a small plane crashes in oregon, killing one person. they were on their way to the eclipse viewing area. we learned about the pilots possible tied to the bay area. the 10:00 news on ktvu fox 2 starts now. an investigation underway to discover the cause of the deadly lane crash. >> the plane went down yesterday afternoon near and airport in oregon, known

hotspot for those chasing the solar eclipse. it crashed and burned into flames. >> we have live coverage tonight from the sam carlos airport the flight is said to have originated. >> reporter: that is right. many of the pilots we spoke to here at the sam carlos airport did not want to talk about the crash, either because they do not have enough information, or they did not know the pilot who lost his life. we did hear some interesting theories about how this crash could have happened. on a regular races, planes and leaving this airport for oregon. >> tens, if not hundreds of people going to oregon, boise, and other areas just to see 10 minutes of the eclipse. >> reporter: one plane and its pilot did not make it. the single engine plane crashed

at around 1:50 in the afternoon. fully engulfed in flames, first responders raced to the scene, just 1 mile south of the airport. the brothers watch from a distance. >> i was driving my grandpa's four wheeler around the pasture and i saw the plane come down and crash in the canyon over there. >> it went down. >> reporter: it was connected to a bay area pilot from menlo park. there expecting 400 flights in advance of monday's eclipse. without a control tower, a mobile tower was brought in to handle the air traffic. this in itself can prove challenging. >> i believe that they probably put a temporary person with the radio, rather than a physical

tower, because it is only for one day, which makes it somewhat challenging for whoever works on the ground trying to come -- control the airplanes of the air. we run was one of many pilots who did not know the man who lost his life and are now questioning how the accident happened. >> there tons of fires in oregon. i'm curious to see where it this airport is. i came from portland on wednesday this week and i counted at least 20 fires in many areas around medford in the north all the way to salem. the eclipse is expected to last two minutes. the pilot we spoke to said that he doubted that the plane was poorly constructed, because it had been in the ever quite some time. he said that with all the forest fires happening right now, visibility is very poor at the lower elevations in oregon. preparations are well

it is dark see cannot see the fog in detail, but we have a few patches already working their way back into the area right now. in terms of the eclipse, you've been hearing a lot about it with the sun, the moon, the earth, all in alignment, under the partial eclipse setting up for your monday morning. here's the path of the total eclipse, moving across the country and here's a forecasted cloud cover as well. some clouds could be interrupting the path along the nations midsection. for us, we're worried about low clouds and fog. tomorrow morning, near the coast and in the bay, lots of overcast out there. will notice clear skies well inland. this is 7:00 monday morning. it will take the right until the 9:00 hour. still some lingering patches. will begin. the my 10:00, the clouds clear up to the shoreline. will also be around the coast as well. the main message is that the

two suspects charged with the fatal stabbing of that hairdresser in july were allegedly part of a sexual fantasy. they are both appearing in a chicago courtroom for a bond hearing. they conspired to work together to step him nearly 70 times. after an extensive manhunt earlier this month, the two were arrested in the bay area. prosecutors say that the victim

was his boyfriend and his death was part of a sexual fantasy between latham and warned, that included killing someone of than themselves. both men were denied bail. the chp is investigating a deadly crash involving a car that what 100 feet off the road. it happened just before 1 am today. the highway patrol says that at least one person died in the crash. one lane was closed during the investigation, but has since been reopened. the rest a man who they say led 80s on a chase. the responded to a stolen video near a gas station at around 8:30 pm yesterday. during the chase, they ran -- rammed a patrol car and crashed into another car. sheriff's officials confirmed that at least one deputy fired a shot at the suspect, but no one was struck. the driver was arrested. he is been identified as a man from pittsburgh.

do-it-yourself viewer. >> reporter: as the frenzy to find eclipse glasses comes to a sold-out close, folks are searching for new ways for safe solar eclipse viewing. optometrist everywhere have warmed -- warned of the danger and say that sunglasses will work. >> there a couple of do-it- yourself ways to do. one is called a pinhole viewer. you can hold the first piece of paper, cover it with tinfoil, the new put your back to the sun and you should see an inverted version of the sun on the piece of paper. for more advanced version, take a shoebox, covered up with tinfoil, and used a tactic poke a hole in it. inside of the shoebox on the other side from the hole, will take a white piece of paper and place it in there. we're back to the sun and why law. >> if none of those options work for you, if you one of these lying around, a welding

there a lot of 60s out toward concorde, fairfield, napa. we probably have some high clouds approaching the bay area with the thunderstorms out to the sierra. looks like the storms have dissipated and here we go with the fog hanging out co-side and around the bay. the higher clouds in the onshore breeze which is transporting it back to the region. low clouds likely for the coast. low clouds possible around the bay, especially closer to san francisco. tomorrow at around 10:15, we are expecting cooler skies is a work your way inward. >> this is been developing a sitting out here in the pacific. for tomorrow, no big changes out there. we had hopes that this could actually mix up the marine layer, but it looks like we will still have low clouds and fog to talk about once again for tomorrow morning. into next week, we will gradually warm things back up.
