>> reporter: in oakland where we're learning newing about about the suspect involved in a wild freeway shooting as well as the chp officers who first arrived on scene. >> reporter: i'm paul chambers live in oakland where police are investigating two separate incidents -- one ended up in a homicide. the other had police as a target. >> reporter: good afternoon. i'm jade hernandez. some firefighters just secured this fire station, fire station number 26. it officially closed today and it's not the only one. that story -- straight ahead.

good afternoon. topping our news this noontime we're learning more information about a man involved in a wild shootout with police on an oakland freeway. it all began with the traffic stop early yesterday on westbound i-580 near the grand avenue exit. the fbi plans to question the suspect who is currently in the hospital. ktvu's tara tara moriarty has our report. >> reporter: intense gunfire erupted after two chp officers pulled over someone on a suspected dui in oakland. >> this is every officer's worst nightmare, to be in a situation where you are faced with someone with a high- powered rifle. if you can just imagine a scene out of a movie where there's shell casings, everywhere, multiple shots are being exchanged. >> reporter: according to the highway patrol, the two officers were rookies, only six months on the job. one officer noticed a cache of weapons inside the driver's pickup. that's when byron williams of

groveland shot at officers. he was wearing a bulletproof vest. the second officer radioed for backup. >> one thing i must say, they were very cool, very calm. under control. it was truly amazing to see how they were considering the minimal amount of time they have on the job. >> reporter: just to give you an idea of the scope of the investigation, chp officers blocked off a mile stretch of interstate 580 beginning on that overpass all the way past this one. wethey wanted to make sure -- they wanted to make sure they collected all of the evidence. the fbi is planning to interrogate williams who is in serious condition in the hospital. they want to talk to him about a binder in his truck. >> in a very real sense he may have been killed, that he was gonna inflict serious body injury and/or death.

but fortunately our officers intercepted him. >> reporter: ktvu spoke with his mother yesterday. she said her son was angry with the government because he had a hard time finding work after being released from prison three years ago. something snapped, she said. it's over. he will go back to prison after this. our lives is over. williams already has two strikes. if convicted of a third, he could be sentenced to life in prison. meantime, the officers are on paid administrative leave while the investigation ntinues. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are investigating two other incidents -- one involved a homicide. in the other incident a gunman took shots at police officers at 8th and adelaide street last

night. palmpaul chambers has more. >> reporter: oakland police are investigating two incidents. one was a homicide. the other, police officers the target after a traffic stop. that all happened around 1:30 last night -- 11:30 of the last night when police were in the middle of making a traffic stop. police found crack cocaine in the car. while officers were in the process of making an arrest, someone fired shots at police from a nearby apartment building. officers later locked down and searched the building but they did not find any weapons or suspects. >> it appeared to be rifle roundsor shots. they backed down and called for additional resources. >> reporter: now, a lot of those additional officers were busy investigating a homicide in downtown oakland. around that same time, according to published word, - year-old jing hong was shot and killed near the corner of 19th

and western. he had just left the dentist's office where he had his teeth cleaned in preparation for a job interview. police say that's when two people approached him and the dentist, demanded money and shot and killed him. the dentist was unharmed and now there is a $20,000 reward being offered in that case. now, this morning, there were officers in the area who were working this case. there were several buildings nearby with surveillance cameras which may help officers with leads. but at this time, police are in need of help from the public in both cases. if you know anything about the shooting the a at 8th anded a delied or the shooting at the dentist's office, call police. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> , thank you, paul. some businesses will close early today along account with the courthouse because of a rally for johannes mehserle. counterprotesters are expected

to show out to show support for grant, the man johannes mehserle was convicted of killing. in addition to counterprotesters, it makes it unpredictae for everyone involved. >> there's been a lot of police activity around here. we're gonna close at 1:00 or 2:00, so is buttercup next door. just in case. >> more than 130 people have indicated they will attend the event, which was organized on facebook. organizers say the rally is meant to be peaceful and walnut creek was chosen for its central location. you will find continuing coverage of the events related to the johannes mehserle trial. go to ktvu.com. click on the tab near the top of the page. there are big changes for the vallejo fire department. some fire stations are closing. another is reopening. while engines and staff are being shifted around. so how does this all impact public safety? ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now with details.

