traffic continues to move along very nicely westbound coming into san francisco. agent an eight minute drive time. and also looking at 101 and 280 northbound and southbound, the traffic continues to look gad. there is road work on some of the freeways. but it's not causing any major delays. at 4:30, let's go back to the desk. we begin with breaking news at the oakland international airport where a person has been detained following a small fire inside the airport. now we are told that fire started at terminal one just before 3:30 this morning. no reports of any injuries at this time but a person was detained in the back of an alameda county sheriffs car in connection with this incident. we are working to get more details about this breaking story. alex savidge is out there at the airport and we will check in with him in a little bit. two people were rushed to the hospital with burns after a fire in san leandro. that happened just before 1:00 this morning at a three unit apartment building on 159th

avenue. not very far from interstate 580. when firefighters arrived on the scene, there were flames coming from the bottom apartment. investigators believe that fire may have started in a cooking accident. the second person suffered smoke inhalation. two animals in that apartment, a cat and a dog were also injured. taken to a local veterinarian. people living in the top two apartments were allowed back into their homes. time is 4:32. san francisco police say one woman was knocked unconscious during a post game fight outside of at & t park. it happened at second and king streets. police say the woman was punched in the face and knocked out while trying to break up a fight. she was treated for serious injuries at san francisco general hospital. one man suffered minor injuries. police still looking for the suspects. this fight outside of at & t park came one day after a los angeles jury awarded $18 million in damages to bryan

stow. he suffered permanent brain damage after two people attacked him outside of dodgers stadium three years ago. they ruled poor stadium security made them responsible for the brutal beating. there is no recalls for the mayor to resign after her heated exchanges with members of the community. ktvu news obtained cell phone video of one of those arguments. >> you are a bunch of bullies. you are a bunch of women abusers. >> this confrontation between vice mayor j van coo beckles and community activists happened 11 days ago. >> she is vice mayor. she speaks for all of us. this is into believe >> beckles is defending her

actions. saying the video does not tell the whole story. she says she felt cornered and bullied the community members. a woman is dead and two others hurt. the first happened around 8:00 last night. a man and woman were shot. the woman died at the hospital. at 9:45 another shooting was reported. a male juvenile was shot there and is now in stable condition at the hospital. so far no arrests have been made in either shooting. the friday summer nights program includes free food, games and entertainment at three different locations. the event begins at 6:00 p.m.. police in palo alto are increasing neighborhood patrols after someone broke into an elderly couple's home while they were sleeping. it happened early wednesday

morning at the home of via vista avenue. belmont police reports three cases of someone stealing packages from some high end stores off front porches. now they have this lead. a homeowner released this video of a man walking up to the house, walking away with a package in his arms. police say it's unusual since they haven't had a single case of a package being stolen. now they have three. all in the same belmont heights neighborhood on the same day. people who live there say it makes them uncomfortable. >> it is disturbing to imagine that someone is scoping out the neighborhood during the day when a lot of people are at work. >> i'm not surprised. i think the criminals are just very bold these days and going

where there is an opportunity. >> the suspect is described as light skinned, short dark hair. he may be driving a dark colored toyota pree us. police are asking homeowners in that area to share any home surveillance videos they have. cal train says commuters can expect normal train service on the peninsula. that is after a deadly accident last night. the southbound commuter train struck and killed a man who was walking along the tracks near watkins avenue. the man who died may have intentionally walked in front of the train. cal train reopened the tracks in both directions earlier this morning. chevron is a step closer to upgrading the richmond refinery. they started hairing comments wednesday night but there was so much interest in the topic they continued the hearing last night. they want to make the facility more modern so it can process more crude oil that has higher levels of sulfur. some people living nearby do

not believe that. after a 19 month legal battle to stay open, drakes bay oyster farm is preparing to shut down in three weeks. the owner of drakes bay told the marin independent journal its cannery and shack will be closed by july 31st. attorneys continue to talk. there is a chance for an extension. the supreme court's refusal to hear the company's appeal last month was the final blow for the oyster farm. they ordered drakes bay to close in 2012 when its 40-year lease expired. the city of oakland is unvailing a plan to bring electric streetcars back to the heart of oakland. oakland had a wide spread electric trolley system called the key system that took riders to many bay area cities including san francisco. it was dismantled about 60 years ago. now oakland is looking at an updated version that would run a line that goes from the amtrak station at jack london square up to broadway. >> and that would be clean and

green and not used fossil fuel. but it would also bring back us to the future. >> the idea is being explored through a $300,000 cal trans grant. if there is federal money available, the streetcars could be running again in oakland by 2017. happening today low income families can register to receive free school supplies. parents can sign up their children for backpacks filled with calculators, papers, crayons, pencils, and pens. they will start interviewing parents about their needs starting at 4:00 and signups will take place at sacred heart on first street? san jose. the backpacks will be handed out next month. >> already talking about school supplies. >> i know. time is 4:38. coming up a sonoma county jewelry store owner fights back about two sisfected robbers. >> it was a real life shootout. unbelievable. >> coming up at 5:00 what happened after and the search still under way.

