i'm ken wane. >> lori nailer in tonight for heather holmes. a bay areavictim was the victim -- 7-year-old girl was severely injured yesterday in oakland when a pitbull terrier bit her face at a home on 82nd avenue. the dog was taken away by animal control. while the girl survives the event, several pitbulls attacked and killed a 2-year- old boy just days earlier. animal control shares what's more behind the nature of the controversial breed. >> we're having some problems with the story. we'll get to that a little later on. meantime, fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of an apartment fire in san jose that left a child dead and half a dozen families homeless. ktvu's paul chambers is in san jose with the latest there. paul? >> reporter: ken, the loss of life of an 8-year-old child is affecting her family members and the people living in the apartment complex nearby and the fire crew who worked to save her life this morning, but were unsuccessful. we're told the young girl is from durham, north carolina. she was just visiting family members and attended a baptism just yesterday. >> just don't want to see that happen to any child, you know. it's just unfortunate, you know, something like that happened here. >> reporter: the door and windows of the apartment are now boarded up. but for more than 12 hours, fire officials and police officers have been searching for clues and evidence to see what caused this deadly fire.

at 1:42 this morning, san jose fire department received the 911 call of an apartment fully engulfed in flames. >> i heard the smoke detector went off. so i came out, running. >> saw the flames come out, just shooting out. i heard a popping noise, sounded like gunshots. so we just got out real quick. >> reporter: and i went back inside and i knocked on my doors, my doctor's door, and i told her, you grab whatever you can and come out. there's fire outside! >> reporter: according to fire officials, while en route to the building, they were notified a little girl was trapped inside. crews were on the scene within 6 minutes of the call and roughly 4 minutes later, they were making their way inside the apartment to find the 8- year-old girl. >> it's a very small apartment. they went to the bedroom and they found a little girl there. she was by herself in the room on the floor. >> one of the firefighters brought her out, tried to perform cpr on her, but unsuccessful. >> reporter: there were seven people inside the one-bedroom apartment when the fire

started. five children and two adults. everyone made it out safely except for 8-year-old gomez mercedes, pronounced dead at an area hospital. nine others were treated for minor injuries. in all, six units were evacuated, leaving 25 people without a place to stay. still, people living in the complex say they are like one big family and losing the little girl is something they will never forget. >> it's sad seeing that. my condolences to the family. >> hope and pray the best for their family that lost that child. my thoughts and prayers are for them. >> reporter: now, a little while ago, neighbors brought flowers and signed cards for the family. as of right now, the fire is still under investigation and no word yet on what caused it. now, fire officials tell us one of the responding units this morning fire is from a nearby fire house slated to be closed in san jose next month. live in san jose, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2news.

>> a second trial for a bay area man accused of stabbing his wife to death four years ago is finally moving forward. tomorrow, san mateo county superior court judge will begin reviewing more than 30 motions in the retrial of quincy norton, sr. in 2008, a jury found norton guilty of first degree murder. but the judge in the case, the same judge in the retrial, found norton's attorney had failed to provide adequate representation. norton says he was at another home's -- woman's home the day his wife was away. san francisco police are still looking for the man who got into a gun fight with officers early yesterday morning. it happened about 5:30 a.m. when officers spotted a car near laguna and gary streets, which they suspect had been carjacked. they tried to pull it over, but the driver with the passenger inside took off, leading officers on a chase. the car crashed on arkansas street. police say that's when one of the suspects fired at officers, who fired back. no one was struck by the gunshots.

officers arrested one of the suspects and his name has not yet been released. the city of oakland plagued with violent crime and police layoff, finding a shortage of enthusiasm for national night out. right now the city is about 100 block parties of its goal of 450. national night out is an event held across the country. it's designed to get neighbors to get to know one another in order to make their communities safer. now, this year, the event will be held on august 3 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. registered parties are allowed to block off their neighborhood streets to make room for big crowds. the deadline to register is august 2. sunshine in parts of the bay area, but the fog is being especially stubborn in some bay area neighborhoods. ktvu meteorologist mark checks in with the latest. >> ken, the usual spots still dealing with areas of fog. a live look at the live storm tracker 2, just lost our image, but i'll go ahead and reset it. clouds, still a factor near parts of the immediate shoreline and also right around the bay this morning. in fact, here is the most