>> reporter: good afternoon. firefighters jussecured this fire station, fire station number 26 here in vallejo. it officially closed today. it's not the only fire station and that worries neighbors in several neighborhoods. as the "closed" sign came down at fire station number 22 so the department could shift resources and reopen after four years, the very same sign appeared at a fire station forced to do the opposite -- close. >> i guess we'll have to do wi what we have and make due and do the best we can with the resources we have left. >> reporter: in the southern part of the city, glen cove station number 26 shut down today. in north vallejo we watched fire trucks leave the station securing station number 25 for the last time. these closures also force the number of firefighters to indle. >> we went from 28 down to down

it does. it takes its toll on the firefighters. it takes its toll on the people we're working for. >> reporter: northern vallejo residentface uncertainty. last saturday, they were the only responders neighbors could get ahold of after a deadly hit- and-run accident two blocks away from the very same station closed today. >> the neighbors called the accident and they called 911. unfortunately, the line was busy. three of the youngsters that live there ran down to the fire station to get help. >> i got a busy signal and a few other people that were here with their cell phones got a busy. >> so i ran that way with my blanket. >> reporter: renee johnson says she's not giving up, despite the fact if a two-alarm fire were to break up in vallejo right now, they would immediately have to call for mutual aid. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news.

>> thank you, jade. a new report by the san jose mercury news show many steals in san jose have -- schools in san jose have either outdated fire alarm systems or are not working. they found less than half of the district send signals off campus. some lack sprinkler systems and only a few have smoke detectors in all classrooms. san francisco supervisors are debating a proposal for tough, new regulations on nightclubs that trigger violence. this follows an incident at jelly's nightclub. under the rule, the commission would have the power to revoke a power's permit due to public safety issues. san francisco's mayor gave some minutes during the -- some comments during the last hour.

>> we continue to investigate. we're having the lowest crime rate in history. things are going very well. >> e hearing began a few hours ago. right now, the commission can only suspend permits for incidents involving public safety. officials from a police department were just talking to the media about crackdowns on crimes against children. and we'll tell you what is different now for carpoolers at the bay bridge. the weather may cool down after a hot ekend. mark tamayo has details on the forecast. time to stop holding those laid off in this recession hostage to politics. >> president obama is urging to focus on helping people struggling during the recession.

social welfare agencies and the highway patrol are trying to get more than 100 homeless people out of the transbay terminal. demolition about gee gin august 7th for a seven-year project to build a new train and bus terminal in downtown san francisco. the building at 1st and mission has become a place to sleep for about 140 homeless people every night. important changes took

effect today for carpoolers at the golden gate bridge. cash is no longer accepted for the carpool fee. instead drivers have to use fastrack to pay the $3 toll. carpoolers also have to stop so a collector can verify the vehicle has the required number of occupants. if carpool drivers use the regular lanes, they will be chargethe full $5 fastrack toll. > late this morning, san jose police announced 11 people have been arrested in a bay area- wide investigation into child pornography being distributed on the internet. investigators displayed photographs of the suspects. police officers and sheriff deputies from santa clara county, the peninsula and the east bay all took rt in the investigation. >> the very, very clear message is if you choose to abuse our children by exploiting them to the internet and sharing photographs of them that are demeaning, vicious and violent we will come after you and we will put you in prison.

>> investigators ask that pan and children take a close look at the pictures of the suspect to help determine if there are any other victims whose photos might have been distributed on the internet. president obama is lashing out at republicans today in an effort to get support for a bill to extend jobless benefits for miamis of americans. during a rose gardespeech, he urged the senate to pass an unemployment insurance extension when it takes up the issue tomorrow. repuicans are saying they will only approve the plan if it does not add to the deficit. >> the same people who didn't have any problems spending hundreds of billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest americans are now saying we shouldn't offer relief to middle-class americans like jim, leslie, people who really need help. >> republicans sa unused t.a.r.p.

