children and some friends as well. it is not yet known where she will celebrate her birthday. and madonna is ready to resume the celebrations here. the pop star has rescheduled dates for her celebration tour she set to perform at shea center on february 27th and 28th. the original shows were scheduled for october, but she was hospital in the icu for serious bacterial infections. tickets for the october show will be valid for the new february dates . tragedy strikes in san francisco. an suv plowed into a mother, a father and a child in a stroller. one of them does not survive. what traffic control officers say is a major issue in this very area. and another step toward closure for survivors of a former san jose state athletic trainer who pleaded guilty to charges stemming from sexual assault allegations. details of what was said in court. plus its back to school season and students in san francisco are making their way back to classes today while students are

in my house. yeah just, you know, like it's something new to new grade, right? yeah. yeah you know, are my friends going to be there also once, like, once your daughter is hit middle school, it's a whole new campus. will i even know how to find the science building? so i think as much prep work and i know you and your wife are so good about that, talking about feeling things and getting together with their friends and having a few discussions. i love that. i can't. why i want to see those first day pictures when they come. students, by the way, across the bay in san francisco here are dealing with more than just first day jitters. unfortunately this morning, the district like so many others nationwide, is grappling with the teacher shortage. ctv's bailey o'carroll live in the city here with how the community really is coming together on this first day to kick off a whole new school year. bailey garcia, good morning. it's students have gone inside their classrooms at this point this morning. it's just past 9 a.m. so we did watch them get here. they were very excited. one little girl picking out her outfit. her parents told us she wanted to have a crazy outfit, but they were excited to get

back into the classroom here today. but of course, we cannot mention the first day of school without mentioning what many parents and people all across the bay area are talking about in regards to schools starting up this fall, which is the teacher shortage and how that's affecting students, parents, but also where we stand here in san francisco. just with how big that shortage is. i do want to bring in cassandra teachers unin here in san francisco. cassandra how many teachers are we missing in san francisco right now? at last check, there was 174 job openings. still vacant, still hired for. that's just for certificated. the teachers and classrooms. we also have an additional 170 or more of para educators. those are classroom aides who work directly with students. what needs to be done to fill those vacancies, in your opinion? there's multiple things that need to be happening, but the very first one is a raise, right? we're in a contract negotiation. we tried to force a

deal to come together in may before the school year would have ended. that would help people decide to stay. and those that were looking to enter into the career or enter the district could be incentivized to come in. and then another one is really around whether or not this career is optional for folks that. apologize for losing bailey carroll's report here as she is in san francisco, students are heading back to class for the first day. they're across the bay in the east bay. the story is the same as fremont unified school district is marking its first day. back in class, we took some video this morning for you. admission san jose elementary school saw parents dropping off their children for their first day of school. we talked with one dad who was dropping off his children there in fourth grade and kindergarten. i'm excited to the summer is finally back to school. we've got the older one through. so the younger ones starting. so we kind of know what's going on. so helpful to have an older sibling, right? the children said they're excited to see their friends again and that is what school is

all about at that age. are moving on to this story right now. a four year old girl has died. her father seriously hurt in mission bay after they were hit by a car at a busy intersection. the crash happened shortly after five last night at fourth and king streets near the caltrain station and about a block from oracle park two. there are two right turn lanes at that intersection. well, a silver suv in the second turn. lane was there when it struck that family. the vehicle and the driver that was involved in this incident remained on scene. the driver is cooperating with our investigation. the any impairment due to drugs or alcohol does not to be does not appear to be a factor. well, the area was especially busy because of the time of day and because there was a giants game at oracle last night. there were also several traffic control officers in the area and they were able to evaluate the family first. now, the mother was not seriously hurt physically, but the little girl and her father were taken to a hospital with life threatening injuries due to the injuries. the four year old

