you have a plan for rebrand, hoping to raise its profile and attract more visitors, officials at the oakland airport pitch a name change. >> we're still the oakland international airport. we just happen to be wanting to add a geography that allows people to identify where we are. >> the plan includes adding san francisco bay to the airport's name. good evening, i'm greg lee. >> and i'm crystal bailey. planners say it will put the airport on the map with more travelers, but it's getting some mixed reviews. new at ten ktvu is amber lee is live at oakland international, which may soon have a longer name. amber >> that's right. crystal. if it's approved, it will definitely be longer. now, most

people will still call it oakland. airport officials hope that the name change will lead to more people flying in and out of this airport at a large welcome sign greets travelers at oakland international airport. >> i guess i just like how easy it is compared to other airports i've been to. >> many praised this airport for convenience, but a name change is being proposed. instead of metropolitan oakland international airport. it's current official name, the port commission, which oversees airport operations, is considering a new name. san francisco bay oakland international airport. the airport code okay will remain the same. >> it is a perfect way to identify geographically where oakland, the city of oakland, is, port commission president barbara leslie says a study found that 50% of international travelers and 30% of domestic travelers, primarily from the east coast, do not know that oakland is in the bay area. >> still, some travelers oppose

the name change. i think changing the name and putting san francisco in front is kind of a diss to oakland, and then also going to create more confusion. >> marin. >> but the airport's interim aviation director says the name change will raise oakland's profile. he says currently, the lack of knowledge about oakland is causing airlines not to add service and routes at this airport, adding more destinations to our portfolio. >> really, given the airlines an opportunity to fill those aircraft, both from outbound as well as inbound. >> mayor sheng tao supports the name change proposal. she says, quote, this adjustment isn't just about signage. it's about inviting travelers to discover all that oakland and the region have to offer. >> or maybe they just want to distance themselves from the negative connotation with the city. >> this man suspects that crime and violence in oakland may be the reason for the name change. >> i can understand to a level on a business level, but i don't

agree. >> if you're trying to get people abroad that aren't familiar with the bay area and all the regional cities to come here, then including san francisco and the name is probably a good idea for us. >> it's about growing and growing opportunity for our employees. for travelers, it's leaning in to this beautiful city that we all love. >> the port commission will be listening to public comment about the name change, discussing it and voting on it. at its meeting on april 11th, the commission president is optimistic that it will be approved. crystal. >> it sounds like people will still, of course, know it as oakland airport. thank you so much, amber and a very stormy start to a holiday weekend. pretty much the whole bay area from north bay to the south bay and all spots in between saw rain and wind throughout. today. this is what it looked like in the south bay. plenty of people out with umbrellas in san jose and in the sierra. you can expect some challenges while

driving through the mountains this weekend. this is a live look at interstate. interstate 80 at soda springs. chain controls are in effect for parts of 80 and 50 tonight. >> all right. let's get to meteorologist mark tamayo now. mark. rain, wind, snow. so will this rain continue into the weekend? >> it will continue at least into the first half of the weekend. yeah. so today was kind of a phase one of the storm with that cold front moving across the bay area. and then the second part that will be tomorrow, basically tonight into tomorrow. take a look at the rainfall totals over the past 24 hours. felt and getting up there close to two inches of rain so far. san rafael over an inch. santa rosa 0.93. so these are pretty you know, it's not the most extreme storm, but still some impactful rain amounts throughout the day today. and san jose 2.38 as we take a look at the overall storm headlines for today and tomorrow, the overall expectation for rainfall , about a half an inch to over two inches and a wind advisory is still up until 5:00 tomorrow morning. here's our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. still some slick roadways to show you here, so still some rain showers to track

