we're live in -- [indiscernible] >> reporter: on a hot dry day with was gusting to 25 miles per hour, it was a big reminder that peak fire season is almost upon us. >> several vehicles burned up there and just an old abandon's horse trailer. >> this resident looks at what might have been and feels lucky. he was tilling his yard when he heard shouting and saw flames coming. he jumped on his backhoe to build his neighbor a break. the fire burned to a door of a third neighbor, hot enough to melt a individual door. >> you can see it burn right up against their house and burn several of their buildings. they're very lucky they didn't lose their house. >> we could have a fast moving fire with a small wind. >> fire officials didn't waste

doing, they warrant supposed to be. >> barrel fires are illegal. that's a question for investigators. a veteran firefighter was overcome by heat and smoke, but he's home and okay now. all of this comes on a particularly rough day for dixon fire. the small department responded to a fatale car crash yesterday and found one of their own, a popular young firefighter the victim. his dad is a career firefighter here, so everyone was working today with heavy hearts. >> in san jose, the firefighters gained the upper hand on a grass fire. the two alarm fire was reported shortly after 2:30 not far from a wal-mart store. they had the fire knocked down two hours later.

pipe bomb. >> it was found 200 yards from the initial side. this is a photograph that captured the detonation of that third device. police sought advise of 25 extra officers around the area who searched the park late last night for any additional devices. none were found. >> it's safe. bring your family, and what we want everybody to know is remain concerned. >> last night a backpack was discovered in a homeless camp. it turned out to not be a threat. >> a parent discovered that backpack. we determined it was the same backpack, again, not a threat, but they're doing what we told them to do. leave the packages alone and call us. >> the officials took care of the problems. right now we are easied up. >> concord police say they will continue to step up patrols of the park through the weekend.

driver seat of a ford fusion at about 1:15 when police say he was shot several times. he was taken to the hospital where he died. they are still working on a suspect description. also in the city tonight, the search continues for a suspect wanted for an armed carjacking and for shooting at police. investigators say around 5:30 officers spotted a car matching the description of the vehicle that had been car jacketed. the car crashed and then the suspects got out and ran and fired at the officers. the officers fired back. one suspect remains at large. >> highway patrol carried out surprise inspections in the parking lot of great america in santa clara.

all buses failed today. officers say they did not pass for a few reasons. either they had maintenance problems or the drivers did not have the proper licenses to operate the vehicle or even health endorsements allowing them to drive. >> for the most part, most companies do an out standing job at maintaining their vehicles, as well as ensuring that their drivers are properly licensed. as for the other, they compromise their passengers and the motoring public. >> hundreds of bicycle riders took to the streets of oakland tonight to honor slain bart passenger -- the ride was called peace from police as a way to call attention to what the participants is police abuse against community members. they road from lakeside park on

watching a dream. the crash of a $35 million fighter jet at a canadian air show. the pilot was attempting a maneuver when something went terribly wrong. he ejected moments before that plane smashed into the ground. the pilot survived with only minor injuries. natalie allen has reactions from those who saw it happen. >> all eyes were on the sky and of all the maneuvers, witnesses can't stop talking about the most spectacular finish. the pilot was on a run when spectators saw something unusual. i looked around -- >> he lost speed and it started going down. >> all of a sudden you could

runners taking part in tomorrow's san francisco marathon. it was all available at tonight's pa that feed at one market plaza. runners are encouraged to raise money in the fight against cancer. >> this is an issue that's close to my heart. my uncle passed away a couple of years ago. my grandmother had lymph oma. 20,000 runners are expected to compete this year in the five events ranging from a full marathon to a progressive marathon. there's also a kids run.

the hot spot, 49 degrees in antioch. looking out at the sunset, you can see overall the fog thing developing out there. the distance, the cool temperatures coast side. fog increase over night and clearing back to shoreline. the extended forecast does call for a cooling trend. there's a little low pressure to our west and high pressure to the east. also setting up a circulation both right around these systems and we're tracking more moisture moving into the state and thunderstorms firing up across the sierra: there's a possible for tomorrow once again across these areas we could be tracking some thunderstorms just outside of the bay area. there's some possibility with that with increased fire danger. we'll be watching that for
