school district calls the strike illegal, but they're asking families not to send their kids to school. the student absences will be excused. the teachers plan to picket outside of schools and then meet and gather for a rally. structural engineers are keeping an eye on a bridge in oakland after a large fire shut down traffic. firefighters were called to the bridge south of lake merritt near the kaiser convention center last night. ktvu is. jana katsuyama spoke with one man who says he lost all of his possessions in that fire. smoke and flames billowed out from beneath lake merritt boulevard, right where an overpass crossed the waterway video from a drone and images posted on the citizen app showed the intensity of the fire when it first broke out. the location under the road with difficult to access. a total of 22 oakland firefighters for engines and a truck rushed to put out the fire column of black smoke was visible from a distance. the fire chief said they made sure not to use foam

, the front hubcap on the driver's side is missing. the man was found unresponsive by police last thursday in the back of the commercial parking lot near fern side boulevard in broadway. investigators say it appears someone tried to hide the body. if you have any information about this call alameda police. and we're seeing new video from san leandro of an armed carjacking. the alameda county sheriff's airplane took this video showing the suspect driving more than 100 miles an hour on surface streets eventually stopped the car and ran away and was eventually arrested. fortunately, no one was hurt. home surveillance video in berkeley captured the moment a car was burglarized. now, take a look. you see a man get out of an audi a four and then break into an older model of the same car. the main ransacks the car before getting back into his own car and driving away. that vehicle's owner says nothing of value was

stolen. but this is the fourth time his vehicle has been targeted. time is now. 404 oakland police are still searching for two people who fired shots at a woman who confronted them while they were breaking into her car. it happened early yesterday morning at 19th and broadway in downtown oakland. police say at least one shot was fired at the woman, but she was not hit people who live and work in the area. say gunfire and car break ins are happening more often. it's gotten so bad that even if you see your car broken into, it's not worth saying anything. now police say two suspects ran the 22nd and telegraph. that's where the police had a huge roadblock , but they still managed to get away. sandra fell high school teacher has been arrested after police determined she was under the influence on campus. a school employee at terra linda high school alerted school administrators monday that they believed tegan lienhard was under the influence of some substance. police were called to the school and determined she

court in san jose thursday afternoon. both are charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping and burglary. prosecutors say the pair know each other and the baby's mother through church. the two suspects hatched a plan to kidnap the three month old boy monday following a grocery shopping trip. investigators say patio is the man in this surveillance video taking the child from a second floor apartment on elm street. around one p.m. many of us have grown up. seen children's pictures on the back of milk cartons, the children missing and never recovered. and we were very concerned that something like that might happen . in this case, this crime touched off a massive search involving sjp de santa clara county sheriff's deputies, the chp and the fbi. nearly 20. hours later, the baby was found near regional medical center. the fact that the police found the child so quickly made it difficult if there had been any plans to move the baby to another location. the two suspects in court today are

have to think about. well, how do we do that? what are the strategies? we can't sort of used the old strategies because we know they haven't worked. so what's new? how can we innovate? how can we think differently about these really complex social problems being able to be group in a space of women who are committed, uh to the same issues and figure out okay. what's next? how are we going to regroup? how are we going to get back out there and, um, i think that's what i felt yesterday that we're all in this together and we still have work to do. and i think people women on the stage but also attending said okay. rebecca in which i think is really important for people that weren't able to attend or not able to watch the stream. what do you want your message to be in this conferences message to be about the challenges women are facing. um the message is, while we've made progress, there's still so much work to be done and that everyone has a role to play men. women, um

the afternoon, just to keep that in mind right now, traffic on the bay bridge looks pretty good, and we don't have any major problems in the east bay commute. it's five o'clock, let's get back to the headlines. all right. thank you, sal happening today a protest against uc berkeley's plan to build more student housing. now, those against the idea say they will disrupt classes at the university later today, ktvu is james torres joins us now this morning. this debate pits berkeley's housing crisis against residents who say they don't support the plan to build . good morning. james protest targets a plan to build more than 1000 units at people's park near counts campus. and the coalition against the plan says it will likely displace the homeless who lived there and increase further the cost of local housing. that's been a long time problem for the city of berkeley and the university as well. at one point, a judge activated and enrollment freeze for berkeley admission, saying the school would need to accept 3000 fewer students next year until they come up with more affordable housing ideas. the state legislature bypass that

now the university has nine sites in mind in and around the city to create more housing space. the school is not building on its own campus. berkeley's mayor says he sees both sides of the argument. i support building housing and all those nine sites, but we know that building housing in the city jurisdiction does create impacts on those neighborhoods. and so i think the university should also look at building housing on its campus core campus. as part of its solution. the student housing crisis is not unique to berkeley nor the bay area. recent reports nationwide say students across the country are reporting struggling to find on campus storms or apartments that major public universities. some even resorting to count surfing, renting motels or even sleeping in their own cars. today's demonstration will happen later today. starting at eight this morning, protesters will block sather gate on campus with signs while giving speeches about their cause. live in the

