another nail in the coffin for oakland. >> i mean, we've lost so many, like, great sports teams. >> more disappointing point for oakland a's fans. the team announcing today it will call sacramento the sacramento area home for at least the next three years. >> this is ktvu icu fox two news at 730. >> well the a's will play in a minor league ballpark in west sacramento until the team's las vegas stadium is ready. thanks so much for tuning in tonight. i'm heather holmes. despite last ditch efforts to try to keep the a's in oakland, at least for a little while longer, the team's days at the coliseum are now numbered and fans, well, they are feeling renewed disloyalty. >> i'm upset about it because it's like we're not going to have no teams. we're the teams going first. you know, the raiders in vegas and then the a's leaving now. like we're not going to have nothing in a minute. >> a lot of people weighing in on the relocation, including andy dolich. he's an executive with the team or was from 1980

to 1994. and here's what he told us earlier today on the four. >> i'm not surprised, but i'm saddened. just as the 80 million people that have come through the turnstiles to see the green and gold play since they moved to oakland in 1968, being sold out to somebody that only cares about the green of money and the gold of the increased value of this franchise. john fisher. >> ouch. dolich. doesn't mince words, does he? and that displeasure with the a's owner is being echoed tonight by a lot of fans. our crystal bailey with more on today's announcement. and that final nail in the coffin for any remaining hopes of the team sticking around here. >> well, heather, this has been a long time coming, but today oakland sports fans are hanging up their a's hats in defeat as they lose yet another franchise here in the town. >> it's a loss. it's a loss that we're feeling a devastating loss for fans who've given their heart and soul to the a's for decades.

>> my dad took me to games. i took my boys to games. now i'm taking my granddaughters. >> the a's are playing their last season in oakland before they pack their bags for sacramento, leaving behind a sports legacy in oakland that cut across barriers of race and culture. >> there was a legacy here that if you were a good ball player in oakland, you could make it anywhere. >> paul breck eisner is a super fan and an author who wrote about local sports in oakland, and the impact left behind on the children and the legends. oakland created. >> there's a lot of, athletes like dave stewart and rickey henderson, those kind of kids that played in the shadow of the coliseum. >> and with the loss of a third franchise in five years, fans are saying good riddance to the a's owner. >> john fisher doesn't realize what he's losing, but he never knew what he had the greatest place on earth. >> look at that. >> it's beautiful. >> with the team in the process of taking part, ownership of the coliseum, the future of the

venue is still uncertain as the city is negotiating with the team to sell their portion to a developer. >> i assume there's no chance you'll go to sac for a game? >> no. hell no. >> fans say they'll continue protesting outside games this season, and they're shifting their support to the new team. the ballers. >> i think it's devastating, but it at least we have clarity. and at least now we can look at what the future is going to hold. >> city officials say they're still fighting for an expansion team to call oakland home. >> this isn't the end of pro sports in the town. the roots are here, the soul are here. the spiders are here, and the ballers are here. and we're going to, you know, i think we're going to take the torch and begin a new chapter for sports in oakland. >> and fans say they will attend the last a's game at the coliseum for nostalgia. but the bees are stepping up to the plate. they're hosting tryouts on saturday and opening day at raymond park is in west oakland just a couple of months away, so folks are trying to stay positive about the future of

oakland sports. heather. >> yeah, but really disappointing to see a team that had such a legacy here in oakland. now officially part of its past. thanks so much. appreciate it. well, there is this tonight from oakland mayor shengtao. she says, quote, oakland offered a deal that was fair to the a's and was fiscally responsible for the city. the statement goes on to say that they wish the a's the best and will continue the conversation with them on facilitating the sale of their share of the coliseum site. the city of oakland will now focus on advancing, redeveloping efforts at the coliseum, says the mayor. sacramento mayor darrell steinberg, calling the a's temporary move the stuff of dreams for his city, but expressed sympathy for oaklanders. >> oakland is a great city, and it does not deserve to lose its team. it doesn't deserve to lose their teams. these decisions were made separate and apart from anything to do with sacramento and i am joined.

>> but the mayor and other city leaders there say that they hope to build on that momentum, that the team's presence will provide people an ask, will this be on it? >> an audition for sacramento as it continues to grow and attract more, including the potential for future major league baseball expansion? and my answer is you bet it will be an audition. >> the mayor added that the decision ten years ago to build the golden one center for the sacramento kings helped to make the city attractive to the a's in san francisco. caltrain is making sure that baseball fans can easily get to giants games this season. the agency says. for weekday evening and all weekend games, it will provide an additional southbound train that will depart 15 minutes after the last out, or when the train is full, the train will

