from the pro-palestinian protests all across the bay area. what we're learning now after police cleared out of occupy uc berkeley building and which university president just announced his retirement a day after being placed on leave. plus one east bay church needs more than prayers to help stay open in the aftermath of a devastating fire. >> station. he's calling for news 2. >> thank you so much for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 2. i'm justine waldman. verbeek going to begin with the sentencing day for the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi of san france in his san francisco home kron. 4 s charles clifford joins us now live from the federal courthouse in san francisco with details. and he is going to be spending a lot of time behind bars. charles? >> he is. you know, david de pap was convicted in federal court late last year of assaulting and kidnapping paul

pelosi, the husband of nancy pelosi. and today we learned that his sentence will be 30 years in federal prison. david de pap appeared in court in an orange jumpsuit. he showed very little emotion during the proceedings. the judge in this case sentenced him to 30 years for assault and 20 years for kidnapping. those sentences will run concurrently, meaning that he will receive a maximum of 30 years in federal prison minus the 18 months that he's already been in custody. now, the judge did allow several victim statements to be read into the record, including a statement from nancy pelosi who said that her husband is still struggling with his injuries and that she was in favor of the maximum sentence in this case. following the proceedings, the fbi made a statement to the media saying that they believe that justice has been served. today's sentencing of david, the 2 significant prison term sends a clear message. the violence and intimidation have no place in our community. i was hoping he would last time. but, you

know, >> really do about it. one of david, the past 2 sons also spoke saying that he is saddened by what has happened and you really tried his best to be a kind person. and the thing is because i know him personally. >> i know that there is no real heart and that person now the path is also facing 6 felony counts in state court, including for premeditated attempted murder, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment.jury selection in that trial begins next week here in san francisco. those proceedings >> are expected to last until late june. all right, back live now the judge in court today said that if david de pap is found guilty in state court that whatever sentence he received, their can run concurrently to his federal sentence. but for now in san francisco, charles clifford kron, 4 news. charles, thank you so much. will go to the east bay. now are a dozen people have been arrested, including a student after university of california

police. >> the officers there broke up a pro-palestinian demonstration at a vacant uc berkeley building. police say that last night, 12 people blocked the entrance to the and ahead, building the plywood and shields and then they violently resisted arrest using crowbars and they were hitting the officers. no one got hurt. the protesters are now facing charges of vandalism, trespassing and destruction of property. one day earlier, police had called the takeover of that building a crime scene, a recent graduate of uc berkeley says he's all for protests. but was not fully on board with this occupation. >> i mixed opinions about this, but i'm proposing, you know, i think they're doing a good, good work here. michael. the investments mission they have going on. >> ucpd is reviewing video to see if they can id those who attacked the officers. so there is a champ smoke. more charges could be coming.

sonoma state university president mike lee has decided to retire. this is coming after csu administrators placed him on leave for insubordination after he made a deal with the pro palestinian protesters without checking with his bosses, the chancellor of the csu system says president ali is agreement was made without the appropriate approvals and the agreement included the academic boycott of israel universities. some students in sonoma are supporting the former president's agreement and think that the punishment was unfair. >> support the president and on the agreements against genocide. kind of crazy. how a statement about lake. ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave. >> now pro-palestine student activists groups say that the agreement that was laid out 3 page letter was a win. others saw it as anti-semitic.

to keep republicans in control of u.s. house of representatives. >> california republicans responsible for bringing the house majority, the road to holding on to that house majority rally that house majority come straight from california. you know, we have picked up 5 house seats in the same time that democrats have lost 6 house seats right here california. they're going to come at us with everything that they've got. the problem is they don't have solutions. republicans are showing up. the convention will also address internal matters, including a vote on party bylaws. we did reach out to the california democratic party for comment. >> but so far have not heard back. california is facing a 55 billion dollar deficit. that's according to the non-partisan legislative analyst's office. this figure is double the 27 and a half billion dollars. governor newsom projected in his updated budget proposal one week ago. the legislative

analyst's office is responsible for making recommendations to the legislature on how to mitigate this deficit. lawmakers have until june 15th to pass a fully balanced budget. there is a big bay area tradition happening this weekend. runners are going to take their mark for bay to breakers on sunday. people can. >> ron job dance their way to the finish line a lot of them are going to be wearing some interesting outfits. anything at all. but runner peach shaw has been doing this since 1975 and he says he has no plans to slow down during his 50th race this year. >> more than ever. it's the people and it's it's a race course itself. it's so fantastic. going through golden gate park and getting down to the beach. it certainly has helped me. had foreigners. the surgeries, the last was in 2006 and a doing pretty well. 5 decades is nothing right