female succumbed to her injuries and was declared deceased at the hospital. traffic control officers who work at that intersection say drivers are usually interested in getting out of town. so they're usually watching the traffic light, not looking at the crosswalks. officials are not releasing information about the driver, including whether any charges will be filed. former san jose state head, athletic trainer and sports medicine director scott shaw has pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of athletes. shaw admitted to violating the civil rights of four students by touching them without their consent during physical therapy. appointments from 2017 to 2020. athletes who were victims of sexual misconduct say they feel vindicated after others called them liars for years. the plea deal comes less than two weeks after a mistrial was declared in the case. shaw faces two years in prison. at a sentencing hearing in november. residents in san francisco continue to be skeptical of self-driving cars after one got stuck in wet concrete. crews has recovered the vehicle and a company spokesperson spokesperson

confirmed that workers remove the vehicle from the wet concrete on city streets yesterday afternoon. sfgate reports that people who live in the area saw the car stuck at a construction site on golden gate avenue between fillmore and steiner streets. the car had no passengers inside. let's get out the door here. a lot of sunshine greeting us this morning. it's a nice thing to see. steve paulson. it is. i think after today, we'll start seeing more clouds rolling in low and high clouds. we're caught in between the low to the west, which was off southern california yesterday. it's lifted northward. it's not going anywhere. in fact, if anything, i think it's going to move in a little closer starting tomorrow as temps will begin to cool and drag in a lot of cloud cover on on friday, maybe some scattered showers. still moisture streaming northward from southern california. southern arizona and nevada going right along the spine of the sierra into tahoe, truckee, northeast california. shasta las and also up towards northeast northwest california as well. we have some low clouds. most of it's about gone, but there's a little bit more today than we saw yesterday. and i think it's a

sign of things to come. today, though, you can see caught there in between. so everything looks good today, sunny. it could be a few high clouds, but i think overall, today's sunny, that's a pretty good activity. yesterday it favored more south shore and also towards interstate 80. more so than 50 north. but it could easily change today. so if you're going up there, keep that in mind. upper 90s to near 100 for a few inland today. after today, though, i think we'll start to ease up on on some of these warmer temps coast and bay should drop a couple of degrees today just by the mere fact that we had a little bit more of a breeze, a little bit more fog today. but so today's nice today tomorrow should be pretty good by friday though i think we'll cloud it up. a weekend will be kind of coming of some fog and sunny and cooler temps. what is now tropical storm hillary. this will be where all the focus, all the attention and all the projections between now and monday are going to be here as it moves up the coast up of baja and moves in somewhere around san diego. most projections taken in the southern california, the high desert, then in between tahoe and las vegas, somewhere around there,

it could easily come over us as well. but these projections are all changing rapidly depending on what forecast projections you look at. if we do, if we do get the moisture, we could have some serious august rain for us or in tahoe. i mean, that would be a lot of rain for us in august. as you know, i've seen some areas in tahoe with over two and one half inches forecast. so it's just a matter of sorting out the details. it's just too far away to be to give a forecast. it's more of just an outlook or a hey, look at this is really what it is. sunny today, breezy, warm to hot inland. one more day. temps cool down upper 90s for a few 60s 70s closer to the coast. and tomorrow we'll cool it off. clouded up on friday. your weekend looks good. monday, tuesday could be dealing with a lot of tropical clouds. thank you, steve. coming up here on mornings on to the nine, the president and first lady say they will travel to maui following devastating wildfires there. who the president will meet with and what else he's expected to do. we'll also update the search of burned areas and why the process of identifying victims should move faster than what we've seen in

now passing 100 people. a mobile morgue arriving on scene as officials begin the process of identifying the dead. they're asking people on the island to give dna swabs to help locate loved ones. emergency responders from across the country have deployed to help with the rescue efforts. if they need more, we'll send more. so they need if they ask us for more people, more equipment, whatever it is that they need. since these fires began, more than 2200 structures have either been damaged or destroyed. state officials say hundreds of hotel rooms and vacation rentals are becoming available for those in week after the fires broke out, folks here say they're frustrated with the speed of the government's response. the frustration lies with our government, not we've always had to fight what we had before over here. you know, i don't know why, because we make so much money as the island tries to make sense of the devastation developers have been reportedly contacting fire victims, asking to buy their damaged properties. hawaii governor josh green says he's considering a moratorium on

