says the swimmer was last seen around 440 this afternoon, swimming with a group of friends . when that swimmer went underwater and did not surface. teams on water rescue boats began searching the area, along with crews on jet skis. sonoma county fire officials are urging people to be cautious this time of year. >> i know that it's temperatures are up outside and it draws people to the river, but we caution everybody to be very careful because this is a very common occurrence when the water is moving at the rate it is, battalion chief shawn johnson says this time of year, the waters are moving fast and can be deceptive. >> hypothermia is also a concern because of the river's low temperatures. still no details tonight on the swimmer who went missing, and we will continue to follow this developing story on air and online. you can visit ktvu.com for the latest information. >> health officials are monitoring the spread of whooping cough in the bay area in san francisco. more than a dozen cases have been reported since january, the latest cases

at a high school there in the city. ktvu zac sos joins us tonight here in studio with the story zach. >> yeah. and marin county, the other part of the bay area to see cases of whooping cough over the last few months. unclear right now if those cases are connected to the ones we're learning about in san francisco, parents at the san francisco school where those cases are centered, say they were recently alerted about all of this by school officials. >> this scary disease. i don't want my girl get sick. >> parent ji young's initial reaction to the news that a small group of students at her daughter's school in san francisco had come down with pertussis, also known as whooping cough. >> people should not be panicking at all about this, doctor monica gandhi, an infectious disease expert at ucsf medical center. the main thing is to control the outbreak, meaning the way to control it is anyone who has these symptoms have to stay home, have to get the antibiotics. >> since january, the san francisco department of public health says there have been 13

cases in the city, most of them among high school students at sacred heart cathedral prep. the symptom to be on the lookout for the telltale dry cough. >> the young children can have a very you know, kind of musical aspect to the cough. the vaccine can protect you from really severe disease. >> doctor gandhi says the vast majority of people in the bay area have already been vaccinated. really? >> say very few side effects. people do really well with these vaccines. >> parents feeling less anxious after reading more about the bacteria. >> i'm really not that concerned that much. school handled very well. we're pretty much vaccinated. >> so i mean, you know, what can you do? >> san francisco, not the only area in the bay with cases since december, neighboring marin county has reported around 100 cases of whooping cough, most of them among students at tamalpais high in mill valley. i think the fact that the marin outbreak, there's been that many cases and it's still ongoing, i think maybe there may have been a link

for the moment. doctor gandhi says the only age group people should be truly concerned about are newborns. >> they don't have the immunity when they're first born, and they can get really sick from pertussis. >> yeah. so certainly something to be mindful of. if you do have a newborn and there is someone else in your household who has tested positive for whooping cough or is displaying symptoms. in that case, doctor gandhi says the baby should be kept completely separate from them in another room. mike zac sos live tonight here in studio. >> zach thank you. today does mark the start of black maternal health week. santa clara valley health partnered with the county board of supervisors to raise awareness about the challenges black women are facing before and after giving birth. tonight's event had a screening of two short films and a panel discussion in 2022, the u.s. maternal death rate for black women was 69.9 per 1000. that's more than double that of white women. >> i was there with my daughter when she was pregnant, so i went

to the doctors with her and just like we saw in the film with gemma, there were times when my daughter would go in and say she didn't feel good and this would be overlooked. >> black women that are 3 to 4 times more likely to die during childbirth, black women in their 20s with promise, with hope standing before you, already exhausted. >> in 2020, california reported its highest maternal mortality rate in a decade. the discussion continues tomorrow with the perinatal equity conference, hosted by the public health department in santa clara county. >> an update tonight to the proposed plan to rename oakland international airport to san francisco bay oakland international airport. the oakland port commission unanimously approved the change tonight. ktvu is amber lee tells us why bay area residents are divided on the move enthusiastically. >> i seven eyes. >> the motion carries the oakland port commission voted unanimously to rename oakland international airport. >> the new name will be san

