utility bills are going up. there's now word about the compensation for the company's chief executive officer. >> and today is the home opener for the giants. we're live at oracle park with some of the new attractions for fans this season . >> from ktvu fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> good morning and welcome back to mornings on two. >> i'm allie rasmus and good morning i'm dave clark. it is friday. it's april 5th. do you know my friend rosemary oroczo? >> yes, because she's my friend too. oh, she's right here. >> oh, there you are, rosemary. >> good morning friends. happy friday to you. we do have a unsettled weather. we'll call it for today. it's a cold start out there under partly cloudy skies. and we're leaving in the possibility of scattered showers, giving you a view here over san francisco, where it is a fairly quiet at the moment, a little bit of a breeze along the coastline, but winds are generally light for most of the bay area at this hour, giving you a wide view of what's going
7:02 am
on out there. notice we still have a lot of moisture there just hanging off the coast. even picking up on some lightning strikes there off the coastline, as well as we move in a bit closer, we have to leave in the possibility of some of those pop up showers. it's not going to be like yesterday, but we are going to have on and off throughout the course of your friday. meanwhile, low snow levels remain in the sierra. all the way down to about auburn. i'm seeing that rain snow mix those snow levels will begin to climb today, but there is still an advisory for travel that goes until 11:00 this evening. for our friends that are thinking about heading up to tahoe for the weekend, it could remain very slick and hazardous, at least through today. meanwhile, here at home, in addition to some of that wet weather today, we're a lot chillier this morning down by ten degrees in oakland. many of us are in the 30s and 40s. santa rosa, good morning to you. at 38, the inner east bay 42 in livermore. i'll have a look at the afternoon highs. bitter details on the wet weather and when it's going to end. coming up in just a bit. >> sal ali, a quick check on traffic before we move on to the
7:03 am
day's news. you can see in the south bay there are still a couple of crashes that northbound 101 at trimble still has one of the lanes blocked, and farther south in 17 northbound direction at idlewild, they have partially closed one of the lanes there because of an earlier crash. let's look ahead to the other traffic cameras. if i can get them loaded here quickly. bear with me. so highway 24 and lafayette, things look good on this route. and we are going to go to the macarthur maze, because this is where an earlier problem in northbound 880, just at that 80 connector, there was an earlier crash. there's still, as you can see from the picture here, the tow truck and emergency crews at the scene. so just one lane of traffic is squeezing through at this point. 702 is the time and the countdown is on to the first pitch at giants opening day today, as excitement grows. ktvu bailey o'carroll is live at oracle park on the field this morning. bailey, what are you going to show us this time?
7:04 am
>> hey, ali. good morning. well, i want to talk a little bit about just the field conditions out here ahead of this first pitch. of course, this tarp still out here just in the last ten minutes or so, we have noticed the wind pick up a little bit. you can kind of see those wind pockets in that tarp, it's gotten a little bit chillier out, but the fog has gone away. so of course that means that it's cooled off a little bit, but nonetheless, no rain out here since we've been out since 4:00 this morning here at oracle park. so that is good news, of course, for the fans who are going to come out to this game later, the players who will be playing in it and us right now. now i want to bring in a special guest, shayna dom, the senior vice president of communications and community relations with the giants. how excited are you for opening day? >> it's opening day, right? we as we like to say in baseball it should be a national holiday. i think it is here in san francisco. we'll we'll say it is today, but super excited. i mean, this just to be out here, i know we were just talking
7:05 am
about what makes, you know, opening day so special. this will be my 25th season here at the giants. so 25th opening day. and believe it or not, coming out here and being with all of you guys, you know, first thing in the morning, driving across the bay bridge, seeing the lights on in the ballpark, it's a pretty special day. >> and what's been your favorite? you've been here for 25 years. what's become your favorite tradition? favorite part of opening day here at oracle park? i think being up early, i don't have to get you know, i appreciate what you guys do, but getting up early, coming in to the park, knowing that my family will be joining me, and a little while and that all of the fans coming together with their families, the generations of fans, the traditions, that everybody has and being together and everyone's in such a happy mood and excited to see each other again, because it's obviously been, a number of months. and to meet our new players, see our veteran players, and just start baseball . >> exactly. and, you know, maybe
