people who knew the bay area native before he became a polarizing figure in american history. >> plus, for us, it's a putting us on the map on san francisco bay for oakland airport, the port of oakland moving forward with that controversial plan to rename the city's airport. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> this rebranding has been the source of contention now for several weeks, pitting cities and counties against each other. thanks so much for joining me tonight. i'm heather holmes. in fact, san francisco has threatened to sue over the move, despite though the opposition. earlier this evening, the port of oakland voted to proceed with changing the name of the oakland airport to include the words san francisco. the change isn't a done deal just yet. a final vote is set for next month. our henry lee takes us to the meeting today. report leaders defended this decision. >> the port of oakland, which

oversees oakland international airport, discussing a proposed name change, adding three words to make it san francisco bay oakland international airport. >> confusion will be very, very minimal, if at all. >> danny wong, head of the port of oakland that oversees the airport, is doubling down on that proposal. this is absolutely a pro east bay pro oakland pride move. wong says a name change will only bring more flights and jobs to oakland. >> this is bringing people and business and visitors to oakland absolutely. trying to supplement, the oakland image, he says. >> airlines that support the new name include southwest, spirit and volaris. oakland city council member noel gayo says he likes the idea, and i strongly support trying to elevate the employment. >> the business attraction. >> but sfo says adding san francisco bay could lead passengers to go to the wrong airport. they're against the plan and san francisco is threatening to sue san mateo county is also against any new name. so is breeze airways. japan airlines and alaska

airlines. in a statement, alaska airlines said in part, we believe a name change to the proposed san francisco bay oakland international airport could cause confusion and potential inconvenience to travelers, especially as one of three airports in the bay area already shares a similar name appears to be attempt to discredit the city from its unique cultural history that, separate and distinct from san francisco, wan says oakland's three letter airport designation, oq, would not change, so he'll keep his hat. >> i mean, there's they're thinking about travelers who are traveling to this region all the time, travel expert angel castellano says. >> if no passengers are confused, he'll eat his hat. >> but there's so many people who are first time travelers, maybe it's their first time on an airplane. and we really have to have empathy for those travelers and make it as easy as possible. >> so it's official. the new name of the airport is now san francisco bay oakland

international airport. there's one more official vote on may ninth henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> now to the passing of oj simpson, who died of prostate cancer at 76. he was a bay area native and nfl legend and a controversial figure. he was born in 1947, raised by a single mom right there in potrero hill, he was a football star at galileo high school and then at usc. simpson would go on to become one of the most dynamic running backs in college football and nfl history. he gained stardom in television and in movies, but in 1994, simpson went from beloved former athlete to criminal defendant when he was accused in the murders of his ex-wife, nicole brown simpson and her friend ron goldman. >> we have never seen an athlete have such a fall from grace and nothing even his exceptional, athletic prowess, it was eclipsed by what became the trial of the century.

>> simpson was acquitted for the murders, but the jury in a separate civil trial found him liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay more than $33 million to family members of brown and goldman. and in 2007, simpson was convicted of robbery at a las vegas hotel and served nine years in prison. simpson remains a polarizing figure, with some viewing him as a fallen hero and others a symbol of the failings of the justice system. our crystal bailey is here now, after getting more reaction tonight from a former 49ers executive, crystal. >> well, heather, as you know, he's remembered for the 1990s murder trial of his ex-wife nicole brown and friend ron goldman. but before the infamous bronco chase, before he was acquitted of murder, oj simpson was a hometown hero and a bay area hall of famer. with humble beginnings, it was 1947, in the poor neighborhood on potrero hill, where orenthal james simpson was born and raised. he spent his days developing his

talent, playing sports at the local rec center, where a faded mural of him still commemorates his success. it's the trophy box, highlighting his 1959 little league baseball team and later on in the 70s, he he donated to the center and they were very thankful for that. directors at the rec center saying he always supported youth sports. he went on to wear the number 28 at galileo high school, and the number 32 at city college, the same number he made famous with the buffalo bills. >> everyone knew oj simpson in the 70s as one of the most dynamic athletes in america, and he certainly was, you know, at the top, top of the list for the nfl. >> carmen policy, a retired executive for the 49ers and a director for the bay area sports hall of fame, says he first met o.j. towards the end of his career when he came home to play for san francisco in 1978. >> but even if he wasn't playing

in the game, even if he wasn't producing on the field, you might say he was still scoring with the fans. >> but in the 90s, the nfl mvp and tv star's notoriety became tied to a tragedy. >> o.j. didn't live just one life. he lived to the second life that began with the murder trial that changed everything. that's what makes his life the second half, such a greek tragedy because he had risen to such a high level as a performer and as an individual, and then came crashing down. >> and despite his polarizing reputation, policy says the board never considered removing him from the hall of fame if he qualified for induction. >> if later in life he has some difficult times and later in life he does some difficult things, even bad things, that doesn't say he didn't achieve what the goal of the organization is to reflect the

policy. >> also says o.j. cared very deeply about his children who were surrounding him at the time of his death. of course, dying of prostate cancer at 76 years old. heather. >> all right. krystal bailey, thank you. and for more on one of the 20th century's most famous trials, we talked earlier today on the four with ted rowlands. he's a former ktvu reporter who covered that trial, and he told us the case had a lasting impact on trial coverage in the media. >> i think that the that the o.j. simpson case paved the way for so many cameras and so many different courtrooms around this country, and it's a good thing overall because it gives the system a test for lay people that are that have the time to actually test it and watch it. >> simpson's acquittal in october of 1995 was watched by an estimated 100 million people around the world. and to get more perspective, tonight, we on this story. we got it from harvey levin, founder of the

select ktvu. well, there's new video tonight showing another rescue by the chp h130 helicopters. the 25th rescue by this helicopter this year. this time the crew of the h 30 helicopter was called to lake county. it happened last night. an injured hiker was reported on redbud trail just east of clear lake. the paramedic was deployed and put the hiker in a harness, and the two of them were then hoisted out of the area. that hiker was taken to the hospital. no update on their condition. well, the governor taking action after the state's salmon fishing season is called off. his request from the federal government and san francisco gave street vendors in the mission district a place to legally sell their goods. why? these businesses are now looking elsewhere for customers and in weather. >> here is our nice thursday evening. sunset has been quite the weather stretch a nice warm temperatures over the past few days. we are tracking a big cooling change for tomorrow and eventually some rain. back in our picture. we'll have more on your forecast coming up.