land sales. i will not be allowing anyone to build or rezone or do anything of that sort if they've taken advantage of anyone here. rebuilding will be for our local people. president biden will travel to maui on monday to meet with first responders and survivors on the island of maui. max gordon, ktvu fox two news. new this morning, the white house says president biden will travel to maui on monday to meet with first responders. survivors as well as federal, state and local officials. yesterday the president said that he didn't want to disrupt ongoing recovery efforts. my wife jill and i are going to travel to hawaii as soon as we can. that's what i've been talking to the governor about. i don't want to get in the way. i've been to too many disaster areas, but i want to go make sure we got everything they need, want to be sure we don't disrupt the ongoing recover efforts. white house says the president was told the search and recovery effort will be at a stage that allows for a presidential visit early next week amid an outpouring of support for those affected by the maui wildfires. consumer

experts are warning people to watch out for scammers who are exploiting the tragedy. look carefully before you click on anything and when we're on social media, please don't believe everything that you see. a lot of the images that we see on social are bait and switch, meaning that they want to reel you in with images, whether it's wildlife or someone that may or may not have been affected. the better business bureau recommends looking for registered established nonprofits and says to watch out for vague requests that don't identify the intended use of funds. pga says the wildfires on maui illustrate maui illustrate the need for public safety power shutoffs during severe fire weather. according to the bay area news group, pga says it once again prepared to cut the power as a precaution to prevent wildfires in california this fire season. while no cause has been determined yet for the maui wildfires. a lawsuit filed on saturday claims hawaiian electric, the power provider on maui, kept power lines electrified despite warnings of

high winds in the past few days. northern california has seen more than a dozen wildfires sparked by lightning. one fire up near the oregon boundary has exploded almost 4000 acres in size, according to the us forest service. the head fire in siskiyou county is the largest of at least 15 fires that started in the klamath national forest. it jumped in size in just a few hours yesterday. the fires already forced evacuations in some mountain communities west of yreka. today marks three years since lightning started the ccu lightning complex fire in the santa cruz mountains. the fire would later grow to over 86,000 acres. was one of several large lightning caused fires in the bay area that summer. some people in the mountains are still working to rebuild and recover from the fire. firefighters who work for the us forest service and other federal agencies are about to get a huge pay cut in 2021. they were given a raise averaging $20,000 a year. that's about half their salary. but the increase was temporary and expires at the end of next month. there's a

proposal in congress to make the race permanent, but it faces opposition that has some members of congress very concerned that a budget is a commitment to your values. we hope that house republicans value federal wildland firefighters, the federal firefighters union estimates 5000 firefighters will quit if the pay raise is not made permanent. that's half the federal wildland firefighters, which means state, regional and local firefighting crews would have to step in when there is a fire on federal land. walmart and exxonmobil are joining forces to offer plus members double the savings on gas for a limited time. walmart plus members can now get $0.20 off every gallon of gas purchased at participating exxon and mobil stations until september 15th. the retailer says the deal is to give customers a break at the pump after several months of fluctuating prices. walmart plus members have been receiving $0.10 off each gallon of gas since april 2022. well coming up on mornings on two, the nine tweetdeck, now known as x pro,

background checks require a waiting period for gun purchases and bans civilian purchases of assault weapons. spare me that the solution is hardening doors and not addressing the issue, which is these weapons of war, these weapons of mass destruction. and so i want to be in a world where at least we have a chance of doing that. and i want to live in a state where we can do that. if state lawmakers passed a resolution in california, they'll need 33 other states to do the same for a convention to formally discuss it. we'll note that to date, no state is successful, amended the constitution. some people who live and work in central contra costa county say they're fed up with power outages. business owners from alamo to san ramon say they've had almost 20 power outages already this year. yesterday in danville, the power went out twice, once in the early afternoon and then again in the evening. they say there was no warning. owners of service businesses say the outages, don't want to hurt our patients. so we just do

