greg palkot, ktvu, fox two news. >> this is katie icu, fox two news at six. >> emergency crews ushering a convoy of drivers to safety. this afternoon as work continues to shore up parts of highway one after heavy rains caused a portion of the scenic roadway to collapse near big sur this weekend. that crumbling section of highway one has created a logistical nightmare for caltrans and for residents. good evening. i'm greg lee and i'm julie julie haener. >> as many as 2000 people were stranded over the weekend. now they are being escorted slowly through that area. >> ktvu is anne rubin traveled to big sur to show us the situation. >> enrique uribe had no idea he'd be stuck, but after a dob in big sur this morning, he is. >> i did not. not until i was, until i got to here, to the sign, until i got a notification saying, hey, it's closed. and i'm like, oh man. and we're like a mile away. and we're like, oh, well, so here we are, stuck now

closed, because this section of highway one, just a half mile from the famous bixby bridge, has fallen away. >> it happened after a round of wet weather and high waves on saturday. >> at the present time, we're really discouraging any visitors from coming down here until until it's deemed safe. >> state parks in the area are now closed campers money will be refunded, but it is a big blow to big sur that had yet to recover from last year's landslides and road closures. >> for the business people, it's horrible. >> right now, only residents and essential workers are allowed through and only twice a day at eight and four, martin hubbs, who lives here, ventured to the grocery store in case things get even worse. you never know. >> it's raining on thursday, so i might just say it's too dangerous and boom! so i got my tea, my milk, and i'm set up. >> caltrans crews do have a plan for a temporary fix in place. it involves expanding the shoulder and placing 500ft of concrete barriers along the center line of the roadway. no word how long a more permanent fix might take, or how long this inconvenience

to drivers. might last. >> rather be at work or at home than here, caltrans says. >> the twice a day convoys will go on indefinitely unless there's inclement weather or site conditions change near big sur, anne rubin, ktvu, fox two news well, bart service along the richmond line is back up and running after a passenger was hit by a train this afternoon, the berkeley fire department says a man in a wheelchair at the north berkeley station went off the platform and onto the tracks, and was then hit by a bart train at about 330 this afternoon, the victim's caretaker says the victim was taken to the hospital. >> bart service on the richmond line was suspended for nearly an hour. ac transit provided service during that period. the extent of the victim's injuries is still unclear tonight. >> a difficult and dangerous rescue in marin county. hey! don't let go, man. >> don't let go. okay don't let go. place your left hand in

here, brother. >> dramatic video of a sonoma county helicopter crew rescuing a man hanging from a cliff. the sheriff's office says they got a call around 8:00 sunday night from marin county, requesting help in rescuing a man who had fallen 50ft down from a trail in the golden gate. recreation area. a tactical flight officer descended from the helicopter, grabbed the man and placed him into a rescue device. they were both then airlifted to safety. the man was treated for minor injuries. >> friends and family are mourning the death of a bay area couple killed in a small plane crash. their deaths considered a big blow to silicon valley's venture capitalist landscape. the single engine turboprop plane went down in truce over the weekend. federal investigors e still trying to find a cause. ktvu is joey horta spoke with friends of the couple about their loss. >> federal investigators are working to determine the cause of a deadly plane crash in truckee on saturday night, where wreckage can be seen scattered

oakland airport with more on this named debate. crystal >> well, greg, i want to start by saying that nothing is official until the port of oakland board formally votes. but the san francisco airport wants to say on the record that this will be very confusing for travelers. they also say there are other ways to improve name recognition and business here at the oakland airport. oakland international airport might be renamed san francisco bay oakland international airport. the port of oakland saying it will attract more business to the airport because people don't realize the oakland airport is a convenient option. but sfo officials oppose the name change. i can certainly understand the interest in growing business, but we don't think putting san francisco at the front end of an airport in oakland is the way to do it. >> oakland is the name of the city, and just because people don't know the name of the city doesn't mean you should change the name of the airport.