7:06 am
you mentioned it. it should be a holiday. there might be a couple extra sick calls today. the first pitch is right in the middle of the day, but you talk about all the different generations of giants fans that are going to come out here and just how exciting it is to be back. i think a lot of people don't really realize all the preparation that goes into the planning, all the festivities that come along with an opening day. how long have you guys been planning this and what's gone into it? >> well, i'd like to say you start, you know, when the season ends, in september, october, you start planning for the next season and even before that. but we've been planning for months and in earnest probably since january. and there's a group of people that come together and thinking about everything from, you know, the anthem to the first pitch, obviously, as you can see, we've got, this is the part of getting ready for opening day, is making sure the field stays dry and ready to go for the 135 start, but coming together and planning, you know, the flyovers and the anthem and
7:07 am
the first pitch, who's going to throw out the first pitch and who's going to do play ball, so lots, lots of thought going into it and how to make this a, a special day because opening day is so special and, you know, and, and the introductions of the players, so lots of great things that go into it. >> well, it is certainly a special day, especially here in san francisco, as you mentioned, they're getting ready, getting this field ready, working to make sure it is in perfect condition. come first pitch again, first pitch will be thrown out here at oracle park at 135 this afternoon. expecting a sellout crowd here at oracle park. we'll send it back to you guys in the studio. >> all right. thank you bailey. well, if you are going to the game, you are encouraged to take mass transit. some of the largest local transportation agencies are running special services today. caltrain will provide an additional southbound train departing 15 minutes after the last out or when the train is full. the giants ferry departs from larkspur terminal at least 90 minutes before the first pitch. the ferry will then leave oracle half an hour after
7:08 am
the last out, and fans from the east bay can take bart into the city and stop at any of the downtown stations along market street. >> all right, our time is up. in zero seven, executives at pge received major compensations last year. the mercury news reports. the company's chief executive officer, patricia poppy, made 20% more in 2023 than the year before a filing with the securities and exchange commission shows. poppy is among five executive who received big returns last year, and this comes as customers are dealing with more rate hikes now, pg and e says executive compensation is tied to delivering improvements in safety operations and financial performance. well there's a new development today in one of the bay area's most infamous kidnapings. >> richard allen davis will ask a south bay judge to overturn his death sentence. davis was convicted of the 1993 abduction and murder of 12 year old polly klaas. she was taken from her
7:09 am
mother's petaluma home while having a slumber party with two friends. davis's attorneys will argue that his case should be reviewed due to a recent criminal justice reform law invalidating certain sentencing enhancements. polly's father, marc klaas, who became well known as a crime victim advocate, is furious. in a statement to the bay area news group, he says, quote, we had every expectation that the sentence of death recommended by the jury and imposed by judge thomas hastings, would keep him segregated from society for the rest of his life. he could not have been. we could not have been more wrong. end quote. the sole survivor of the deadly mass shooting in half moon bay is now suing the owners of the mushroom farm, where he worked. pedro felix romero says he was shot five times. his brother was shot and killed in that january 2023 shooting. romero has now filed suit against california terra gardens and its owner. the lawsuit says that the owners failed to protect the workers living on the property, and that the shooter, chunli zhao, had a
7:10 am
history of violence. in a statement, the law firm representing romero said in part, quote, pedro and jose are part of society's most vulnerable population. migrant farm workers living in poverty on the margins of our communities. these workers toil long hours in horrific conditions to put food on our tables. the owners have a responsibility to protect them from violence in their homes, end quote. >> our time is up zero nine today. president biden will go to baltimore. he will see firsthand the recovery effort after the recent bridge collapse there. the progress there has been slow. the shipping channel is still filled with wreckage. the cargo ship is still stuck in place after it crashed into the francis scott key bridge. the dive teams are operating with almost no visibility. they have not been able to find the bodies of four missing construction workers. >> the collapse of the bridge is so distinct and so severe with the metal that is so disfigured and so brought together and
