way. not for today. not for today. today is going to be a cool one. even the possibility of a few pop up showers into the afternoon a mix the sun and clouds. a beautiful view there of san francisco. the sun is up and shining. we do not have an advisory for frost, although it is still a cold one out there. this morning in the north bay, 37 in santa rosa for the inner east bay, 37 for you, livermore, and around the bay, low 40s to low 50s, 50 degrees sfo. that's one of the warmer spots into the north bay. we go where we do have 36 over areas like windsor. we've got rohnert park reporting 36 and again back to the inner east bay, where some of our colder temperatures this morning, 36 degrees in danville, visibility is okay. just a little bit of patchy fog. and we will have the clouds joining us as we are on the southern edge of a system moving through areas of the pacific northwest and northern california. temperatures today a little below average 65 in santa rosa, 59 in san francisco and low 60s oakland, livermore, san jose. better details on that

possibility of wet weather and that warm up in the extended forecast coming up. >> we will see it a bit. thank you. rosemary topping our news on this sunday morning. the investigation is now underway into a string of sideshows that all took place across the bay area last night, a busy night. they started down at menlo park, worked their way all the way to the bay bridge. ktvu tori gaines joins us live at the toll plaza with more. as i mentioned on a busy night, tori, good morning. >> good morning. frank. these sideshows have become a familiar sight for many of us here across the bay area. now. they took place in at least four cities last night, like you said, starting on the peninsula and landing on the bay bridge. here's what the video shows happened overnight last night. the string of incidents started around 11 p.m. in menlo park. dozens of spectators could be seen nearby as vehicles did donuts in the intersection. next came the stanford area, where the sideshow lasted around 15 minutes. next up was mountain

view, at the corner of middlefield road and bernardo avenue. video shows several spectators there leaping out of the way as cars are doing spins at high speed now. two sideshows also took place in oakland last night, one on 42nd in international boulevard around 2 a.m. and another near alma and excalibur around 3 a.m. but the big activity took place in the middle of the bay bridge around 3:15 a.m. early this morning. video shows hundreds of people gathered on the bridge as vehicles do. those donuts. the bridge was blocked for nearly 20 minutes by the crowds, bringing traffic, of course, to a dead stop. it's unclear at this time if the sideshows were made up of the same crowds, or if different, different groups showed up to each site. we'll bring you more information on that as soon as we have details. now we have reached out to the police departments and the chp officers at each of those cities that those sideshows took place in. we'll bring you more details

on that as soon as we hear back. live at the toll bridge. tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> thank you. tori, we've got some new information about a bus crash in oakland near lake merritt. the crash happened at international boulevard at third avenue about 630. this happened friday night when a car hit the bus in the middle of the intersection. oakland pd now confirming the suspect alcohol likely played a part in that crash. police say the driver of the car was taken into custody. citizens have footage shows several emergency response vehicles at that scene, with the bus stopped right in the middle of the street. police say the driver of the car ran a stop sign, hit an ac transit tempo bus. roughly 40 people on board. authorities say both the drivers, as well as several passengers, were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. >> a new survey revealing that a startling number of rideshare drivers have crashed their car on the job. the survey, conducted by researchers at the

university of illinois-chicago, involved 277 drivers who self-reported their histories and behaviors. results show that some of the most common reasons for accidents on the job included cell phone use and driving. while tired, or traveling on unknown roads. one university researcher cited another worrisome factor that could potentially cause crashes drunk or unruly passengers. >> time now is 705 investigators in san francisco are trying to determine the cause of a house fire in the city's potrero hill neighborhood. this all started shortly after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. a home on kansas street not too far from 19th. firefighters say the huge flames destroyed that two story home, but they did manage to keep the fire from spreading to other homes there and there are no reports of any injuries. >> police in san francisco say they've now made an arrest for a shooting friday afternoon in the mission district. investigators say 30 year old alexander martinez of richmond is accused of killing a man outside a barbershop on mission street.

police say the victim had just started a new job at the barbershop earlier that day. so far, there's no word on the motive and no word on the identity of that victim. >> elected leaders in the south bay. hearing from the public on how to address inequality in the communities yesterday, state senator dave cortez held a town hall in san jose, was focused on racial justice and poverty. cortez says he was inspired to hold the event after learning from a san jose state study that san jose leads the nation in youth homelessness. several people were on the panel, including democratic state assemblymember ashe, cholera under a new rule passed by a state committee, landlords providing new low income housing in california aren't allowed to increase rent by more than 10% a year. >> the california tax credit allocation committee passed the rule wednesday. the rule does not apply to developers who already entered contracts with the government to receive low income tax credits. housing

advocates say these caps are still too high and call for 3 to 5% caps. the rule can be waived if tenants incomes go up or if they move to a larger unit. >> well, the big news on lotto came just hours ago. a powerball player up north in oregon, not here in california, has won a jackpot worth more than 1.3 billion bucks. a single ticket matched all six numbers to end a powerball winless streak that began three months ago. this morning's news certain to disappoint some lottery players. we spoke to in san bruno last night and a few on the same. >> and in oakland. yeah, yeah, i might add too many. >> were hoping to strike it rich and share their good fortune with family and friends. >> first thing is helping other people. there's a lot of people that is hungry at this time. >> donate to a lot of animal shelters. >> all those charities, and that's it. >> well, the big winner in oregon has not yet stepped forward. no surprise there. last night's powerball jackpot was

black. it's a very eerie experience, though, because the light is very strange and your eyes have adapted in a strange way to that twilight. every seems a little bit purplish. the shadows before you get to eclipse are strange that your fingers make elongated shadows, but you can see little crescents of the eclipse in between the leaves of a tree. >> but even if you don't live along that path, nearly everyone else will see a partial eclipse here in the bay area, there will be one of about 35. that's exactly what brought pat borns and kathy keller to san francisco, as they hunted for glasses to take in the spectacle. we are running around the city asking everybody, do you have the solar eclipse glasses? >> and people were just treating us like we're crazy and so finally we came down here and there's a basket right out front, right out front of the store. we walked in. we're like, this is exactly what we need. >> in fact, the two say they're already looking forward to the next eclipse 20 years from now. >> when it comes back again, i think i'm going to be 94 and you'll be 84. yeah we're planning on it then, too.