children's first day of school. i know san francisco. some other districts are heading back today. make it a great school year. let's talk about what's happening overseas here. bad behavior by tourists. a woman was caught on camera climbing across italy's historic trevi fountain to fill her water bottle. visitor is seen climbing across some rocks to reach the center of that 18th century landmark in rome. she then captures water coming from one of the spouts to fill the bottle . fountain is surrounded by signs that tell people not to touch it, not to climb it, and do not use the water as a source. a guard shows up, blows the whistle, confronts her. we don't know yet if she was fined or detained, but you have to assume everybody there has a phone. i don't know if she thought she was going to get away with it or no big deal. i've been thinking about it. i'm like like, what was your what were you thinking? i'm just going through my mind. do you just not care? right? do you just like breaking the rules? what are you going to do with the water? what do you do with the water? maybe she thought it

was special and she was going to keep it as a souvenir, which pam pointed out earlier. you can't even bring it on the plane. right, right, right. so, i mean, you know, people are so entitled. and now that everyone has a phone, we're beginning to see that. right? right. before we didn't know. but now you see there's a lot of people doing weird things is in the video. that's right. all right. let's move on to this story now. happening now, work is underway to clean up trash and even abandoned cars in the watershed next to an important reservoir. ktvu rasmus joins us live from morocco hills where east bay mud representatives say they need people to help with this problem. ali yeah, it's a big problem when it comes to people dumping illegal trash and even abandoned vehicles. we are on pinehurst road. this is in the moraga hills. you see a lot of activity next to us. this is one of three tow trucks that is out here on the side of the road. and if you follow this rappelle line about 300ft down this hillside, this embankment is an old abandoned car, is a white car, very hard to see, kind of buried between a lot of the grass and shrubbery there. but this is part of the watershed for the upper san leandro

reservoir. and that provides drinking water and the water for east bay mud customers. so when you have stuff like abandoned cars and trash and hazardous material in the watershed, you got to get that stuff out. and that's what the cleanup is about here this morning. east bay mud representatives say illegal dumping near their reservoirs has become a big problem since the pandemic last month, they did a similar cleanup around the upper san leandro reservoir and removed eight abandoned cars from the area and they ended up cleaning up more than eight tons of trash. this land and this water supply is two valuable. don't bring your trash here. this is what we drink. what we live off of. and it's a complicated process to do these types of cleanups and to remove these abandoned cars. they have to coordinate east bay mud. does with the county and other government agencies to partially close down the streets. so it's complicated and again, expensive. in the past three years, the water utility has had to spend more than $200,000 just to clean up this trash. and that

work is underway right now. if we take you back out here live again, you see, i don't know if we can see from up here, but there is a tow truck operator, contractor hired that is about 200ft down on the side of the road here. he has to hook a hook onto this abandoned car and then they have to hoist this thing up all the way up here to the road. and i was talking to some of the tow truck operators here and they said not only is this physically challenging work going downhill here and then climbing back up, but there's a lot of hazards like poison oak in this area. one of the tow truck operators told us the last time he did this back in july, he got poison oak. and so it's not fun work. he says it's not something people are chomping at the bit to do. exactly when it comes to this type of assignment. but this work is expected to last for much of the morning. they're planning on removing a three abandoned cars. this is one of them. and cleaning up at least a dozen illegal trash sites near this

reservoir. live in the mariah hills, ali rasmus, ktvu fox two news. well, one person is in the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in alameda this is happening just a short time ago on clemente avenue, not far from the alameda marina. these are live pictures from the scene of the incident. you can see the one police cruiser there on the scene right now. alameda police has the intersection closed for the investigation. as you can see right here, it's expected to open within the hour. we are told. and we're waiting on an update on the victim's condition , along with more information about the driver involved in this incident. but we'll keep you updated on air online. we'll have an update for you at noon as well. all right. now to this story. us consumers seem to be shrugging off higher prices. retail sales were up 0.7% in july. department stores showed a nearly 1% increase. restaurant sales rose 1.4% and online sales were up nearly 2. in milwaukee, president biden touted his bid nomics, saying inflation is decreasing as wages are rising, pay for low wage workers has