mid-fifties with mostly cloudy skies. so nice. cool temperatures and a light breeze. perfect weather for running out there. as for the rest of the weekend, you can see that marine layer is breaking apart here. this view from the mount tam. and that's really the weather story. we've seen the clouds over by the coast overnight in the morning and then we clear out and when we see mostly sunny sky know there's high pressure right off shore that is keeping the activity to our north and keeping us nice and mild. and of course, a foggy. so here is that future cast model. you can see the fog coming back here along the coastline towards the evening. and then it will eventually reach the valleys overnight. so it will be another cloudy morning and then things will start to mix out the app in the afternoon. so sunny skies inland for the rest of weekend. and you can see view there. i'm here. san francisco temperatures in the upper 50's as well as half moon bay. we're already in the mid 70's in san jose and we're in the 70's in livermore in concord.

should be bumping up to close to 80 degrees and those inland communities. so here is your seven-day forecast. take a look at your inland temperatures where we're mostly hold on to the upper 80's until tuesday. looks like temperatures bump up to the 80's there, upper 70's and then the low 80's and then around the bay. you see the low 70's for the next couple of days of the coast will be pretty seasonable in the upper 50's 60's. but, you know, mostly sunny skies. and then those cloudy conditions over by the coast and we should get breaks from the clouds in the morning. and daytime, back to you. gayle, thank you. san francisco shoppers now have a new place to get groceries and one of a kind snacks trader joe's opening up a new location today on fulton street that some haze valley. >> this is the 7th location in the city. and in a statement, the district supervisor, dean preston says we're thrilled to fill this long vacant space. but the grocery store after all these years, the area has been subject to encampments and vandalism over the years.

>> the world's top ranked golfer scottie sheffler arrested this morning before the second round of the pga championship in kentucky. and espn reporter captured this video of the arrest. so earlier outside of a cub, there was an unrelated fatal traffic accident. and the reporter says that scheffler tried to drive around the crash area that police had blocked off. and then police told him to stop. he didn't. and officer grabbed his car. he kept on driving for about 10 yards. he was then pulled out of the car and then handcuffed and and is now been booked multiple charges, including disobeying a police officer. scheffler was released and then returned to

the golf course to play his second round as planned at last check. he was currently in 3rd place in the tournament. and scheffler did issue a statement on social media after he was released. he called the incident a chaotic situation and wrote, quote, everything was just a misunderstanding. he says he also never intended to disobey the police scheffler also gave condolences for the person who died in the traffic accident. thousands of people waited outside of dodger stadium last night, all trying to get their hands on the shohei ohtani bobblehead. his first one is a member of the team. there's one in particular that's going for 1000 as of dollars already on the secondary market one of those 40,000 ohtani bobbleheads given out at dodger stadium. there was a highly limited bobblehead bobblehead that fans wanted. it featured him in the row on

dedicated couple committed to fighting hunger in vallejo. it's really the community driving this and and supporting it. that makes it happen. mary and dogs and her husband, benjamin co-founded faith, food friday's in 2011. >> the non-profit accepts donation drop-offs and offers volunteer opportunities. 7 days a week at its pantry on salon away. it hosts food, distributions 3 times a week giving out at least 10,000 pounds of food. on those days, we would never in our entire history. you run out of food after distribution. and we've done that consistent with for the last 4 months eggs says it has been a struggle lately. keeping the refrigerators school and even the lights turned because donations all around are down. despite the demand for services jumping at least 50% since the start of the pandemic, monetarily and food supplies. plus, we well, a lot of volunteers behind me, but we need more faith food,

friday's partners with the food bank of contra costa in-salon serving as a distributor. the organization also provides groceries to homeless vallejo city unified school district students to keep them fed. when schools closed school district academic support providers here logan pix, the food every week and the children look forward to it. and it's not just because they receive a bad, but i believe because it does down. >> and help them over the week. volunteer say their work is fulfilling safina way donates her time every friday. i think we're doing a good job, but we have a very nice grew far. >> women, especially women. and course, we do come in to india. >> with well, we get food you know, from individuals lemmons off their anything you know, if you're clearing out your pantry as long it's not expired. >> will take will get put to good use. and in all likelihood you will be helping out a neighbor.