run express to the millbrae station before making all local stops there to the san jose diridon station. caltrain is adding this extra train for tomorrow's home opener there at oracle park. when the giants take on the padres first pitch, kt will have special coverage throughout the day. before the game, we will have live interviews and weather from oracle park and then the aften will have highlights and reaction from fans as expectations are quite high this season. for those retooled giants. good luck tomorrow. okay, now to our bay area weather and boy it felt a little bit like winter today in parts of the bay area. if you take a look at this video, you can actually see snow visible right there on the top of crane ridge. this is in the east bay thanks to darcy kent there in livermore for sending us this video. let's talk more about today's weather and what we can expect for the rest of the week with our meteorologist, roberta gonzalez. roberta >> where else? heather. but in northern california, and particularly right here in the bay area, are you able to see

darcy kent vineyards? right. and then the mountain range behind it with all the snow, it's crane mountain and then right below it is crane ridge. and boy, just a glorious side. this is another beautiful sight. only in the bay area. now the main tower there stands 746ft tall at the golden gate bridge, and the clouds are not obscuring it, but it is mostly cloudy, and we do have plentiful rain showers filling back in around the bay area again. in fact, i'm picking up some snow at mount tamalpais. in the east bay we have snow that has fallen at mount diablo as well, and on the eastern foothills around the area picked up a thunderstorm just outside of tracy just about a half hour ago. got a little bit of a break around the sunnyvale area, but we have picked up snow in the mount hamilton area and then thunderstorms have been prominent anywhere between morgan hill and gilroy. it's raining around the peninsula, including san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge. now it's now 50, in santa rosa. i think that's about the highest temperature they have

experienced all day long. the winds are still breezy and with those winds and the cold temperatures, it is raw outside. that area of low pressure is going to be out of here. but the core still causing a lot of instability, unsettled air mass. so that's what you can count on for your friday for the giants game. mainly a little cool and blustery. dress in layers. a stray shower, certainly possible. 30s and 40s tonight 36 degrees and throughout cotati and windsor 60 degrees. it's about as good as it gets tomorrow around the san jose and santa rosa area. otherwise we're taking a look at this fair skies saturday and a chance of rain returning by sunday. spring on monday. >> okay, looking forward to that monday forecast. thanks so much, roberta. and new at 730 tonight, two people facing charges after san bruno police say they tried to steal a catalytic converter before running fofcers monday morning. detectiveser called to a home. this was near milton and florida, where two people tried tsteal a catalytic converter. when the

suspects were confronted, they pointed a gun at the victim and ordered that that rson go back into theome. as officers continue their investigation. well, they found a w s nearly a mile away, matching the description of the suspect vehicle provided by the car owner. police say they tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspects took off, speeding down the highway and throwing objects at officers. eventually, though, detectives were able to stop and arrest the suspects. in san mateo, police say they found stolen catalytic converters inside the suspect's suv. the 244 year old suspects now facing several charges, including grand theft and evading an officer. san francisco mayor london breed in a tough reelection fight, now touting some new data showing that crime is dropping in the city. quick to comment, of course. challenges for breed seat ktvu christian captain has that. and what some residents are saying in a city that has had more than its fair share of headlines about crime, the latest data show that crime in

san francisco is dropping the mayor's office, releasing statistics showing property crime is down 32% over the first three months of last year, and violent crime is down 14, including zero homicides in the month of february. >> every arrow is pointing down whether it's burglaries, car break ins, you name it, rapes. >> anything that's happening in a major city like san francisco, it's been incredible. >> the mayor's office credits the city's collaboration with state and federal law enforcement partners and a district attorney's office that holds criminals accountable once they're arrested. we are putting everything that we have at our disposal to good use. >> and the numbers, the data reflected, ktvu reached out to those challenging the mayor for her seat in november. >> former interim mayor mark farrell released a statement reading in part, quote, for many san franciscans, the anemic progress that the mayor continues to tout is too little, too late. we need a mayor that will deliver real results and change, and that is what i will do on day one. daniel lurie also

released a statement reading, quote, san francisco needs a mayor that cares about your safety every day, not just in an election year. those who live and work in san francisco are also weighing in about whether they're seeing those signs that the streets are safer. >> my sense is that that's true, that that data is borne out in my personal experience, i have not felt that extreme threat or concern in a long time. i think it was worse during covid. i think there were times when it felt really scary to be out on the streets. >> in terms of safety. i still feel pretty safe. to be honest. i think a lot of people mind their business. if you mind their own. but, i haven't seen so much change, to be honest. >> the mayor's office says it expects crime to continue to trend downward, especially in light of proposition e, which passed just last month. and would allow police to use new technology to track down criminals in san francisco. christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news and stay right with us for

