the cut if not a top ten. be fun to watch anytime. >> tiger's in contention or win it. >> watch. >> i know it's like, say everyone likes to see tiger. all right jason thank you. all righty. next at 11 as we continue to gather data and get results, it allows us to track where those efforts have been the most fruitful. >> the chp calling its most recent mission in san francisco a successful one. millions of lethal doses of fentanyl now off city streets. the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. an update tonight on the added presence of highway patrol officers on the streets of san francisco. good evening everyone. >> i'm mike mibach and i'm julie julie haener. the governor's office released new numbers today, crediting the california highway patrol with taking over 9.5 million lethal doses of fentanyl off the streets in the past year. new tonight ktvu joy honda spoke with a recovery advocate who says he applauds the action, but points out that law enforcement is only part of the solution.

>> one little dose as little as two milligrams could kill you. >> fentanyl is a drug, tom wolf knows all too well. in 2018, he was living in the streets of san francisco and hooked on both heroin and fentanyl, leading to his arrest. >> it's a struggle because you'll basically do anything to feed that addiction. >> new numbers from governor gavin newsom's office on tuesday show the results of chp special operation, with the city of san francisco targeting the tenderloin and surrounding areas known as a hotspot for open air drug use. this is an operation that has a lot of moving parts. since may of 2023, chp has taken more than 40 pounds of fentanyl off the streets. that's more than 9.5 million doses of the drug and made nearly 500 arrests. >> driving down the street. and we witness a, you know, a hand to hand drug deal. yes, absolutely. we're going to intervene. >> chp focus is on making traffic stops to help free up

san francisco police resources. the goal targeting fentanyl trafficking and disrupting the supply chain of a drug that the cdc says is 100 times stronger than morphine, wolf applauds chp operation but stresses that drug treatment is key. >> and in june, i'll have six years clean and sober. and that's because i was held accountable. i had to go to jail for a few months to get sober, and then i went to a six month residential treatment program. >> wolf now works as a consultant for the salvation army's transitional housing program, helping people battling addiction to turn their lives around just like he did. >> i just need to stop this revolving door that we have with organized drug dealers continuing to be arrested and then getting released to pretrial diversion, and they head right back out onto the street, chp telling us they are doing this to support san francisco police and police telling us tonight they're thankful for that. >> in san francisco. josé jorda, ktvu, fox two news, new at 11

tomorrow, a rally in san francisco will urge the ninth circuit court of appeals to keep guns out of parks, hospitals, playgrounds and other areas. >> the rally comes just a day before oral arguments are scheduled to be heard surrounding senate bill two. that bill went into effect this year, banning californians from carrying guns in most public spaces. the judge temporarily blocked the law last year, but a federal appeal court reversed the decision in late december, allowing it to take effect in the new year. >> a driver crashed into a gym in san mateo this afternoon. police say ipped just after 1230 today on 42nd avenue nelyic avenue, at a building housi theilicon valley elite cheer gym. the street was shut down while crews worked to remove the vehicle. police say no one was hurt. the cause is still under investigation. >> oakland police provided its biannual update on staffing levels to the city council safety committee tonight. they say they are working to try to boost academy numbers now. right

now, officials say the department has 708 sworn officers. opd's budget authorizes 712 officers. the current academy, though, has just 14 officers set to graduate next month. the committee also asked about reports that some candidates are being rejected for relatively minor issues, including credit problems. >> we take into consideration the good, the bad and everything in between, and we know that no one is perfect and we aren't looking for perfection. and if you have had challenges or issues in your background, we're looking to see how you overcome overcame those issues. >> the city's hiring freeze has also affected 51 non-sworn positions within the department. the department is scheduled to present its proposed budget to the city administration tomorrow. >> the san mateo county sheriff's office is looking for the owner of a safe found during a traffic stop. deputies say they pulled over a driver and found the safe inside the car. they're now looking for its

owner. authorities say a loaded ghost gun and drug related items were also recovered from inside the vehicle. the two people in the car, they were arrested, one on drug charges, the other for being a convicted felon in possession of a loaded ghost gun. >> proposed legislation in sacramento would increase penalties for corporations that break the law right here in california. the bill would increase the maximum criminal fines on corporations to twice the amount of the loss by the victim, whether an individual or an entity. up to $25 million per case. currently, the maximum fines are generally $10,000 per felony. all of this extra money generated would be deposited into a new california crime victims fund. if you commit corporate crimes, you will pay a just fine, a fare fine. >> you will be held proportionately accountable. and we are also saying to victims and survivors of crime, we see you, we value you, we are investing in the services that help you heal.

