nearby. ktvu's janine de la vega is on the scene and joins us live with who police were looking for. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. there was a massive police presence on story road. it used to be closed in both directions for the past hour and a half. it's back open. officers were looking for a man who tried to rob this check- cashing place. police saturated the area of story road near carl looking for a man armed with a gun. officers say just before 8:00 a.m., he confronted an employee of a check-cashing facility on story road showing a firearm. shots were fired. the suspect ran away into the neighborhood. police called in the s.w.a.t. team and secured a perimeter around a half-mile area. residents were told to stay inside because they believed that the gunman was hiding somewhere there. chopper 2 was above the scene when officers finally located him just after 10:30 on

cinderella drive. they brought him out on a stretcher because he injured. >> it appears he was in the rear of a residence in the 200 block of cinderella. he was resistant to officers. he's transported to the hospital for injuries he sustained while resisting arrest. >> reporter: the suspect's injuries are non-life- threatening. shortly after he was arrested. police were able to recover the gun he used in the attempted robbery. officers lifted the perimeter and residents were allowed to start leaving their homes again. employees of the check-cashing place are not injured. right now, police have still not released the identity of the suspect but they are still investigating this case. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. and now to our continuing coverage on the looming b.a.r.t. strike. we're counting down to the expiration of the b.a.r.t. union's 3046 day contract extension -- 30-day contract

extension which happens this sunday. talks resumed this morning and ktvu's tara moriarty joiferns -- join us live from outside of the building where they are meeting. any word how they are going? >> reporter: not yet but contentious is how they are described. it's the fourth time that both sides have met and so far we've not seen any smiles. they trickled in after 10:00 this morning weary. >> if i had something to say, i would. >> reporter: mooney, chief negotiate said -- negotiator said they 134eu9ed a proposal july 27th -- submitted a proposal july 27th and they've not received a response. >> i'm very concerned about the deadline looming. we're doing everything we can from the union standpoint to make sure that a contract is ratified. >> reporter: key, healthcare

and pensions are the key issues. if b.a.r.t. does not budge by tomorrow morning, they will issue a 72- hour b.a.r.t. strike. the last strike struck the bay area hard. cars jammed freeways and riders grew frustrated by long lines. >> a long day at work. it's very tiring. >> reporter: tonight at 5:00, b.a.r.t. is planning a downtown rally. >> we've received information that there may be an occupant element that will want to participate with today's event. zblnkthsd oakland police are beefing up staffing -- >> reporter: oakland police are efbooing up staffing. >> we've -- are beefing up staffing. >> we're monitoring and we're also recording the crowd. >> reporter: the union say the rally begins at frank ogawa plaza and plan to march at ac

download the app. the threat of a second b.a.r.t. strike comes as the transit agency deals with rising crime rates in and around san francisco stations. according to new crime stats, violent crimes and thefts have sparked. experts say the increase is partially due to prawrt's recent -- b.a.r.t.'s recent record ridership. another reason might be the increase of cell phone thefts. we're getting new details from stay campus police about an arrest about a beating on tuesday night. 24-year-old christopher bowen is in custody. plus say he bashed a 22-year- old victim's head into the sidewalk at the science building. it appears the two knew each other but neither had ties to the university. police say a woman was assaulted near the santa clara university campus early this morning. investigators say it happened around 1:30 a.m. as the woman walked

lexington street. they say she was able to fight off her attacker and he ran off. the woman suffered minor injuries. officers responded to the scene and searched the area with police dogs. they were not able to locate the attacker. a judge in cleveland this morning sentenced ariel castro to life in prison without the possibility of parole. castro held three women as sex slaves in his home for years. he pleaded guilty to 937 charges, ranging from kidnap and rape to aggravated murder for induces miss carriages in the women. one of the woman spoke. [inaudible] >> you would leave and come home to torture us. you deserve to spend life in prison.