you. can you give us a little bit of what the hype is like in cleveland? >> oh yeah. the excitement is building here in cleveland. i've got my eclipse glasses. great report there from bailey o'carroll on the right glasses to get. you're going to need these before the total solar eclipse here in cleveland. that's going to be occurring between 313 and 3:17 p.m. eastern standard time here. but even before the eclipse starts, we've got a lot of events going on, including here at the rock and roll hall of fame. you can see the music or hear the music is blasting. got a lot of cool stuff going on here, but there is some concern that there's going to be cloud cover on the day of the eclipse tomorrow. about a 40 to 60% chance of cloud cover here in the cleveland area. and of course, there's a lot of people who are in town specifically for this eclipse. we talked to one guy from atlanta, georgia yesterday. he drove all the way up here,

and he says that he has made alternate accommodations in quebec, just in case things are cloudy here. take a listen. >> it's incredible. it's everything people say it is, it's just an entirely different experience and anything you've ever seen in your whole life. so i wouldn't experience it unobstructed as much as possible . i already drove about 10.5 hours just to get here, and i'm willing to drive another 9.5 hours just to see a more certain, clear version. >> now, this is a really big event for cleveland. according to the city, between 140 and 200,000 people are expected to come into town for the eclipse. and to put things in perspective, it's like three browns games going on simultaneously. many hotels here are either sold out or have very limited availability. airfare is really expensive. tough to get a similar situation to other cities across the path of totality, and there's actually going to be a guardians home opener going on at 5:10 p.m. on eclipse day, so all sorts of stuff going on. but really, the

big question right now, will it be cloudy? will we be able to see that total solar eclipse? of course it's going to get dark no matter what, but really, that money shot that view of the moon going in front of the sun that's going to be a sight to behold. and a lot of people here are waiting with bated breath on whether or not it's going to be cloudy or clear. >> guys, we hear the music behind you. we see some of the excitement there. you mentioned the baseball game. i believe the women's final four also has their championship later this afternoon today. so exactly how many people are you seeing walking in and out downtown, and how many would you suspect are even from the cleveland area? >> yeah, i mean, a lot of visitors here from out of town. you know, the city of cleveland estimates just just for the eclipse, between 140 and 200,000 people are going to be in town just to view the solar event. and then. yeah, you mentioned it there. we got the final four in

that is making making a plan b and a whole different country just to get a sight of this thing. but cleveland, of all places. yeah. all right. well, it does rock. we know that. and it's very busy and, are we going to be able to see i know we're only getting about 40% here, but how about clouds tomorrow morning? >> you know, i think we're going to be in great shape. we will see the here at the eclipse comes just after 11 a.m. so if you look on the ground in those shadow areas, you're likely to see that partial eclipse over our area. so make sure you set your timer, head out the doors. you might get a glimpse of it giving you a look here over san francisco, i will add, as we've been talking about for a long time now, do not look directly into the sun. it could ruin your eyes. here's a look at the view from up above where we are starting out with partly cloudy skies. we do have a system working through areas of washington, oregon, northern california. we're just there on the southern edge, and we are calling for the possibility of a few pop up showers for today. temperatures will be slightly warmer. the futurecast shows you exactly what i'm talking about here. 1:00 primarily over the

higher elevations. so most of us are going to remain dry. but notice over the santa cruz mountains, notice over the north bay hills, we're seeing a little bit of blue there. it moves through during the afternoon and by sunset we're done. and then a ridge is going to bring in, bring us a warm up, i should say build in and bring us a warm up. 49 degrees in san francisco right now, 37 in walnut creek. so another chilly start to the day if you're going to the giants game. going to be nice here. a mix of sun and clouds, maybe a sprinkle. but again, you don't have to worry too much about it. it'll it'll pass through and be gone in a west northwest breeze to about 14mph. that game time at 105 with the afternoon high in san francisco, 59. low 60s expected for the east bay shore. mid 60s for the north bay. santa rosa. that's one of the warmer spots for today. here's a look at the extended forecast where temperatures are going to warm into the low 70s by tomorrow and then low 80s on wednesday. back to you rosemary. >> thank you. surface from waymo robotaxis now ramping up in the

city of san francisco. the sf chronicle reporting activity for the ride hailing company increased between december and february by 42% compared to the same period. this time last year. during that time, waymo gave rides to roughly 3500 passengers per day around the city. and while that's a spike for the company, those numbers are still far below the number of passengers taking public transit or uber and lyft. tesla stepping into the game now getting ready to roll out its version of a robotaxi this summer. elon musk making the announcement on x, formerly known as twitter, he posted a brief six word statement friday saying simply quote tesla robotaxi unveil on august 8th. his cryptic message contained no other details on his plans to get into the robotaxi business. this isn't the first time musk has made that type of announcement. back in 2019, he he said he expected tesla to be operating a robotaxi of its own by 2020. >> how about some baseball giants will wrap up their first home series of the season? host