7:11 am
pancaked, that it continues to make this mission extraordinarily complicated and dangerous for those who are conducting it. >> now, the crews there have been able to open a small channel around all of that wreckage. the u.s. army corps of engineers expects a bigger channel to be opened by the end of april, with full access restored by the end of may, and an investigation is underway in florida after a crane partially collapsed and fell on a bridge. look at these pictures. fire officials say the crane operator was in the process of raising the top part of that crane when it partially collapsed onto the fort lauderdale bridge. it happened yesterday about 430 in the afternoon. part of the crane crashed onto two cars, a tesla and a black car there. that worker fell to his death. three others were hurt. >> the port of oakland is taking steps to invest in new, cleaner technology powered by hydrogen in ports across california were
7:12 am
given a federal investment of $1.2 billion to set up hydrogen fuel projects at some of the biggest pieces of equipment at the port will soon be powered by pure hydrogen, and the exhaust from it will just be water vapor that will improve the air quality for people who live near the port. >> we have high incidences of lung cancer, cancer, asthma, health impacts that have occurred as a result of unfortunately, fossil fuels. >> california being california, we're also bold in our ambition and in our vision, and a big part of that is making sure that we're also a significant and clean economy. >> there are also plans to manufacture and distribute hydrogen fuels at the port. >> all right. our time is 711. layoffs at apple 600 bay area jobs are being cut. and we'll tell you why. the company managed to resist laying off trend layoff trends that have faced the rest of the tech industry for so long, and
7:13 am
sadness, disappointment, anger. >> we'll hear from oakland a's fans now that the
7:14 am
7:15 am
are not surprised. the team is now officially playing its final season in oakland, but they're
7:16 am
still angry and frustrated by the news about this. the team leaving town. ktvu is andre senior joins us live in studio. you have the reaction from fans both in oakland and their new home in sacramento, about 90 miles away. andre. >> yeah, the way up in sacramento haley good morning to you. clearly devastating loss here for loyal a's fans. they have now joined raider and warriors fans in watching the team they love. pack up and move out of oakland to another city. many heartbroken a's fans have been attending games at the coliseum since the team first moved to the bay area from kansas city back in 1968. paul miser is one of those longtime oakland a's super fans. he is also an author who has written extensively of the rich history of pro sports in oakland. he represents for generations of loyal a's fans. >> my dad took me to games i took my boys to games. now i'm taking my granddaughters. >> i think it's devastating, but it at least we have clarity and at least now we can look at what
7:17 am
the future is going to hold. >> at the same time, the a's move is creating a lot of excitement among baseball fans in sacramento. many believe the smaller minor league ballpark that is the home to the sacramento river cats might be a good fit for the a's. last year, the athletics averaged just 10,000 fans at a game at the 63,000 seat oakland coliseum. >> much more intimate setting, for sure. i mean, i think it's about 14,000 people in the stadium there, and i imagine they'll probably fill it up for most of their games. >> revenue wise. it's going to be incredible. for us, that means that there's going to be games at the stadium probably every day of the week. between the river cats and the a's. >> yeah, good for businesses in that area. sacramento fans also hope the temporary move for the a's could mean the city could become home to a permanent major league baseball expansion team in the future, baseball commissioner rob manfred has said. big league baseball is now making plans to expand from 30 to 32 teams, but it's still very early in that process. and even
7:18 am
the owner of the river cats says this move by the a's is no guarantee sacramento will actually get a team. many a's fans are also pushing mlb to bring an expansion team to a new ownership group here in oakland. dave, interesting, andre. >> thank you. at the same time, many jobs are going to be lost as the a's leave oakland and the bay area. >> there are going to be some reductions in our in our staffing. you know, that's just it's part of the situation. it's a sad thing. and, you know, i we have a great group of people with the a's. and they've done a great job in putting a great product out there. but that is something that comes with this. now a's president dave kaval also said those employees will be getting severance packages and there will be help to find new jobs. >> but the union that represents hundreds of food and beverage workers at the coliseum accused the a's of abandoning its staff, and many have worked at the coliseum for more than 20 years now. in a statement, unite here local two said in part, quote, the majority are african

