hospital with aúmajor head injury after authorities say a e opens fire at a sonoma county sheriff's car. >> deputies confront the suspect. we see hands. the suspect responds with more gunfire, even as other deputies converge on just after midnight on march fourth. >> got one subject in the car moving around a lot. shots fired. >> deputy then returns fire. and what would be the first of several a harrowing confrontatin ? it all began when the suspect brandished the rifle at a nightclub atúthe corner of stony point and todd road, where he had been kicked out aúday earlier. he then took off in a white car as deputies arrived, he led deputies on a chase to a parking lot on todd road near standish avenue, where the first gun battle happened. these kinds of incidents are rare in sonoma county,c where a suspect is aggressivec coming after law enforcement. the chaseúcame to an end when the suspect crashed his car into what turned out to be an empty sheriff's cruiser on stony point, near butler avenue.

deputy nicholas deleo was outside of his car trying to set up spike strips that deputy opened fire. but deputy d'elia was then accidentally hit fellos blount's car and suffered a major head injury. santa rosa police lieutenant christopher mahurin says what led up to that crash is under investigation. >> we are looking into wasúhe believing that maybe that was the suspect who was firing at dark on stony point road, especially in that part of town. >> the incident left a number of deputies injured andúseveral patrol cars damaged, shot up and mangled. >> the deputy suffered a severe head injury. is still in the hospital. a second deputy was wounded on his leg andútwo other deputies sufferedúhand injuries& >> all told, police say the suspect, 53 year old jose luis villasenor cervantes,úfired more than 50 times with his rifle. he was shot and wounded by deputies, but ultimately died as a result of crashing into the c. >> thec fact that this man shot more than 50 rounds from an assault style rifle and our

almost a year ago. during a hearing today, the defense argued that intense media coverage had in san francisco ad a change of venue. the judge disagreed. so his trial will stay in the city. the judge today date of may 20th.úand now to a new development in a decades old murder case in santa clara county. >> lori houts was found dead in 1992, in mountain view. the man who was accused of killing her was put on trial twice, and both times the trials ended in hung juries. but now a state appellate court has ruled john . ktvu jesse gary hasúthe story. it wrong. and now the ball's >> more than 30 years after her murder, lori houts family may finally find closureúinside a murderer john woodward would not violate constitutional protections against being tried