padres this afternoon, once again at oracle park. last night, padres shut out the giants four. nothing. jurickson profar did all the damage with a grand slam first inning and michael king pitched very well in this ball game. the giants have won only three of their first nine games out of the gate. they lose it by a score of four to nothing. a's will wrap up their weekend series against tigers and a chilly detroit later today. yesterday, oakland snapped its four game losing streak, shut out the tigers four to nothing. brant rooker homered and paul blackburn pitched six flawless innings. blackburn by the way, has both the a's two wins this season. the a's are two and seven out of the gate. >> after the break, doctors say loud snoring could signal a serious health issue. the tips they are offering for a quieter, healthier sleep and paying bills is something i think we can all relate to. >> but now even six year olds

, as you mentioned, will be coming up in the days ahead when the afternoon highs come up, so did the overnight lows. so we're going to get relief during the morning hours as well. that will come in the extended forecast. let's focus on today where we have a view there of san francisco. and you can see that the sun is just bouncing off those buildings. there so we'll call for partly cloudy conditions today. a slight chance at a few scattered showers. the temperatures this morning. very chilly inland once again 38 reported in the north bay of napa, 37 in her east. bay of livermore. low 40s in oakland. we have a mid to upper 40s closer to the water there, but in any case it's great. grab the thicker jacket if you are heading outdoors. as a look there at storm tracker two. a few cells off the coastline and calling for a few pop up showers into the afternoon. not enough to ruin your plans. you should be able to get out and about for today with a mix of sun and clouds for most of us, and dry conditions by noontime. widespread low to mid 50s in the forecast and then for the afternoon upper 50s to about mid

intersection. next came the stanford area, where a sideshow lasted around 15 minutes near coyote hill road and page mill road. mountain view was next up at the corner of middlefield road and bernardo avenue. video shows several spectators leaping out of the way of cars, doing spins at high speed. this highlights just how dangerous these sideshows can be. now mountain view police confirmed to us this morning that a 20 year old woman from pittsburgh suffered a broken ankle after being struck by a car in that mountain view sideshow. two more sideshows took place in oakland, one on 42nd in international boulevard around 2 a.m. you could see tons of fireworks popping off in that area during that sideshow, and another near alma and excalibur around 3 a.m. now, the big activity took place in the middle of the bay bridge around 3:15 a.m. video shows hundreds of people gathered on the bridge as vehicles spin in circles. that bridge was blocked for nearly 20 minutes by the crowds, bringing traffic to a

chinatown neighborhood, peskin met with people at portsmouth square along kearny street. saturday packed house there. many brought campaign signs reading we know aaron. a mayor knows how neighborhood leaders, elected leaders and tons of community members were there. the board of supervisors president telling us his plans for day one if he is elected. >> number one most important issue is public safety. and public safety means disaster preparedness, and it means police on our streets. day one. it's working with our department of emergency management and our police department to make sure that every corner of the city is safe and launching his campaign with an event in chinatown is a significant strategy move. >> as no candidate has ever won san francisco's mayoral seat without winning the votes. in chinatown. >> now on capitol hill, congress is back in session tomorrow in the house. some republicans are threatening to strip speaker mike johnson of his gavel, fox's chad pergram explains.

in place this week up in lake county. on monday, the tribal eco restoration alliance says it's conducting a cultural burn in the community of lower lake, just south of clear lake. the alliance says this will reduce fuel loading, which is meant to make the community more resilient during wildfires and improve the health of the land and plants. the burn is expected to start at eight in the morning tomorrow and finish in the late afternoon. california's department of fish and wildlife asking for public input on proposed allocations of relief funding for local fish populations. they're looking for comments on thursday's edited version of their salmon disaster spending plan. it was developed with other fishing sector representatives in a conservation effort targeting

different cities last night, starting on the peninsula. as you said. here is what was captured on video overnight. starting off first, the string of incidents began around 11 p.m. in menlo park. dozens of spectators could be seen nearby as vehicles did donuts in the intersection. next came the stanford area, where the sideshow lasted around 15 minutes. at the corner of coyote hill road and page mill road. mountain view was next up, where a group gathered at middlefield road and bernardo avenue. a video of that sideshow shows several spectators leaping out of the way of cars, doing spins at high speed, highlighting just how dangerous these these incidents can be. police confirmed to ktvu that a 20 year old woman from pittsburgh suffered a broken ankle after being struck by a car in that sideshow. now two more sideshows also took place in oakland, one on 42nd and international boulevard, around 2 a.m. you can see tons of fireworks popping off in that area at that time, and another sideshow sprung up

near alma and excalibur around 3 a.m. but the big activity took place in the middle of the bay bridge around 3:15 a.m. video shows hundreds of people gathered on the bridge as vehicles spin in circles. the bridge itself was blocked for nearly 20 minutes by the crowds, bringing traffic to a dead stop. now, it's unclear at this time if the sideshows were made up of the same crowds, or if different groups showed up to each site. we'll bring you more information on that as soon as we have details. now, we have also reached out to the police departments and the california highway patrol in each of the cities where those sideshows took place. we'll bring you more on that as soon as we hear back. live at the bay bridge toll plaza. tori gaines ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, tori, thank you for that time now is 804. we've got some new information about a bus crash in oakland near lake merritt. this crash happened at international boulevard at third avenue about 630 friday night, when a car hit the bus in the middle of the intersection. oakland pd are now confirming