>> castro told the court he's not a monster but abducted the women to satisfy his sexual addiction. crews are back at these two goodwill store locations, one in san francisco, one in burlingame to make sure there are no bedbugs. sal castanedo talked to customers and joins us live to explain what is being done today. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon. today, the nation continues to come in here at the goodwill center in san francisco inside the warehouse workers tented off a small area of the warehouse and they are eliminating the bedbug infestation. goodwill says enough material to fill 15 dumpsters was thrown away. anything that was closed to the bedbugs is gone. >> oh, sure. you could take home an infestation. you have to. >> reporter: now, goodwill says the news was better on the

peninsula, especially with the trained dogs that found no trace of the pests. we found people shopping at the closing section here at goodwill in san francisco. officials say the infestation albeit small is well-contained. however, the nonprofit says it has still lost thousands of dollars because they had to throw out merchandise and thousands more to clean up. some worry the publicity surrounding the bedbug infestation will cause a drop in business. >> it won't keep you from shopping here? >> no. i've been shopping here since i came here 25 -- 25 years ago. >> well, goodwill says the best thing you can do in lieu of donations, not donating material but donating money. right now, the warehouse space is limited. they are still feening up. after the cleanup is done and that's expected to be taken care of by the end of the week,

gunfire erupted on a busy antioch street. investigators worked through the night as they collected evidence and conducted interviews. claudine wong explains how the violence unfolded in this

report. >> reporter: investigators today are still trying to figure out what led to this deadly shooting in antioch just after 7:45 last night. the back window of this car shattered by the bullets that left one man dead and another critically injured. >> everybody was staring. there were cars parked around. the police were trying to detour everybody around to delta fair and it was -- was a pretty crazy scene. >> reporter: that is what only one of two crime scenes. this scene is about a half-mile away. that's where police shay the shots were fired as the two victims were in their car driving down the road. police believe someone in a cold-colored four-door sedan started shooting. both victims were hit. the driver kept going until he got to somersville road where police found them. one victim, a man from richmond, was pronounced dead at the scene. the other man, from vallejo,

was listed in critical condition. police would not release other information. streets were shut down as police collected evidence and conducted inview -- interviews. those who work in the area also trying to make sense of it all. >> we're still trying to figure out what's going on. >> reporter: this shooting happened and a fairly busy roadway in antioch. investigators hope anyone with information will call them. they do expect more information to be released later this afternoon. in antioch, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. in oakland, police are investigating a deadly shooting on 8 on the avenue near international boulevard. it happened -- 80th avenue near international boulevard. no word yet on a suspect. new at noon, an alarming report out today shows the number of suicides by gun in the bay area is on the rise. the centers for disease control says 325 people, age 10 and older, committed suicide by gun

in the bay area between 2009 and 2010. that compares to 242 suicides three years earlier. a 34% jump. the number of suicides increased as the unemployment rate rose. moms demand action, that group, came out and they were on capitol hill pushing for stricter gun controls. >> more guns equals more violence and deaths. not everyone who has a gun should have won. there ed needs to be more regulation of guns and ammunition. >> the cdc says while suicides are on the rice, the number -- rise, the number of for homicides are down. this morning, edward snowden left the moscow airport, where he had been confined for more than a month while russian officials decided his fate. snowden's father hopes to obtain a visa to see his son. the u.s. had urged russia to turn over snowden but there's

no extradition treaty between the two nations. the federal government is investigating reports of alleged unethical actions by lawyers in connection with the asiana crash. the ntsb is checking reports that lawyers had been soliciting the victims. u.s. law bans lawyers from approaching passengers during the first 45 days after a crash. the ntsb says the complaints involved websites and the attorneys personally soliciting passengers. the so-called morning-after pill hit store shelves. the emergency contraception plan-b is now available over the counter in some pharmacies and grocery stores. the pill is designed to prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. for the first time there are no age restrictions. some bay area residents had mixed emotions about that. >> honestly, i don't think that kids should be able to have access to that. >> i think it's absolutely

great. a woman has a right to do with her body what she wishes and the supreme court has so stated. >> the federal government fought to keep the drug age restricted but gave up last month after losing a series of court battles. the cost of the bills range from $50 to $7 5. a los angeles county man infected with west nile virus has died. he died tuesday night. health officials are still trying to determine whether his death was caused by west nile virus. the virus can be deadly among the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. both people who contract west nile have mild or no symptoms. one person in california has died of west nile virus so far this year. meanwhile tonight, in north san jose, crews are scheduled to spray for mosquitoes. fogging is scheduled to begin at 11:00 p.m. near montague expresswayway, sierra road and orchard.

