i did a survey, and counted 1-5 people are holding shopping bags, everybody is looking for a good deal and they started early. >> reporter: shoppers huddled together in front of h&m. they spent the night because the store was offering free gift cards. >> try to avoid shopping because i don't like the big crowds. but i feel like the awesome deals were too good to pass up. >> reporter: 100 people shuffled in when the store opened at 8:00 a.m. shoppers filled the plaza. >> little competitive. >> aggressive. yes. but we had fun. >> reporter: across the bay at west field san francisco center, there was plenty of foot traffic. >> we will have as much shopping as black fried. lot of people want to come out and take advantage of the

sales. >> reporter: sales ranging from 20-70% off were offered throughout the mall. retailers are trying to clear out their inventory. they know customers will be cashing in gift cards. this man specifically came in to buy a coat. >> after i got something for myself i decided to get something for my brother. we kept shopping and we are still going. >> reporter: retailers want to boost revenue before the end of the year so success depends on how much people spend today. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. today some folks are trying to take advantage of the gift cards. gift card exchange day. the cards are being sold to the highest bidder. the site claims resellers pay

the highest premiums on premiums on the day after christmas. shopping means replacing old electronics. how do you know if you are getting rid of them safely, coming up, how a company is making sure it ends up in the right place. >> fog delayed flights in and out of san francisco's airport. the delay lasted as long as 30 minutes. in san jose, fog caused one flight to divert to rene moch passengers -- reno. passengers landed in san jose two hours late. no delays in oakland. numbers show 952 arrests for dui this season. and two fatal collisions. alameda has 317 arrests reported between saturday and christmas eve. santa clara, 243 arrests.

sonoma 88. contra costa 77 arrests. the cold weather continues here in the bay area and tonight is going to be no exception. ktvu's robert handa is in san jose to us how a home was saved from a fire. >> reporter: many people are trying to escape the cold. first, more on that fire in san jose where one family has an interesting story to tell about how their home was saved. >> reporter: the san jose fire department helped board up this home tonight after putting out flames here last night. it was the latest in a rash of fires. >> damage to the inside of the chimney. when they hitlit it up the fire entered the walls of the house and got inside the attic. >> reporter: firefighters kept the fire from spreading. a man and a woman driving by

saw flames outside that couldn't be seen inside and called 911. >> you don't know where it is and how fast it can spread and they reacted and were not shy and helped this person they didn't know. the cold weather could be uncomfortable. >> i like it. but other times, when is it going to get warm. >> that's what many homeless are asking. and they are making a plea for those feeling ill to get to the cold weather shelters. >> please come in. i can't convey how cold it really gets. >> reporter: she is also making a public acknowledgment. >> i would like to thank this unknown couple for alerting me and saving my home and possibly saving my life. >> reporter: the fire

department's plea, get chimneys clean and inspected. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. >> investigators in st. louis public school -- in san leandro are investigating a house fire. firefighters got the flames out in minutes but they found a woman inside not breathing. she was pronounced dead that hospital and two dogs died inside the home. firefighters say the home didn't have working smoke detector. and this fire happened before midnight last night. residents heard the smoke alert and opened the door to find a wall of flames. the family was able to get out before firefighters arrive. the san jose woman who tossed her child from a second

story window yesterday is being held without bail tonight. lupita cortez has been booked on attempted murder and child abuse charges. police say she suffered extreme emotional dispress and underwent a evaluation today. her son suffered only bumps and bruises. the mother broke bones in both feet. lucky supermarket warned customers at some stores to check their bank account for suspicious activity. lucky supermarket urged customers to review their bank records if they shopped where crooks stole credit card information. two customers said even though they haven't noticed money missing their bank canceled their atm cards. >> i was contacted by bank of america and they told me my card was compromised. they verified the last 7

transactions. >> i went to bank of america to withdrawal and told my card was placed on hold. >> since the scam was discovered, lucky supermarket says it inspected its payment machines and posted signs outside stores telling customers about the situation. in a land mark lawsuit over a twitter account, a company is sueing a former employee staking a claim to his thousands of online followers. ktvu's alex savage is here with more. >> reporter: the question is who owns a twitter account. is it the individual employee or the company they work for? a writer is being sued because he left the company and he took his 17,000 twitter followers with him. >> the new name.

>> locked in a legal fight over his twitter followers he is being sued by his former employer. during his 5 years with the company, he started a twitter account. tweets were professional and personal. >> it's my account. we agreed it was my account. >> reporter: a few months after he left the company he was hit with a lawsuit. even though he changed his handle, they are still asking to be compensated for the thousands of followers he left with. the company used his twitter list as a customer list. >> it doesn't make sense. >> in their suit they have come up with a specific value for each individual twitter follower. $2.50. multiply that by 17,000 followers over 8 months and

bachmann and newt gingrich start bus tours tomorrow night. the man wanted for shooting a soldier at a home coming party surrended to police this afternoon. san bernardino police say ruben jurado shot christopher sullivan friday night. police say he opened fire when he tried to break opfight at his party. he had just returned home from fort campbell kentucky. he is now in critical condition at a hospital. >> there is speculation apple is gearing up to release the ipad 3. this march jobs promoted the launch of the ipad 2. they are reporting suppliers are working to try to get the

>> nonprofits and restaurants are exempt from the rule. environmental groups say half a dozen other cities have also passed plastic bag bans. san francisco led the way back in 2007. since then santa clara, sunnyvale, marine county and fairfax have approved plastic bag bans. st. anthonys reached a milestone. volunteers served the last christmas meal in the current dining hall. they have been operating out of a auto repair shop for 16 years. they are building a new facility and needs help raising money. they estimate they serve a million meal as year and hopes to have the new facility
