something that might be effected by the gusty winds. as you look at san francisco it looks good. here at the bay bridge toll plaza it is light. let's go back to the desk. thank you. as sal and steve has been saying high winds are causing problems across the bay area. toppling trees and knocking out power to thousands. tara moriarty is live in san francisco to show us how the high wind advisory is eventing drivers there on the great highway. >> reporter: steve says it's about 40 miles an hour right now. the wind gusts out here. but it certainly feels a lot stronger than that. signs have blown down. if we pan over to the left there is a car with its flashers on that got stuck in the sand and trying to get it out. we're along the great highway. you can see sand is blown in drifts all over the roadway. it's really hard to see out here. the sand keeps blowing in your eyes. we spoke to a city crew that shut down the highway from lincoln slope where we are standing. next they will be shutting down the road from here to skyline.

the few drivers that brave the conditions out here say it's hazardous. a car wheels simply getting stuck in the sand. >> we went through a couple big sand dunes when we were going about 40 miles an hour. and set off the alarm. my knee hit the key and the car alarm was buzzing and it was pretty exciting. but yeah. sand all over the place. cigarette doesn't seem like we're in san francisco. >> no. >> reporter: now in the amazon neighborhood on mission and geneva highway high winds knocked over trash cans. spilling garbage all over the place. this will be seen everywhere especially by those effected by the garbage strike. bay area bridges under a high wind advisory. carquinez, richmond, san rafael, and golden gate. high profile vehicles as sal mentioned like big rigs, camp

everies and trailers are not recommended. they are still trying to get the car out of the sand right here. it just really is blowing out here. deaf netly would recommend -- definitely would recommend those that use the great highway i would avoid it. >> definitely windy out there. thank you. if you will be flying out of sfo later today, you may want to check your flights. delays due to wind are possible after 8:00 this morning. wind is expected to result in changes in the runway configuration. causing planes to take off or land in different runways than initialen strong and gusty winds are expected in the airport until at least 5:00 p.m.. this is video from pleasant hill that came into the channel 2 newsroom. the strong winds brought down a big rig crushing a pickup truck there. two cars were damaged. fortunate there are no reports

of injuries. high winds have knocked out power to thousands in the bay area. 14,800 customers are without power in the peninsula. 4600 have also last power in san francisco. more than 3200 are without power in the north bay. 1100 have lost power in the south bay. and 850 are without power in the east bay. but we'd like to see some of the weather pictures you've been taking this morning. just send them to photos at ktvu.com or up load them on our facebook or twitter pages. while it has been raining and windy here in the bay area, the sierra has been getting hammered with snow. this is a live look at the snow coming down on interstate 880. the snow is welcome news for ski resorts that are hoping to extend the ski season a little bit longer. extense flames erupted from a neighborhood near downtown christien kafton is live at the scene. what can you tell us now? >> reporter: we arrived here

just about a half hour ago when we saw active flames. we can tell you right now sunnyvale fire is getting control of the scene. let's give you a live look here. you can see the front of the hemp the fire broke out in a garage. at least two buildings were involved so far. we have video we shot as we arrived on scene here of flames leaping from the garage of the building we were showing you a moment ago from a neighboring duplex and burning the roof of that duplex. so far no reports of any injuries. several families have been evacuated from their homes. including that home with the garage where this firming mated and the duplex i told you about. at least two families evacuated from that duplex. we told to the owner of that duplex he said he was awakened by an explosion. he says light filled his room and ran out of his home. he left everything in there. computer, cell phone. all of those items we need on a

daily basis. he and his family were in a rush to make it out of the home and the flames were so intense that they left everything behind. you can see now the flames now gone. we see steam in the area. that is again a very good sign. that means sunnyvale fire has gotten the control of this fire out here. we are looking to see if we can speak with the battalion chief now that things have calmed down top to find out the origin of that fire. again the neighbor describing that as an explosion taking place. clearly the source of that fire one of the big questions this morning. also how the weather may have played a factor in this. because we certainly saw that the flames leapt from one building to another and there have been very windy conditions here in the south bay as wellen. clearly the wind and weather may have been a contributing factor. again a lo of questions we are looking to answer. we'll get to the bottom of this. for now we are live in

sunnyvale. we are following developing news out of san francisco where police are looking for the suspect of an attempted robbery. it happened at the happy donuts on bay shore boulevard just a short time ago. the owner of the store was shot after getting into a confrontation with the suspect. the victim stabbed the suspect during the fight. the owner is expected to survive. police are now trying to find the gunman. two men remain in critical condition following a police shooting in san francisco. it happened early tomorrow morning. police say one man pulled out a weapon during a fight between two groups of people who just left a bar. police say they were forced to open fire to protect the crowd. a gunman and second man were wounded. this is the second police shooting in the bay area in the past few days in which officers fired on suspects carrying fake guns. these so-called replica guns are causing big problems for