francisco bay oakland international airport. the action came after dozens of supporters and opponents weighed in, replacing oakland with the san francisco bay further disrespects oakland. opponents say the name change is an attempt to distance the airport from oakland's image problem stemming from crime and public safety issues. it's pro oakland. >> it is definitely not in any way denigrating the city that i'm so proud of, that i've been living in for 40 years, the port's executive director says the name change will bring more people and businesses to oakland. >> it is corporate gentrification. move and it's a weak move because it doesn't address the root issue of public safety. >> i strongly support trying to elevate the employment, the business attraction, the port commission first announced the proposal for the name change on march 29th. >> swift opposition has come from san francisco city leaders, business groups and stakeholders, including adding

sfo. >> we believe that this new name will ultimately be misleading to customers, creating greater confusion, disservice and ill will. >> the port commission delayed a final vote on the name change to may ninth, saying it will consider more public input. >> i think that really the ball is in the court of the port of oakland. are they going to make good use of that time, or are they going to continue to ignore some of this other feedback that's coming to them? >> san francisco has threatened possible legal action. i reached out to san francisco city attorney david chu regarding the vote, he said in a statement, we are disappointed that oakland did not take the opportunity to work collaboratively with us to develop alternative names and to avoid litigation. we will have further updates in the coming days. the port's executive director says. regardless of possible legal action, the commission will move ahead with its plan to change the name at oakland international airport. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news

more retailers and restaurants along a popular corridor in san francisco are taking legal action against the city over a controversial center bike lane. >> the lane, which was put in place last summer, runs along valencia from 15th to 23rd streets. the businesses say it's led to a substantial loss in revenue as parking has become more challenging for would be customers. those affected are asking for financial compensation and calling for the bike lane to be removed. >> the evidence is now clear that the center bike lane has had a tremendously horrible effect on the businesses. on valencia. it has diverted traffic, it has made parking less available and valencia street is now a shadow of what it was. >> the attorney says more than ten businesses have closed since the bike lane was implemented in february. three businesses filed claims with the city over the bikeway and then this week, seven more also say they plan to file claims. now, in a statement to ktvu, the city attorney's

office said that three claims filed in february were denied regarding the new claims filed. we are reviewing the claims and will respond in the appropriate time frame. the oakland police department says it is investigating a deadly shooting. >> it happened around 330 this afternoon on kennedy street, not far from the 23rd avenue exit off of interstate 880. video from the scene shows officers shutting down the street to conduct their investigation. the victim died at the scene. it is unclear what led up to that shooting or if any arrests were made. >> california's department of cannabis control is recalling marijuana products branded by former boxer mike tyson. the department says aspergillus mold was detected in two products under the tyson undisputed label. the recall applies to the 3.5g toad and tadpole's flower products, which were sold at six vendor locations across the bay area. the department of cannabis advised consumers to dispose of the product or return it to the

main complex in sacramento last night. took his own life today as deputies tried to arrest him. >> the story begins tonight's west coast rap. >> sheriff deputies say they had an arrest warrant for the double homicide suspect. and then today, they were able to track 32 year old ricky hunter to the arden fair mall. police confronted him in the parking lot as he was leaving to get into his car. at that point, they say hunter shot himself in the chest. he was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. >> in washington, a driver in a stolen suv nearly slammed into a family in another vehicle as he was trying to get away from police. oh oh dash cam video captured the near miss. seattle police say the 36 year old man was driving the suv and as officers spotted him, they say the suspect took off during the pursuit. the driver of the stolen suv struck a police car

and two parked vehicles. he tried to run, but officers were able to take him into custody. the man faces a number of charges, including vehicular assault, hit and run and unlawful possession of a gun in hawaii. >> a popular hiking trail, also known as the stairway to heaven, is officially being demolished at the end of the month. the city and county of honolulu held a blessing ahead of the project. the removal of the stairs had been discussed for a long time. the hike itself had been illegal since the 1980s, but people continue to make the trek, ultimately leading to the stairs removal. the demolition will begin later this month and is expected to take 3 to 4 months, and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs 7:00 monday through friday, or you can find around the clock coverage at west coast rap.com tonight. >> right? there are mixed feelings after the death of oj simpson. he died at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer. someone who was once remembered