money should be tapped. the ds are expected to have the -- the democrats are expected to have enough votes needed. the georgia institute of technology has developed the patch that can be placed on skin to inoculate people with the flu. the patch contains hureds of microneedles, like the ones you see here, that deliver the flu vaccine into the skin. the patch could be sent through the mail so people can get the vaccine, give it to themselves without going to a doctor. about 25,000 workers raised more than -- walkers raised more than $3 million at the 24th annual a.i.d.s. walk in san francisco. as those walkers were crossing the finish-line, a new study presented by by a university in vienna says infections have been cut in half. >> every time there is a study

by this, we know more and more about the science that can help with h.i.v. infections and care for those people who have the infection. >> the money raised benefits a.i.d.s. organizations in the bay area. the event has raised $76 million since if began. yosemite park is making more campsites available for the summer. the park has opened up all of its sites including the yosemite creek campground that's been closed for the last 14 years due to flood damage. campgrounds that closed down over the winter are now accessible. even with the extra space, sites are available on a first come-first serve basis and people should arrive early to get a good spot. time to check in with mark tamayo. >> the fog is constant. if you are heading to the coast, temperatures will be

chilly. inland, pretty hot temperatures. right now on live stormtracker2, there's the fog bank offshore. in fact, it's been expanding over the past six to 12 hours and the clouds around pacifica and san francisco. the clouds are close to downtown and near the golden gate bridge. look outside. we can show you this and over san francisco, there we go with the overcast. only in the upper 50s right now. 58 degrees. eventually on track to reach the mid-60s. at's in san francisco, with still some partial clearing. the plan for today, mostly sunny skies, still some coastal fog and a cooling trend that will begin. the warmest locations could be around 95 to 96 degrees. winds could be around 15 to 25 miles an hour especially around the delta later on today. current numbers are, once again, 5 in san francisco. santa rosa, in the upper 70s. livermore at last check reporting 80 degrees. already warming up across the interior. high pressure really heating up

a good portion of the west over the past few days. it will begin to weaken. as it does, temperatureswill cool off a few degrees. yesterday we had the readings in the upper 90s to right around 100. today the hottest location is 95 to 96 and the cooling trend kicks in as we head into tuesday with the warmest locations in the mid- to upper 80s. even into wednesday we're gonna increase the fog, marine lar and onshore breeze. with that temperatures will continue to cool off as we head into midweek. forecast highs this afternoon, santa rosa will check in at 85. fairfield, a bit breezy and antioch tops out in the mid- 90s. san francisco, 65. oakland, 69. still some lower 90s for livermore and san jose, 93. here is a look ahead at your five-day forecast -- you will notice the overall trend we've been talking about it. we could even have drizzle --

drizzle first thing in the morning. wednesday probably one of the coolest days of the week. and then we have a minor cooling. the inland has really heated up. anher day of pretty hot temperatures but there's the -- the fog is never too far away. it will eventually come back. >> yeah. this has been part of the continuing pattern we've seen. the couple of days of warmup and then it cools back down. it's kind of been like that, two or three days of the heat and then cooling back. it looks like we'll be back in the cycle again. >> thank you, mark. dozens of people got up extra early to be first in line for ckets at the san francisco symphony. they were gathered outside of davies symphony hall. this is the first day the tickets are on sale for the next season. one woman who drove from half

moon bay talked about why it's so important to her. >> my whole life is active and physical and kind of dirty because i'm out in the yard a lot. when i go to the symphony, i sit, absorb and notice someone else is doing everything. >> she said it's a ritual for her and her friend to buy the tickets. online and phone sales began two hours later at 10:00. someone who got bought a megamillions ticket in southern california is a big winner. last saturday's drawing was worth $68. just one ticket much matched all of the numbers. the ticket was sold by a smoke and stuff store in los angeles. san francisco is celebrating a new international sister-city relationship. it was announced last hour. new information about how much money could come to the bay area if san francisco hosts the america's cup.

earnings reports that companies will be releasing in the next couple of weeks. the dow is up 8. the nasdaq is up -- the dow is up 68. the nasdaq isup 16. here's the top movies at the box office -- if san francisco hosts the next america's cup race, it could pump 1.4 billion into the local economy. that's according to a city commissioned report out today on the economic impact of the sailing regatta. according to "the san francisco chronicle" the report said it would create almost 9,000 jobs. spain, italy, france, and portugal are also competing against san francisco to host

the race. a venue will be chosen by the end of the year. construction crews working on the fourth bore of the callly cut tunnel are unearthing a treasure trove of fossil. so far they've discovered more than 500. most fossil are ferns and fish. sometimes they are only the size of pebbles but there's one piece that could be an ancient replica of a camel. mayor newsom put his seal of approval on a new sister city relationship. he signed an agreement linking the city with barcelona, spain. an organization called sister city international pro mosts this -- promotes this. the goal, promoting global cooperation at a municipal level. much on ktvu news at 5:00, new numbers show solano county has the highest unemployment rate in the bay area. we'll look into why that county