recent imagery. and there you can pick out the clouds hugging a good portion of the coastline. fairly close to san francisco, still a bit of a breeze out there with winds around 15 to 25 miles an hour. all this having a big impact on temperatures for today. as far as current numbers across the bay area, we'll show you those. san francisco right now checking in about 60. santa rosa, 72. concord, 76. fairfield, upper 70s. still have the southwesterly breeze in place and the fairfield area, right around 20 to 25 miles an hour. so cool weather pattern is here to stay for the next few days, in fact, for tuesday, wednesday and thursday. we could barely be making it up into the upper 70s to right around 80 degrees. we'll talk more about that and also your five-day forecast, coming up in a little bit. thank you, mark. much more to come on channel 2news at 5:00. word a change could be coming at the top of bp management, as fears ease in the gulf over tropical storm bonnie. california's lieutenant governor's reportedly in trouble with the irs and it's not the first time the tax man

price of gasoline has picked up slightly over the last few weeks. a new survey of gas stations released today shows the price of regular unleaded rose to $2.73 nationally, an increase of almost a penny. in the bay area, over the last month, prices rose about 2 to 3- cents a gallon. average price in oakland is $3.18. in san francisco, it's $3.24. and in san jose, it's $3.17. oil giant bp confirmed it will begin drilling off the coast of libya in the next few weeks. the deep water drilling will

take place in the gulf of serta, amid major concerns over bp's environmental and safety record after the gulf of mexico oil spill. the deal also follows reports that bp lobbied for the release of the lockerbie bomber -- the company has denied that claim. and a big shakeup today for bp. the oil giant's chief executive tony hayward is on his way out. hayward has been under fire for his handling of the gulf of mexico oil spill and now appears he's being replaced. meanwhile, families in louisiana are breathing sighs of relief after tropical storm bonnie whimmerred out. craig boswell has the story. >> reporter: a change in leadership, fox confirms tony hayward, bp's ceo is being replaced, stepping down on monday. hayward has been under fire for his handling of the gulf oil spill, also criticized for saying he wanted his life back and for going to a yacht race

in england while oil washed up on gulf shores. >> i wish he would have stepped down a long time ago and had people in there that understand the gravity of this. >> reporter: some fishing has resumed in the gulf. the federal government has re- opened some waters, about 26,000 miles at gulf stream marina in grand isle, a small step in the right direction. >> hasn't been anything like it used to be, but it has been a very welcomed sight to see people fishing. >> reporter: off the coast, crews are getting back to work at the site of the blownout well, now that tropical storm bonnie has fallen apart. but the ships that had to evacuate the area as the storm approached means efforts to cap the well for good will be delayed about a week. despite rain saturday, a benefit concert helped raise money after grand isle can tell selled one of the oldest fishing tournaments in the country. crews tearing down the states show the show was a brief break from a bad situation. >> it took hundreds of workers to remove the equipment off grand isle in preparation for bonnie, even though the storm fizzled.

local business owners say she created more work for the future. >> bp's been getting it all up as it come in, but it slowed down, but the storm brewed up the bottom, so i guess it brought more in. wish they would finish it up and get out of here. there is an historic moment in the protestant church happening in san francisco right now, as the evangelical lutheran church in america is welcoming several openly gay pastors into its ranks. david clem means joins us now from san francisco with more. >> reporter: last year, the church voted to allow gay, by sexual and transgender folks to serve as clergy. the folks do not have to be celibate if they are in a committed relationship. this is a big step for the church. right now, seven of those pastors are being welcomed into the church at st. mark's cathedral behind me in a

special ceremony. a hearty welcome for those who came to celebrate the rite of reception today as the evangelical church of america officially says welcome to seven pastors. today's ceremony is the end result of decades of work to change church policy and allow non-celebrate openly lgbt pastors to serve. former reverend john frickman and john delanguage, both straight, were the first 20 years ago to fight church policy and allow these three openly gay pastors serve in their san francisco churches. they called today a vined indication. >> it always felt very good about what we did and i knew that one day, i hoped i would live long enough to see it and i have, that the church would come around. >> reporter: of the seven pastors being welcomed today, six are being received in the church for the first time, but one, reverend ross merkel of