as a star football player. simpson's legacy was tainted during the 1996 murder trial of his ex-wife nicole brown and her friend ron goldman. he has become one of the most polarizing figures in american history. tmz's harvey levin, who was a local reporter at the time of the case, had strong words upon hearing about his death. >> i'm uncomfortable talking to you about this because i don't have good feelings about oj simpson. people don't remember ron goldman and they don't remember nicole brown simpson. they remember oj simpson, and they know his fame. >> oj simpson was raised in san francisco, and in the 1960s he was one of the most well known football players in the city. >> he would later be inducted into the bay area sports hall of fame. ktvu s crystal bailey reports on simpson's early years in the city on what some call a tale of two lives. >> it was 1947, in the poor

neighborhood on potrero hill, where orenthal james simpson was born and raised. he spent his days developing his talent, playing sports at the local rec center, where a faded mural of him still commemorates his success. the trophy box, highlighting his 1959 little league baseball team and later on in the 70s, he he donated to the center, and they were very thankful for that. directors at the rec center saying he always supported youth sports. he went on to wear the number 28 at galileo high school and the number 32 at city college, the same number he made famous with the buffalo bills. >> everyone knew o.j. simpson in the 70s as one of the most dynamic athletes in america, and he certainly was, you know, at the top, top of the list for the nfl. >> carmen policy, a retired executive for the 49ers and a director for the bay area sports hall of fame, says he first met

o.j. towards the end of his career when he came home to play for san francisco in 1978. >> but even if he wasn't playing in the game, even if he wasn't producing on the field, you might say he was still scoring with the fans. >> but in the 90s, the nfl mvp and tv star's notoriety became tied to a tragedy. >> o.j. didn't live just one life. he lived to the second life that began with the murder trial that changed everything. that's what makes his life. the second half such a greek tragedy , because he had risen to such a high level as a performer and as an individual, and then came crashing down. >> and despite his polarizing reputation, policy says the board never considered removing him from the hall of fame if he qualified for induction. >> if later in life he has some difficult times and later in life he does some difficult

and today. but today we had the warmest temperatures inland. but the coastal sections as part of the bay cooled down a bit. so today temperatures, just some numbers, just a few sampled cities. and then tomorrow. so you're going to see 10 to 15 degrees cooler. and that's because the cloud cover that's going to come in cloud cover in the form not so much fog but maybe a little fog, but mostly just high clouds coming in. and those clouds will bring a little bit of wind onshore flow, southwest wind. nice day, but not like the last couple of days. the last couple of days have been stellar and then there's the system and you can see it kind of wrapped up here. it's going to work its way down the coast. it's not coming. it's not going to translate through from west to east. it's kind of going from the north to the south east, kind of like that. so it's going to work its way down the coast. the heaviest rain is going to end up in san luis obispo and down towards santa barbara and big sur and even santa cruz mountains. we could get a quarter inch to a half inch around here, with maybe an inch in the coastal hills. the forecast overnight

lows look like these. a pretty mild, so just on the weekend this is the model for the tomorrow morning. on the weekend just i think sunday is your day. truthfully i think saturday you're going to get away with it. you'll see here. here's friday night okay. and then there's saturday or saturday morning like 1 a.m. so this thing comes in overnight and then look it kind of gets through by 7 a.m. and so it's moving into the mountains where they're going to get six, eight inches of snow. and we're going to see some drying out. and then later on around 2:00 there's a chance for a thunderstorm. and those widely scattered showers that you get when the sun fuels, warms the earth, right. and you get the convection. so in sunday clears out pretty quick. so we'll see how that goes. that's the plan sunday is your best day on the weekend i don't i think saturday you're still going to get to do stuff. it's just not going to be a prolonged get into do stuff like 18 holes. i think i said this earlier, maybe nine holes if you're going to if you're a golfer, there's the forecast highs much cooler. and here's the five day forecast. and you can see that we've got a little bit of rain beneficial rain little beneficial snow. and

