than a year since the deadly mass shooting at a farm in half moon bay, and a new lawsuit calls into question the living conditions of workers on that farm. new developments into the sex abuse scandal at the federal women's prison in dublin. a federal judge appoints a special master to oversee the facility. also ahead tonight. hit into the gap. >> is anybody there? >> no. a walk off win for the giants. home opener. and fans find plenty of changes at oracle park for this 25th season. there are also plenty of unanswered questions about the a's announcement to play next year in sacramento, and plenty of job cuts in oakland, with no clear plan yet on the future of the coliseum. >> this is ktvu fox two news at six. >> good evening. i'm greg lee and i'm cristina rendon. >> we begin tonight with the lawsuit now filed from one of the survivors of the mass shooting in half moon bay. more than a year ago. >> one of the men who was shot

but survived is suing the farm where that shooting happened, accusing the farm of failing to protect its workers. ktvu is alice wirtz explains the intention of that lawsuit. >> just over a year ago, this tiny coastal town in san mateo county experienced a shocking case of workplace violence. seven people lost their lives in a mass shooting that took place at two farms. five men, two women. the shooter parked outside the sheriff's office before being arrested. today's event, packed with media pedro felix romero perez was shot five times and survived. >> i had two bullets in my stomach, his brother, jose romero perez, killed with six other farm workers is that i have suffered a lot. >> lawyers filed suit, claiming the employer, california terra gardens, failed to safeguard their farm workers from numerous dangers. >> everybody has a right to feel safe in their home in the state

of california, not only did california terra gardens violate those rights by providing squalid living conditions for the farm workers, but they violated those rights by not providing a place where their tenants felt safe. >> attorney joe cotchett pointed out this was a traumatic event at the workplace that should never have happened. >> that's the tragedy. but we were shocked when our investigators came back with photographs, the likes of which you can't imagine. >> pedro perez was in the container. he lived in when he was shot five times. containers are typical housing for many farm workers, with no running water or electricity. >> one would think after 40 years of cesar chavez, we would be able to put people in something better than a container, a container. >> belinda arriaga is with alice, a community nonprofit that works with farm workers, immediately providing housing

support. >> and, of course, alice has been doing a lot of mental health work to all would like to see more state and federal support for farm workers everywhere who endure the same conditions. >> it's the landlords and the farms that fell short, and it's the landlords and the farms that are going to be held accountable for the harm that pedro and his brother's family are suffering. >> we are following a developing story off of a reported freeway shooting in berkeley. this happened just before 5:00 at the ashby avenue on ramp to eastbound interstate 80. live images coming to us from a crew on the scene, the chp says one person inside a car was shot by a suspect in another vehicle. the victims car then crashed shortly after the shooting. the victim has been taken to the hospital again. we have a crew on scene working to gather details. we'll have the latest coming up at 730. a man was shot and killed on a mission street on mission street in san francisco this afterno. police say officers w called to mission near 20th street just

after 130 this afternn, where they found the victim. despite efforts of firsters, the man died at the scene. san francisco homicide detectives are on scene as we speak. we're told no arrests have been made. a federal judge has chosen the former chief probation officer of alameda county to take over as a special master at the troubled fci dublin women's prison, us district court judge yvonne gonzalez rogers appointed wendy still to start the job, effective immediately. she was among the top candidates proposed by the attorneys representing the women suing. the prison still will be given a four person staff, as the team is tasked with ensuring reforms. at fci dublin. seven out of eight correctional officers, including the former warden, have been sentenced for sex crimes against inmates. one officer is awaiting trial. >> san francisco supervisor and board president aaron peskin has officially entered the race for mayor of san francisco. peskin filed all the necessary paperwork today. he has served on the board of supervisors for 17 years. peskin is considered

more progressive than the current mayor and incumbent london breed. peskin says he will use his experience as a policy maker and his recovery from alcoholism to help the city deal with homelessness, the fentanyl crisis and affordable housing. >> san francisco values are values of caring about our people, of doing right by our city, of being fiscally prudent, of having a thriving economy. those are san francisco values. those are the values that i espouse. and that's what i'm going to bring to this race. >> peskin is joining a growing list of people hoping to unseat mayor london breed, including fellow supervisor oscar safai and former san francisco supervisor and interim mayor mark farrell and philanthropist daniel lurie. >> we're following two big stories when it comes to the bay area baseball teams. today was the home opener for the giants at oracle park, and there's still plenty of more fallout from the a's announcement that this season will be their last in oakland before temporarily moving to sacramento next season. the a's have filed