police. it's nearly impossible for them to -- especially when police are forced to make a split second decision. there have been nearly 20 officer involved shootings. here's a look at the numbers. there have been five shootings in alameda county. four in san francisco. four also in san jose. two in contra costa county. two in napa and one in sonoma county. president obama is traveling to hartford, connecticut to once again push her gun control legislation. this are be the president's second visit to connecticut since the newtown school shootings back in december. last week president obama made a stop in colorado the site of the aurora theater shooting. senate debate could begin as early as tomorrow. time now is 4:37. we've been talking about the wind all morning long. let's go to sal to get our traffic. and sal you are looking at the east shore. >> we are. and it will be a tough drive all over the place as we have been trying to make clear to you if you drive to work you will notice the wind.

if you drive across bridges it will be that much worse. let's go out to the east shore freeway. it does look good. it's windy. the visibility is good. i don't think there is anything that will make it hard for you to see but it will be hard for you to drive. especially if you drive a certain type of vehicle. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza the traffic is looking good. if you want to take bart, bart has informed us they are starting off the morning pretty well. and no problems on the other public transportation systems. it's nice and early in san jose. 4:38 let's go to seve. sal, thank you. some of the current gusts actually about 25-45. there was one gust about 2:00 a.m. daly city and damage there and along ocean beach early about 75. things are around 40-50 for some on the coast. some of the higher elevations at 20-30. it will be a very blustery day. had a system drop down last night and brought us some rain.

there it goes. we talked about this system last week. this is a wind producer. 40s and 50s. there will be very strange temps today. and i'll show you in a second. most of the wind will be out of the northwest and then it will turn north. a little bit more of a westerly breeze. livermore and san jose really kicking up. 28 in tahoe. much colder air mass comes in. today will be that transition day. as the low moves out again there goes that rain. it will be out of here fast. a lot of sunshine. pattern change. after today's win everything looks sunny and warmer. 25 occasionally gusts 60-65. a few locations. clouds will move out. sunny and windy. chilly in the morning for some. mild to warm later on. i put strange temps in there because santa rosa and this pattern can really warm up. other locations will be in the 60s. tomorrow will be warmer. mid 80s by wednesday.

good morning. we have gusts generally 25-50. officials in north carolina say two children trapped under dirt at a construction site at a home are not expected to be found alive. crews have been working throughout the night trying to bring the seven-year-old boy and six-year-old girl to safety. the two have been trapped since late yesterday afternoon after dirt somehow fell on to the children. developing news. zach is south korea -- south korea is backing off a statement that north korea is backing off nuke testing. he now says there are no

unusual signs of a nuclear test right now. the south clarifies the official meant north korea has been continuously preparing and waiting for political decision to begin a fourth nuke test. and they would withdraw workers at a factory that is joint with the south. how should the u.s. react to this? a national security officer will be talking about intentions at a town hall tonight in san francisco. dr. gloria duffy is a pentagon official. we are following new developments in afghanistan. a roadside bomb has killed nine people and wounded 22 others. afghan officials say the bomb hit a public bus. the past few days have been especially violent afghanistan. on saturday 20 people were killed in a nato air strike. the air strike came on the same day six americans died in an

attack on a military convoy in another part of afghanistan. 25-year-old diplomat ann was among those killed on saturday. she died in a suicide bombing attack while delivering books to school children. she is believed to be the first diplomat killed since last septembers attack. the president of rutgers university is getting ready to face tough questioning today. he will be holding a top hall meet -- town hall meeting. showing mike rice hitting, kicking, and taunting players. they will address plans to reorganize the state's higher education system. but many plan to focus their questions on the basketball scandal. some are calling for the president's resignation after he decided to put rice on suspension rather than firing him. the bipartisan gang of eight senators are expected to release their proposed legislation sometime this week.

reportedly it will include a pass to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people living in the u.s. illegally. it will layout guidelines to plans for securing the border. the trial that began baby food and lead will get under way in san francisco. the judge will decide if the largest baby food makers should put warning labels on foods and juices that contain low amounts of lead it claims many companies are selling products that contain lead levels that require warnings under california's proposition 65. time now 4:47. no question the weather conditions today are definitely windy. let's go to sal to see how that is effecting traffic. >> it's going to be effecting your drive across bay area bridges as we have been telling you all morning long. especially across -- i was going to say especially across the bay bridge but along all

