. janna and julie and mike. what a battle it is. this is such a tight race. it's the top two candidates with the most votes who advanced to the general. >> well, since place spot has bn bouncing back and forth between assembly memberúevanúlowe and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. today lowe actually pulled ahead for the first time by a very tiny margin as a result of an influx of mail in ballots. yesterday was the deadline for those ballots to be received by election offices. now, here are the latest results from the santa clara county elections office. they show sam liccardo, former san jose mayor, inúthe lead tonight.úhe's projected to advance to the november ballot by taking first place in the primary with 21% of the vote. right now, lowe and simitian still neck and neck in this race for the second spot. lowe right now is ahead by just 70 votes. san jose state political science professor melinda jackson says right now, it's anybody's race.

>> but now we have these three very strong democratic candidates competing against between them on the issues. they come from different areas of the district have their own kind of bases of supporters as an issue. the outgoing congresswoman has endorsed joe simitian. i'm sure that helped him with with some evan lowe, you know, kind of catching up to him. lowe represents a younger generation. he's asian american. so you know, it could go either way. >> the 16th congressional district includes portions of santa clara, san mateo and santa cruz counties. lowe's sudden surge to second is a really tight race since this election simitian said that he was entirely confident that he would be in the top two for the general election in novembern in a statement, joe simitian said,

quote, every vote counts and every vote has to be counted. that'súthe nature of our process and that's as it should be. the encouraging, but soon. meantimee also issued a statement saying, quote, thank you again to all of the voters who have made their voices heard inúthis election by the latest results that have put our campaign in the lead. professor jackson says. if lowe finishes in the top two, he when there tend to be younger voters who might be looking for somebody who's closer to their age. but again, there are these top democrats. they're well known in the district,úand they really appeal to different parts really shows the diversity that we have there in that district. watch this race.l continue to >> jana. thank you. well, another switch in the race now for california senate after taking the lead today, republican steve garvey is back in second place tonight behind democratic congressman adam schiff. so far about 5 million

begins tonight's west coast wrap. health officials say this is the first human case of plague since 2021, and the first death since 2020. this comes about a month after a human case of the bubonic plague was confirmed in oregon. officials there say that infection was caught and treated early. the bubonic plague is a bacterial disease involving rodents and is spread to humans through the bites of infected fleas in southern california.t& >> a major landslide overnight flattened a home and damaged at least three others. the sherman oaks home was under construction, and no one was inside when the hillside gave way early this morning. now, were forced to evacuate.the area downtown los angeles received more than 12in of rain over the there. no one was hurt in thet- slide. >> and in washington, the department of health is launching a pollen surveillance system with 11 monitors across the state. the data will be