american. these workers have made thousands of game days enjoyable for countless fans, as their union wages and benefits have supported the workers, families and communities, and their work has helped make john fisher even richer. >> well, it has now been a month since election day, and it is official there is a tie for second place in the race to succeed. retiring south bay congresswoman anna eshoo, silicon valley assembly member evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian received the exact same number of votes. that means both simitian and low will face off against former san jose mayor sam liccardo in the general election for the district 16 race. >> call it what you will, you know, it's been a wild ride, a roller coaster, a cliffhanger, but, you know, a win is a win is a win. we're in in the march 5th primary, just 37% of registered voters submitted a ballot. >> now, low and simitian say they're getting ready to ask voters for their support one
7:20 am
more time. >> we're hopeful that now, with the longer period of time that you can't sit on the sideline, this is it. this is the presidential election. there's not another shot. >> in a tweet, liccardo reacted to the tie last night, writing, quote, given the extraordinarily unlikely outcome of today's vote tally after my first place finish, two of my competitors have tied for second after more than 180,000 votes were cast. it is a good time to buy a lottery ticket. >> our time now 719 today, san francisco supervisor aaron peskin will file the paperwork to run for mayor of san francisco. he'll join a field of candidates that's already crowded. >> and i am the only person in this race who is running as a liberal and as a progressive. >> peskin has been a san francisco supervisor 17 years now. he's the president of the board of supervisors. he says he'll use his experience as a policy maker to help the city deal with homelessness, the fentanyl drug crisis and affordable housing.
7:21 am
>> i believe i'm a supervisor who knows how, and i want to be a mayor who makes san francisco the city that knows how. again >> now. tomorrow, peskin will make his official announcement that he's running for mayor at portsmouth square in chinatown. now, the other candidates running for mayor include incumbent mayor london breed supervisor asha safai, former supervisor mark farrell, and philanthropist daniel laurie. >> 720 now and let's check on traffic at this hour. you can see overall in the east bay, the commute looking pretty good, relatively light compared to other days of the week this week. but you'll note that problem that stall and that cleared crash that they're still working on at the macarthur maze. you can see it right there. this is a and the northbound direction of 880, where it connects with eastbound 80. there's still a scene there and traffic is just squeezing through. it looks like one lane at a time. so expect the backup to go on beyond the macarthur

maze to eight 8580 as well. here is 880 in oakland. this stretch of 880 by the coliseum looks good in both directions. let's take a look at highway 24 and lafayette. no problems there towards the caldecott and a relatively smooth drive on highway four westbound in bay point. time now is 721. rosemary oroczo has us covered with weather. yes. good morning ali. happy friday to all of you. if you are stepping out, you may need a water resistant jacket and make it a thick one. >> it's a chilly start, giving you a live look here over at san francisco where we are enjoying a partly sunny, partly cloudy skies this morning. but wow, there's a chill in the air. let's take a look at some of the rainfall amounts from the last 24 hours or so. we did well anywhere from more than half inch reported in san francisco to almost an inch at boulder creek in the santa cruz mountains. this is still going to bring us a little bit of rain today. on and off. scattered showers. not nothing like what
7:23 am
we had yesterday. all that steady rain for the most part, today is going to be more about breaks and then just on and off. but if you look closely, you can see lightning strikes there. unstable air remains in control or intact, i should say, which means we are going to have the possibility of maybe even some pop up thunderstorms into the afternoon. you notice there wasn't much going on. we're already into 6:00, but as this scoots down along the coastline while it's pushing east, we do have to call for that possibility. saturday looks mainly dry. sunday there's another weak wave that wants to move through. there's a look at early sunday morning. we may have a few scattered showers with us as well. and the cool conditions going to remain through the weekend. i'll show you that in the extended forecast outside right now, the winds are generally light and oakland as well as napa concord reporting calm conditions. novato a little bit of a breeze for you there, and there's a breeze along the coastline and into san francisco this morning. a chilly 46 in san francisco, even colder than that in napa