grown at the fastest rate in two decades. wages are growing faster than inflation, folks, that's biodynamics. it's about growing an economy by strengthening the middle class. some of the declines in sales in the report were at furniture stores, electronics and appliance stores as well. even though october is breast cancer awareness month, there is a lot of activity that's about to kick off in the coming days. we here at ktv are so proud to continue our partnership with making strides against breast cancer in the bay area and silicon valley. the fundraising season begins in just days ahead of the big walks that happen this october. we welcome to the nine olivia cattaneo, the development associate director of making strides against breast cancer. thank you for being with us. thanks for having me. excited to be here. of course, there is a powerful thing that happens when you get women and men, but mostly women at these walks together to share their stories . that excitement really is palpable. absolutely. and you know what? we're really trying to encourage more people in the

community to get involved with our making strides against breast cancer walks. we have two walks coming up in october, on october 22nd and october 28th, one in san francisco, one in silicon valley. you gave me the fundraising goals for each and they're pretty big. yes, absolutely. so in san francisco, we're hoping to raise $250,000. in silicon valley, we're hoping to raise $400,000. and this will go to fund critical breast cancer research, as well as patient programs for people who are any aware along their cancer journey. so people can mark their calendar. now saying this is what i'm doing that day. i'm going to put on my tennis shoes, put on my pink, and i'm going to walk. what can we do starting now? absolutely. well, we're kicking off our fundraising season right now, but you don't want to miss our walks in october, we'll be at crissy field on october 22nd. and california is great america. and october 28th, people could go to making strides, walk dot org slash bay area ca or slash silicon valley to sign up volunteer and fundraise. i have

been a part of these walks over the years as a participant, as an emcee and there is a powerful something that happens. you arrive essentially a stranger as you might have a little friends group, but then once you start walking and talking, you leave with this empowerment of so many people who are working for the same mission. absolutely there's nothing like gathering with your friends, your family caregivers and loved ones to support you along your cancer journey. and that's what we do with making strides against breast cancer. i know during the pandemic we talked a lot about women were putting off necessary screenings and many doctors said they are now seeing women for the first time in 2 or 3 years and they're finding cancer later. if you can say a word to women in particular who need to focus on their own health, amid everything else we do every day. absolutely i mean, screening and early detection is so critical to moving the needle when it comes to diagnosis. and, you know, in california, it's estimated that this year, 30,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. the

numbers are unacceptably high, and we have to do what we can to keep moving that needle and doing what we can to prevent and detect cancer, breast cancer used to be something that people were shocked that a loved one had. now, i hear from people who say, oh, my aunt is going through it. my sister just went through it. how does that change the way we see breast cancer? yeah it's like i said, it's just increasing prevalent. and i think that due to the pandemic, many people miss their appointments and their treatment . and that's why we have making strides against breast cancer. it's about getting connected to the community, raising awareness and of course, raising critical funds for the mission. so yeah, i'm assuming that working for an organization like making strides, perhaps you and i have something in similar in that we have good jobs, we have health insurance, we have sick days. even with all that dealing with the breast cancer diagnosis can be burdensome. and then i think about what about the women who don't have all these benefits? absolutely see, the health

planning? climate activists gathered near the oakland airport ahead of a public hearing on the proposed expansion. it would be the oakland airport's first major expansion in 40 years, adding a new terminal will add up to 16 new gates. activists say the increased air traffic and resulting pollution would put community members and the climate at risk. i want the port to realize means. think of yours where literally the future and you could either ruin it before it starts or save it. the port of oakland, which owns the airport and is overseeing the project, says it's experiencing an additional 24 million passengers by the year 2038. the poor says the port says it hopes to provide safe and modern facilities for the influx of passengers and attract customers from the east bay, who currently travel through sfo. what's important is the port of oakland, which owns and operates the airport. it has prioritized sustainable city in the development all along the way of this proposed airport project.