oakland, had been expelled, now being reinstated. he says he recognizes that just because there's a policy change, it doesn't mean lutheran churches will easily accept gay clergy. >> the change now to a point is that glbt clergy will be more open, the avenues of having a call will be received. but i mean, none of us are naive enough to think every church is going to want a glbt clergy. >> today is a really historic moment in this whole story. it's in some ways for many people, it's led up to this moment and yet it's a new beginning, because now the church has changed. now the evangelical lutheran church in america is a place where openly gay and lesbian people can serve and be transparent about their families, have their families and children honored in ways that other pastors are. >> reporter: organizers tell us this is the first of several services that will be held around the country to welcome new clergy into the lutheran church. and just a few weeks ago,

another large protestant denomination, the presbyterian denomination, also voted to allow openly gay non-celibate clergy to be or daneed. the irs has filed a $111,000 tax lien against the california lieutenant governor, the ninth time he's been taxed with a tax lien since 1992. the latest lien involves medicare, social security, and federal employee withholding taxes. it says he owes it on his 6000- acre ranch near santa barbara. a spokesperson says it actually centers on a dispute over whether vehicles at the ranch are for business or personal use. the lieutenant govern is running in november against san francisco mayor gavin newsom for the lieutenant governor's job. -- even though she no longer has the job. the state reportedly is paying for a total of four law

as we mentioned earlier, another bay area child has been attacked by a pitbull. oakland police say it happened yesterday at a home on 82nd avenue where a pitbull bit a 7- year-old girl in the face, severely injuring her. >> reporter: this is a pitbull- type dog at the oakland animal shelter with a nasty temperament. >> its entire body is rigid. he's also challenging the cameraman. >> reporter: animal control would not confirm or deny this is the dog that attacked a 7- year-old girl in east oakland yesterday. that child required surgery on her face, but director meghan webb says the animal's days are numbered. >> he is absolutely not a comfortable dog. this dog will bite someone. >> so what are you going to do with him? >> this dog will be euthanized.

>> reporter: yet webb is the first to say aggressive behavior is not the fault of a dog. she showed us this pit-type animal that is clearly scared by the camera. >> you can see him wiggling, a very soft dog, very friendly. >> reporter: webb says it's the owners who turn their dogs into dangerous animals, saying odd requests from prospective pet owners are-- >> they will go up to the kennel and scare the dogs and see if they will try to attack them. >> reporter: that doesn't even acknowledge the horror i had ways of raising dogs that can turn them into weapons. at the dog park, they would not blame pitbulls, but admit the dogs concern them. >> a little fearful, especially with our little guys. so, yeah, definitely fear there. you don't know what the owner is doing, how they are treating them, how they are training them. >> reporter: the life of the 2- year-old concord boy killed by

pitbulls tuesday was on the minds of people here. >> when you take a dog on like that, a breed like that, better know what you're doing. otherwise you're endangering the public. >> reporter: back at oakland, we met a huge mastiff with puppies resembling pitbulls, very friendly animals, but about the same size of the two dogs that mauled lacrosse coach in 2001. today i talked by phone with her former partner about thursday's fatal attack. she told me she couldn't think of anything more sad and believing that pitbull ownership requires different responsibilities, she said having five of them together, as was the case in concord, is insane. in richmond, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2news. the white house tonight is condemning a massive leak of documents about the war in afghanistan as a dangerous security breach. the 90,000 documents cover six years of operations under the bush administration. the military records reportedly include descriptions of

civilian killings and covert operations against the taliban. in afghanistan today, afghan officials said the taliban has offered to exchange the body of a u.s. sailor for insurgent prisoners. u.s. and nato officials confirmed two american navy personnel went missing friday in the eastern province of logar after an armored suv was seen driving into a taliban- held area. reporter connor powell is in kandahar with the latest on the effort to find the sailors. >> reporter: u.s. military has launched a full scale search and rescue operation to find these two missing u.s. service members. they are searching the area where they were last seen by air, with helicopters and planes and on the ground. they have set up military check points, checking vehicles as they come and go in and out of the area. now, according to u.s. military officials, the two members that are of the military that are missing are members of the united states navy. the sailors were last seen leaving a base in kabul sometime friday afternoon in an armored vehicle. now, it's not clear whether or not they were on an official

