of the people here. so, yeah, quite a few people are here just for the eclipse. they're closing down a lot of streets here just so people can observe. >> all right, so let me let me ask you about your gear. you know that we cannot look at the sky without hurting our eyes. even cell phones might be damaged if you point them up there. right. so. correct. >> you're going to need one of these. you're going to need a pair of these glasses. so i hope you have them already. >> yeah. how is how is your gear not going to be damaged by the eclipse. and how are you going to take pictures. can you show us around your rig? >> sure. we got the, the sony alpha camera here, 500 millimeter zoom lens and a solar filter. so we basically have these for the for the telescope and these for the binoculars. so those are those those are rated for the solar eclipse. >> how are you going to watch it. are you going to how are you going to take pictures and watch it at the same time? >> my sony alpha camera has a little flip out screen. i'll
7:16 am
probably do the majority of my watching on the screen, and i've got my trusty glasses. >> yeah. so, you know, i want to reiterate for people that you cannot look up at the sky, and i don't know if it might be too late to find those glasses. so i think you have to order them, are they giving them out to people down there? >> i don't know, i brought a few extra pairs myself. i have a few to give away, but, i haven't seen any any official stations where they're passing these out? >> no, give me a little bit of an astronomy lesson here. why is this eclipse happening? why is it so significant, and, you know, in the past, like here in san francisco, we're only going to get a partial eclipse, right? >> and so in san francisco, you're definitely going to need these glasses, because it's going to be, only partial. you get about 34% of the sun will be obscured from from about 1015 until about 1215. so you definitely need these glasses. there are other ways. if you go online, you can probably look
7:17 am
how to observe it in eclipse and you'll find your pinhole methods, you just poke poke pinholes in a card and you can see it that way. you don't definitely don't look through the card. you're projecting it onto another piece of paper, so yeah, that's that's another way of doing it. so here in mazatlan, it's going to be total. and what makes this eclipse significant is it's the first eclipse across north america since 2017. it's the last ones across north america until 2044, so unless you're willing to hop on a plane and fly across the ocean, this is going to be your last chance in america for quite some time to see this eclipse. >> all right, tom, well, thanks for showing us your rig. now, where can we see these pictures after you take them? because i want to check them out. well, i'm going to post them on my twitter account as soon as i can. >> so we plan on going down to the beach to get these shots. so i'd say within an hour afterwards i should have at least something preliminary online. >> all right. tony dunn, who is from archbishop riordan high school, physics teacher and also

an astronomer. thank you for joining us, tony. all right. >> thanks for having me on. >> we'll have live streams of the eclipse from all over the country on the fox local app. you can watch not only here on ktvu, but also on other fox stations around the country. just download the fox local app for your smart tv. and i'm going to switch hats here and just go right into my traffic report. let's go right to the maps. i want to show you that today has been a pretty nice day. i think some spring break action is going on. we still have the little bit of slowing on highway four as usual, and we also have some slowing at the bay bridge. it is backed up to the maze but it's getting better by the moment. i have a feeling this week is just going to be a little bit lighter because of some spring breaks going on at 717, let's bring in another scientist, mr. steve paulson. >> seems like spring break has been going on for a month, so i know we don't get any of it. >> so there you go. >> all right. nice job on that interview, by the way. all right. for the partial eclipse