they suspect alcohol did play a part in the crash. police say the driver of the car was taken into custody. now, the citizen's app footage shows several emergency response vehicles at the scene, with the bus stopped right in the middle of the street. police say the driver of the car ran a stop sign. hit that ac transit tempo bus roughly 40 people on board the bus, so it was crowded. authorities say both drivers, as well as a number of passengers, had to be taken to the hospital for minor injuries. >> a new survey reveals that a startling number of rideshare drivers have crashed their car on the job. that survey, conducted by researcher at the university of illinois-chicago, involving 277 drivers who self-reported their histories and behaviors. results show that some of the most common reasons for accidents on the job included cell phone use and driving while tired, or traveling on unknown roads. one university researcher cited another worrisome factor that could potentially cause some crashes drunk or unruly

passengers. >> 805 your time investigators in san francisco are trying to determine the cause of a house fire in the city's potrero hill neighborhood that started shortly after 4:00 saturday afternoon at a home on kansas street, not far from 19th. you can see the smoke. firefighters say the flames destroyed that two story home, but they did manage to keep the fire from spreading to other houses nearby. no reports of any injuries. still trying to determine how it all got caught. fire and police in san francisco say they've now made an arrest for a shooting from friday afternoon in the mission district. >> investigators say 30 year old alexander martinez of richmond is accused of killing a man outside a barbershop on mission street. police say the victim had just started a new job at that barbershop earlier in the day. at this time, police tell us there's no word on a motive in the killing and still no word on the identification of that victim. >> elected leaders in the south bay are hearing from the public on how to address inequality in the communities there.

yesterday, state senator dave cortese, holding a town hall in san jose focused on racial justice and poverty. cortez says he was inspired to hold that event after learning from a san jose state study that san jose actually leads the nation in youth homelessness. several people were on the panel, including democratic staff assembly member ash kalra, and research and polling continue to show the divide between law enforcement and the black community is real. >> but in oakland, there's an organization that is aiming to bridge that gap. the nonprofit just got an assist from the warriors community foundation in the form of $75,000. ktvu is andre senior talked with the organization to see how the money is being used to repair trust between young black male students and the police. >> a sign outside a small business on the corner of 62nd and international boulevard in east oakland reads okay program of oakland. okay. yeah, it's a short name, long, though on

purpose. >> our goals in the program are to develop leadership and critical thinking skills, promote academic excellence, and reduce the high rates of incarceration and homicide among young african-american males. >> oakland police department sergeant robert smith is the okay program of oakland's chief operating officer. to understand the organization's roots. he cites a federal statistic showing the number one cause of death among black boys and men between the ages of one and 44 is homicide. i have a problem with that. and so sergeant smith, fellow police officers and other okay program community members act as mentors to young black boys, recruiting them in middle and high school, working with them on their schools campuses. they make sure the boys are attending class, keeping their grades up and for some, making sure they stay out of trouble. >> many times we talk about validating some of the things they're doing positive, but education is one part of a dual approach to helping the boys achieve long terme success. >> they're also taught life skills. >> one of the most important

things we do is on our saturday sessions. we have a great discussions about things that will help them change their lives. >> the sessions teach boys critical thinking and social skills. it's early every saturday morning, a day most kids like to sleep in. >> i want us to wake up early. i feel like i gained that skill waking up early. >> the leaders of this program will tell you all parts are important, but a key ingredient is breaking down the wall of mistrust, showing the boys that police officers can and do care about them and want them to succeed by introducing them to police officers that look like them, was very important to know that they are doing the job because they love the community and love the people in city, and that that they're not always there to hurt you or to incarcerate you. in addition to the police officers, there are probation officers who work with the boys. he is very personal to me. >> i'm very passionate about the work i do. it's being from oakland and going through the same things that these kids go through. >> there's also jamil blackwell, a volunteer who tells me he uses his background of difficulty

anticipated total solar eclipse will grace the skies over north america tomorrow. it's one of the most hotly anticipated skywatching events in recent years, and joining us now to talk more about the rare phenomenon is fox weather's max gordon. live in the beautiful city of cleveland, ohio, where everything is rocking, apparently between baseball and basketball. and you can look to the skies and say, wow, hopefully if you got some good weather, max, we hope you do. >> i hope we do too. and that's really the big question right now, because we've got a 40 to 60% chance of cloud cover tomorrow. clouds really tough to forecast out, but that's kind of what things are looking like right now. we're hoping that maybe a little hole in the sky will open up and the sun will be able to peek through, because really, that's what we need tomorrow to see this solar eclipse. now, before for the totality, we're going to be seeing the moon crossing in

front of the sun. that's when you're going to need these solar glasses. that's when you're going to need to put these on or else you can damage your eyeballs. and then between 313 and 3:17 p.m. local time, that's when cleveland will be plunged into darkness. and we're going to see that total solar eclipse. but again, we've got that chance of cloud cover tomorrow. that's got some people nervous, including one guy i spoke to who came up here from atlanta and said that he booked accommodations in quebec, just in case. things are going to be cloudy here tomorrow. take a listen. >> it's incredible. it's everything people say it is, it's just an entirely different experience. and anything you've ever seen in your whole life. so i wouldn't experience it unobstructed as much as possible. i already drove about 10.5 hours just to get here, and i'm willing to drive another 9.5 hours just to see a more certain, clear version. >> yeah. what's another 9.5 hours? right. well, this is