public spaces is celebrating a big birthday. today is the 154th anniversary since the founding of golden gate park. mayor london breed and other city officials kicking off that celebration earlier today at the conservatory of flowers by the way, it was the first building erected in the park back in 1879. the event included entertainment activities and, of course, the cutting of a birthday cake. let's talk more about the sprawling park with phil ginsberg, general manager of the san francisco recreation and park department. phil it's always a pleasure to see you this park. more than 1000 acres. i mean, it is really hard to imagine san francisco without golden gate park. >> it is. thank you. heather. happy birthday, golden gate park. this park is part of the city's soul. it's its lungs. it's in many respects, its heartbeat. it is the keeper of san francisco's story. and it is just a treasure. yeah. >> and this area for people at home, they may not know this was

once miles and miles of sand dunes, and there were doubts that a park could actually be built there. >> this park was a horticultural miracle. back around the gold rush hour, founding mostly fathers decided that san francisco needed a great park, and they brought the world's most prominent landscape architect, frederick olmsted, out to see this particular space, wind, sandy dunes. and frederick olmsted said, sorry, you can't build a park here. and he left. and then, william hammond hall, the city's engineer and a gentleman by the name of john mclaren, figured it out. >> yeah. and we are so grateful that they did. phil, if you can, though for a moment, just share some of the lesser known facts about the park, including more about the 25 year old who designed it. >> well, i mean, that was william hammond hall and john mclaren who designed it. and, it is, was, visited by about 25 million people a year. it has,

if anybody's ever been to the panhandle. the panhandle was is the little park that's right off of the main section of golden gate park in the panhandle. that is a botanical, basically a botanical garden where mr. mclaren and mr. hall planted over 80 different species of trees to figure out what would grow, obviously, we've got our bison paddock. we have the gardens of golden gate park, the conservatory where the conservatory of flowers, was built in 1871, was originally a casino, there's all kinds of fun facts, in this park. it's really just extraordinary. >> yeah, it really is. and a lot of firsts here. i was reading that it was actually home to the very first public playground in the country are really important. >> one, you've you've read up. well, heather, yes. the children's playground was actually the first children's playground ever constructed in the united states, we also held the first world's fair west of the mississippi in 1894, and

then we held the pan pacific international exposition a little bit later, it's a it's brilliant. and in a year or two, it will be the largest urban park ever constructed that will operate on reclaimed or recycled water. that is, we're also thinking we're also thinking about the future, too. >> that's what i was going to say. that really is amazing to think about, to think about that. thank you so much, phil, for coming on and sharing some of that history and the love that we all have for golden gate park. really appreciate you taking the time tonight. >> my pleasure. we have a lot of civic pride. >> yeah. all right. have a good one. >> i think the dynamics have changed pretty dramatically, and i think it now affects what will happen over the next seven months. >> okay. another candidate jumps into the race for san francisco mayor. we talk with a political expert about how aaron peskin will change the campaign. and every vote has been counted. and no. doubt about it, every vote

ace in the race to succeed retiring south bay congresswoman anna eshoo. silicon valley assembly member evan lowe in santa clara county supervisor joe simitian, each have exactly 30,249 votes. that's incredible. there's been this has been a tight race the whole time that votes were counted. as the two battled to see who will face former san jose mayor sam liccardo in the november election. now, lowe's says the election has been a roller coaster. i am looking forward to getting a little bit of shut eye and then right after that, getting right back on the campaign trail, continuing the momentum, earning the trust and the respect and the votes of the incredible voters of

congressional district 16. >> and if anything shows every vote count. >> lowe says he's hoping and anticipating more voter turnout in the general election. tonight at ten, we'll hear from district 16 candidate joe simitian as well. on this close race. again, it's the top two vote getters that advance. but in this case, it will be the top three. because of that tie. okay, now to the growing field of candidates for san francisco mayor with board of supervisors president aaron peskin formally announcing that he is running. other candidates challenging mayor london breed include former san francisco supervisor and interim mayor mark farrell, nonprofit founder daniel lurie and current supervisor asha saffy. earlier today on the four, i spoke with corey cook, vice provost at saint mary's college, about how peskin s entry shakes up this race. well completely changes the math. >> so you imagine now with five major candidates in the race, the question is, can any of these candidates get to 30% of first place votes if so, that

might be, you know, the way of getting to the to winning the office. >> i love and cherish san francisco now. >> cook also believes peskin, wading into the race, changes the dynamics of the campaign. since peskin is a more progressive candidate and he also represents chinatown. cook adds that no mayor has ever won the race without the support of chinatown. work from a bay area photographer is set to be recognized by the us postal service. coming up, we'll take a closer look at the stamps featuring photographs by ansel adams. then later tonight on the 10:00 news, pacifica police releasing body camera footage of that deadly police shooting of a woman who had shot and wounded her son. plus one east bay city has been fined for air quality violations at its old landfill site. we're going to be looking into that and a lot more
