12:06 pm
giants, apple is not immune to the realities of running a business. tech reporter ian scherr says. while apple's layover numbers are much smaller , it's still a sign of the times. >> it's hard to tell exactly what apple is thinking, right? that's part of life following that company. but one of the things that's been pretty clear from a lot of the reporting is that that making a car is incredibly hard. experts suggest those employees were likely working on apple's self-driving car project, which had been dubbed project titan, within the company. >> apple scrapped those plans earlier this year after quietly working on it since 2014, 614 total positions are now eliminated from eight santa clara county offices. that's according to a filing with the employment development department. apple filed a worker adjustment and retraining notification, or a warn report, which was obtained by ktvu. it
12:07 pm
reveals hundreds of software, hardware and development engineers are laid off, along with a handful of data scientists and machine shop managers. >> the one thing that i think a lot of people who watch the tech industry are trying to figure out is if this is the end of the layoffs, you know, there are hundreds of people who have been laid off from apple. that's far smaller than the thousands upon thousands of people we saw laid off from google and facebook and whatnot. so it may be that this is actually a sign that maybe this is the end of the layoffs. >> some of those employees may relocate to the company's artificial intelligence division, something scherr says makes sense. >> it's clear that making more complex, birx different type of products, like cars, is very hard. artificial intelligence, by comparison, is very much within the wheelhouse of apple making software, right? so in a

parts of the diablo range. as we head into the sierra, the snow continues here. the levels will be rising from 1500ft earlier this morning to back to about 3000ft, but the travel advisory for the west slope highway 50, as well as i-80, will go until 11:00 this evening. so we're not done just yet. even though we are enjoying a lot of sunshine out there compared to yesterday, 3:00 in the afternoon, the models pop up there. those scattered showers that we're talking about. so we could see some late day activity happen, could be over the east bay shore. it could be right over the peninsula. this is just a model. the takeaway here is we have that possibility. and if you're going to be out and about, do be prepared. you may get caught up in a shower, maybe an isolated thunderstorm because the air will be unstable enough to provide that as well into the evening hours. we dry out. right now saturday looks mainly dry, then a weak wave on sunday could bring us a few scattered showers as well, but it doesn't look like a big deal. yesterday was
12:20 pm
definitely the soggiest. here's a look at the afternoon highs over areas of oracle park in san francisco for today. game time one 3556 degrees expected with a northwest breeze to about 20mph. so a brisk, cool day out at the ballpark and a slim possibility of periods of rain there. although we had that live shot with christien kafton and wow, it looks gorgeous out there, at least with the blue skies. afternoon highs for today 5 to 10 degrees below average 59 in santa rosa, 56 in oakland, 58 over san jose and tomorrow morning with the drier air, the clearer skies, it is going to be a chilly one. in fact, we have a frost advisory for parts of the bay area for tomorrow morning, so a better look at the afternoon highs for today. what we can expect into the weekend, including that frost advisory coming up in just a little bit. >> rosemary. thank you. an american tourist is dead after an elephant attack on an african safari. what we're learning about the investigation as the family of one of the victims speaks
