snow hit bay area mountain tops. we'll show you where and tell you if more is on the way. and fallout from the storm continues where about a thousand families without power may have to wait longer to get it back. a winter storm sweeps through these their as and we'll let you know what drivers need to know if they're headed this direction.

good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> hello again, everyone. i'm heather holmes. today we are seeing the fallout from the powerful storm that hit the bay area this weekend. here's what it looks like on mt. hamilton after 2:00 this afternoon. the mountain of shrouded in clouds most of the day. when they cleared, you could see snow. >> for a look at rain totals from the storm we had, let's head to the channel 2 weather center. >> most areas as far as rain totals picked up a quarter of an inch to an inch. that mostly happened yesterday. today a bit of everything. sun, breaks in the clouds, also lingering rain showerings. here rego with the coverage. not a lot to show with the bay area. but right around lake tahoe,

truckie, how the towards blue canyon, that is snow. the winter storm warnings still in place until tomorrow morning. i'll back the view out here. not a lot, maybe a few showers moving in to parts of sonoma county. i am expecting some of this to be approaching the bay area at least in the short-term with more moisture out there. we have to bring in stimthe possibility of a few showers at least over the next two to four hours. satellite radar shows you this. you can see the activity. right now looks like closed in on mendacino. here's the forecast you can't see. not much to show you at 5:00. and also just up to our north. go ahead and put this into motion of the next few hour. as you can't see, a few light showers across the line. at least until now to 10:00 we

could be talking about few light showers. for your monday forecast, still shower chances in that. we'll look at that forecast coming up in a bit. utility crews have tried to restore power to the hardest hit mountains. the weekend storms caused serious problems there including sending a tree into a house. >> reporter: property damage and outages are the biggest problems right now. i just spoke to a pg&e rep who said the damage is worse than expected. there are 330 families that have been without power since last night. now they'll have to wait until at least 8:00 tonight. wild wind, lightning, and thunderstorms nothinged out power and knocked down trees toppling some into homes. through the roof of this home

on buckeye drive. >> i heard this tree coming down. you could hear it. it was like an explosion of a transformer. >> reporter: this winter storm hit the santa cruz mountains hard. >> we don't have any power and probably won't until 9:30 tonight at the earliest. >> reporter: shawn has lived without power since 7:00 last night after a redwood toppled into power lines requiring crews to install a new utility pole this afternoon. >> we heard the crackle and that means everybody get ready for cover. we don't know if it's going to hit our house or the ground. >> reporter: 834 families along highway 9 are also without power. after trees knocked power lines on to the road last night forcing road blocks. >> i've never seen so much debris. big storms, but not so much debris and damage. i knew it was unusual that came

through here. >> reporter: he says he's never seen this kind of direction. yet he says he feels lucky, blessed, that no one was hurt. we also want to give an update to the 149pg&e customers in south felton, the power should be restored by 8:00 tonight but manage the expectations and expect it around 10:00 or later. ktvu channel 2 news. >> we talked about the snow on some bay area mountain tops. that's nothing compared to the accumulations in the sierra. to see how drivers are coping up there. we're joined live from blue canyon. >> reporter: we're on highway 80 near niac. up until 15 minute ago, the snow was falling for hours straight before we got here. over that snow mound that you

can probably barely see, that's where you'll find a chain installation check point. chains are a necessity. if you're driving to the sierras, 3-5 feet of snow have been measured since friday evening and there is still more to come. a weekend winter storm swept through the sierra. in the town of dutch flat, there was enough of the white stuff to throw snowballs. >> it's lower levels. that's what's causing people the surprise. it's more of january snow levels. >> reporter: this portion of highway 80 became a partial parking lot. vehicles weren't allowed past this point without chain. >> apply emergency brake, drape chains up and over tires. >> reporter: these students were trying to get back to school in reno.