the bridges. look for all the bridges to have a warning for drivers. the looking at the san mateo bridge now, the traffic is going to be okay. that bright light that they have it will up there along with some of the mist here is kind of creating kind of an effect. the bright sign says windy on the bridge. but it's kind of blurred out. let's take a look at the dumbarton bridge traffic. that is moving ale. again it will be windy on that span. again that is the story of the day. >> it looked like ufo. >> kind of neat. >> yeah. yesterday very, very blustery conditions. wind advisories are out. now very early this morning we had gusts 60-75 miles an hour. right now it's generally between 25 and about 45. but occasionally you can get gusts to 50 at sfo. so it doesn't take much. it will be a very blustery

windy day. wind advisory for the entire bay area. i'm not going to pinpoint everything. also an upper level low. i can see it spinning. talked about this last week. it went in the sierra nevada and gave us a little bit of snow. 40s and 50s on the temps. if it wasn't for the breeze it would be much colder. it's not that strong rain wise but it's still good. 45 ukiah. 50s and 60s again holding things up. eureka is 42 degrees. it will be sunny today but no doubt about it pattern change we're going to go from light rain and clouds to sunny and windy today. but then we'll go to sunny and warmer starting tomorrow into wednesday and thursday. chilly and mild on the lows. some will be in the 70s. some will be in the 60s.

a down slope helps. other locations will be all over the place. tomorrow everyone warms up. probably thursday into friday as well. i think it will start to cool down a little bit. a warmup on the way after today. >> thank you, steve. the cal woman's basketball team is flying back to the the bay area this morning after a very tough loss. the bears blew a ten-point second half lead. last night's loss brought cal's magical season to an end. the bears made it to the final four for the first time in the school's history. >> it's fabulous they got this far for the first time in school history. nobody thought they could do it. it's been really rewarding as a fan. >> louisville will now face connecticut for the national championship and that is scheduled for tomorrow night.

today wood side elementary school will honor a father and daughter killed by a speeding driver a year ago. the dedication of a bench remembering heydeys nuri. it's where a teenage driver hit and killed solaiman nuri and his nine-year-old daughter that were riding bikes. >> my date starts with seeing them and ending with seeing them. >> the driver david rosen pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter. he was sentenced to more than seven years in a juvenile facility but will be released when he turns 21. a new lawsuit claims a san francisco school district is partially responsible for a fire that severely damaged several western edition buildings. the lawsuit blames sparks from renovations at a charter school and barbecues at a nearby building for the 2011 fire on

pierce street. a total of four buildings sustained more than $8 million in damage. property owners on folden gate avenue and elm street are named in the lawsuit. two teenagers went hiking and got stranded until rescuers found them several days later. one of the teens is talking about his experience. nicholas sandoya and his friend kindle jack got lost while hiking. sandoya was able to call 911 before their cell phone died. he says he doesn't remember how they were separated. >> i can't tell you. now they told me i suffered a trauma i guess maybe i fell. maybe we both fell and we split ways. or i fell and she thought i was dead. >> sandy yeah was found on wednesday night. his friend jack was found the next day. both are treated for nonlife threatening injuries.

the scheduled arrival time is 2:45 this afternoon. the actual time the plane lands may vary depending on the weather. the airport division of the san francisco fire department will also perform a water cannon salute to celebrate the occasion. time is 4:54. we've been talking about the winds all morning long. and now sal you are talking about a tree down in san jose. >> that is right. it just has been reported. blocking all the freeway lanes. southbound 101 at telly road. the chp is out there to check it. northbound 101 may be slowing past the scene. so they are on their way. we'll let you know what is going on. there is trees down in many areas. highway 84 down in 45. there is a tree down on the treasure island off ramp. give yourself plenty of time. it will be a windy day. a lot of trees are coming down. you might want to consider taking public transportation. let's take a look at what we

have at the bay bridge traffic is moderate getting into the city. on the span it will be windy and the traffic looks good. you can see the flag at the bottom of the picture there. the giants flag just to show you how it's windy it's kind of gusting there. let's bring steve in. >> very windy. wind advisory out through the day. strongest gust seems to be very early this morning along 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.. with gusts from ocean city to daly city. probably a stretch on that 75. winds will relax a little bit. low pressure to the east. this is a really cold air mass.

winds are holding things up. there are reports of 30s up in mendocino county with windchill at 28. i think it was 28. 40s and 50s here on the temps. everybody will be held in the same ballpark. our observer dana says it's not that windy. livermore is only 9 miles an hour. that can change rapidly. 30 in tahoe. 37 in reno. 50s and 60s down to southern california. there goes our system but it will move out really, really fast. we'll have more coming up on mornings on 2. coming up in our 5:00 hour new mission for our new secretary of state. also we've been talking about it all morning a very windy monday morning in the bay area. we'll continue our live team coverage.
