>> thank you, sal. we are following developing news this morning in lake county where hundreds of people have been forced from their homes. we first told you about this story last night at 10:00. take a look at the pictures. a large wild fire burning in lake county. according to the last update that fire has burned 3,000 acres and it is zero percent contained. burning near the intersections of highway 20 and 53 it's forced the evacuation of 400 people from nearby spring valley. the hot temperatures, dry grass, and humidity is making it tough to fight. >> having those conditions causes the fire to spot more so the fire can jump ahead and in advance of itself. and it plays quite a toll on firefighter safety and fatigue. >> there is another fire burning nearby on highway 20 near walker ridge road. so far it has burned 2,000 acres. we do have a reporter on the way to the scene. we will bring you a live update from the fire lines in just a

bit. happening today people living in rural parts of the state will start to see a new fire fighting fee in their mailboxes. the new fee will help cover the cost of preventing and fighting fires in those rural areas. the bills run about $150 or more. they are being sent out alphabetically by county. alameda county will be the first to see the bills. nearly one million people are expected to be impacted by this new fee. we are tracking overnight news out of oakland where firefighters are investigating the cause of a house fire. that happened just before midnight on 98th avenue. people say they were awakened by the smell of smoke. >> flames started coming underneath the deck at the back of the house. i just got everybody out. >> she said everybody got out. fortunately no one was hurt. investigators could get their first look at chevron's

badly damaged crude unit today if it's safe enough to enter. the u.s. chemical safety board says its experts will be in richmond today to enter the number four crude unit. it was damaged by the fire last monday. two hours after chevron said its workers discovered a leaking pipe. federal investigators say they plan to conduct independent tests of that section of pipe to figure out why it failed. meantime chevron help center will be back open at 9:00 this morning for people that want to file a claim. it's located at the nevin community center. weekday hours from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the center is also open an saturdays 8:00 a.m. to noon. analysts blame the chevron fire along with two other factors for the spike in gas prices. we'll take a look at just how much gas prices have gone up in the bay area and how long they are expected to last. starting today amtrak is

making cuts to services in and out of oakland. the capitol corridor route will be cut by two trains during the week. first is the jack london square at 4:30 in the morning. the next one is the night departure out of sacramento to oakland. it's the first service cut to this route in the rail service 20 year history. rising fuel costs and cuts to funding are to blame. new this morning bart demonstrators say they plan to protest during the evening commute. they hold protest every monday in response. today the protests are scheduled to get under way at 5:00 this evening. 4:43 is the time right now. parts of columbus avenue will be more difficult than usual to get around. san francisco muni is locating

ewe utility lines starting today. power lines will be moved. construction work is scheduled to take place monday through friday between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30:00 p.m. for the next four months. it is part of the central subway project. also new this morning google plans to cut about 4,000 jobs at its motor row la -- motorola mobility center. police say one man was pronounced dead after taken to the hospital. the other suffered a leg wound but is expected to survive. now there is word the men were hit by gunfire after people in two cars started shooting at each other. no arrests have been made. oakland police are also investigating a shooting in broad daylight that critically

injured one driver. police say they got a 911 call at 12:38 yesterday afternoon at a shooting at 12th and mandela parkway. the driver of a honda accord was heading east when his car was hit by gunfire. >> just rapid shots. about 14 all at once. and then lots of cars just driving down to where i guess it happened. >> another man was also injured but is expected to survive. we have developing news overseas this morning. the death toll from two devastating earthquakes in iran is at more than 300. it comes a day after rescuers called off the search for survivors. more than 3,000 people were injured when a magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 earthquakes hit saturday near iran's border with armenia. iran is prone to earthquakes. magnitude 6.6 quake killed 26,000 people in 2003. in election news this

morning, mitt romney and his new running mate congressman paul ryan will be campaigning separately today. romney will head up a bus tour in florida and ohio while ryan is scheduled to travel to iowa. they have been making joint appearances since romney announced ryan. president obama is leaving his hometown of chicago to campaign in iowa for the next three days. the first event is in council bluffs. president attended five fundraisers yesterday. he hopes to raise up to $4 million for his reelection campaign. developing news out of lake county now. our top story this morning wild fire burning thousands of acres forcing people out of their homes. that fire has burned 3,000 acres it's near the intersection of highway 20 and 53. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is up there this morning where cal fire is organizing the fire fighting

efforts. and we hear it's pretty tough up there. >> yeah tough conditions. i can tell you there is heavy smoke in the air and bits of ash coming down where we are. we are just east of clearlake. this is the intersection of highway 20 and highway 53. highway 20 there is shut down as firefighters work in this area and try to get a handle on these two major fires here. the one that is the major concern is the y fire. we'll show you video from last night. this is threatening hundreds of homes still this morning. 400 people remain evacuated mostly from the spring valley community. there has been evacuation center set up from nearby elks lodge. the fire broke out late yesterday afternoon and it grew very quickly because several spot fires jumped offer from that original fire and it grew in acreage very rapidly. so far at last check i checked in with the incident command center. they tell me the wild fire has burned 3,000 acres and one

structure has been destroyed. many more are threatened this morning. hundreds of firefighters have been called in here and they are all facing hot, dry conditions and very rough terrain. >> having those conditions causes the fire to spot more so the fire can jump ahead in advance of itself. and also plays quite a toll on firefighter safety and fatigue. >> reporter: meantime the walker fire is also burning nearby. so far it has charred 2,000 acres. but this fire is burning in a remote area off highway 170 and not threatening any homes. again i just checked in with a firefighter at the incident command center just up the road from where we are. both the walker and y fires remain at zero percent containment this morning. i'm told there was one injury to an inmate firefighter yesterday that suffered minor burns and had to be take ton the hospital and treated. again zero percent containment on these fires.