>> the state attorney general said this measure would have led to a more just outcome in a number of cases, including an oil spill in santa barbara in 2015. the company found responsible plains all american pipeline paid just about $3 million in fines despite causing an estimated $200 million in damage. >> new tonight after 20 years at san jose's santana row irish pub, rosie mccann's will close its doors for good. the owner says after the pandemic, they struggled to bring back customers. ktvu lamonica peters tells us what the closure means for the outdoor shopping mall. >> from customers to staff members, those who love rosie mccann's at santana row say they're going to miss the food, the fun and the cozy feeling of the irish pub. >> we were very disappointed to hear. we just heard yesterday that they would be closing. and i think it's a loss for santana row. >> i know the customers are sad. after covid, the business kind

of been declining, but it's more about like the staff and the family to me. we've been here for so long. >> the owner of rosie mccann's, mina shamsi, made this post on social media announcing the restaurant's last day of service would be april 20th. retail analysts say santana row is most likely in a transitional phase, with newer brands coming in and older businesses on the way out. i expect them to switch their tenant mix towards a little bit of a higher end tenant mix, but i don't necessarily see them having to switch it into miami, miami design center like high end location, because that already exists over there. corral, who's worked at mccann's for nearly a decade, says she found out about the closing last week. she says some employees have been offered jobs at a second location in downtown santa cruz, but the pub just couldn't survive in a changing economic landscape. >> it's just like inflation. we live in california. everything's so expensive and trying to keep up with the cost of other

restaurants in santana row, it makes it hard. >> daniel roberts, who's at the restaurant bar for the first time, says he lived in europe for 14 years and having an irish pub nearby reminds him of his former home. >> it kind of surprised, actually. it's very rare to find good irish pubs in the south bay. and so actually today, as we were walking past, we saw this and thought, oh great, let's get some irish food. >> some customers also told us they felt this is a big cultural loss to the community, but they do understand why the owner decided to close the doors on april 20th for a final time. lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news, stanford university tonight saying goodbye to a historic coach as the record breaking women's basketball coach tara vanderveer announced her retirement after 38 seasons. >> vanderveer has been a head coach for 45 years, starting in idaho and then to ohio state. before landing at stanford, she led the cardinal to three ncaa championships in her time as coach. this past season, she

became the winningest basketball coach in ncaa history, amassing 1216 victories. vanderveer will be stepping down into an advisory position with stanford athletics department now. in a statement, the coach said the joy for me was in the journey of each season, seeing a group of young women work hard for each other and form an unbreakable bond. the stanford football program reacting on social media saying there aren't enough words to explain the impact you've had on the farm. thank you tara. the university says negotiations, negotiations right now are underway with kate page to become her successor. pay played under vanderveer from 91 to 95. she's been a member of her coaching staff for the past 17 seasons. >> san jose state university dedicating an exhibit to the asian population in the south bay. >> plus, there's not just help but there are people who went through the same thing, and those people can show the way to

support of isis. the story begins tonight's west coast rap. >> 18 year old alex mercurio is being charged with attempting to provide material and information to the terrorist organization, the justice department says he was organizing an attack on churches in one particular city. prosecutors say the suspect was in contact with fbi informants pretending to be islamic extremists. the fbi arrested him before his planned attack this past sunday in los angeles. >> the spelling errors on the kobe bryant statue at crypto.com arena are now fixed. those typos included misspelling the names of von wafer and jose calderon, as well as the word decision. those mistakes were only spotted after the statue was unveiled back in early february. the 19 foot statue honors kobe bryant and his daughter gianna, who were among the nine people killed in a helicopter crash in 2020. >> and in washington, a gun control laws locked in a new legal battle as a judge ruled

the latino and hispanic community. a key demographic in the upcoming election. under a new initiative, la clinica de la raza has opened its doors to any and all care seekers, regardless of insurance, legal status or other potential disqualifiers. once we have a couple of years under our belt of this experiment, of this expansion that we can prove that in fact, by opening up our doors and focusing on these services, that we're saving the system money. >> i think president biden has demonstrated that if you work hard in this country and you do things the right way, there will be a path for you. >> it all stands on the policy pillars of fairness in care for all, lower drug prices, more and better insurance coverage. the new national 988 suicide and crisis service and health care jobs for a more diverse pool of people at all levels. but many super powerful health care interests from big pharma to

health insurance to health care conglomerates that spend upwards of $1 billion on political lobbying, oppose much of this. >> don't fight us. join us, president biden has made it very clear we're going to expand health care to more americans. and so if you're in the way, if you're a ceo of some of those companies that are in the way, we're going to fight back. >> since health care is neither completely private or public, voters will have to decide which advocates and policies they prefer. >> the best way to ensure that that we have an open and free and fair election is for every single person who is registered to go vote to get out and vote. >> and nowhere is it easier to vote than here in california. tom baker, ktvu, fox two news. >> new at 11. an independent nonprofit, is calling on the usda to remove lunchables from the national school lunch program. consumer reports claims that the prepackaged kid's lunch contains relatively high amounts

of the metals lead and cadmium. it also says all but one of the kits they tested contained harmful chemicals that are known hormone disruptors. none of the kits exceeded any federal limits, but five of the 12 tested products would expose children to 50% or more of the maximum allowable level of lead or cadmium. lunchables are served to 30 million children throughout the national lunch program. >> a whale tangled in a net spotted off the san mateo county coast tonight. wildlife officials trying to keep up with its long journey to help free the whale. >> also ahead tonight, east bay students return home from an unforgiving school experience. we'll hear from them about their trip overseas as. >> and it's warming up. it did today. it warms up further tomorrow, perhaps the warmest day of the week with rain drops in the f ecast a he five

a brewery. it explores the food and culture shared by the south asian diaspora and the role those communities played in social and political activism in the bay area. that exhibit opened to the public on the fifth floor of the library through may 31st. >> the american public transportation association is ranking the santa clara vta among the top five of the nation's largest transit agencies for ridership growth, according to the association. the vta bus ridership increased by 22% last year compared to the 18% national average. the light rail increased by 25. that was also above national averages. the vta credits these growth points to its overhaul plan that increased bus and rail route frequencies right before the pandemic.