this comes after the vector control says mosquitoes in the area tested positive for the virus. garbage collection rates are going up in san francisco. the average cost for three 32- gallon bins jumped from $28 to $34. customers can offset the hike by switching to a smaller 20- gallon garbage bin and a larger 64-gallon recycling bin. the option is designed to help san francisco reach -- zero waste by 2020. well, hope you are sitting down because most of the coast is clear. that's not something we've said. there's a few patches of fog hanging on. not much. most of the fog that's been front and center, a little chewed up. re-formed tonight. there were definitely holes in it. inland temperatures have cooled down.

can't really support it as much. it being the conditions on the fog. only patchy low clouds. it's been windy. a final look at some of the information coming in for july for san francisco. the mean temperature was 61. the 30-year average, 60.3. the max, 66.3, normal, almost 66.5. well, it is. and then the minimum really close as well, just slightly under. the key, though, for san francisco and much of the coast for july was the amount of fog, 26 out of 31 days. san francisco had fog. most of the coast as well. however we've cleared most of that out. the normal pattern has been fog, cool by the coast, warm to hot inland. that pattern is broken. we have a situation where low pressure entered the north. it really ramped up the breeze. we had gusts to 40 miles an hour this morning. area of low pressure is moving in the pacific northwest but another piece will break up. concord, gusts 33.

fairfield has had gusts to 30. there were gusts to 40 at the altamont pass. 20, 25 in san francisco. sfo, 15. hayward out of the west, livermore northwest, san jose a little bit of a southerly breeze. over all it's breezy. we had 40s for a lot of lows. i know there were a couple of low 40s. graden, 42. mill valley, st. helena checking in, i think we'll see that again tonight as the fog will be hard-pressed to do much. there's a little bit left. i think in a couple of hours it will be gone. we can say the coast is clear. it's pretty breezy to windy. some locations didn't have much of a breeze. the howling breeze. patchy fog, but a quiet pattern for august and not only the first week but maybe the second week. it does not look like there's any heat on the way. we'll see how this shapes up. that's what the forecast models are saying. sun for the coast, yes. cooler inland temperatures. also breezy at times. i mean in vacaville and

clearlake, 86. that's definite lit cooler for everybody else going west which means a lot of 70s or 60s by the coast. even with the sun, you are still getting more of a west or northwest breeze. some low 80s. mid-80s. a lot of 70s. including san jose, milpitas. saratoga is in there. 60s on the coast. south san francisco and then 70s on the peninsula. if you like this kind of weather, i think you will like the five-day. i can go out ten. it looks quieter. we'll see how long it lasts. i don't see any sign of anything changing. >> we'll just check the number to continue. >> twitter nation is happy for the most part. >> yes. about an hour and a half ago, oakland began stret closures as part of the art and soul festival. this morning, the city shut down clay street from 11th to 12th street. the city plans to shut down a couple of blocks of 12th and 14th street as well as jefferson street. and the clay street closure

the s&p 500 index surpassed 1700 points for the first time thanks to earnings gains at several u.s. companies and facebook may actually close above $38 for the first time. right now it's $38.03. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is up 107. the nasdaq is up 42. s&p up 18 at 1703. among the reasons for the strong numbers on wall street, signs that the job market continues to strengthen. the weekly report of new claims for unemployment benefits came in at 326,000. the lowest level in five and a half years. that was after a drop of 19,000 from the week before. the government is scheduled to report the july unemployment rate tomorrow. the 49ers' defense could be taking a hit after the team announced today that inside linebacker patrick willis is injured. the six-time pro bowler has a slight fracture in his right hand. however, the 9ers remain optimistic saying the team will proceed with caution and likely