trademark applications for sacramento a's and sacramento athletics. the paperwork was filed yesterday, the same day the team announced it would be temporarily relocating to sutter health park in west sacramento. team officials said the a's would play without a city designation, but planned to honor sacramento in other ways, including team uniforms. the trademark applications list requests for clothing and entertainment services like media production. some office staff of the oakland a's have been told they will likely lose their jobs at the end of the season because of the move to sacramento, requiring less staff. ktvu tom vacar has that part of the story in the seventh position, center fielder, though a's players and senior management will move off to sacramento and ultimately las vegas, the rest of the game day employees have just 74 pay days left. >> bartender tony evans, a ten year veteran, is one of them. >> this is the time of the year where a lot of us workers, we pay our bills from working for

the a's. >> food services alone has a pool of 800 workers, not to mention ushers secured janitors and facilities personnel. >> you got so many people that will be out of health care from may all the way to october. which is really bad. moms, dads, grandparents, everything. seniors. you have a lot of younger people with families with small children. >> vanessa riles is a campaign coordinator for ebay's the east bay alliance for a sustainable economy. miss riles says many of the jobs are union jobs that pay well over minimum wage, and just another job that they may find may not have that same level of support. oakland will be hard hit once again. >> a lot of them are from the area in east oakland where the coliseum is located, which we know is already a disadvantaged area where people don't have enough economic security, don't have enough housing security, and don't have enough job security. >> many workers say they've gone

from this insult. >> all those employees, we stayed loyal to him even though they wasn't putting a decent product on the field. when they have a winning product on the field, we all do good to this insult. we haven't heard them say anything about a severance pay for us workers. >> the last home game is scheduled for september 26th. tom vacar ktvu fox two news. >> plans are moving forward for the oakland roots to play at the coliseum in 2025. team officials say the joint power authority, which oversees the coliseum, has approved plans to negotiate and execute an agreement with oakland roots and soul ac, the oakland roots say, with renovations occurring at cal state east bay next year, the coliseum is the best home venue option for 2025. the team is also hoping to acquire the training facility on harbor bay parkway. the oakland ballers professional baseball team is holding tryouts tomorrow. it will be at the laney college baseball field from 945 in the

and then murdered her killer, richard allen davis has been on death row ever since, and now he hopes to change that. his attorneys believe a legal loophole may be entitling him to resentencing. ktvu dan rubin has more. >> one of california's most notorious killers wants his death sentence overturned. it was back in 1996 that richard allen davis was convicted in the kidnaping and murder of 12 year

old polly klaas. now he's back in court thanks to a change in the law. >> it's horrible. this should have ended 30 years ago. i had every expectation that once he went on death row, it was done. whether he was executed or not, it was finished. but here we are . >> marc klaas. polly's father, calls this revictimization the issue. a recent criminal justice reform law that invalid certain sentencing enhancements. it may have opened the door to have cases like richard allen davis's reconsidered. >> this is a big deal, not just for mr. richard allen davis, but for others on death row in california. >> legal analyst steven clark says this will be a first test for the new law. >> will he get another shot at getting his death verdict overturned? even though the technical issue is only these prison priors, which only added 1 or 2 years to his sentence, klaas says it should be a wake up call for other victims families that hundreds of cases could be impacted by what

happens here. >> this case is the tip of the iceberg. it's going to happen again and again and again and again. and i'll tell you what's going to happen. in some instances, somebody is going to get out. >> richard allen davis was not present for the hearing. neither his attorneys nor the sonoma county prosecutors handling the case were willing to comment. >> i'm not going to make any statements on the record. >> it's affected my health. it's affected my mind. it affects everything. >> but for marc klaas, any resentencing is like reopening a wound. >> there's only one beneficiary from all of this. it's the guy on death row. it's the guy that murdered my kid. >> the next court appearance in this case is set for may 31st. that's the day the judge will decide whether this case is eligible for resentencing in santa clara county. ann rubin, ktvu, fox two news. >> santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen is taking steps to change the sentences of more than a dozen prison inmates, from death to life behind bars without parole. the da says the move comes four

years after the district attorney's office stopped using the death penalty. rosen said he lost faith in capital punishment in recent years. he called it an antiquated, racially biased, error prone system that deters nothing and costs the county millions of dollars. >> we're doing a few things. one, we're bringing finality to the case, finality to the victims. >> this is what's going to happen. this person is going to die in prison. and we're also able to then take the resources that we were using to defend these convictions. and apply them in other, more productive places in our office. >> if approved by the court, the move will affect 15 people who have been sentenced to death in santa clara county. the oldest case goes back as far as 1979 and is still being litigated. governor gavin newsom suspended executions in california in 2019. >> united airlines says one of its planes struck another's wingtip as it was taxiing into a gate at sfo. the airline says an airbus a3 19 from reno was parking at terminal three at