very well. let's go to steve. >> thank you. what we have going on there is fog on the coast. and then it will be very, very hot inland. also tropical clouds continuing to move through the sierra nevada producing rain shower there is. possibility of thunder and lightning. if you are heading in that direction, keep that in mind. as for lake county today it will start off very, very warm. 70 degrees. 94 and the high today 108 degrees. i mean it's just cooking up there. we'll have more updates throughout the morning. as you can see by the coast there is pretty good fog there. on the weekend we had 60s and 100 inland. antioch going 105 today. a lot of that tropical moisture continues to go along the spine of the sierra. 60s for temps today. santa rosa 51. the city is 52. high pressure is definitely in charge. it will be very, very hot

we have some fog on the coast but the weather today will be very much like we had in the weekend. if you're by the coast or around the bay 60s and 70s. >> thank you, steve. we are on the scene of developing news this morning. right frau a huge wild fire is burning in lake county forcing 400 people from their homes. that fire has forced the closure of highway 20 from highway 53 to e street. we have a crew center of the fire fighting efforts there. we'll continue to bring you updates and the latest information throughout the morning. parts of southern california have been dealing with severe weather for the past two days. tornado touched down in river side county. you can see there where strong winds snapped several wooden power poles. crews are working to clean up the damage this morning. evangelist billy graham is in the hospital being treated

for bronchitist. he was admitted over the weekend. this is his second hospital stay in less than a year. a pennsylvania woman is accused of killing her fiance on their wedding day. nicola was scheduled to marry billy brew store. they found him suffering from stab wounds. he died an hour late aerothe the hospital. >> she was really friendly. i didn't see him that much. >> franklin was arraigned on homicide charges over the weekend. she allegedly told the judge he did not kill her fiance on purpose. analysts blame the chevron fire along with two other major factors for a spike in gas prices. the latest lune burg survey shows it averages $3.69. $3.99 in california. in the bay area specifically

the average is $4.18 in san francisco. $4.10 in oakland and $4.11 in san jose. the price of crude oil and shortage of corn is contributing to the spike. corn is needed to make ethanol. time now 4:46. the study found children gained less weight in fifth through eighth grade if they lived in states with strong laws regulating the sale of junk food. children that were overweight or obese in fifth grade were more likely to reach a healthy weight eighth grade in states with the strongest laws. batman has finally fallen. at least the the box office. >> the bourne legacy pushed the dark knight rises off the top spot where it has been since it premiered three weeks ago.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we're on the scene of developing news in lake county. take a look at this. this is the fire that is burning right now in lake county near the intersection of highways 20 and 53. according to cal fires last update it has burned 3,000 acres and destroyed one building. right now highway 20 is closed from the intersection of highway 53 to e street in koa lieu is a county. we do have a reporter on the scene. we know there are hundreds of people that have been forced from their homes. we will have a live report coming up in ten minutes. in lieu moth county the chips fire has burned more than 30,000 acres. mandatory evacuations are under way there as well in areas of rush creek and seneca. that fire began on july 29th.

the cause is still under investigation. right now more than 600 buildings are threatened. the majority of them are homes. as of 9:30 last night the fire was only 12% contained. they hope to have it fully contained by the end of the month. dozens of people are back in their homes after a fire burning northeast of fresno forced evacuations there. 138-acre fire started saturday afternoon near the city of toll house. so far it has burned atolls 30% contained. firefighters say it was sparked by a discarded cigarette. chp is investigating a firey crash in san ramon that killed two people and seriously injured a third. three cars crashed on southbound interstate 680 at the crow canyon exit at 1:20 yesterday morning. one of the cars started leaking gasoline and caught fire. the cars crashed near construction zone but fortunately none of the construction workers were hurt.

bart says a man hit a train over -- hit by a train over the weekend at san francisco glen park station has died. it's not clear why he was on the tracks. the spokesman says the train operator was aware he hit something he stopped the train. it was shut down for two hours. the victim's name has not been released. a west oakland organization that helps women battling drug addiction could be evicted today. serenity house has not raised enough money to pay its overdue rent. the landlord says the group happen paid rent for a year and owes $30,000. efforts to rebuild a san bruno neighborhood leveled by a 2010 gas line explosion will resume this week. the construction comes after work had been halted on august 2nd when crews clipped a gas

everywhere inland. it will not be by the coast. 50s and 60s there. 90s to 100s away. it has been a long time since we've seen a pa turn like this. low 50s for system. mid 60s for a few even san jose is 61 degrees. tropical clouds continue to firen over the sierra, nevada. inland temps compared to sunday they will come up a little bit. about 2-6 degrees. by the coast it won't matter. it will be very cool over there. temperatures should start to come down wednesday through friday after that there is no agreement. so we'll see. this is a big old ridge of high pressure. when it wants to hang out, it does. by the coast there is no north to northeast wind. temperatures are cool. 64 in the city. 72 oakland. 101 concord. keep an eye on your car thermometer it should be all over the place. cooling trend wednesday, thursday, into friday. weekend tough call. there could be tropical clouds coming in there. >> thank you, steve. coming up on the 5:00 hour