newsroom. i'm james torres. ktvu fox two news. alright james. thank you. time is 503 happening today. oakland teachers are expected to be on picket lines outside of several schools during a strike. the oakland education association, says 75% of its voting members supported the one day walkout, protesting plans to close several schools. school district calls the strike illegal, but they're asking families not to send their kids to school and student absences will be excused. teachers plan to picket outside of schools and then gather later for a rally. structural engineers are keeping an eye on a bridge in oakland after a large fire shut down traffic. firefighters were called to the bridge south of lake merritt near the kaiser convention center last night. ktvu jana katsuyama spoke with one man who says he lost all of his possessions in that fire. smoke and flames billowed out from beneath lake merritt boulevard, right where an overpass crossed the waterway video from a drone and images

know their property. jana katsuyama ktvu fox two news agenda. thank you. time is five. oh four. we're learning more about the suspicious death in alameda of a man whose body was found in a parking lot. police photos show a minivan the police believe may be connected to the case. it's a 1998 to 2000 and two white toyota sienna, the front hubcap on the driver's side is missing. and the man was found unresponsive by police last thursday in the back of the commercial parking lot near fern side boulevard in broadway. investigators say it appears somebody tried to hide the body. if you have any information about this call alameda police. san rafael high school teacher has been arrested after police determined she was under the influence on campus. a school employee at terra linda high school alerted a school administrator monday that they believed tegan lienhard was under the influence of some substance. now police were called to the school and test determined that she had more

thursday afternoon. both are charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping and burglary. prosecutors say the pair know each other and the baby's mother through church. the two suspects hatched a plan to kidnap the three month old boy monday following a grocery shopping trip. investigators say patio is the man in this surveillance video taking the child from a second floor apartment on elm street. around one p.m. many of us have grown up. seen children's pictures on the back of milk cartons, the children missing and never recovered. and we were very concerned that something like that might happen. in this case , this crime touched off a massive search involving sjp de santa clara county sheriff's deputies, the chp and the fbi. nearly 20. hours later, the baby was found near regional medical center. the fact that the police found the child so quickly made it difficult if there had been any plans to move the baby to another location. the two suspects in court today are being held with no bail and have

teachers are expected to be on the picket line at several schools during a strike. the oakland education association says 75% of its voting members support the one day walkout to protest the district's plans to close schools. the district is calling the strike illegal, but it is asking families not to send their children to school today. the student absences will be excused. teachers plan to picket outside the schools and then gathered for a rally family members of students. we spoke to say they understand the strike. they need to be in their community. and if you merge the schools that takes away the community that they've known other than their families. now the teachers are getting support from the longshore workers union at the port of oakland. they say they are also going to hold a work stoppage today partially in solidarity, but also to protest the new ways ballpark proposal at howard terminal. our time now 603 happening today, a new campus demonstration today in

berkeley tied to the battle over people's park. ktvu is james torres is here now to tell us how today's protest is tied to the housing crisis there in berkeley. good morning, james morning to you, david. it's no secret. uc berkeley has this housing shortage. in fact, that one point earlier this year a judge said the school would have to admit about 3000 fewer students because there wasn't enough housing available for the school's growing student population feel like most students go into this process blind and not knowing how bad and how difficult it is to find. over your head in berkeley. i definitely was not prepared. to be this stressed about housing every year and about like rent. california state legislature bypass that ruling, which now allows cow to continue its emissions as planned. now the university is working towards building more affordable housing . one plan targets people's park near the campus where the school hopes the house about students, the mayor of berkeley, says the

bridge near lake merritt, the amphitheater at about eight o'clock where the road goes over the estuary that feeds the lake . smoke and flames billowed out from beneath lake merritt boulevard. video from a drone and images posted on the citizen app show just how intense that fire was when it first started. the thick black smoke was visible from a distance. take a look at this. firefighters had a very hard time getting to that fire since it was underneath the road, and they say one man had a camp there. while he was not injured. all of us possessions were destroyed. had tools. i had hundreds hundreds of dollars of art material. i had collectible monies. i have ritual items right now. you know, we're just working on finding out if the individual would like additional housing opportunities. and anything that we can provide as a department and as a city to help them whether their house doran housed definitely our hearts go out to them because we