updates anytime, log on to our website ktvu.com. all lanes of eastbound highway 237 in san jose are open tonight following a long closure after a tanker truck carrying liquid nitrogen toppled over. it was uprighted and all lanes were reopened just after 3:00 this morning. the lanes have been blocked for about eight hours west of north first street. the driver was initially trapped in the truck. they were injured. no elect nitrogen was spilled. the cost cause of the crash is under investigation. controversial airport screening procedures will be adapted as quote, conditions warrant. the newly invasive procedures are drawing fire as the holiday ravel season begin -- travel season begins.

reporter shelby lynn has the story. >> you have important options we want you to be aware of. >> reporter: as more concerns are raised at the screening procedures. the tsa is trying to educate the public about the rules. >> if we are to detect terrorists who have proven innovative and creative in their design and implementation of bombs that are going to blow up airplanes and kill people, then we have to do something that prevents that. >> reporter: government officials say incidents such as the would be bomber that packed explosives in his underwear to try and blow up a plane last christmas have prompted the measures. critics have taken aim at the pat downs and full body screeners. with the new rules taking effect just in time for the busy holiday season.

our republican governor is questioning why the obama administration didn't give more of a warning. 16 airports have contracted out their security screening to private companies. they still have to comply with the same standards as the federal counterparts. >> secretary of state hillary clinton is defending those controversial full body scans and pat downs. clinton says most travelers are law-abiding citizens but the measures are still necessary because of threats posed by terrorists. >> let's not kid ourselves, the terrorists are adaptable. they start doing whatever they can to try to cause harm. when you have people who are willing to die in order to kill americans and others, you've got folks putting explosives in their underwear. who would have thought that? >> she also says the government should look for a way to limit people who is going to be put

through the strict security measures. those who say the scanners and the pat downs are too invasive, are scheduling an opt out day for this wednesday. those calling for the day of protest are urging travelers to refuse the body scans. thereby forcing screeners to do the more time-consumes inspections. some organizers say this wednesday was chosen because many people only fly during the holidays and it may highlight the problem for those who aren't aware of the whole extent. >> i don't want people to be inconvenienced but mainly i don't want them to be i radiated and sexually assaulted by tsa agents. >> a survey says most americans support the body scanner. 15% are opposed. the poll was conducted by cbs news.

an annual study finds that oakland is the fifth most dangerous city in the country. the rankings place st. louis, missouri as the most dangerous city based on their violent crimes. new jersey was second, flint, michigan, then oakland. based on crime numbers. some criminologists question the methodology of the rankings. for those looking to gas up on the holiday week, look for higher price. the price is now $2.87. here in california, those buying gas in san fransisco paid the most at $3.20 a gallon. police are asking for the public's help in trying to find a man who sexually assaulted a young girl in her own bedroom. also ahead: berkeley is about to make a change in how

berkeley police are asking for the public's help tonight in finding a man who sexually assaulted a young girl at her home in her bedroom. identified the suspect as omar sosa. they say he entered he house on evelyn street around 6:00 a.m. yesterday morning through an unlocked window. detectives believe sosa may be heading south in an attempt to flee to mexico. he's known to be driving a ranger double cab with a white camper shell. anyone with information about sosa, contact berkeley police. the city of oakland will begin accepting applications to operate pot farms within city

limits. they will go to marijuana growing operations that would supply medical marijuana retailers. growers have to implement environmental situations, and report earnings. there is no word yet on how federal drug enforcement officials will respond if the city approved operations actually start growing pot. in washington, congress has a full plate of legislation to deal with during the rest of this lame duck session besides voting on bills about tax cuts and unemployment. congress may take action on the military's don't ask, don't tell policy by the end of the year. >> reporter: with little time left on the clock, congress needs to pass a budget or a bill to fund the government temporarily, make decisions on medicare reimbursements to doctors and whether to extend bush era tax cuts before they