for tonight. and here is the radar coverage. as you can see, the radar loop over the past few hours. and here's some of the coverage up in parts of the north bay. we'll move things around to the central portions of the bay, so still some pretty good downpours out there. coming really close to oakland and right around the berkeley area and then moving the maps, shifting the maps around to portions of the south bay as well, closer to a san jose and some more development here right around the half moon bay area as well. as we expand the view, we can see the circulation offshore, and that is the area of low pressure that will keep some thunderstorm chances in our forecast for tonight and tomorrow. we'll have more on that coming up in just a little bit. >> thank you mark and if you want to stay in the know when it comes to the weather this easter weekend, download our free ktvu weather app. >> new at ten san francisco mayor london breed is planning to visit china next month in an effort to maximize economic and business opportunities. >> the mayor's office says breed will begin her trip in hong kong on april 14th. the mayor is expected to be in china for a week. the trip is sponsored by a special committee that

fundraises for trips like this, so no taxpayer money is being used. in a statement, mayor breed said in part, quote, i am honored to be invited to travel to china and meet with leaders and business, innovation and government to cultivate economic opportunities and strengthen ties between san francisco and cities across the region. >> a new warning tonight from bay area health officials about an uptick in the number of cases of measles nationwide. the alert comes as millions of americans plan to take to the skies this spring. ktvu zac sos joins us now in studio after speaking with health experts. zach, what are they telling you? >> well, they certainly don't want people to panic, but the number of cases they are concerning to them, 64 cases in the us. so far this year, according to the cdc. so the message from health officials, make sure you're up to date on your measles vaccinations, particularly if you plan to travel internationally this spring. >> we didn't put out the statement to ring an alarm bell or to scare people about measles, but bay area health officials say they do want the public to be aware there is an

increase in cases and there are really good ways to prevent, getting sick with measles. >> san mateo county health officer doctor kismet baldwin santana joining other bay area health officials in putting out the joint warning. it comes after the release of new numbers by the cdc, confirming 64 cases of measles in the u.s. so far this year, 64 in this year is already more cases than we had in all of 2023, so it's definitely something to worry about. >> to think about and to be aware that we are getting more measles than we used to. >> the vast majority of those cases occurring in illinois and florida, we have not had an outbreak in the bay area, but with spring break travel picking up at the bay area's three major airports, we're really encouraging people to ensure that they were properly vaccinated, to go back and check that vaccine record and to really make sure that they are up to date. >> that's really what we want

people to keep in mind during this spring break season, particularly during international travel. >> health experts making it clear the measles vaccine is safe. >> i would absolutely urge parents to get this for their children. we've had the measles vaccine since the early 60s. this is a safe vaccine. >> symptoms of the measles include a cough, fever and runny nose. >> unusual sorts of nonspecific symptoms followed by the onset of a rash. >> without the vaccine, doctors say contracting measles can be dangerous and potentially even life threatening. >> it can be a cause of hospitalization, serious illness and even death in certain populations, particularly very young children, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. >> and right now, the cdc is recommending the measles vaccine for children ten sorry, rather, 12 to 15 months of age. infants 6 to 12 months of age can be vaccinated early if they're traveling internationally. teens and adults who've never gotten

the vaccine, they can get it right away. >> greg, good advice during this busy travel season. zac sos in studio. zach. thank you. state attorney general rob bonta has filed an amicus brief in the u.s. supreme court to protect access to emergency abortion care. bonta was joined by 24 other attorneys general. the group filed the brief in support of the biden administration's challenge to idaho's near-total ban on abortion. an amicus brief is a document that aims to influence the court's decision. the coalition argues that the ban not only endangers women, but would also have serious repercussions on the health systems of other states. in a statement, bonta said, quote, at the california department of justice, we vehemently oppose idaho's near-total abortion ban law as it strips away an individual's right to make their own health care decisions, including the right to receive abortion care when facing a medical emergency that threatens severe harm to the patient's health, whether in an outpatient setting or in an emergency room. abortion care is health care, and with two weeks to certify

area one high school is in its second year of a project that offers free dresses for the big event. ktvu alice wirtz has the story tonight live from corte madera. alice >> that's right. greg. this started last year, but this year they went big. the free prom dress is now offered in a shopping mall here in corte madera. it was designed to be an