yeah it happens this time of year. this is not atypical. there you go. >> all right all right bill this weekend yeah right back at you. yeah. all right. thank you bill okay. >> well new at 11 tonight, a san jose e-sports gaming bar is asking for community help after someone broke in and stole the safe. guildhouse posted this video on instagram. it shows at least two suspects in the office of the business. taking the safe out with a dolly. guildhouse says they used tools to cut through a sealed back door from the construction site behind the business. it happened back on march 26th. guildhouse says this is the third time they were burglarized this year, and the eighth time since they opened. the business is now asking people to share the footage in hopes of catching those responsible. >> in palo alto, police have arrested a man after an undercover online child exploitation investigation. police say the investigation into 67 year old robert kenny wenceslao began early last month when authorities in georgia alerted officials that wenceslao was communicating with an undercover officer who was

acting as a 12 year old girl. palo alto officials then created their own account on social media, also impersonating as a 12 year old girl. police say wenceslao asked the account for explicit images officers were able to arrest him today at his home on dana avenue. they also say they believe there may be real life victims. anyone with information should contact palo alto police. >> here's a look at the stories trending tonight on ktvu.com. one of our top stories. a concord man is facing charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman near a bart station. also san francisco street vendors will soon see another change. the indoor market they were allowed to work in will now close after they were banned from selling on the streets and federal prosecutors officially charged shohei ohtani's, former interpreter, with bank fraud. he's accused of stealing $16 million from ohtani's account to pay off gambling debts. you can find these stories and much more all on ktvu.com. we're building

honor was started in 1993 to celebrate women making a difference in diverse communities. >> new tonight, the center for asian american media held a launch party in san francisco to officially kick off this year's cam fest season. ktvu jana katsuyama tells us what's different this year. the center for asian american media held its 2024 cam fest launch party thursday night at victory hall in san francisco. >> people gathered to celebrate and raise a glass to the 42nd year of cam fest, which has served as a showcase and support system for asian american film and media makers. >> having a platform to display our art and like the art that my team and i made is, it's really a dream come true. most of us really want to make an impact, especially within our own communities, so it's really nice to find a community that is very supportive. >> new this year. it's a change to the opening night venue, which will be held may 9th at the palace of fine arts theater instead of the castro theater,

which is under renovation. the opening film, called admissions granted, tackles affirmative action, an issue that has divided asian americans. those kinds of questions are vitally important that we talk about, talk them through, understand what is our relationship with other communities in america. executive director steven gong says many of the films this year tackled difficult issues with the pandemic, with with violence against our community. >> i think we're still trying to work our way through that. >> also, new is an industry hub space for networking and panels, just as a way to nurture and cultivate like more of these connections between our filmmakers and media makers. staff hope that cam fest can spark dialog during these divisive times and seismic shifts in the film industry. >> it's really dangerous if we stop talking to one another inside our own families and inside of our communities. >> it's totally changing, right? with all of these platforms, with dwindling, dwindling movie

theaters. and so for us, like this is a really important space . >> the opening night gala will be held once again here at the asian art museum. cam fest runs from may 9th through may 19th, and they have some 35 different events and screenings, both in san francisco and in oakland. reporting from san francisco, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news and san francisco mayor london breed kicked off the grand opening of south hall. >> it's a new food hall between fifth and sixth streets on market, located right next to the new ikea. in addition to workspace on the fifth floor, south hall takes up two floors with five restaurants that are known around the bay area. city leaders say this new development could definitely help this part of san francisco's market thrive . >> we are excited about what this will do to bring people together and opportunity for the workforce, for the hotel and folks who are in this neighborhood. we have all kinds of great cuisine because that's what san francisco is known for, and the space is open wednesday