emergency. after the cancellation of california's ocean salmon season. now, the decision to cancel was made yesterday by the pacific fishery management council due to the low numbers of chinook salmon. the governor says the emergency request will help bring financial support to the affected fishing communities. in a news conference in san francisco today, the salmon industry blamed what they call irresponsible water policies by state water managers. >> and we're fighting for these fish. we're making hard sacrifices for the next generation of fish, and we're

making the hard decisions about the harvest. now, we need the california water managers to make some sacrifices on their end. they need to make some hard decisions about saving these fish as well. >> now, the governor's office says it has allocated $800 million over the last three years to restore habitat, increase water flows and remove dams that will preventing fish from returning to their native rivers. it is a beautiful thursday out there. let's talk with mark about what we can expect tomorrow, which includes a drastic change. >> big time change. i think you'll step outside the door going, where's my where's my jacket? >> right. you got to have it tomorrow. >> yeah. it has been nice a nice weather stretch right. another round is 70s and 80s. take a look at some of the highs from this afternoon. a great day to get outside. you can see san francisco 65, concord 83, san jose 81 degrees. the fog, though, has been deciding to pay us a visit. this was a time lapse from earlier today. looking out toward the golden gate bridge that fog earlier was pushing back into the bay. it mixed on out nicely into the

afternoon hours. as far as current numbers, san francisco 57, some 70s for walnut creek and fairfield. and as we expand the view out here in the pacific, you can see a storm system out here. and this is going to be linked up with some cooler air that will definitely move into northern california and the bay area outside. right now, though, as you can see, mostly clear skies, a bit of some haze and a little bit of some chop on the on the water there. so a bit of a breeze out there. so we have that in the forecast for tonight. partly cloudy and breezy. more clouds for your friday. you will notice that change with temperatures cooling things off. and then rain makes a comeback early saturday morning. overnight temperatures will be starting out tomorrow morning in the 40s across most of the area, so a little bit more of a chill in the air for tomorrow morning. here's this area of high pressure. today was the last warm day in the series with 70s and 80s. and then as you can see, this system approaching from the north. so rain makes a comeback into your saturday. there is a possibility we could have some thunderstorms as well. here's the forecast model. you can see what happens as we do. put this into motion. increasing clouds tomorrow. and then by friday evening there's a chance

oakland after a three month hiatus. organizers say the event will take place this friday night on telegraph avenue in uptown oakland. now, first fridays was originally scheduled to return last week, but was canceled due to rainy weather. the last time the outdoor festival took place was way back in december. well, that's when organizers originally paused the event due to financial difficulties. the monthly block party, though, has been a gathering place for various artists, performers and small businesses in oakland for several years. a lot of people are happy to see it. back. street vendors in san francisco's mission district will have to look elsewhere for business. as ktvu tom vacar tells us, the city is shutting

down a temporary location where vendors were allowed to set up on thursday mid-morning. >> it was sunny, warm, quiet and pleasant on mission and 24th, as well as mission in 16th as police units stood by to make sure the ban on illegal vendors held, every vendor, including the licensed ones, were evicted, including jaime luna. >> the police says the first, the third round take out. >> even with a permit? yeah >> no. no choice. >> one woman who sells water and snacks on the corner says it's killed her little stand to 90% down. >> it's no money. it's a little money. so it's very complication now for it, for me, for everybody. >> it's a far cry from the days when chaotic, out of control dealers sold goods, many of them pilfered, had a 100% discount from beleaguered brick and mortar stores. when the ban came

to these locations, the city set up temporarily. la tiangge, a free place for licensed vendors. one lady who lives here in the neighborhood told me off camera that after 6 p.m. up until midnight, the illegal booths return and the selling goes on unabated. i pay tax, i pay for permits, but i can do nothing in the street. >> but people don't have any papers selling every day. but la tiangge will close on the 21st of april since the few licensed vendors that use it get little or no foot traffic, no money, no sale, nothing. one day you can believe $20. sometimes nothing for eight hours. >> so the city will put them back very close to where they were outside. >> we're going to move them over to 24th street, which is the other site that is open air. right? it's in the parking lot.

workforce, for the hotel and folks who are in this neighborhood. we have all kinds of great cuisine because that's what san francisco is known for. >> salou hall takes up. two floors with five restaurants. the space has been in the works for about three years. it's open wednesday through sunday from eight in the morning until ten at night. a tavern in san francisco's mission district will soon move to the east bay. this week, the owners of the monk's kettle near 16th and albion, announced that they will be closing their san francisco location after 16 years and moving to oakland's rockridge neighborhood. the owners say the popularity of delivery apps such as postmates and to go orders in recent years has really hurt their business. ktvu has reached out to postmates for comment, but we haven't heard back. the new monk's kettle is expected to open in the fall. let's going to do it for me tonight. thanks so much for joining me for the news at 730. don't forget to download