>> in vallejo, philippe djegal kron, 4 news. >> california lawmakers have decided not to advance a bill to legalize psychedelic mushrooms. san francisco state senator scott wiener was behind the regulated psychedelic assisted therapy act would have allowed licensed professionals to give psychedelic mushrooms to patients over. 21 years old. the bill failed to advance out of it. senate committee this week earlier this year. governor gavin newsom vetoed a bill from wiener that would have legalized the possession of small quantities of hallucinogenic deaths from overdoses from drugs is dropping in the u.s. for the first time. now in 5 years, preliminary data from the cdc shows they're around 107,000 overdose deaths in 2023, which is about a 3% decrease from the year before. cdc officials saying that the final number may be different, but they believe that there will be a decline. prescription painkillers were once the

driving force of overdose deaths in the u.s. that it was heroin. and now it's fentanyl. the cdc is warning about a resurgence of m-pox here in the u.s. as a deadlier variant of the disease is gaining strength overseas. m-pox also known as monkeypox spread amongst a mostly and bisexual men during an outbreak in 2022. a vaccine for m-pox has been released. but the cdc says the majority of the people at risk have not received it. the government has enlisted lgbtq influencers to spread awareness ahead of pride events this spring and summer. the cdc is also concerned about a newer variant of m-pox currently spreading in the democratic republic of congo, which is saying that it's spreading amongst people who may have direct contact with infected animals. about 1000 people, mostly children have died from this version of m-pox, which is an estimated 25 times deadlier than the variant currently detected in the u.s.. deadly thunderstorms

hitting southeastern texas for the second time this month. now houston's mayor saying at least 4 people are dead. we have some video now from above showing us the aftermath. you can see here large trees, homes. they're just ripped apart. priscilla thompson joins us now with the latest. well, it was a scary night for residents across the southeast, texas as those severe thunderstorms rolled in. >> we're in downtown houston, parts of which look like a disaster zone today. take a look at this building. you can see the entire the site has just completely crumbled. this is just some of the damage that people are dealing with today. there are also hundreds of thousands of people across the state and particularly this houston area who are without power. and sadly, we know that 4 people did lose their lives as a result of the storms. today, there are more than 1500 crews who are out working to restore power and clean up debris. we know that

schools are closed across the city and in parts of louisiana and non-essential workers are being asked to stay home so that that working it can get done. but it comes as there's more bad weather on the way with this storm moving east impacting millions in places like louisiana, alabama and mississippi. parts of the gulf coast expected to get up to a foot of rain by saturday. priscilla thompson in houston, texas. all right. let's check in now with killed to see what's happening in that part of the country right now. >> yeah, justin, where in the heart of tornado season for the folks in the south here. so the threat of severe weather now, it's not going to be anything that we saw yesterday. so texas houston specifically will now be dealing with the heat as millions are still without power after that severe weather passed through. so back here at home, you can see we're quiet. it's all about the clouds over by the coast. and we're sunny inland statewide. you can really notice the difference in temperatures. we're in the 60's and upper 50's along the coast from san francisco to

san diego. and as you make your way inland, 87 degrees in bakersfield, pretty much the one of the warmest close to reading close in the 90 degree mark in here in the state of eighty-four in fresno and 80 and the sacramento. so back here in the bay area, i am seeing readings in the 70's as you make your way in lynn, lynn livermore, fremont 72 degrees over by the east bay shoreline, 60 degrees and berkeley and 65 in oakland. and as you make your way north, you could see 66 degrees in santa rosa. 61 degrees over at point reyes station. a quick check over here at diamond peak in lake tahoe. it's nice and sunny out there. you see blue lake out in the distance. so if you're heading out there this weekend, your forecast will be pretty warm, 70's and mid to upper 60's for the weekend and then we'll cool down to the 50's and back here in the bay area. we have cloudy skies along the coast, but we are sunny inland. so tonight, just look out for some coastal

drizzle overnight and the partly cloudy skies. temperatures will be pretty mild in the overnight. 49 degrees to 55 degrees. back to you. thank you, gayle. personal data of recology customers in san francisco may have been leaked because of a data breach and we were notified about this from one of our viewers. >> in the letter recology says this data breach happened last november. the company began an internal review and found that sensitive information, including customers names dates of birth, social security numbers and health insurance information was all leaked. according to the letter, recology does not believe that the leaked customer information is being used for fraud or identity theft, but they're offering some identity theft protection memberships. now. for the second year in a row, salmon fishing along. rivers has now been banned in california on wednesday. the state fish and game commission canceled recreational salmon fishing along the state's river systems. officials say the salmon population is struggling due to multiple factors including climate