mission or if they just happened to leave the base for some other reason. the military is not saying why they actually did leave. now, afghan government officials in logar province just south of kabul say there was a brief fire fight between this vehicle and the taliban and that the taliban ultimately captured these two individuals. the u.s. military has yet to officially confirm that, but the military has been searching that area where that armored vehicle was last seen. now, the military says they are wasting no effort and time trying to find these two individuals and are trying to do everything they can to bring them home. in kandahar, afghanistan, connor powell, fox news. a bombing in baghdad today killed an off-duty policeman. iraqi police say militants placed a so-called sticky bomb on a car and used a remote control to detonate it. at least three other people were injured. bombings occur almost daily in iraq, along with frequent drive-by shootings and kidnappings. u.s. forces are scheduled to formally end combat operations there at the end of august.

iraqi intelligence gathering largely depends on information supplied by the u.s. in other news of the world tonight, in the sea of japan, the u.s. and south korea began joint military exercises today, despite threats from north korea of nuclear consequences. f-18 fighter planes are practicing take-offs from the uss george washington aircraft carrier off the korean peninsula. the large scale maneuvers involve about 20 ships, 200 aircraft, and 8000 military personnel. the drills are set to run for four days. north korea has called the exercises reckless and hostile, but u.s. military officials say so far, they haven't seen any response from north korea. an election night bombing in thailand killed one man and injured several others, as they waited at a bus stop. polls had just closed in a national election that pitted an incumbent against a jailed leader of recent mass protests. bangkok police refused to speculate if the bombing was

linked to political unrest. meantime, unofficial results indicate the government candidate has won by a narrow margin. chinese rescue workers have received a at least three people from deadly landslides in a northern province. state television this weekend showed workers searching through rubble and mud for survivors. landslide killed 14 people and more than 30 others are missing. it's been china's worst year for floods since 1998. typhoon season is only beginning, with six to eight typhoons expected this year. mexican authorities found a series of mass graves, with more than 50 victims believed to have been killed in the ongoing drug wars. the mass graves are in an area not far from texas. it appears many of the dead were tortured. officials said the victims, 48 men, and 3 women, have been dead for about two weeks. similar mass graves have been found in other mexican states. the area has suffered a spike in drug violence this year, as a rivalry between former cartel

cool, overcast weather this morning was likely welcomed by the more than 24,000 runners in the san francisco marathon. the wave of runners rolling across the golden gate bridge happened earlier today. two southbound lanes and one northbound lane of the bridge were kept open to traffic. the 26.2-mile race started and finished on the embarcadero south of mission street near the ferry building. keith becktell won the men's division. the women's winner was chakara, finishing with a time of 2:42:12. the city of livermore has been declared a leader in solar power. the northern california solar energy association has recognized livermore with numerous awards for encouraging solar development. livermore generated the greatest number of total solar watts of any bay area city last year and was second in the total number of solar energy systems. the city encourages solar installation with its green building ordinance and the

solar city's program it promotes jointly with dublin and pleasantton. a new study indicates contact lenses are the leading cause of injuries among children when it comes to complications from all medical devices. the fda compiled the detailed list of injuries related to medical devices. more than 70,000 children, including teenagers, go to the emergency rooms each year for such injuries and complications. about one fourth of the problems from contact lenses are infections and eye abrasions. other common problems include puncture wounds from hypodermic needles and infections from ear tubes. now, midterm elections are exactly 100 days away. and it's shaping up to be a battle for control of the house. reporter mel nanny wilkes handicapped the race from washington. >> the gop would need to pick up 39 more seats, but democrats clearly face an -- others may find they have to defend themselves for supporting his policies. >> especially those democrats who now have to justify the