expire december 31. republican leaders say the obama administration should focus on creating jobs. >> instead of giving americans what they want, democratic leaders plan to use the last few days that lawmakers expect to spend in washington this year focusing on everything except preventing this tax hike which will cost us more jobs. >> reporter: so will the lame duck session be productive or will it be lame? the obama administration is hoping lawmakers have more time to tackle top issues like a missile defense in europe. >> we're working with our democratic and republican senators to try to get to a point where we could hold that vote this year. >> reporter: then there's the topic of repealing the don't ask don't tell policy. would rather see the congress address it than be in the court. >> at some time the court could change this law and not give us the right amount of time to

implement it. >> reporter: all these tests become more daunting when you know they left for a thankings giving back. it turns out the recession is having a positive effect on the environment. according to a u.s. energy department report, carbon dioxide dropped for the first time in a decade. there's a link between gross domestic product and pollution. dropped 1.3% from 2008 to 2009. also due to factories shutting down and people driving and flying less. the delayed trial for three uc berkeley students charged with spying in iran is set for next year. it was delayed because sarah

in news of the world tonight: in israel a protest outside benjamin netanyahu's officer in jerusalem. thest has been pushing israel to impose a new building moratorium to draw them back to though negotiating table. in response netanyahu says he will talk to the cabinet only after the u.s. lay os it details in writing. an active volcano sent people running. forced scores of villagers to evacuate their homes. many people have no returned home. this was the sixth ash

explosion in recent weeks. officials say there is no danger of an imminent eruption. in china a man stuck inside a pipe for 80 hours is finally free. it happened at a construction platform. the man was stuck almost 60 feet below the ocean. he was working at the bottom of the pipe when the tidal pressure crushed the pipe trapped him inside. it was 3 feet in diameter. he was not seriously injured. tension is again rising over north korea's nuclear program. stanford professor sigfid is concerned about reports there. >> reporter: toured the complex earlier this month. in a report online, the former director of the nuclear lab

writes north korea has two completed centrifuges in a facility suitable for making bombs. he described his first glimpse of the vast and secretive plant as stunning. he was told the centrifuges were installed and running. he was not allowed to take photos but satellite images show evidence of construction in that area over the last few years. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff refusing to detail how much the u.s. really knows. >> but i would say that this is something we been concerned about for a significant period of time. and also penetration of the north koreans in terms of intelligence capabilities is very difficult. >> the fact that north korea showed a visiting american scientist the new enriched uranium appears to be a calculated move by the north korean government and now a new

challenge for the obama administration. >> i don't think anybody in the obama administration should be surprised at this. if they are, i think it indicates they've never understood how serious the north korean threat is. >> reporter: a senior u.s. official tells fox it's try this is a provocative act by the government. possibly time to trenten the communist nation as it moves to transfer power to the son of dictator jim jong il. ireland is now admitting it needs help. some people in ireland say it's a humiliating turnaround finish the government only after saying such help is necessary. >> i understand the level of concern out there. i think the communications of last week was very poor. people feel misled as a consequence. but certainly we need to get around this issue.

have volunteers wearing red that will empty your car for you. overall we're seeing a 5% increase of food coming in and a 10% of families coming in. >> reporter: recipients say the food and clothing is a life line. >> they here to help. that's a good thing. there's hungry people out here. i see it. shouldn't nobody go hungry. >> reporter: across the bay, the spirit of mother wright is alive and well. she died in 2009. now motorcycle clubs are collecting turkeys, handing them out, and feeding anyone in need. >> one thing at the motorcycle club, or bikes make noise. we do all we can to help the community. >> reporter: three of mother wright's daughters have been key to maintaining the spirit of giving. monica wright says her mother would be proud of those who carry on in her name.