about 1030 last night when the two aircraft's wings collided. this is video from today of an aircraft that was not involved in the incident. nobody was hurt and the passengers got off the plane. normally the planes were taken out of service for inspection. it's unclear whether the ntsb will investigate. >> if it's just a minor dent or scrape, they can fix it. call a material called speed tape, which is a fancy adhesive that covers and makes a little more aerodynamic. but if it's structural, they may have to take the plane out of service. >> last week, two delta airbuses struck wingtips at the gate at the minneapolis airport, as did two jetblue airbuses in boston last february. >> more turbulent weather rolling across the bay area. this is a look at some video viewers sent to us from danville. you can see that hail was coming down in the east bay at about 4:00 this afternoon. meteorologist roberto gonzalez joins us now. roberto. that storm is still lingering. >> it certainly is. and it's just bull's eye right now on the

eastern portion of the bay area. we've already seen an inch of rain in some places around the danville area. let's take a look at our live radar at this time. and you see all the precipitation is right there. look at danville. mostly cloudy, but a little bit of light rain is moving in that area. the heaviest precipitation right now is over the livermore area. altamont pass back in through mountain house. you see that cell over the tracy area, a little bit of light snow around mount diablo, and you see that one bright yellow cell just pushing out of sunol. we also have the pink areas, which is the snow along the eastern foothills. and yet that big old lightning bolt that just popped up between patterson and newman. we have a lot of copious amount of rainfall right now in throughout i-5 heading north and south. and then now we do have the snow falling again in the mount hamilton area as we traverse on over to the peninsula. it's a hit and miss scattered light rain shower, but within the next 2 to 3 hours it

of that magnitude hit the northeast. that earthquake struck around 1030 this morning on the east coast. the epicenter was in new jersey, but was felt as far away as baltimore and philadelphia. fox's connor hansen has more. videos captured the earthquake, knocking pictures off of walls in

sterling pets. officials believe the epicenter of the 4.8 magnitude earthquake was near lebanon, new jersey. it's the first time a tremor with that strength has hit the tri-state area in more than a century. >> it felt like the pavement was giving way under me, and i didn't know what to think or what to do. >> the epicenter was about an hour's drive from new york city. earth cam footage captured lady liberty shaking. the quake rattled a united nations meeting and tourists in times square were taken by surprise. >> right under our feet, we felt the shaking. we were just nervous, like, what's going on? because, you know, we haven't heard. we haven't had an earthquake in so long. >> new york city officials say they're checking buildings and infrastructure for any damage. >> tunnels are very resilient for seismic impacts, so they move with the ground. so again, it's a hands on inspection. we go and do visual inspection to see if there are any any damages. >> geophysicists say fault lines run through new york. but right now there's no reason to worry.

>> i believe authorities are in the scene. they are examining the situation, and all the scientists are closely working with them to gather any information. that's, that's needed to, to make any further decisions. officials are warning that aftershocks could continue over the next week or so in new york. >> connor hansen, katie icu, fox two news. >> johnson and johnson is firming up its offer to purchase the santa clara based biotech company shockwave medical. johnson and johnson announced today it will spend $335 per share in cash for shockwave, valuing the santa clara company at roughly $13 billion. shockwave specializes in making cardiovascular devices that use sonic pressure waves to crack lesions in arteries and restore blood flow. the deal still needs approval from regulators and shareholders. alarm over the use of anti-aging products by tweens is leading lawmakers to consider a ban in the state of

tells ktvu that officers received a call of a crash just before 450 this afternoon. this is where our ground crews are, you can see from their camera. officers arrived to the ashby avenue on ramp at interstate 80 to find a car crashed. you can see it there with a door open. a 911 caller indicated that a shooting may have led up to that crash. one person was hurt. it is unclear whether that person was hurt in the crash or was hit by gunfire. again, we have a crew on the ground here working this story. we'll bring you any more developments as they come. >> now to our other top stories. the sole survivor of the half moon bay shooting 14 months ago is suing the farm where it happened. attorneys today filed against california terra gardens

. the suit claims the farm failed to protect its workers ahead of the incident that killed seven people. >> hundreds of workers are expected to lose their jobs once the a's moved to sacramento. the team is already notified some office staff that they'll be laid off. game day employees will also be out of work. that includes food and beverage staff , ushers, and security. many of the jobs are union jobs that pay well over minimum wage. >> giants baseball is back in san francisco, and they played at a sold out oracle park today in their home opener against the san diego padres. the ballpark was dressed up to welcome fans back, and they did not leave disappointed. the giants won 3 to 2 after a walk off double by tyler estrada, which scored matt chapman running all the way from first base. >> you're watching ktvu, fox two news at 630. president biden traveled to baltimore, maryland, today, one week after the deadly francis scott key bridge collapsed. >> he's urging congress to quickly approve federal funding to help with the building rebuild of the bridge. fox news rebecca castor is in maryland with more on the visit. >> as crews work to clear the