going to be a really big event for the city of cleveland. according to the city, between 140 and 200,000 people are going to be coming here specifically for the eclipse. to put things in perspective, that's like three browns games going on simultaneously. got a lot of hotels booked up, sold out, very limited availability airfare to cleveland. also really expensive and tough to get. that's kind of the situation in a lot of cities that are in the path of totality. and there's also going to be a guardians game tomorrow. it is the home opener for the cleveland guardians, so a lot going on tomorrow. and again, really everyone's crossing their fingers hoping that there isn't going to be that cloud cover, but 40 to 60% chance we'll just have to wait and see, guys, i guess so. >> and i know the women's final four is happening this afternoon there in cleveland as well. so you you were crowded there, where are i mean, there might be some people here with a lot of

dough that might want to jump on a plane today. what city would you go to? it's coming up from mexico, i guess through arkansas , texas through ohio, vermont, maine, that kind of thing. where would you go if you want to make sure you got no cloud cover? >> yeah, well, i would say indianapolis right now is looking like a really safe bet, mazatlan, mexico, that's also another spot, with limited cloud cover. probably a good place to go. that was one of the places we were considering going for our coverage. but, you know, i think here in cleveland, the forecast has been improved since yesterday. yesterday the fox forecast center is predicting many clouds today. they were predicting a few clouds i don't know, maybe that forecast can improve by tomorrow. and we'll just have limited cloud cover because today it's beautiful blue skies right now not a cloud in sight. so tomorrow might be a little bit different of a picture, but i'm crossing my fingers and hoping i don't know.

got hit by a car, broke her ankle. sideshow then continued into the night to oakland and the bay bridge. and we will have a live report. more on that story coming up at 9:00 and new this morning. >> chp telling us they are investigating a deadly car accident in concord early this morning. that crash happening on northbound 680 at the 242 split. it was first reported at about 5:00 this morning. chp tells us five people were involved. at least one person is dead and some were taken to a local hospital with major injuries. that car went off the roadway, so traffic is not impacted at this time. we know that scene cleared about half an hour ago. >> 832 your time the newest candidate for san francisco mayor aaron peskin, kicking off his campaign in san francisco's chinatown yesterday. this was at portsmouth square on kearny street. a big crowd on hand, hundreds of community members showing up for their support. many brought campaign signs reading we need aaron. a mayor knows how neighborhood leaders, elected leaders and tons of

of what you actually see, and it's not, as i said, not pitch black. it's a very eerie experience, though, because the light is very strange and your eyes have adapted in a strange way to that twilight. it seems a little bit purplish. the shadows before you get to eclipse are strange that your fingers make elongated shadows, but you can see little crescents of the eclipse in between the leaves of a tree. >> stargazers here in the bay area won't be able to see the sun fully blacked out, but we will see a partial eclipse of about 35. scientists say the best time for viewing will begin around 10:00 tomorrow morning. >> all that said, tomorrow's solar eclipse still creating a lot of excitement right here in the bay area. even though we won't see it completely. >> ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo breaks down exactly what we will see and what happens during a solar eclipse, and how you can watch it safely. >> a solar eclipse is a result of the sun, the moon, and the

earth all lining up a total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. the regions that are in the center of the moon's shadow experience the total eclipse. during this time, the sky will darken in the middle of the day, resembling dawn or dusk. the defined route of the moon's shadow across the earth is called the path of totality. on april 8th, the path of totality runs across 13 states from texas to maine. in this area, the sun will be completely covered for 3 to 4 minutes. residents in the bay area can expect a partial solar eclipse monday morning, 34% of the sun will be covered by the moon. the partial eclipse begins during the 10:00 hour, reaching a maximum at 1113 in the morning . safety is key. looking at the

their advantage and it is causing a devastating humanitarian crisis in gaza right now. there are some very grim statistics, all tied to the fighting in gaza. >> the un says 33,000 palestinian ones have been killed in gaza. that includes 13,000 children. un also says 1200 people were killed in the hamas attack on israel exactly six months ago. it says hamas is still holding more than 100 people hostage. time now. >> 843 this morning, a realtor.com study from last month revealed that it's now cheaper to rent rather than buy a home in some major cities across the country. roger healy is a dallas based realtor, and he says home buying consumers are shifting strategies and they're becoming more short termism and business oriented about home buyers. that means in the top 50 us markets, many home dwellers will rent instead of buying. a march study from realtor.com revealed about 60. or rather, renting can be about 60% cheaper than buying. healy recommends saving now if you're

looking to buy a home, 1 or 2 years down the road, and many people living in rent controlled apartments in san francisco are paying far less money to their landlords than their neighbors. the chronicle conducted a study investigating the impact on the city's rent stabilization law, which passed back in 1979. it found there are some huge economic perks in living in some rent controlled apartments for decades. the paper collected dates are rather data that found some of these longtime renters are paying about $1,000 a month for a home in pacific heights. wow. >> a controlled cultural burn is taking place this week up in lake county. on monday, the tribal echo restoration alliance says it's conducting a cultural burn in the community of lower lake that's south of clear lake. the alliance says this will reduce fuel loading, making the community more resilient during wildfires and improve the health of the land and plants. the burn is expected to start at eight in the morning, tomorrow on monday and finish in the late afternoon. california's