votes, that they cast, whether or not the legislation advanced, they still cast a vote for cap and trade in the house, still cast a vote for healthcare, for the stimulus bill. so, yes, they have a record now that they also have to defend. >> as reagan didn't go to states where he was weak, obama's not going to go to states where he's weak, but it's not like reagan will not be a nonfactor, obama will not be a nonfactor. they have to pick and choose cities or states where he's obviously quite a big draw. >> democrats have a better draw of hanging on to a majority in the senate. 37 senate contest this is year with 19 democrats and 18 republicans defending their seats. different analysts putting the number of toss-up races between 9 and 12. among governs, there are currently 26 democrats, 23 republicans, and 1 independent. 37 states elect governors this fall. between 11 and 18 races are viewed as toss-ups. political analysts from both sides agree it is now

republicans who seem to want change and may be more motivated to show up at the policies. mel nanny wilkes, fox news. the -- for the wealthy heated up this weekend in washington, dc. democrats and republicans hit the sunday morning tv show circuit to push their message. julie kurts has the story from washington. >> reporter: treasury secretary gite inner hit the sunday talk shows with a clear message, tax breaks for the wealthy passed under president bush should be allowed to expire at the end of this year on schedule because of the need to reduce the deficit. >> also seems responsible to let the tax cuts expire, just go to 2 to 3% of americans, highest earning americans, that the country can withstand that. >> reporter: even some democrats in washington now say this is not a good time to raise taxes, not with the economic recovery still rocky and republicans argue the tax cuts on top earners should remain because they help small

business owners create jobs. >> i would simply say no tax increase next year. keep current law as it is and extend no -- have no tax increase next year. >> reporter: president obama and democratic lawmakers want to extend only those tax cuts that benefit families making less than $250,000 a year, a position secretary gite inner defends as prudent. the battle over tax cuts will kick into high gear in september. that's when the senate finance committee aims to draft legislation to deal with the current bush tax breaks. in washington, julie kurts, fox news. the reaction to the firing of the department of agriculture officials shirley sherrod also dominated sunday talk shows. on fox news sunday, the reverend jesse jackson said the white house did not want to appear racist. >> if you're about to be hit by an avalanche of news media criticism and you feel you have no moral foundation, the tendency to buckle. the reality is that the shirley

flooding in eastern iowa has caused millions of dollars

of damage to hundreds of homes and businesses. the flooding began yesterday, when the lake dell high dam failed, as rising flood waters created a 30-foot hole. small communities downstream from the dam were evacuated as water began surrounding the area. at least 200 homes and other buildings had been destroyed or damaged. iowa's governor issued a disaster declaration for two counties and toured the flood damaged areas. wild weather ripped through western new york yesterday. the national weather service is investigating reports of tornadoes touching down there last night. at least one tornado was confirmed in the village of maryville. local media is reporting no one was injured, but the storm damaged homes, crushed cars, and toppled trees. emergency officials say the storm left almost 13,000 homes without power. weather around the bay area, much more tame, very benign. but depending on where you're going, driving around, you could run into some sunshine or some fog and then sunshine again. let's check in with mark and see what's happening. >> that's right.

good to have a big assortment with the wardrobe, because temperatures are changing quite a bit, as you would expect this time of year from the coast to the inland spots. just outside the bay area, we do have active weather to talk about right around the sierra. in fact, right now toward lake tahoe, you see the thunderstorms lining up, developing over the past few hours. here we go, right around southlake take show, approaching carson city. the concern with this will be lightning strikes that could trigger wildfires. watch that today, tonight, possibly into tomorrow as well. this activity, in fact, is fairly close to the bay area a few days ago, showing up on the extended forecast charts. it was a bit of a concern for us as well. as you can see, we just have the low clouds and fog banked up across the bay area shoreline. here's a closer look with the clouds hugging areas closer to point rays, right around the golden gate bridge, pacifica, san francisco, as we do come in tighter here and the clouds will continue to be on the increase. one last frame i do want to show you, right around fairfield. it's been a constant over the past week. wind speeds sustained out of