tons of debris from last week's bridge collapse. president biden is renewing his support for the city of baltimore. >> your nation has your back and i mean it. your nation has your back. >> president biden doubling down on his commitment for the federal government to spend whatever it takes to reopen the port of baltimore. on friday, he toured the site of that deadly bridge collapse and later met with the relatives of six construction workers who died. >> i know a little bit about what it's like to lose a piece of your soul to get that phone call in the middle of the night to say, family members are gone. i've been there. >> the francis scott key bridge collapsed last tuesday after a cargo ship struck one of the support beams. the president is now urging congress to quickly authorize federal funds to rebuild the structure, which some experts estimate could cost at least $2 billion, no matter anyone's affiliation in public, private, federal, state, local, democrat, republican. >> we are all one team here for now. >> most operations at the port

are still shut down, and officials say that's costing millions in lost revenue every day and upending the supply chain. the army corps of engineers expects to open a limited access channel to allow larger cargo ships to flow in and out by the end of april. the legal fallout, though, could last years. >> a lot of parties are going to want to present claims and make sure someone that knows what they're doing, gets ahold of your case in a federal court filing, the ship's owner and operator denied fault and asked that any liability be capped at $43 million. >> and baltimore county, maryland rebecca castor, fox news. >> stocks rallied on wall street today on a surprisingly strong u.s. jobs report. but traders also found signs of hope that inflation is easing. the dow was up 307 points. the nasdaq gained 199 and the s&p was up 57

points. tech shares helped to fuel the rally, with shares of nvidia up nearly 2.5% and apple up half a percent. us employers added 303,000 workers to their payrolls in march, which was much more than the 200,000 economists had expected. with the nation's consumers continuing to spend, employers have kept hiring to meet consumer demand. the unemployment rate dipped to 3.8% from 3.9 in february. wages were up 4.1, the smallest year over year increase since mid 2021. james mcbride tells us. investors like what they're seeing and they're saying, you know, enough with all the worrying about when the fed is going to cut interest rates, let's look at what's happening. >> we've got a really hot economy. why is that consumer spending two thirds of our gdp on fire better than expected. wages are going up, which only adds to that. and then you have corporations posting really good earnings. >> mcbride also told us that labor participation has almost

returned to a pre-covid level, which is also good news for the economy. >> apple is getting more than 600 people from its payroll. it is the tech giant's largest layoff since before the pandemic. ktvu james torres has the details of the layoff and what's expected to happen next. >> for practically the entirety of the pandemic, apple avoided large mass layoffs. we saw that in the thousands. for other tech giants, apple is not immune to the realities of running a business. tech reporter ian scherr says while apple's layover numbers are much smaller, it's still a sign of the times. >> it's hard to tell exactly what apple is thinking, right? that's part of life following that company. but one of the things that's been pretty clear from a lot of the reporting is that that making a car is incredibly hard. >> experts suggest those employees were likely working on apple's self-driving car project, which had been dubbed project titan, within the

company. apple scrapped those plans earlier this year after quietly working on it since 2014, 614 total positions are now eliminated from eight santa clara county offices. that's according to a filing with the employment development department. apple filed a worker adjustment and retraining notification, or a warn report, which was obtained by ktvu. it reveals hundreds of software, hardware and development engineers are laid off along with a handful of data scientists and machine shop managers. >> you know, there are hundreds of people who have been laid off from apple. it's far smaller than the thousands upon thousands of people we saw laid off from google and facebook and whatnot. so it may be that this is actually a sign that maybe this is the end of the layoffs. >> some of those employees may relocate to the company's artificial intelligence division . ktvu did reach out to apple

officers for their role in monday's deadly drone strikes that killed humanitarian workers in gaza. >> fox senior foreign correspondent foreign affairs correspondent greg palkot shares how the country is addressing what the white house called an unacceptable situation. >> the israeli military took steps on friday to hold itself accountable for the deadly strike on aid workers. earlier this week, two officers have

been dismissed and three others punished following drone attacks that killed seven workers delivering food to starving civilians. hamas and its allies say it was a deliberate attack. but in a new report, israel found it was a, quote, grave mistake stemming from a serious failure and the entire decision making process will now be reexamined. >> why did you pull the trigger thinking this was hamas? that's a thorough investigation done by a values based organization that is holding its people to a very high standard. >> the report was released just hours after israel's security cabinet approved a series of immediate steps to increase the flow of humanitarian aid and the biden administration welcoming that announcement. while also remaining skeptical about conditions at the gaza border. these are positive developments, but the real test is results, and that's what we're looking to see in the coming days and in the coming weeks, the report and the increase in aid shipments could be part of a broader push by israel to soften its stance