to raise money for the local wildlife park that he helps run. >> 846 your time. let's talk a little weather with rosemary on what looks like a very, very nice week ahead. >> yes, and this view we have of ocean beach in parts of the golden gate park area. truly inviting. if you are thinking about getting outdoors though, go for the thicker coat. it's a chilly one this morning, just as cold as yesterday for many, but now that the sun has been up and shining for more than an hour, we are looking at temperatures thawing out. i'll have a look at those numbers here momentarily. let's take a look at what is happening from up above where we do have partly cloudy, mainly dry conditions at this time. now we will have the opportunity city at just a few passing showers today. most of this system and the action going to stick to the north pacific northwest and northern california. but we are on that southern edge and it looks like we may experience a few sprinkles towards the afternoon, favoring our hills and santa

chilly start to the day. a beautiful view there over san francisco. golden gate park, golden gate bridge, marin headlands. we do have the possibility of a few stray showers passing overhead. today shouldn't be a big deal. we have an enjoyable one with temperatures expected to be slightly warmer than yesterday. right now we are up by a few degrees in many areas. temperatures ranging from a low 40s to low 50s 52 at half moon bay for the inner east bay, 46 in walnut creek. afternoon highs going to be again a little bit warmer than what we experienced yesterday, but still below average with the partly cloudy conditions and the few showers for the afternoon. temperatures today 65 santa rosa, upper 50s san francisco. if you go into the giants game, do expect an afternoon breeze. so bring along at least the layers or jacket. low 60s oakland, livermore, san jose a better detail of today, as well as the big warm up coming our way in the extended forecast coming up. >> rosemary well, new this morning we have learned one person was hurt in a string of

sideshows taking place across the bay area last night. they started in menlo park and worked their way up north to the bay bridge. ktvu tori gaines joining us live now from the bay bridge toll plaza with more details. good morning, tori. >> good morning james. these sideshows have become a familiar sight for many people who live here in the bay area. they took place in at least four cities last night. here's what we know so far, and here's what we could gather from the video captured overnight at those sideshows. the string of incidents started at menlo park around 11 p.m. dozens of spectators could be seen nearby as vehicles did donuts in the intersection next came the stanford area, where the sideshow lasted around 15 minutes at the corner of coyote hill road and page mill road. now, mountain view was next up, where a group gathered at middlefield road and bernardo avenue. video shows several spectators leaping out of the way and of cars doing spins at high speed, highlighting just how dangerous these sideshows

can be. police confirmed to ktvu that a 20 year old woman from pittsburgh suffered a broken ankle after being struck by a car in that sideshow. sideshow? excuse me now. two sideshows also took place in oakland, one on 42nd and international boulevard around 2 a.m, where tons of fireworks could be seen popping off nearby, and another sprung up near alma and excalibur around 3 a.m. but the big activity took place in the middle of the bay bridge around 3:15 a.m. video shows hundreds of people gathered on the bridge as vehicles spin and circles the bridge was blocked for nearly 20 minutes by the crowds, bringing traffic to a dead stop. now it's unclear at this time if the sideshows were made up of the same crowds, or if different groups showed up to eat each site. we'll bring you more information as soon as we gather more details. now we have also reached out to the police departments, as well as the california highway patrol for each of those cities where those sideshows took place. we are still waiting to hear back live

at the bay bridge toll plaza. tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> tori. thank you. time now. 903 new this morning chp investigating a deadly car accident in concord. the crash happened along northbound 680 at the 242 split. it was first reported about 5:00 this morning. chp tells us five people were involved. at least one person now dead, and some others were taken to a local hospital with major injuries. they say the car went off the roadway. so at this time, traffic is not impacted. >> big news on the lotto came early this morning. a powerball player up in oregon has won a jackpot worth more than 1.3 billion bucks. single ticket matched all six numbers, two in a powerball winless streak that stretches back some three months. this morning news is certain to disappoint some lotto players. we spoke to in san bruno last night. many were hoping to strike it rich and share some of that good fortune with others. >> first thing is helping other people. there's a lot of people that is hungry at this time.

>> donate to a lot of animal shelters. all those charities and that's it. >> a big winner in oregon has not yet stepped forward. smart man or woman? last night's powerball jackpot was the eighth largest in u.s. lottery history. investigators in san francisco are trying to determine the cause of a house fire in the city's potrero hill neighborhood. this started shortly after 4:00 saturday afternoon on a home on kansas street, not too far from 19th. firefighters say the flames destroyed the two story home, but they did manage to keep the fire from spreading to the other houses there, and there were no reports of any injuries. >> staying in san francisco, police there say they've now made an arrest for a shooting from friday afternoon in the mission district. investigators say 30 year old alexander martinez of richmond is accused of killing a man outside a barbershop on mission street. police say the victim had just started a new job at the barbershop earlier in the day. so far, no word on a motive in the killing.

>> elected leaders in the south bay are hearing from the public on how to address inequality in their communities. yesterday, state senator dave cortez, holding a town hall in san jose, focused on racial justice and poverty. cortez says he was inspired to hold that event after learning from a san jose state study that san jose actually leads the nation in youth homelessness. several people were on the panel, including democratic state assembly member ash kalra. >> research and polling continued to show the divide between law enforcement and the black community is real, but in oakland, there is an organization that aims to bridge that gap. the nonprofit just got an assist from the warriors community foundation in the form of $75,000. ktvu is andre senior talked with the organization to see how the money is being used to repair trust between young black male students and the police. >> a sign outside a small business on the corner of 62nd and international boulevard in east oakland reads okay program