the west-southwest, right around 23 miles an hour. so that's the cooling wind direction. in fact, the last gust reported up to a 33 miles an hour. and look outside right now. couple cameras we picked out for you, san francisco currently in the upper 50s. the cloud deck will be on the increase in the short-term. 59 degrees, san jose, lower 70s, mostly sunny skies. temperatures today, about 3 to 6 degrees cooler than yesterday's reading, so no 90s. warmest locations in the upper 80s out antioch. san francisco, 74 degrees. it was cooler for today. fog will be on the increase overnight. once again, the clouds pulling back to near the shoreline. the extended forecast, even have cooler temperatures showing up later in the week. here's the overall weather pattern once again. the fog hugging a good portion of the california coastline. once again, this cool weather system up to our north, also circulation just to our west as well, area of low pressure. it's basically going to reinforce the cooling heading into your monday, with clouds and drizzle. might be using the windshield

n]♪ good evening, everyone. welcome to this early sunday night sports wrap. giants are playing their best baseball of the season and it's translating on the road as well as at home. san francisco completing a 6-1 road trip with the 4-game sweep of the arizona diamondbacks. give a lot of credit in this one, once again, to buster posey. in the 1st inning with aubrey huff at first, posey hit a solid line drive to left. para couldn't flag it down. huff able to come around to score, a 4-hit day for posey, driving in the first run to

make it 1-0. after the diamondbacks had taken a 2-1 lead, giants evened it up in the fifth off enright. huff up the middle to score. tim lintecum pitched 8 effective innings, but had to work out of a jam in the eighth. montero lines into a double play, justin upton out, ending the inning. runners at first and third with nobody out. same thing in the ninth. romo with the strikeout that time. then in the tenth, giants made romo a winner with 2 outs. shot through the right side of the infield, pinch runner. whiteside comes to the plate with the winning run with the 3- 2, 10-inning win, giants complete their first four-game sweep in arizona in nine years. during the game, the diamondbacks made it official. -- pitcher dan herron, the object of plenty of trade talks, was dealt to the angels for three pitchers and a player to be named. herron, a three-time all-star

grand slam, as the twins win 10- 4. they trailed the white sox in the central by just a game. well, baseball's hall of fame class of 2010 was inducted today in cooper'stown, new york. umpire doug harvey on the right, next to him, andre dawson and on the far left manager whitey herzog. dawson is the former rookie of the year, mvp, one of just three major leaguers with 400 homeruns, and 300 stolen bases this. year's in ducties would not be that big a deal in the bay area, except for the fact that john miller received the ford award presented for major contributions to baseball broadcasting. miller joins other giant broadcasters, russ hodges, lon simmons and lindsey nelson in cooper'stown. miller and simmons worked in the booth together for a stretch. >> lon called me when i got this award and he said to me, congratulations. by the way, can you get me a phone number and name up there in cooper'stown, i have a lot of people outraged about this who want to see if they can get it overturned.

former open wheel driver juan pablo montoya has come close to winning a nascar race, but again today came up short at indianapolis. it's always a big deal when nascar comes to indy for the brickyard 400. montoya, former indy 500 winner, led for more than half of the race. but on this crash with 15 laps to go, finished for the day. montoya had given up the lead when he came to the pits during a caution and took four tires, while the other leaders took two. then with 10 laps to go, montoya's earnhardt teammate mcmurray passed harvick, holding on for the win. impressive win for mcmurray, becoming the third driver in history to win the daytona 500 and the brickyard in the same year, making it a triple for team owner, who also won this year's indy 500. on the indy car circuit today, they ran at the airport

in edmonton, alberta. just three laps to go, cast neff vees in the lead. will power tries to move in front, held off. officials called cast neff vees for blocking and black flacked him. he refused to come in and went on to finish first, but dickson was declared the winner. cast neff vees was insensed. after declaring dickson the winner, the firls are now putting things on hold. they are talking it over and will have an official ruling, which has not yet come. for now, dickson is declared the winner. cast neff vees crossed the finishline first and he is still hoping. well, he has two green jackets to show for his days on the pga tour, but bern heart longer had never won a major as a senior. langer took the lead into the final round of the senior british open. he wasn't on fire today, but had the shots when he needed
