we could have a dusting of snow up above 3500 or 4000ft in the bay area hills, so it's definitely a chilly system and rainfall expectations. as you can see, these numbers adding up. we're not just talking about a few sprinkles. and you can see up in the santa cruz mountains could be approaching two inches of rainfall. and once again, for the higher peaks, maybe a dusting of snow as that cold air moves in. here's the radar. so far we've been talking about some rain or tracking some rain up in portions of the north bay, and you can see behind this system here with the behind that rain, we have this front that will be the source of some rainfall first thing tomorrow morning. it is windy out there as well. oakland airport winds out of the south at about 21 miles an hour out toward sfo. at about 15, so it is breezy to windy. here is our live camera.

we're looking out toward the golden gate bridge. solid cloud cover out there, and current numbers have cooled off into the 50s. concord 56 degrees and most areas in the in the low to mid 50s right now. here's that front coming on board. and this will be the source of some rainfall early tomorrow morning for your saturday. and then some off and on. scattered showers into the afternoon with the possibility of some thunderstorms. so here's the forecast model showing you that rain band moving across the bay area. this will also be a snow producer out in the sierra, possibly around 3 to 4 to five inches of snow in the mountains. so here we are tomorrow morning. this is 8:00 behind the front. we'll have some breaks in the activity, but once we have those breaks, we have some showers pop up and maybe some thunderstorms. sunday. lots of clouds. and still the chance of a lingering shower that could pop up across the bay area. but the overall weather theme is we should have improving conditions for the second half of the weekend. take a look at your forecast. though it is unsettled the next couple of days, it is chilly as well. we will gradually clear out those clouds early in the week

with partly sunny skies, and we'll warm up those numbers as well. by tuesday and wednesday will feel like spring eventually next week. all right mark, thank you. >> pg and e is facing another lawsuit over the massive dixie fire. the timber company collins pine is asking for $225 million in damage in connection to the 2021 fire, which was determined to have been caused by a pg and e equipment. the company says the wildfire burned tens of thousands of acres of timber and trees and damaged their facilities in plumas county in san francisco, a community is rallying behind a mosque vandalized earlier this month. >> the suspect was in court today and is being accused of a hate crime. ktvu crime reporter henry lee spoke with people who attended the mosque and say this attack feels personal. >> it made me feel reassured that there is there is people care. >> imam mohammed anzali says he's grateful for the quick work of law enforcement and the public support. after an alleged hate crime at a san francisco mosque during the holy month of ramadan, san francisco police

say 35 year old robert gray is the man seen here using a skateboard to break windows at the place of worship at polk and sutter. i can only say that it speaks volume to see so many people of different ethnicities and such a diverse community come together to basically show solidarity. police say gray first came to masjid al-tawhid mosque on april fourth. >> he was armed with what i'm saying is a skateboard. he used to damage and vandalize this mosque. he broke the windows behind us. he then jumped into his car and he fled. >> authorities say gray came back five days later when he made his way inside. >> he made his way into the seating area. the mosque, escorted him out, called us. we looked for him. we couldn't find him. >> police say the suspect came back the next day and was arrested. with the help of the community. >> we are going to continue as a police department to be vigilant. we will drive by mosques and places of worship. >> on friday, gray pleaded not guilty to felony vandalism and a hate crime. we were not allowed to show his face, the prosecutor said. gray has a fixation on the

mosque and noted he was out on bail at the time of the crime after being accused of residential burglary in san mateo county. his attorney asked for a reasonable bail, arguing that although windows were broken, no one was hurt. the judge agreed with the da that his criminal conduct was escalating and denied bail. >> we don't believe that there's any indication that there's a hate crime at all, gray's attorney, jack lamar junior, said he's seen no evidence his client made hateful statements during his second visit to the mosque, as the da alleges, it doesn't appear that these statements have any sort of racial or religious animus attached to them whatsoever. i think that that's a perception. >> those who came out to support the mosque disagree. >> the fear that he has instilled in our community, especially among women and children and elderly that are attending the mosque when there is such a blatant attack back, such a blatant act of hate on a religious institution, on a community that we stand together, the public defender is asking for a medical assessment

next season, ktvu sports was at the game and spoke with fans about the team leaving the east bay after more than 50 years. >> drumsticks. chicken >> the aroma of meat on the barbecue wafting through the air from tailgate to tailgate. music playing. but the feeling is different tonight. fans know this is the last season of the a's here in oakland. >> well, i wanted them to stay, but i know that that it's a business, so they have to make money and, it's too bad they couldn't come up with an agreement for them to stay. >> your season ticket holders.

yes will you continue to be season ticket holders next year? >> sacramento is the equal distance from merced, as oakland is. and you don't have to cross the altamont. so probably so there's no word as to any guarantees for current seat holders. we haven't heard an offer from the a's yet, so we don't know what they're going to do for us. >> native oakland jose patino is, like others, resolved with the inevitable it's too bad that they couldn't come up to him with an agreement for them to build another stadium, you know? >> but i mean, that's the way it is. i mean, there's nothing that we actually can do. >> hard feelings. not hard to come by here tonight. >> i'm thoroughly disappointed, but i kind of understand. i love oakland, but oakland's got to do better. >> laverne grew up in oakland. she worries about the jobs that will be lost and the impact on the town. >> there's a couple of generations in there working, and now they're all out, going to be out of a job, and it's just very sad. so it's a trickle down effect.

>> john malach is an avid a's fan. he says he'll still support the a's on their way out of town. >> i did buy 50 tickets for the last game on september 26th, and i got a bus coming from the restaurant that i manage, and we're all going to come to the last game of the year, and it might be the last game in oakland. so the a's ended up winning tonight's game against the washington nationals, 2 to 1. >> as for the attendance, it was a low turnout. only 5777 folks here at the coliseum tonight in oakland. alice wurtz, ktvu, fox two news. >> we have a happy follow up to a giants story. logan webb's grandmothers, who the pitcher refers to as the giants team grandmas have long wanted to meet infielder wilmer flores. well, we are happy to report that meeting finally happened. ktvu bailey o'carroll got this text from his grandma patty today saying quote, he was so gracious and friendly. it was a sweet gesture from logan. knowing wilmer was just had posted a very difficult game. he's such a gamer. check one off my bucket list.

>> that's so sweet. well, tickets for a new concert in san francisco's golden gate park have already sold out. on the same day they went on sale, the company behind outside lands is putting on another show the weekend following the outside lands festival. the lineup includes system of a down and deftones. the concert will be polo fields on august 17th. the 50,000 tickets sold out today in just about 90 minutes. >> president biden officially declared the start of black maternal health week through april 17th, according to a report last october by the california department of public health, black women are 4.6 times as likely to die of pregnancy related causes than california women as a whole, doctor carla wicks from kaiser permanente east bay, says postpartum maternal care is important because sometimes the health risks show up after the baby is born. >> we know that various underlying conditions that patients and particular black patients have prior to the pregnancy can often manifest