of oakland. okay. >> yeah, it's a short name, long though, on purpose, and our goals in the program are to develop leadership and critical thinking skills, promote academic excellence, and reduce the high rates of incarceration and homicide among young african-american males. >> oakland police department sergeant robert smith is the okay program of oakland's chief operating officer. to understand the organization's roots. he cites a federal statistic showing the number one cause of death among black boys and men between the ages of one and 44 is homicide. >> i have a problem with that. >> and so sergeant smith, fellow police officers and other okay. program community members act as mentors to young black boys, recruiting them in middle and high school, working with them on their schools, campuses. they make sure the boys are attending class, keeping their grades up, and for some, making sure they stay out of trouble. >> many times we talk about validating some of the things they're doing positive, but education is one part of a dual approach to helping the boys

achieve long tum success. >> they're also taught life skills. >> one of the most important things we do is on our saturday sessions. we have a great discussions about things that will help them change their lives. >> the sessions teach boys critical thinking and social skills. it's early every saturday morning, a day most kids like to sleep in. >> i want us to wake up early. i feel like i gained that skill waking up early. >> the leaders of this program will tell you all parts are important, but a key ingredient is breaking down the wall of mistrust, showing the boys that police officers can and do care about them and want them to succeed by introducing them to police officers that look like them, was very important to know that they are doing the job because they love the community and love the people are sitting, and that that they're not always there to hurt you or to incarcerate you. in addition to the police officers, there are probation officers who work with the boys. >> he is very personal to me. i'm very passionate about the work i do. it's being from oakland and going through the

same things that these kids go through. >> there's also jamal blackwell, a volunteer who tells me he uses his background of difficulty growing up in public housing as an educational tool. >> my emphasis is basically sharing some of the things that i can that i've experienced in my life, and pass it on to these young men. >> for one of the boys, the program provides a place of belonging. >> to be so honest, it's been great. like everybody's really nice in the program for another, the lessons run deeper. >> it's been good because it keeps me out of trouble. how to de-escalate the situation and how to keep your emotions under check. >> and another. it's helping him plan for his future. >> the stakes for me is just like planning out my future, knowing what i want to do when i grow up. i would like a vote while the program may not be extremely well known, it does have some star power. >> petri byrd, who some people may recognize as the bailiff from the judge judy show, is chairman of the board for the okay program. >> i have literally seen hundreds and hundreds of lives

look to be a playoff team this year, but they aren't exactly wowing the league a week plus into the new season. last night, the padres handed the g-men their sixth loss of the season. eric jurickson profar did all the damage in the first, blasting out this grand slam off keaton wynn, who actually pitched a good game, going six strong despite a four run first. giants play the rubber game with the padres this afternoon before getting their first look at pitcher blake snell on the mound tomorrow night against the nationals. and let's talk a little giants baseball. joining me now is former giant pitcher and knbr radio host and friend of the program, bill laskey. good morning bill. >> hi, frank. how are you? happy baseball season. of course. the giants three and six in their first ten games. but a lot of positives with this team. and now you just got to get through the padres today. and you have washington, tampa bay and miami coming up. so it should be an interesting road trip. >> well let's talk about the

pitching and specifically blake snell who is going to take the mound tomorrow night. his debut. he was kind of a late season ab. but the cy young award winner talk about him and what he brings to the giants tomorrow. >> well i think you said it right off the bat. a cy young winner, his second one. he also won one in tampa. he goes six innings. it seems like that's his most innings. they've pushed him. most likely this year. they might push him a little further. he's just got a great great four pitch mix. the curveball is his out pitch. it brings a velocity, but at the same time, lefties are really, really, tough on him. i mean, he gets lefties out immediately. and, this is one thing that the giants needed a little boost in this rotation. and he fits right in with logan webb. of course, the 22 year old kyle harrison, who's just been pitching dynamic, jordan hicks, who they picked up in the free agent market. and like you said keaton wynn yesterday he pitched very well even though he gave up

the grand slam in the first inning. after that, he shut them down. >> we got a graphic here with some of the pitching newcomers. you mentioned, justin hicks, who has pitched his first two games very well, and then robbie ray may be the wild card. he's kind of sitting off in the distance, but he should be back from his injury by the summer. start with jordan. what is he bring to the table and then go to robbie. >> well jordan hicks was a very good reliever for the cardinals. and then he got traded to toronto. but this year he wanted to be a starting pitcher and he wanted to use all his pitches. of course, when he was a reliever he'd bring in 101, 102. now he's got a four pitch mix and he has pitched really well his first two outings, going seven innings. on opening day. he still throws in a high 90s. the slider is really come along for him and the split finger he's getting a lot of ground ball outs. when you look at robbie ray, a pitcher that had tommy john was out last year, he's coming back. it's slow, slow to recover off of tommy

john and they're looking probably after the all star break. the other pitcher you got to throw in there is alex cobb. of course he had hip surgery in november. he's coming along slowly and he'll probably be back in may. >> well they did. farhan was a busy guy. in addition to all that pitching help, matt chapman, jorge soler, who had a couple of bombs down in southern california, and the dynamic young hoo lee. let's start with matt. >> well, what can you say about matt? a defense, a platinum gold winner, a gold glove. also i mean, just some of the dynamic plays he makes at third base. they look like regular plays from his backhands, his forehands coming in, putting it the one hand, grab, his defense is spectacular. the best in the baseball. when you look at arenado and him being a top two, you know, you look at, jorge soler, a guy that should be hitting more home runs than he has, but, he is just come off to a slow start. and then you look