>> alrighty then. as we go into tomorrow, i'll be a little bit warmer. we mentioned that these were the highs from today. highs tomorrow will eclipse these by 3 or 4 degrees. so instead of upper 70s you're going to be looking at some more low 80s. we had a couple low 80s today. but most of the numbers today were in the upper 70s tomorrow upper 70s, low 80s for most of us, a little bit cooler at the coast, certainly. and maybe a little coastal fog tomorrow night. it's clear out there now in oakland, the classic kind of spring breeze conditions, you know, northwest winds 10 to 15 miles an hour. this is that pattern i showed you earlier. this is clear. clear. nice all the way to this guy. this is on friday. it gets close to us. but by friday afternoon it looks like it wants to stay offshore. so that's fine. and then on saturday it kicks in. at least that's the plan. and when that happens, the coastal sections, if there's a lot of rain to be had like a half inch or something like that, that would be right in the coastal sections, because it's going to be really favoring the west side or the west side of the

continent. it's going to be coastal areas because this low is not going to translate inland. it's going to go right down the coast. so these areas along the coast will get wet. if there's a lot of rain to be had, scattered showers on saturday. so the takeaway here is that we're looking at temperatures. the next couple of days are going to stay warm and pleasant and then we're going to get into this deal friday. it'll be cooler, but manageable. nice day cloud. partly cloudy, partly sunny. saturday is wet, at least to some extent. certainly along the coast. and then sunday looks like a pretty nice day. here comes friday morning and then there's friday afternoon. the rain just starts to kind of get close to us, and that low spins down the coast after that. and brings us a bit of a wet saturday. strongest dynamics with this low are going to be down towards big sur and down towards monterey and san luis obispo. so with that in mind, here we go. there's the five day forecast. julie's doing a little floor directing over here. colin. you know london.

we all have to live on this planet together. >> the whale had been entangled in the fishing gear for weeks, and noaa says it was first spotted down in southern california near long beach. >> it was spotted by one of the whale watch boats off southern california. >> noah shared this photo with ktvu showing the whales body. they say unlike the usual entanglements involving rope, this is a much more severe entanglement involving a gillnet. >> gill net is a very dense, mesh and tie twisted around the tail is very difficult to try to remove. >> noaa's west coast marine mammal stranding network says the whale was too skittish to attempt a disentanglement, so they put a satellite tracker on the whale. on march 23rd. they followed it for a while, but the tracker fell off. gray whales usually migrate at this time of year from breeding grounds in southern california to feeding grounds north near alaska. it had moved northward and was spotted again april 3rd offshore

near piedras blancas and then again here off the coast of thornton beach, where the team tuesday once again approached the whale to attach another tracker and buoys. >> they verified that the entanglement is still there, largely in the way it was down off southern california. and, that's it's distinguished now by some floating their bright colored, balls of floating buoy. >> no, officials are asking people to call their hotline at one 877 s.o.s. whale. if you see the whale, they say, do not approach it. they are hoping to locate it and then go back out on the water and boats to try and disentangle it with some special equipment in daly city, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> here's a look now at the stories trending tonight on ktvu. com one of our top stories authorities have now identified the nine year old girl killed in a crash in the east bay over the

down at san francisco international. they're all from castlemont high school. they wen this overseas trip thanks to the pacific bridge club. over the past six years, the club has created a space for east oakland teens to learn about other cultures around the world. this group got to spend time in japan, the philippines, and taiwan, just missing the recent earthquake. >> it was amazing. it was my first trip out of the country. i haven't traveled anywhere else besides the places we've we've visit on past trips. >> the pacific bridge club has taken oakland students to egypt, turkey and vietnam on a great trip for those kids. >> well, the giants mascot, lucille, addressing his different appearance at the giants game on sunday against

the padres. i want to show you some video posted to the giants facebook page. but fans in attendance noticed an obvious difference to his look. lucille himself then took to act, saying, i am not being replaced. he said the giants bought an inflatable version of the beloved mascot as an extra way of entertaining the fans. so if you head to a game, you just might see both the oakland zoo said goodbye to a tiger cub they rescued earlier this year, a cub they named lily. >> now, the zoo posted this video to facebook. the california department of fish and wildlife helped place lily into a transport crate, which was then sent to her permanent home yesterday. she'll now be at the performing animal welfare society that's here in northern california. lily becomes the eighth tiger to join the sanctuary, where she will explore bigger spaces now, zoo officials said. although it is sad to see their rescues go, they are happy that she will be