learn parking -- long-term parking spaces. also an airport shuttle. they will expand next sunday to carry the same passengers home again. an airline made an emergency landing today at jfk. balances and fire stood ready. it was heading from jfk to moscow. late this afternoon when part of the plane reportedly caught fire. possibly the plane's wing. the plane had more than 200 people aboard. neither delta airlines or the faa released any information about the incident. retailers across the country are gearing up for the most important time of year. it appears they're pulling out the stops trying to get people into the stores and stay in those stores longer. heather has more from new york. >> reporter: unemployment numbers still linger around 9%. and for most americans, the recession is far from over. but the national retail federation says there's a

take a look at this. some roads are looking for like skating rinks in minnesota. freezing rain and ice covered roads that led to more than 370 crashes. that's last night alone. mostly near the minneapolis-st. paul area. at least one person died on an ice covered road. more than 50 of the accidents involved injuries. even snowplows and salt trucks are having difficulty staying on the roads there. >> that's no fun at all. we have a bit of that around here. let's see what's happening with mark. >> we could have icy roads when they drop off in the snow levels once again. up above 3000 feet. but the bulk of the showers out of the bay area. on live storm tracker 2, it looks like north of the

sacramento area just to the south of chico and also still showing the snow showers around lake tahoe. i'll move the maps around. most of the concentrated activity up towards the coast. rain in eureka. as we move the maps to the south, some showers to the memacino county. winds from 20-30 miles an hour. a few showers developing this evening in the short-term. and then for tomorrow still scattered showers out there. a chance the extended forecast -- going to pull back on the rain clouds. temperatures really cooling off. we could be talking about temperatures below 32 degrees. in fact in the upper 20s is the coldest of the bay area. we'll see that in the five-day forecast. first thing tomorrow morning mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures in the upper 30s in santa rosa. san fransisco 46.

fremont 43. and san jose around 41 degrees. this was the system yesterday that generated the intense rain showers, the thunderstorms. right now as you can see there's that circulation moving into nevada. the rain showers we just showed you up to the north, that will be the source of a chance of a few showers for tonight over he next few hours. as we move into monday and tuesday, some activity to the north will be approaching the region. we'll call it a little bit unsettled. a few showers. the best bet of picking up the heaviest showers, that'll be tuesday morning. but still over the next few days off and on for monday and tuesday, we have to keep the chance of a scattered shower in the forecast. beyond that point, the weather pattern changes dramatically for the dry weather pattern. sets up shop out in the pacific with that north flow in place. that will help transport the cool air. we could easily have frost advisories or freeze warnings

kick in for wednesday and thursday and possibly friday mornings. plenty of sunshine with no rain clouds until next weekend. as far as storm totals in the mountains, very impressive. just compiled a few of these. these are the totals since last friday. you can see the amounts with kirkwood around 60 to 66 inches. the sierra, additional snow around 5-10 inches. here's our forecast model tonight. actually showing you a few scattered showers out there. then tomorrow morning the chance the bulk of the activity just off shore could have a bit of action in the south bay. you can see we're not covered completely but still the possibility of a few showers increasing monday night and into tuesday especially in the motion. tomorrow temperatures only in the 50s. santa cruz 56 degrees.

here's a look ahead. your five day forecast. for the morning hours scaling back the probability during the day tuesday. wednesday and thursday very cold mornings. coolest locations in the upper 20s. then looks like we could be talking about rain chances by saturday. last weekend we were talking about 84 degrees now we're talking about upper 20s over the next few days. >> what a turnaround. thanks. it's transition time in the hall of congress. with outgoing representatives leaving and new ones in, the halls are something of a mess. >> reporter: this weekend the halls of congress looked like a dump because they pretty much are. before the new congress can get to work, the old congress needs to move out. this generates a lot of trash. so-called office resupply locations, a fancy name for old binders and papers appear in

the hallways. it's all free for the taking if you have a job in congress or if you're just starting out here. we caught up with retiring congressman patrick kennedy who is packing up a chapter in american politics that dates back to 1946. that's when john f. kennedy won the house seat of massachusetts. each year since then, at least one member of the kennedy family has been in the white house or congress. >> i've had months to pack this stuff up, label it and get it ready. in fact, i've already had a moving truck move most of it out. that was prior to the election. because i already knew i was leaving. >> reporter: of course a lot of members not choosing to move out but getting deseated, some of the mess gets recycled and the rest hill staffers have the job of coding everything in