environmentally friendly way to approach prom. it also is a nice way to equalize everyone being fashionable and fun at the biggest event of the year at the village in corte madera, a destination boutique is sparking joy for students planning their biggest fashionable and fun night in high school prom. >> we have so many different types of dresses and styles, and then we also have some more shiny ones if that is your style. >> several racks of beautiful, many new dresses, all of them donated and offered for free for those attending prom. >> the amount of options, there's so many and it's really cool that they're all for free because prom dresses are very expensive. >> charlotte lacey and her colleague olivia villanova are going big with their leadership club project this year at redwood high school in larkspur. >> these dresses, they're brand new with tags, and there's something really special about being able to walk away with a shopping bag with a dress that is brand new and hasn't been worn before. >> shoppers are grateful with so many options, parents are thrilled as well. >> blown away i didn't believe

her when she told me. >> she comes in and she's like, are you sure it's all free? i'm like, yes mom, it's free. she's like, free. are you sure it's a gift that builds self-confidence without a price tag? >> our whole project here is to break down that stigma so this is for everybody, no matter if you can afford it or not. everybody should be able to access prom, no matter where you might come from. >> it's mostly dresses, but there are some items for gentlemen. that one's my favorite. it's been a humbling experience for charlotte and her leadership team. >> this has been an eye opening experience for me because we live in marin and we're often known as being a very wealthy community, but in reality, not everybody has the same privileges and can afford a prom dress. so this has been like a really cool experience for. >> and greg, this has been going on for a couple of weekends now. tomorrow, saturday will be the last offering for free prom dresses. this will be open from 11 to 5. they are accepting donations for next year as they expect to give out even more dresses. you can drop them off

her kids. oakland police towed it because the registration was expired. she and two of her kids, aged 17 and nine, were living in the car. oakland pastor of west side missionary baptist church, reverend ken chambers, stepped in to help last week, and oakland police released the car to burnett without charging her. but when she picked it up, it had too much damage to repair. after days of working on the car, reverend chambers says he decided to get burnett a whole new vehicle, a used jeep, which she says she is set to receive tomorrow morning. the jeep is a donation to the church, which the church is donating to her. our special program, voices for change, returns with a new episode. >> this sunday morning. we'll continue our celebration of women's history month with conversations focused on uplifting girls and women. we'll hear from the president of golden state's new wnba team about why her goals for this franchise go far beyond the court, and a mother daughter duo who is clearing the path for other women in construction. their message of empowerment it as a female that wants to

venture, talk to people you know because guess what? >> a woman wants to help you grow within that space. so don't be quiet. speak up. we definitely want to encourage. mentoring is key. >> voices for change is back this sunday morning at 930 right here on ktvu. >> well, in barry weather, still talking about some clouds tonight and still some rain showers out there. and this unsettled pattern really continues into saturday as well. take a look at the overall weather headline for tomorrow. some saturday showers with the possibility of some thunderstorms and out toward the sierra as we move the maps to the east. we are talking about a winter storm warning, snow levels coming down around 4000 4500ft, and snowfall could be on the order of 10 to 24in in the sierra for us right now, as you can see, our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. still some slick roadways out there, some recent shower activity showing up, and you can see the main system we're watching right now. there's this circulation out here in the pacific right about here. we'll come in closer on

the bay area radar. there's still some green to track out there. and this is the radar loop just over the past hour or so. and overnight tonight into what your saturday morning? there is the chance we could have a few isolated thunderstorms paying us a visit that could include some lightning strikes, maybe some hail as well. here's a look at the radar coverage right now. up in parts. parts of the north bay. looks like some development right around half moon bay, so definitely some more coverage here out toward the coast. and then watching this cell right around oakland. so portions of the east bay approaching the san leandro area and then shifting them off to the south bay. we still have some scattered rain to talk about in the san jose area as well. now winds are still a bit of a breeze out there. the wind advisory continues until 5:00 tomorrow morning. you can see on these panels winds around 12 to around 15. half moon bay, gusting to over 20 miles an hour. current numbers in the upper 40s in santa rosa. so somewhat of a cooler pattern out there. concord checking in 48. and the forecast model shows you this. it's an unsettled saturday. some clouds, some breaks in the clouds, some showers that could quickly develop, and once again, maybe a few isolated thunderstorms throughout the day