andre botello is starring in fall and drive. he says that while actors and writers continue their strike, they still have a deep passion for their industry. when i show up for these films, as you will see, i hope you show up on friday. you know i bleed for these films. you know, and i give my, you know, my craft, my soul. so, you know, we just want everyone to be compensated fairly. jennifer esposito has been an actor for years, but she's participated as a producer and director at this year's sidequest festival. her film fresh kills, was the featured film for opening night in san jose. centers around women in the mobster lifestyle. i knew that this was a genre that focused on the men, and i grew up around women in this culture , and they had voices and they had powerful voices and they had stories. and i thought, this is something we need to tell. why haven't we seen this? films will be shown at seneca through august 30th. art this weekend is the jazz blues punk festival at pittsburgh civic center. it's a two day event with a variety of

artists food, beer, wine and much more. we're joined now by some of the people involved with the fair's ashley johnson and colette simonton. we'll also have a performance by shawn rayford in just a moment. you'll be able to see an extended performance by him, by the way, this weekend. ashley thank you all so much for joining us today. thank you. all right. so this is how many years, ashley, has this been happening? it's been going on for quite a few years. i can speak a little bit more to that history. quite a few years. i mean, my first time was last year. i went out there for fun, ended up working the event when. yes she did. it was fun. but go ahead. tell us a little bit about the background of the event. so the event started back in the 90s actually as a completely different event, just blues. and then it's morphed into the jazz, blues and funk really to pay homage to our community and everything that it is, which is music. so this is the second year that will be at this location, which is at the civic center at 65 civic avenue, which is our grass area behind city hall. so it was a lot of fun. so ashley, tell us a little bit about the event and why you want more people to show up. i

mean, you had good turnout last year, but you'd love more to this year. yeah, i mean, it's a great event. it's fun community event. you get to come out, bring your kids, experience different music, different genres, have a little fun, hang out in the sun, meet some friends. we have a ton of great merchandise lined up for people to purchase, vendors. there's a ton of food vendors that are out there. we've got everything from gourmet burgers to filipino food, soul food. so, i mean, it's just a great time to come out and kind of enjoy your city. yeah, i mean, the food there was fantastic last year. you know, there was some lies, but you can order your food and go back and get it a little bit later. talk to us a little bit about the vendors that are going to be out there as well. some of our food vendors include soul food. we've got filipino food, oysters on the grill. that's the one i had last. oysters yes, those were huge and loaded up. so they'll be there again this year. so it's going be a lot of fun. and actually talk a little bit about the performance, the performers that are going to be there. we're going to hear from one of them in just a moment. but he can tell us about well, first, talk a little bit about sean rayford, who we're going to hear from in just a moment. so he is

our headliner for sunday. he does a soulful jazz, blues, r&b. he's great, phenomenal. like everything you hear from him, pretty much get you up and get you out of your seat. moving and grooving and just really enjoying the music. saturday we have chris kane, who is a legendary guitarist. he also does blues as well and kind of takes his inspiration from like b.b. king and people of those natures and he's just a great performer and really enjoyable to hear and see. last year he did. yes, he did as well. you know, in terms of the ambiance that's going to be there called describe to the viewers there who have not been there, kind of the ambiance there. i remember toward the end of the evening, everyone just kind of gathered on the grass, hung around and started to dance. and that was a lot of fun. talk a little bit about that. the best way to picture it is imagine this whole lawn space is your backyard for the whole day. and so you family, friends, kids, people of all ages just coming out, hanging out, listening to music, drinking beer and wine. we do have beer and wine booth eating some great food and just being surrounded by the wonderful sounds of jazz, blues and funk and ticket prices. actually, how much does it cost to attend the event, that type of thing. so lawn is free if you wanted to upgrade and join our vip tent, which offers you a drink ticket and orders and you've got the best seat in the house, it is $25 for one day. if you wanted to do two days in bundle, it's