>> sfo says the name would be misleading and could cause confusion for their travelers who don't know the bay area. well, we would hate to see a situation where a traveler books thinking that they're going to one location, and then only when they land do they realize that they're somewhere else that they hadn't intended to go to. but there are nearly 20 organizations and city leaders who think it will help oakland. >> anytime that i'm flying to houston, there are more airport options. same thing with washington dc. same thing with new york. so any traveler with us living in an internet world, if you do just a tiny bit of research, you can figure out that it's two separate airports. >> in a joint statement from the port of oakland and the airport, they acknowledged there will be differing opinions, but this could help boost oakland's economy. >> this new modification is about oakland. it's about bringing inbound travelers to oakland. our proposal is pro oakland and pro jobs. >> they also say the airport is

located on the san francisco bay, and want travelers to know they can get to top bay area destinations from the oakland airport. supporters say the name change will serve the entire east bay, which is often overlooked. >> what we find is that a lot of visitors that don't live in california don't know about the oakland airport, or even realize how close we are to the oakland airport. >> the port commission will hear public comments on the name change and vote at a meeting on april 11th. an sfo says that they are looking into taking legal action and collaborating with other groups that also oppose the name change, in an effort to persuade the board not to go through with it. but of course, the airport code. okay will remain the same either way. i'm live from the international airport here in oakland. greg, back to you. >> a lot of eyes on that vote in about a week and a half. crystal. thank you. >> the first piece of the collapsed key bridge in baltimore was lifted out of the water over the weekend. it took ten hours to do that. it is a

slow process that will have to be repeated over and over again to clear the important shipping lane. crews are now working around the clock. some alternative routes in and out of the port have now been reopened, but they are shallow and cannot get the large ships through. >> fox's connor hansen shows us leaders from the federal government, the state of maryland to the city of baltimore all agree the port needs to reopen as soon as humanly possible. days after one of baltimore's iconic bridges came crashing down into one of the country's most vital shipping lanes, it's still unclear how long it will take to reopen the channel. two massive cranes are being brought in to lift tons of steel and debris out of baltimore harbor. >> a portion of the bridge beneath the water has been described by by unified command as chaotic wreckage. >> president biden has vowed federal support and plans to visit the site of the collapsed bridge friday. >> we are going to do everything that we can to make sure that

that bridge gets back up so far, the department of transportation has allocated $60 million to get cleanup efforts started. >> the white house has been talking to the state of maryland about how much the entire project will cost. and how much more will be needed from congress. >> i also spoke with the speaker of the house, mike johnson, over the weekend, who understands the significance of this. >> in the meantime, hundreds of ships are being rerouted. >> i'm proud to announce that we do, in fact, have an 11 foot channel now just to the north, and thousands of workers at the closed port are unsure about their future. >> employment is to do everything that we can to make sure that that that we mitigate the anxiety and the harms of this moment, including the economic security of workers. >> it's still unclear how long it could take to build a new bridge. the francis scott key bridge took about five years to

tears spent weeks back in 2022 searching for the young woman until all hope was gone. her suspected killer died in a shootout with police and some of the young woman's remains were finally found. but her family still has questions. and now a new documentary that takes a look at the case is set to air later this month. alexis father spoke with ktvu tori gaines about what he hopes this documentary can reveal about his daughter's death. >> gwen gabe has been living a parent's nightmare for two years. >> it's hard. it's like being stabbed. >> a new documentary airing this month will document his family's search for his daughter, alexis

gabe. gabe was initially reported missing in 2022. hundreds of community members across the bay area assisted in the search for her. the case caught national attention when her ex-boyfriend and suspected killer died in a shooting with police in washington state after more than a year of searching, some of gabe's remains were found near plymouth and given over to the family in november of 2023. but the contra costa county district attorney says the investigation into her death remains open. earlier this year, the city of oakley dedicated this bench here in civic center park to alexis gabe's memory. her family says it's a place where they can come to remember her. but the journey isn't over for the gabe family, their grief will last forever, but they also face an uncertain legal battle. the da previously said she would consider bringing charges against alicia coleman clark, the mother of gabe suspected killer, if gabe's remains were found. >> we have come across evidence of aiding and abetting while