on your saturday. so be prepared for everything tomorrow. the pattern will be changing though. as we head toward easter. we'll have more on that with your full update in a little bit. >> all right mark, thanks. we'll see you in a bit. in a little more than a week, parts of the country will get quite the show, a full solar eclipse. >> and while we might not be able to see the total eclipse here, it could affect us in different ways, including travel. the faa says the total solar eclipse on april 8th will result in some delays for travelers potentially have some bigger impacts on the airports and states in the path of the eclipse, including texas, oklahoma, arkansas, missouri, illinois, indiana, ohio, pennsylvania, vermont, and maine. the agency says pilots and airlines should be prepared to possibly hold more often, circle more before landing, reroute and take off later than planned. one airline fully embracing the eclipse delta, is offering a flight from austin to detroit specifically for, quote, umbra philes, who want to spend as much time as possible directly within the path of

it will be shot. throw another one. i will shoot you. >> do not throw it right. >> do not throw it. >> san pablo police released body camera footage today of a police shooting last september. andre smith's wife had called for a mental health evaluation. the video show officers using tasers and beanbag rounds after smith throws chunks of brick at them. an officer shot and wounded him in the leg when he moved toward them with a metal pole. smith recovered, and the contra costa county district

attorney has charged him with assaulting officers. >> and we're getting a better idea on exactly what happened in a police shooting in sunnyvale over the weekend, where a 19 year old was killed. >> today, police released video from the confrontation and information about what led up to the shooting. and as ktvu tori gaines reports, the young man's family is struggling to process exactly what happened. >> the reports came in saturday night of a man with a knife naked, running through a mobile home park, and ended with a deadly shooting, police later learning the man had called 911 on himself. the sunnyvale department of public safety says officers were called to the plaza del rey mobile home park saturday on the report of a man with a knife. i want to clarify, too. >> it wasn't until late into the phone that the dispatcher was able to put the information together that the subject indeed was the reporting party. >> when the dispatcher recognizes that the man with the knife was also the caller, she instructs him to put the knife down. >> and you drop the knife, please, can you hear me? i'd

like you to put the knife down. >> the man on the phone was later identified as 19 year old emmanuel perez. his family says perez struggled with his mental health, especially after the pandemic, and police already knew him. police confirming to ktvu that they had been to perez's home on two other occasions. the family says one of those was to take perez to the hospital for a mental health crisis. the edited body and dash cam video of the shooting was released friday. we want to warn you some viewers may find this video disturbing. drop the knife . >> i'm not going to give you any more stuff. stop i'm telling you, stop right now. i'm going to shoot you if you don't stop. stop right there. >> we are only showing less than 30s of the body cam footage that lasted several minutes. officer kevin lemos, who has been with the police force for three and a

half years, was the one who fired the fatal shots. sunnyvale dps chief no confirmed that officers are armed with several non-lethal measures, including a baton, a taser and pepper spray, but he could not comment on why officer lemos did not use those measures. perez's family tells me they are not medical or law enforcement experts, and they are awaiting the results of the police investigation. for now, they grieve the loss of their loved one, telling ktvu, quote, we remember him as a gentle and family oriented young man, while he was already working with peers and health care providers to manage his mental health, he was never one to shy away from asking for help. the family tells us that perez was still healing from pandemic impacts, and they are saddened that his ability to try to return to normalcy is now gone. in sunnyvale, tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> a man was found dead after his boat crashed into rocks near point reyes, the sonoma county sheriff's office sent a helicopter to the boat

estuary. opd says a maritime business was broken into on march 13th. the marine unit recognized suspects from a video as people living on boats in the estuary. yesterday officers served search warrants and arrested three people. they say they also recovered stolen property from the business. >> hundreds of new cameras are set to be installed with the hope of making oakland and the east bay safer. >> governor newsom announced today the cameras will be placed on both city streets and state highways. as our crime reporter henry lee shows us, many police departments already have this system, but this will be on a larger regional scale. >> governor gavin newsom says hundreds of cameras that read license plates will soon be in place in oakland and across the east bay, which will aid and support the efforts of law enforcement to focus on stolen