change, rough drought years and harmful algae blooms. this is coming after months of federal officers banned commercial salmon fishing off of our coasts for the second time. a bill that would have scrutinized a new electric charge for californians will not move forward. the assembly appropriations committee killed this bill on thursday. the public utilities commission led by governor newsom appointees approved a new charge for $24.15 last week in return for paying that new fee, customers will get a lower rate for their power. california's electric rates are the second highest in the nation. this new fee did spark some outrage, which is why the bill was introduced. the committee did not explain why they killed it. people martinez may see flaring later on this month that the martinez refining company because it's up finishing up a major maintenance project, a project late last rc began

restarting equipment to make sure that it's processing units are in good shape. the company says flares are a central part of its system to safely manage excess combustible gases while burning them off efficiently and effectively. mrc hopes to minimize or prevent any flaring during this process. more than 70 million dollars has gone into upgrading the equipment. the transportation security administration says it's ready for the busiest summer travel season ever starting with the memorial day holiday, which is next weekend. so starting may 23rd 2 may 29th. the tsa expects to screen more than 18 million passengers at airport checkpoints nationwide next friday is forecast to be the busiest day of the long memorial day weekend with 3 million people expected to fly. >> there will be some days the summer that we will likely see 3 million travelers in our screening checkpoints across the country records. about 2.9 million. but we expect 3 or

>> well, this year's allergy season might be worse than years past for some people here in the bay area. a lot of people, but having some questions about this, we thought we would try to get some answers. doctor teen us in here with stanford medicine is here with us to talk about it. thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you so much for having me. so what's making people allergic right now is grass flowers, trees. what's? >> what's our biggest enemy at the moment? yes. so right now we have really high grass pollen all around as well as >> those oak trees or olive trees. their pollen is also very high. >> and if you are allergic to something like that, what are your symptoms? is it mostly just like runny nose?

coughing, sneezing. >> writes, majority of folks present with you need congestion. they may have a lot of post nasal drip so they can present with coughing for some folks. it may trigger asthma if they have underlying a lot of that, i'm pediatric allergist. so i see a lot of little kids coming in with their eyes are swollen. they're eating. they're playing out in the park or playing sports and is making them very miserable. and on top of that with the kind of underlying allergy symptoms, you just more at risk for sinus infections poor sleep and just overall fatigue. >> so you're talking about kids there. are you born with an allergy to something like this? and can you outgrow it? and then if you're an adult, can you develop it later on in life? >> yes, so seasonal allergies are a little different than that. see something like food, allergies, food, allergies. we see very early but when it comes to seasonal allergies, they really kind of.

>> you know, take off toddler one of the later. and it is one of those allergies that you can develop very much develop later in life. and then what we see. >> i have patients and family members who move from one area to another and they moved to the new area and the pollen our gender different there. and they're, you know, they're breeding great. the first couple years. >> but usually takes about 3 years before your body starts it become sensitized to the new allergy. as always wonder that people thought i'm not grew up. i wasn't alerted anything. and then they moved to a new area like here in the bay area. and then all of a sudden they find themselves being allergic to something. >> but because they didn't grow up with it like getting immune system getting used to it. >> so we see some of distance little different because we actually now have a birth cohort looking in into allergy. it's one of its a first of its kind. it's all have 13 centers within the country doing looking at out

children are developing allergies and we're seeing kind of the early hands and 2 years, 3 years of age where testing positive. >> you know, they start off with dust which is some, you know, all year round. we're also seeing some grass allergies as well. people are really needing some like relief right now wondering like over-the-counter medications year. >> you're recommending to your patients and also if there's things we can do like closing windows, washing, you know, washing our hair face before we go to bed. >> and then people also say you should try to eat local honey, i'm wondering what you think about that. >> yes, yes, still even in terms of allergies, i think prevention is sometimes the best treatment. so whatever you can do to kind of minimize your exposure, exposure when possible. i know it's not always possible. so like you said, keeping windows closed. i tell folks when they come home after a whole day outside shower quickly get it off of change clothes. >> and then local honey, that is a great question. once you

ready to that, luck, allergies. not sure how much that will help you in the media time. >> but local honey is something that will be good for microbiome. its nutrition sits you can't hurt you. and it might just help you down the many months from now. so it definitely should try, but i'm not sure how much relief that will give in the new year in the near term. good to know. last question here. just one. when patients come into your office, how can you tell if it is an allergy and not just a cold or maybe covid? oh, that's a great questions. so one of them, what greatest indicators is stable? the patient will tell us they'll say this is the season. this is the give no other symptoms that they're they don't have a fever. they don't have other symptoms like vomiting abdominal pains. and those are kind of the ones you can out another quick way. i can tell as you try any histamines, are you try your usual out mess that help you? and if it helps chances are its allergy that