care about everyone and we care about you know their properties. firefighters told us that they did not use foam to fight the fire so they would not contaminate the water in the estuary. alright, our time is six oh 62 suspects are due back in court later today facing charges in the kidnapping of a three month old baby in san jose earlier this week. ktvu mike mibach here now, with the details of some new developments in this closely watched case, mike closely washed indeed, dave. good morning to you, 28 year old jose portillo and 43 year old yesenia ramirez made their first court appearance just yesterday. they're charged with conspiracy, kidnapping a child and first degree burglary following the child's abduction from his home. prosecutors say portillo is the man seen in surveillance video taking the child from a second floor apartment on elm street. this was one o'clock monday afternoon, the baby was found safe just a few miles from the child's home about 20 hours later. investigators say there are still a lot of unanswered questions involving this case,

including the motive for the kidnapping, but they add the two suspects knew the baby's mother through their church. the baby's mother spoke outside the courthouse yesterday. let me tell you. it's very hard as a mother to look at the woman who took your baby and being able to contain yourself from saying anything. you can't do anything . we are always incredibly concerned. when a child is taken from his mother. this afternoon . the two suspects are scheduled to return to the courthouse where they could enter a plea to those charges. a third person, once named as a suspect has been released from the county jail after the charges against him were dropped, however. prosecutors are not ruling out, taking him back into custody again if new evidence does come to light linking him to the kidnapping. pam will send it back to you. all right. thank you. mike bart is once again requiring masks on trains and in stations now, the bart board of directors approved a temporary

amendment. requiring face coverings until mid july. masks were encouraged on barred after that federal mandate was overturned last week, but they weren't required free masks will be available at all station agent booths and safety staff and bart police officers will offer a free mask to anyone. before they write any citations , which could be as much as $75. the intention of this measure is to protect those vulnerable communities. people who have underlying health conditions, people who are, you know, compromise the kids under five who are still not yet eligible to be vaccinated. now it comes as bart just had its highest ridership day since the pandemic began. that was on wednesday because of the giants game and the warrior's playoff game passengers. we spoke to say they are fine with masks on the trains. i think it's a good idea . um and if there is like, ah,

two weeks before that there were 73 positive cases when they returned to court. overall the ruby princess can carry about 5000 people, and the ship is now being investigated by the cdc. the berkeley unified school district has released new numbers on covid-19. it says new cases tripled at berkeley schools last week when compared to the week before the district says the 91 new cases last week, likely due to the highly transmissible omicron variant and the loosening of mask restrictions. the health department says the increase reflects an increase in covid cases all around the bay area. and marin county is responding to the recent rise in the number of covid cases by tightening safety recommendations for things like prompts and graduations, according to the marin independent journal. the county health department says it's been a big increase in cases after spring break and recent events and recently more than 50 students at redwood high school. tested positive after

parents in the district to keep kids home today district wide, they say they won't be able to cover all the staff absences. of the district calls this one day strike an illegal labor action. the union obviously disagrees with that, and the o e. a, says 75% of its voting members supported today's one day strike. they also have a lot of support from families and parents in the community, as we heard from one grandmother of a student at carl monk elementary , that school is also on the closure list. here's what she said. and the teachers here are very supportive. they love their children, family. i think it's important that this school remains open as well as the other schools. oakland unified school district says these closures are necessary to deal with a steep budget deficit. in a statement to ktvu, the district's chief academic officers has quote in our district. we've been facing declining enrollment for decades , sustaining many small schools stretches our resources thinly across too many schools. instead

so many people lives were changed forever. this county graves county is where mayfield resides in western kentucky. for perspective. it's about 30 miles or so to the east of the mississippi river, as the crow flies about 45 minute drive or so and looking at the damage that we've seen in this town. i mean, the images are incredible. the drone footage that days after the tornado moved through , we captured and from from the site. you see just how extensive it was this town about 10,000 people call it home and more than 10% still remain displaced and the business affected residential areas affected the part of downtown mayfield, where we sit. we have the historic courthouse where that courthouse is now taking on that damage, and it remains closed. only three weeks ago, the post office was able to reopen here in the city of mayfield, so that process is very slow. it's been about five months since this tornado moved through, and it

was one of the higher end tornadoes when we measure those on the enhanced fujita scale, and ef four and with the f four and f five tornadoes. that's when we talk about the landscape completely changing where towns become unrecognizable. we think back to 2011. perhaps you've heard of the city of joplin, missouri or tuscaloosa. those towns were hit by an ef five tornado back in 2011 and the town still looks different. nearly 10 11 years after that event, so when we come to today on this arbor day, fox weather and one tree planted, has partnered together and joined forces. there's some pencil holly's those evergreens that are going to be donated. one of the park's just about five minutes or so away from where we're located here, and that's just a small thing, especially when you look at the scope of the damage. but it's the beginnings of the process that will take years to recover. so a silver lining at least today on this arbor day, dave back to