reviewing the footage with antioch pd, and we are hoping that everything will be revealed in the documentary. >> gabe says he hopes the documentary will bring more clues out of the woodwork and bring about justice for his daughter. he says his family has struggled to see coleman clark face no consequences as their family navigates their grief, they have faced some back and forth with discovery plus, the network airing the documentary, which considered holding the episode until next season. community members reached out in droves demanding to see the episode sooner, and the network changed course. >> our attorney believes that the airing of the documentary could assist our case, and which is why it is crucial for the network to broadcast it. >> for now, the family has been told the episode, titled where is alexis gabe, will air on april 24th. >> we just want everyone to see what we saw and, you know, let

us know, you know, if we're wrong or not. >> in oakley, tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> the last survivor of the uss arizona died today at his home in northern california at the age of 102. luke hunter was just 19 years old on his post as a quartermaster on the battleship when the japanese attacked pearl harbor. more than 80 years ago, the arizona lost nearly 1200 sailors and marines. on december 7th, 1941, accounting for nearly half of the dead from the battle last year. the veteran still had vivid memories of that day as the arizona sank, contour and other survivors worked to help the wounded and recover bodies. >> we knew what was happening. five seconds. we didn't have time to look up and see what was coming. they were all right down at the water's edge, coming in, took a 15 1,600 pound bomb.

alongside of them were two turrets and they were bad. real bad. one spotted and picked up by the their bodies and the skin had come off your head. >> he later went to flight school and flew 200 missions. he survived being shot down in new guinea. in 1943, connor died at his home in grass valley today surrounded by his family. the family of a san jose teacher who died in a car accident last year , is kicking off an auction tomorrow to raise money for a scholarship in her name. >> virginia wright, also known as spg gina, used sneakers as a way to connect with her students and now her more than 200 pairs of shoes that she collected over the years will be up for auction. the auction goes live tomorrow on charitybuzz.com. all of the proceeds will go to a san jose state university scholarship fund in honor of sp gina. >> an absolutely stunning day here in the bay area to kick off the first day of april. good

evening everybody. live weather camera looking out towards the golden gate bridge. visibility is unlimited. wow, isn't that just glorious? take a look at the current air temperatures. after realizing highs today from 62 degrees along the seashore to 77 degrees in santa rosa and in novato, it's currently in the 70s. it is now 73 degrees in concord, clayton, walnut creek, all the way back in through alamo, into danville. how about mid 60s in hayward, through castro valley and a pair of sixes now and palo alto through east palo alto into foster city. how about redwood city and redwood shores, all in the mid and high 60s. the winds are a bit on the breezy side. we will sustain these winds 10 to 20mph throughout the next couple of hours. then they'll back off to about ten miles per hour. sfo and throughout that san bruno gap, up to 16 and a 14 mile per hour wind in mountain view. here we go. clear skies right now, according to our storm tracker.

the husband and wife were passionate tech entrepreneurs and investors. they worked for a palo alto tech investment firm that invests in israeli startups. >> the last survivor of the uss arizona died today at his home in grass valley. lou conter was 102 years old. he was at his post on the battleship when the japanese attacked pearl harbor on december 7th, 1941. he later went on to earn his wings flying 200 patrol bomber missions, and retired after 28 years in the navy. you're watching ktvu fox two news at 630. california's new minimum wage for fast food workers took effect today, and that means half of million employees will make at least $20 an hour. ktvu is amanda quintana shows us who is getting the raise and what it could mean for businesses. >> probably it should have happened a while ago, but it's good. it's happening now. >> customers getting breakfast at mcdonald's monday morning say they're happy. the people making their mcmuffins are getting more money. >> they're trying to pay rent and support people. and i think it's important that they get