russell. they killed russell for the thrill of it. his friend faces a separate trial that begins this month. there is a california connection to the mass killing at a houston suburb. the suspected gunman ron haskell went from his home in orange county to texas to track down his ex-wife. he forced his way into -- a husband and wife four of their children were killed. the lone survivor was a 15-year- old daughter who was grazed in the head with a bullet. she played dead until haskell left. her grandparents in southern california were able to call her in the hospital. >> i said i was so sorry about everything that has happened. but that i'm thankful you are still with us. she said i hope mom and dad are in a better place. i said i know that. >> a restraining order was  issued against haskell in

commander. this photo my add fuel to the propaganda. there is a new controversy over the crosses that cover a hillside in memories of the americans that lost their lives in the east war. they started going up nearly ten years ago. but with troops no longer fighting in iraq, there are new questions about what should happen to them. the woman who owned the land died three years ago. now her six children must agree on what happens next. they are considering letting the crosses stay up, selling the land to a nonprofit group to maintain or building homes for veterans or senior citizens there. palo alto decided to remove 12 trees from a popular park. but 18 trees will remain. nine of the trees will be cut down because they are not healthy. the others are being removed to make room for a new playground, improve visibility on a bike path, or for the health of a

that. good morning, everybody. let's go out and take a look at the commute. we are doing very well so far. and hopefully we will have a friday light situation where things are going to be a little better than they normally are. getting into san francisco still taking about eight minutes or less coming into the city with no major issues. also the morning commute looks good in oakland on 880 north and southbound. that traffic is moving nicely from hayward to oakland and the other way around. and if you are driving in san jose, still some road work. especially on the way to it. from the peninsula but traffic is light. let's go to steve. good morning, everybody. there is a low right off the coast. south wind for some. mainly peninsula south bay and on the mild side. and for others like santa cruz and north bay that could be a cool direction. yesterday was kind of quiet until 2:00, 3:00. san francisco was one

benefiting from this south wind. 58 to start. 68 for a high. exactly the same as yesterday. the tropical clouds should lift out of here but again north bay, up to mendocino county, lake county and east better opportunity than anyone else. the low clouds there is is plenty to go around. they are making a strong surge. the south wind means reeling in the clouds. a lot of low 60s here. i doubt these change too much. even santa clara valley. ever that is because of that south, southeast breeze. it's not as pronounced today as it was yesterday. but still southerly, southeast, a little more westerly for sfo. west at hayward. yesterday they were south. that will be a little cooler direction today. there is something wrong here out at travis. as pam said how do you dress for that when it's calm and then get a 31 miles an hour gust. what is it like out there today? concord west, napa west. that is a cool direction for them this time of year.

shower activity continues to just miss us, but they are moving through parts of mendocino county and lake county. any rain would be brief and move really fast out of the picture. up to the sierra there will be another round of showers. 76 in reno. there were big boomers by las vegas yesterday. fog, fair. there will be higher clouds. maybe a few hit and miss little showers. there will definitely be drizzle on the coast. 60s and 70s. we are really close here on the temps. it's not that big of a spread on a lot of these. fog, sun, nice. the fog will burn off sooner. we will take that into sunday, monday, and tuesday. >> thank you, steve. there is an important meeting with the a's today about a lease extension at the coliseum. some city council members want to change the agreement and have the a's pay millions of dollars more. but the team says it does not want to renegotiate. the oakland city council will discuss the lease extension at

a special meeting next week. speaking of the a's they have bay area bragging rights after taking three or four gails from the san francisco giants and the latest bay bridge series. yesterday at & t park the giants bats were quiet. to say the least. while the a's batted around during a four run sixth. the a's went on to win 6-1. the a's still have the best record in the majors while the giants lost for the 19th time in their last 23 home games. they still remain in second place. one game behind the l.a. dodgers. that is a fun series. >> definitely. 4:50 is the time. out with the old, in with the new. coming up in 20 minutes the upgrades coming to san francisco's parking meters that can help drivers avoid expensive parking tickets. >> i can only imagine what a little kid goes through when they sit in a car. >> he locked himself in a hot car on purpose to prove a point. what this police officer experienced in a few short minutes.

yesterday after that horrendous deadly accident involving a big rig and at least ten cars. a lieutenant with the chp says it looked like a war zone. you can see it right there. a 26-year-old man from santa cruz was killed. seven people were taken to the hospital. the truck driver told ktvu news he tried slamming on the brakes but realized he couldn't stop. >> i feel sorry for the person who lost his life and i'm sorry for all the persons that are injured. >> the driver has only been driving trucks for three months. the owner of the truck showed ktvu paper work saying they did a safety check yesterday morning before the crash. the chp is promising a thorough investigation. next month the california highway patrol will conduct a special operation aimed at reducing the number of motorcycle collisions. statewide the chp says deadly motorcycle involved crashes dropped 35% from 2008 to 2010. but they rose29% by 2012.

extra officers will specifically focus on highway 12 in napa and solano counties. a louisiana police officer is gaining national attention this morning for purposely locking himself in a car for ten minutes to show how the heat can turn deadly. >> my under shirt is soaking wet. my socks soaking wet. i'm breathing like i just took a jog around the police department. >> within seconds he broke a sweat and at nine minutes and he complained he could barely breathe. the police department is hoping the video will discourage anyone from leaving a child or pet in a car. even if only for a few short minutes. a wild fire in central washington has grown dramatically. since then the fire has burned nearly 18,000 acres. a dozen homes have been evacuated. 200 others are now threatened. a second fire nearly 40 miles

since it is friday this morning. it is friday, july 11th i'm pam cook. >> that makes you happy. >> that does make me happy. >> let's talk about your weather and traffic. >> we do have clouds and rain up to the north. some of that might just clip parts of mendocino county and lake county. but for us it's a big fog bank and low clouds and drizzle on parts of the coast and a really mild pattern for some and cool for others. again we will favor the south bay. lows are 60s. they are pretty mild. everyone is really close. even orinda. most are hovering around 60 degrees. tropical clouds will fire up again over the northern sacramento valley. and there is -- well they have the red flag warning out because of the lightning. there is all sorts of issues to the north. drizzle, higher clouds. it will be partly sunny