at jong ho lee on a dynamic young player learning to play the outfield. yesterday, he had a tough ball in the first inning with the sun. and it kind of, opened up the floodgates there in the first inning. but he's going to be good. he's a young player. he's just got to learn a little bit more on the offensive side. look, frank, this offense right now has not really done anything major yet. they've won a couple games here and there. one run games i'm looking for some crooked numbers out of them. and they do a little bit more than what they've been doing. >> i know they're probably going to have like a 12 run game here shortly, but they need it finally. bob melvin, i know big change. they they got him from san diego. some say a much needed change going from a completely different kind of manager in gabe kapler. what is bob melvin, a former catcher bring to the giants. >> well next teammate to frank. i played with him in 1986 and, he got the knowledge of the game. he's been in the game so much and done so much with the oakland a's and in the san diego

padres. a new voice in the clubhouse. and when you bring a new voice, it's new leadership. bob melvin has that kind of leadership where you listen and learn, and he's going to give more and more opportunities to the pitchers, the hitters. and you're going to see the old time baseball having these guys play nine innings. not much, flexing ability in the lineup. but at the same time, you know, you got to give bob melvin the plus on all the things he's done in baseball and the positives he's bringing to the san francisco giants as well as he wore that uniform in 1986 very proudly. >> yes, he did. and you were his teammate 10s playoff team this year. you think, oh, 100. >> i just think this team's going to gel, get some offense rolling and this rotation is going to be fun to watch starting today with webb snell tomorrow and like i said it goes from there. and it's going to be a fun, fun season. >> frank i wish we had time to talk about the a's move to. but another day for that. all the best bill. always a pleasure and joy on knbr post game. and let's hope the giants can rocket this

still stirring the pollen, and you definitely feel it moving into the days ahead. the warmer weather. of course, we'll keep that trend going, giving you a live look here over san francisco. partly cloudy skies, a chilly start to the day. but you know what? we are beginning to see a change and it's not so bad out there. we will take a look at your numbers here on the back end of the forecast. let's focus in on the possibility of a few scattered showers. you can see very quiet at the moment as we get into the afternoon, we may see again maybe along the coastline, maybe in our hills. everybody has a slight possibility at a few sprinkles. not going to be a big deal as this system moves out. and then the ridge of high pressure begins to move in and it stays with us. at least through about thursday, building our temperatures with each passing afternoon. that in the forecast coming up, here's a look at the current conditions right now. 54 degrees in san francisco, north bay, 46 in santa rosa and the inner east bay, 47 in livermore. now, i know this is chilly. you are going to need at least a

layer, or perhaps even a jacket if you are stepping out. but again, some of our inland cities this morning started in the 30s, so no longer the case. 44 healdsburg, 47 american canyon, inner east bay even 51 right now reported danville as well as lafayette. if you're going to the giants game, it's going to be a brisk one in the afternoon. do expect a breeze to about 14mph, and temperatures will only be in the upper 50s for today. so even though we're a little bit warmer than yesterday, we're still below average by at least a few degrees 57 along the coastline for the afternoon. low 60s in napa, mid 60s for you, santa rosa. you're one of the warmer locations. low 60s concord 63 expected in san jose. if you have been longing for the warmer weather, we'll let me get out of the way and show you what is coming by tomorrow. we do expect again, mostly clear skies for the eclipse, or at least partial, is what we are going to be viewing into the afternoon. temperatures take a notable jump low 70s for the afternoon, and then we're in the upper 70s by tuesday, with mostly sunny skies

big concern there. and things are looking a lot better today. now we are likely still going to have some cloud cover, but really there aren't going to be as many clouds as we were forecasting yesterday. it's tough to forecast those clouds. so fingers crossed things are going to be looking good tomorrow between 313 and 317 local time, as we have that total solar eclipse. now of course, we are here at one of the many events going on here in cleveland at the rock and roll hall of fame. we've got the music blasting and get this tomorrow during the eclipse, they're going to be deejaying it. so when we have that total eclipse, they're going to be playing eclipse by pink floyd. very fitting. so it should be a really fun time here. we've got of course, people here from all over the country. and i caught up with two folks really excited to be here. they're musicians here from pennsylvania. they got their tambourines and they

big day for the city and things are looking good as far as that cloud forecast is concerned. so i don't know. all things are looking up here in the land. back to you 200,000 people. >> that's a lot of people. >> thought i'd say this. i want to go to cleveland. >> so much buzz going on where you are, max, you know, kind of talk to us about. i think a lot of people think when you have this eclipse, it's going to all of a sudden be total darkness. i don't think that's exactly right. can you kind of give us an idea of what you know, the sky and around you will actually look like when the eclipse is happening, yeah. >> so it's going to be really a period of more than two hours where the eclipse is going to be occurring. you're going to be needing to wear those eclipse glasses for the most of it, you know, that's when the moon is not fully covering the sun, but then it's only going to be between 213 or, sorry, 313. and 3:17 p.m. local time. that's when you have that totality. that's when cleveland will be plunged into darkness, and it

will essentially look like night here, you know, it's going to be a really cool thing, and the temperature is going to drop as the sun is blotted out by the moon. and this is only really kind of in a relatively narrow band, about 115 miles or so wide , where you have that totality. so it's going to be a very unique experience. i've never experienced this before. i've experienced the annular eclipse. that was last year. i was in albuquerque, new mexico at the balloon fiesta, and that was when the sun was partially blotted out by the moon. but this is going to be a total eclipse, and it is going to get real dark, no matter if there are clouds or not. so that is the good thing. even if there's cloud cover, we're still going to be experiencing darkness and didn't you say they're going to play pink floyd at the rock and roll hall of fame area? >> a little dark side of the moon, perhaps, during the eclipse, they're going to be playing the eclipse by pink