paid for their work fairly and we need them, you know, and someone's got to be here. >> you know, we count on these guys to make us food and they do a great job. so it's nice to see them getting rewarded for it. >> the new $20 an hour minimum wage will give california's fast food workers one of the highest minimum wages in the country. labor unions and the fast food industry had been fighting over wages for years before lawmakers passed this law last year. now, the two disagree on the impact this wage increase will cause. >> we're no longer hiring. we're not backfilling position. we're not growing in the state anymore. we're not expanding more location. and i'm ultimately thinking about selling or closing my business. >> some major chains like mcdonald's, chipotle, starbucks, jack in the box and shake shack have already said they will have to raise menu prices. but researchers say fast food restaurants have been raising their prices for the last ten years, and they have enough of a buffer to afford this. >> it's really when we look at these profit margins that are at record levels, that profits are

at record levels in the fast food industry, that we find this very clear evidence that these fast food industry, that the fast food industry in california can largely absorb these operating costs of associated with the minimum wage increase without having to hike prices up any more than they've actually have over the past decade. >> and customers are seeing that, too. >> the amount of money that they already charge, they make a significant profit. so it's just something they hold over people's heads to try and keep the wage low. >> i don't think mcdonald's is going to run out of money because they're paying these people a little more. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> the city of oakland reportedly plans to offer a five year lease extension to the a's at the coliseum. espn reports that the deal would give the a's a temporary home until its new stadium in las vegas is built. as part of that new deal, the a's would pay more than $19 million a year over five years, for a total of $97 million. reports show that right now they

pay just 1.25 million a year. the a's current lease at the coliseum expires at the end of this season. the two sides plan to meet tomorrow. about that proposed contract that includes an opt out after three years. and today, oakland mayor shengtao released a statement. she says she is, quote, committed to doing everything in my power to keep the a's in oakland. the terms we have proposed for a lease extension at the coliseum are clear, reasonable and achievable. having major league baseball in oakland is what is best for the owners. the league, the players, and most importantly, the fans. personal information from 73 million current and former at&t customers leaked onto the dark web. >> at&t says the information included some social security numbers and passcodes. ktvu tom vacar has more on the massive breach. >> in its latest data breach, at&t said it found the 73 million current and former at&t customers information on the so-called dark web, where

hackers often post and sell sensitive information on the 2019 customer information, contains many social security numbers, as well as four digit passcode ids. affected folks are or will be notified by at&t by email or letters that their four digit passcode codes have already been changed, and that it will pay for credit monitoring services as warranted . cybersecurity firm deep watch helps companies monitor, detect, stop or mitigate, as well as survive cyber attacks. >> they need an advocate who can help the companies secure the data better. they also need an advocate who can make it harder on those malicious actors. >> but many companies thirsting for additional profits use and sell customer data that creates mother loads of data that the bad guys can turn into money, either by selling it or using it to rob the victims directly. >> one of the first rules of

just to afford the median priced home. it's not just here in california where that is true. it's true in 22 states across the country, as fox's gerri willis shows us, that number has

more than tripled from just four years ago. >> it's harder than ever for prospective homeowners to buy a house. a new bank rate study shows that the required salary to purchase the average home is now over 110,000. that's up 46% in just four years. home buyers only needed to make $76,000 back in 2020, and the issue is widespread. you now need a six figure salary to buy the average home in 23 states, including the district of columbia. four years ago, that number was six. mortgage rates have played a small role in the bump, but home prices have, by and large, kept pace with the needed salary to buy them. the average home nationwide is up 42, sitting at 412,000. so where do you need to make the most to buy the average home? california tops the list. you need almost $200,000 to buy the average home. there followed by hawaii, washington, d.c, massachusetts and washington
