people this morning at a parking lot. the two were taken to the hospital. while those officers were on the job, others were at home sick. san jose is seeing a surge in the number of officers calling in kick. ktvu's maureen naylor has more. >> san jose police chief says 15-100 officers called in sick. they said they were stretched while investigating the homicide of two students and a officer involved shooting. >> that was a lesson we learned. make sure we have coverage. >> this year the san jose police department took more than run hundred 32,000 sick hours, up 40% from last year. they spiked in february after

department impacted by budget cuts is doing something it hasn't done in months. >> it's big. start my dream job. been a long path in the making. >> oakland police started training 10 new recruits. 25 officers will be added to the force thanks to a federal grant. at 5:30, the special mission they will carry out. members of "occupy oakland" this afternoon blocked the entrance to a burker king restaurant. they stat at the front doors discouraging customers from innerring. they said the company doesn't give back to low income communities. a half hour later the demonstration ended. the port of oakland hopes it will prevent another occupy block ade next monday. yesterday officials called the shut down a bad idea. saying it would hurt workers.

a poll suggests many voters had a change of heart. >> the public seems to want to put the brakes on california's high speed rail system. according to a poll 64% of voters would like a revote. if that happens the poll found a majority of californians would reject it 59-39%. >> if there were a revote the chances of passing aren't good. the original estimate was $43 million. but now that estimate ballooned to $90 billion. he opposes the project and he is pleases to see voters coming around. >> the more they have learned, more concern they have become, they have drawn conclusions this is a huge --

san francisco police tell channel 2 the bomb squad is wrapping up an investigation of a suspicious package in hunters point. that was reported at 1:45 this afternoon near evans and keith street. they sent a robot to pick up the package. it's unclear what if anything was found inside. >> one of the most famous candy companies in the bay area and now red vine is expecting a strike. after years of loyalty they are being treated poorly. >> the picket lines went up outside the company in union city this morning.

violent crimes in oakland. including a shooting spree last week that injured a one-year- old boy. they will have a special mission, protect school children in the most dangerous neighborhoods. >> i want to thank you for your dedication, your support, your patience. you chose to stay here and we are thankful you did that because we need your help. >> reporter: he welcomed 10 trainees. these recruits planned to become officers last year before the city began layoffs. now thanks to a new $10 million federal grant they will complete their training and hit the straits. one recruit hopes to diffuse tensions between police and the community. >> i thought i could make a difference, change that. make people think -- you know, the police in the city are good people. and they will start their oak in the most violent areas.

25 new officers will be assigned to the 100 blocks where 90% of the crime occurs. part of the officer's jobs will get to know the children and make sure they get to school safely. one said even though they are being sent to high crime areas they will find plenty of support in the community. >> the number of crimmals you come in contact with is a small fraction of the number of good people. >> in addition to the 10 trainees the grant will be used to hire 15 new officers. four are former officers. that leaves 11 people to be hired. so far there are 60 applicants. no word if any change in the condition of hiram lawrence who was shot in the head one week ago in oakland. we was among 7 people hit with

music. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. as we showed you live, there is a party going on at stanford for the women's soccer team that just won the national championship. the team arrived back to campus to a cheering crowd and they are holding their national championship trophy so everyone can see it. they beat duke universities in georgia yesterday. it's their first national championship for women's soccer. >> we have been working a long time for this. >> they scored on a header in the 53 minute to clinch the win. over the last four years their record is 95-4-4 and they made it to the finals the past three years in a row but this is the first time they won. the city counsel is set to vote on a sport's complex.

. san francisco police are investigating an accident involving a speeding car that crashed outside a neighborhood bar. happened after 9:00 last night at hi-tide lounge. police say the car clipped another car and slammed into a pillar. the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. in ohio authorities plan on filing murder chargers against

a man charged with luring three people to their deaths with a posting on craigslist. prosecutors say richard beasley is suspected of killing them. he is jailed on unrelated charges. today prosecutors all agreed to let the district attorney prosecute the case. a 16-year-old boy is facing charges in the case as well for helping him. facebook is bringing on the team to help bolster its operations. they allow users to share information through a smartphone app and website. they announced today their move to facebook on their blog. they plan to wind down services next month. facebook did not acquire the

. in san francisco tonight a balt that has one of the best known hotels on one side and one of the best known museums on the other side. david stevenson tells us what they are fighting over. >> reporter: san francisco fire station number one behind me is set to be demolished to add a new wing to the museum but the hotel says the construction is going to make life on the street ugly for everyone. 10. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a study finds colleges and universities that don't ask about race have high percentages of asian-american students. the california institute of technology is about 1/3 asian. university of california at berkeley, which is forbidden to consider race is more than 40% asian. that's up from 20% before the law was passed. researchers say many asian- americans don't list their ethnicity due to fear of discrimination. high school student won a $100,000 science scholarship. angela zhang was awarded the honor for her research on cancer cells. the winners were announced this morning in washington. she was competing against 5 other students for the scholarship. congratulations. time to get more details on

the head of the federal aviation administration is on leave after a arrest for drunken driving. officers pulled him over saturday in virginia for driving down the wrong side of the street. police say he cooperated and was released. the department of transportation says he requested the leave. three years since a commuter plane crashed in new york, raised awareness about pilot fatigue. 50 people died when the plane went down. after the crash members of congress and the victim's families demandded air safety improvements that include said better training and most rest for pilots. >> the fact is nothing has