vehicles. >> the governor made his announcement in a video recorded along hegenberger road in east oakland, a hot spot for burglaries. >> the camera system is from flock safety and one that's already used by many law enforcement agencies. the cameras take still photos of the backs of cars and not people or faces. from there, police can track down specific cars and potentially arrest suspects. >> this is proven technology, where privacy is foundational and a core component of the effort. >> this is building on efforts we made just a few weeks ago with a surge of california highway patrol 290 cameras will be on oakland city streets under the purview of oakland police, while 190 cameras will be set up on state highways in the east bay and monitored by the chp. >> images will be stored for 28 days, with many officers barred from chasing suspects in property crimes. supporters say these cameras will allow the cops to catch up to them later. >> we also feel that big brother isn't watching enough that that, you know, my big brothers, they always looked out for me and i think that the ultimate big

brother is our local police department. >> if it could help address some of the immediate, you know, public safety issues around stolen vehicles and that kind of thing, i think, you know, hopefully it'll have it'll have an impact. >> others aren't so sure. >> the biggest unknown question is whose rules are we playing? >> by brian hofer is chair of the city of oakland's privacy commission. he questions whether the chp's privacy standards will be the same as oakland's. >> i know my opinion is in the minority, that people are acting based on fear, and also an unproven, misguided belief that these cameras are going to solve all our problems. >> they won't. james burch of the anti police terror project says money could be better spent elsewhere instead of these cameras. >> could we have, you know, professionals doing their work in the community to prevent violence. you know, those are the costs that we're seeing here on the streets in the city of oakland. >> it's not clear where these cameras might be set up, but we've learned that the system could be installed beginning in the next 30 days and be fully complete by this fall in

oakland. henry lee, ktvu, fox studios in union city, a freeway shooting is caught on video on interstate 80. >> a suspect was arrested. the victim told troopers he was driving on 880 northbound near alvarado-niles road when someone in a green toyota sedan shot out his window after a road rage incident yesterday afternoon. police say the victim is okay but was injured by broken glass. the suspect was found within 24 hours during the search of his home. police say they found two guns and a large amount of ammunition. >> we are getting a close up look at the damage and wreckage from tuesday's bridge collapse in baltimore. an ap photographer was brought out on a boat to shoot the footage showing the bridge lying in the water and on top of the ship, called the dolly. it shows just what cleanup crews are facing. seven floating cranes are among the heavy equipment being brought in to help clean up the wreckage of the key bridge tonight, ships are still unable to reach the port of baltimore. reporter josh rosenthal has more on where the

recovery efforts now stand. >> for days in, the wreckage remains on the patapsco river to go out there and to see it up close, you realize just how daunting a task this is now. heavy equipment being brought in to help. that includes what's called the chesapeake 1000, which officials said is one of the largest cranes on the east coast. friday, maryland governor westmore explained the crane can lift about 1000 tons. problem is, the key bridge weighs between 3 and 4000 tons. >> so our team needs to cut that trust into sections in a safe and a responsible and in an efficient way before it can lift those pieces out of the water. >> among those working to clear the channel, the same army corps of engineers team sent to free the ever forward container ship, which ran aground in the chesapeake bay in 2022. >> that industry muscle memory, that incredible wealth of knowledge, expertise, skills, experience, all those lessons

to the city of san francisco over conditions in the tenderloin district. >> as ktvu christien kafton shows us, those residents say they want the city to take decisive action to put an end to open air drug markets and homeless encampments. >> conditions in san francisco's tenderloin are the ongoing center of debate, and now the center of a lawsuit filed last week. residents and hotels in the area say the city hasn't done enough to improve street conditions and filed a suit in federal court, saying while they pay their taxes, they don't get the same services that other city residents receive. several of the residents chose to remain anonymous, but are speaking out now for the first time about what it's like living in the tenderloin. >> it is dangerous to come outside. i work three days a week. i have to walk two blocks up where there's drug drugs going around in drug dealers. >> this resident is raising two children in the tenderloin and