7:24 am
this morning, 38 degrees tomorrow morning. we are going to likely have those frost advisory for parts of the bay area. it's just going to be that chilly. our afternoon highs for today on the cool side 56 in san francisco, upper 50s in concord, 58 over san jose. your extended forecast here showing you temperatures nudge ever so subtly as we get into saturday. perhaps a tad warmer on sunday. then we get into the good stuff, at least if you like mostly sunny skies and 70s those are coming our way. we have to wait until monday back to you. >> all right. looking forward to it. thanks, rosemary. san francisco city leaders say their efforts to reduce crime are working. we'll take a look at the latest numbers on break ins and other types of crime in san francisco. >> also, the doctor in the south bay who just came back om

7:28 am
will be their final event of the spring, but they're hoping to hold another fundraiser later this year. >> well, the israeli military fired two officers for their involvement. their roles in the drone strikes in gaza that killed seven aid workers, the military said an investigation found that those officers mishandled critical information and they violated. the army's rules of engagement. the seven workers were there with world central kitchen. they were delivering food to the population of gaza. >> state lawmakers and the governor have announced a deal to reduce the budget shortfall. under yesterday's announcement, california democratic leaders announced $17 billion in spending cuts, delays and deferrals. that includes one time spending cuts to education and climate programs. it also defers spending on public transit and facilities improvements for preschools. assembly leaders hope to introduce a formal bill on the budget by next week. >> our time now 728 golden gate park a big milestone that's

a native. we have details of the jobs being cut in the south bay, and we're only six hours away from the start of the giants home opener. we're going to take you live to san francisco and oracle park and get a preview of today's home opener from ktvu. >> fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> good morning and welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> i'm allie rasmus. it is friday, april 5th. it is a chilly one out there this morning. rosemary i was telling steve earlier this morning. i packed up my winter coats and then this weekend i had to get them all back out again. >> unpacked. >> i know i refused to pull out the boots, but. dave, can you let mother nature know that winter is over? >> you're right. >> she's not listening to my calls. good morning to both of you. happy friday. we do have
7:33 am
scattered showers still in the forecast for today. it's not going to be like yesterday. we'll definitely get more breaks out there, but still a bit of unsettled weather to go. and as we mentioned a moment ago, it is a chilly start with temperatures in the 30s and 40s for the afternoon. we are also going to remain below average temperatures struggling in the 50s. now if you're lucky enough to get out to see the giants game this afternoon at oracle park, we will call for the possibility of a few sprinkles. so maybe a water resistant to jacket would be a good idea. and the ball cap is going to be cool. it's going to be breezy. a better look at what we can expect for today and the weekend. coming up in just a moment. let's check on traffic with ali. quick check of the roads at this hour. >> you still have that problem at the macarthur maze, which we'll show you a live picture of in just a second. but note how it is creating some slowdowns all along the eastshore freeway and that eastbound westbound 80 corridor, even though this tie up is in the eastbound direction. let's show you what we are talking about. and this is the mess. so it looks like
7:34 am
something just happened in the eastbound direction of the east shore freeway, because earlier there was this problem that you see there with clearing out an earlier crash. and it looks like the chp is doing a traffic break . all traffic on northbound 880 is at a complete stop. and it looks like something has just happened in the east shore freeway, the eastbound direction of 80 down here to tie up this traffic as well. so we'll get some more information on it. taking a look at the toll plaza traffic here is very light. probably because in those other two spots we just showed you, everything is backed up. here's 280 in san jose in the northbound direction, a little busier than in the southbound direction, but overall, no major issues to tell you about on this stretch of roadway. 733 dave. >> all right. well, more than 600 workers at apple just received layoff notices. it's the latest round of tech worker layoffs here in the bay area. >> ktvu is james torres here to tell us what we know about why apple may be doing this and how we're learning about it? yeah we're hearing apple not immune to these layoffs that we've been seeing for months now for
7:35 am
practically the entirety of the pandemic, apple seemingly avoided large mass layoffs. >> we saw that in the thousands for other tech giants, but while apple's numbers are much smaller, tech experts say it's still a sign of the times and insight into what it takes to run this kind of business. it's mostly spelled out in state records, according to california's employment development department. apple notified its employees of a layoff last week. the company filed a working adjustment and retraining notification, also known as a warn report, with the edd and those records show 614 apple employees were told they are being let go from eight offices in santa clara county. the question now is for those employees and the industry, what's next? >> the one thing that i think a lot of people who watch the tech industry are trying to figure out is if this is the end of the layoffs, you know, there are hundreds of people who have been laid off from apple that's far
7:36 am
smaller than the thousands upon thousands of people we saw laid off from google and facebook and whatnot. so it may be that this is actually a sign that maybe this is the end of the layoffs, but make no mistake, there are still hundreds of people who are now going to be searching for a job, and those experts suggest those employees were likely working on apple's self-driving car project, which had been dubbed project titan within the company. >> apple scrapped those plans earlier this year after quietly working on it since 2014. apple also holds a bit of a reputation for usually making an effort to move people from failed projects to other departments. there are some reports that some of those laid off employees may be working on the company's artificial intelligence or robotics units, according to state records. those layoffs will go into effect at the end of may. ali. >> all right. thank you. >> james. >> artificial intelligence engineers at tesla are getting a
7:37 am
raise to keep them from going to other competitors. ceo's ceo elon musk says that chatgpt maker openai has been aggressively recruiting the ev company's engineers with big compensation offers in a series of social media posts, the billionaire said the competition for ai engineers is the craziest talent war he's ever seen. >> our time now. 736 where we are counting down to the start of today's home opener for the san francisco giants at oracle park. it's happening this afternoon. ktvu bailey o'carroll has been out there down on the field at the ballpark for hours. bailey, good morning. >> good morning dave. that's right. we've kind of been able to watch in real time as they prep this field in time for that first pitch to be thrown out later this afternoon. i want to move out of the way here so you can kind of see what they're doing right now. of course, heavy rains overnight here in san francisco actually, so loud it woke me up in the middle of the night. thank goodness they
7:38 am
have this tarp out that caught a lot of that water, a lot of that rain that fell right now, these grounds crews are working to kind of brush that rainwater off this tarp. but as you can tell, the wind has kind of picked up here recently. so you can see it kind of rippling under this tarp. and so it's actually caused some of that rainwater to, move on to the field on its own, making these, field crews. job just a teeny bit easier this morning. a little bit less water that they have to worry about wiping off from these tarps. but, people, fans very excited ahead of this opening day, the giants home opener. and for this first pitch to be thrown out today, i spoke with maybe some of the biggest giants fans around. logan webb's grandmothers. now logan, of course not pitching today, but that does not mean his two grandmas, jan and patty, who happened to be best friends and also roommates, will not be watching this game. logan actually calls them the team grandmas. they are at every game
7:39 am
that he pitches at, and boy are they excited for this new season and all these new faces that love to watch the pitching. >> and this year the hitting. it's like we have a full team. yeah the pitching, all the new pitchers that we have, it's been wonderful to watch that. and of course the hitting and you can even see the camaraderie amongst all of the players. it's just such a joy to see. everybody seems to be happy. >> all right. they told me one of the things that logan helped implement throughout spring training and into this new season, because of the new coaching staff and all of the new players, is that everybody shakes hands in the morning when they get into the clubhouse. the grandma says it's a small thing, but makes a big difference when it comes to these guys feeling welcome here. and two other guys that we want to welcome out to oracle park on this opening day. i think we have zoomed in on steve paulson and sal, who just arrived here. they're working to
7:40 am
